The Ramblings Of An Insomniac

Why are we here?

What am I doing with my life?

I should really clean my cupboard tomorrow

What outfit should I wear tomorrow?

I should stop binge watching stuff

What time is it?

If I fall asleep now I can still get enough sleep

What year was the Berlin Wall torn down?

Why are humans so annoying?

Why am I still not asleep?

What if I never succeed?

And what if I have to drop out of college?

What if I never become a psychologist?

And have to work as a receptionist forever

What am I doing with my life?

Why am I here?

What am I going to post tomorrow?

Maybe I should write a post about this…

I have a lot of trouble falling asleep and I usually think way too much instead of trying to fall asleep so I decided to write about it. I really have a hard time calming down and my brain just refuses to stop sometimes. This poem “The Ramblings Of An Insomniac” was inspired by my experiences with insomnia. Hope you enjoyed “The Ramblings Of An Insomniac.” Let me know in the comments if you did.

  1. Very relatable. This is me every night before sleep finally comes to me!

    1. Haha yeah I really envy people who can fall asleep quickly 🙂

      1. Same!
My sister takes like half a second to doze off while I contemplate life for an hour and only then can I think of falling asleep!

That’s basically the reason why I don’t like my sister :p

        1. My sister does that too and it drives me insane! Like how?!?

  2. My son and husband are snoring before their heads hit their pillows. Me? Sometimes hours and it never lasts long. I can do relate. I love this post. Thank you

    1. Thank you so much! I know a lot of people do have trouble sleeping and it sucks when other people have an easy time sleeping. My sister and mum sleep really fast and well but my dad and I are just constantly struggling with it. You should try drinking some tea before going to sleep, it helps me sleep better sometimes when I do that 🙂

  3. I seem to always stay up for hours, even when I tell myself I am going to bed “on time”, I will find something to do and it takes my attention away from sleep and there I go, awake all night. If I am watching a movie, I fall asleep at night normally, or if I get to a certain point where it is so late at night/early morning that there is nothing left to do, then I will force myself to go to bed at the very least lay down. I think my problem lies with the fact I leave my TV on at night because I am a not fan of total darkness and the other reasoning being I love being a night owl.

    1. I do the exact same thing. I always tell myself I am going to sleep early today but I always end up doing everything and anything other than sleeping till like at least midnight. I usually end up binge watching something till I finally decide to sleep. I really don’t like the dark either, actually I’ve always been scared of the dark (and watching a bunch of horror movies before sleeping does not help the situation) so I usually leave some light switched on. I also get a lot done at night for some reason so sometimes I just stay up and do random stuff I was supposed to have done in the morning 🙂

      1. Yes! omg! same with me! I get stuff done at night that should have been done during the daylight hours. Like weirdly enough, I have done laundry at night. LOL I will binge watch something too and it helps me to fall asleep. I refuse to take meds to sleep, which is why I don’t take them. I feel like I can still manage my life during the day even when I am not in bed until 4 oclock in the morning.

        1. Yeah sometimes I feel like night time is the best time for me to get stuff done because for some reason that’s when my brain decides to wake up (ironically enough). I don’t want to take sleeping pills either and I’ve tried some other stuff that’s supposed to help with sleep but most things don’t really work on me. Yeah I’m okay with sleeping late too as long as it doesn’t really interfere with my life

  4. I am the same. I would stay wide awake when practically the whole city is asleep. Eventually I stopped thinking about it as a bad thing. And just started enjoying the quiet. It’s the best. And I love it.

    1. Yeah I really love the peacefulness at night too! Plus I don’t think sleeping late is always a bad thing as long as you’re okay with it

  5. I can relate! When you get older, its just harder to sleep without overthinking everything. Here’s what I do to sleep at night:

    1. no afternoon naps, add a work out to your daily routine
    2. hot shower/bath before bed
    3. nyquil? smoke pot? lol
    4. meditate

    1. Hahaha thank you so much for the advice I’ll try them out! Maybe minus the smoking… 🙂

  6. I can relate with you on this. I have had problems sleeping since I was a kid. I am now 54, and still have the same problem.

    1. Yeah I’ve had trouble sleeping for a while too and I guess it’s because my brain is pretty active and I have always been an over thinker so I guess that makes it worse too.

      1. That is me to a T. I am the same way.

        1. I think most people with depression and anxiety seem to have the same problem when it comes to sleeping.

  7. One of my recent late night google searches was also “when Berlin wall torn down”
Just letting you know you’re not alone in your thoughts.

    1. Omg that’s so weird because I literally Googled that a few days ago!! I had been learning about it when I learnt about the Cold War last year and usually I’m good at remembering years but I had forgotten this one so I Googled to check!!
