Popular Blogging Tips Bloggers Should Not Follow

Although there is some amazing advice out there for bloggers here are some pieces of advice I’ve heard often that don’t really work- at least not for me. So I decided to share some blogging tips bloggers should not follow because they will lead you astray.

Tags

A lot of sites tell you to be very specific with your tags like instead of “food” tag it “lasagna” or “sandwich” but in my opinion this is a really bad idea for multiple reasons. First of all there are a huge number of people who would be interested in food or larger topics in general compared to the number of people interested in a specific thing. By being specific you are losing a lot of traffic. Furthermore, more people are likely to search a general topic on search engines like food rather then a specific one and so again you would be losing traffic.

Niche

A lot of people advice that you stick to one or a minimum amount of topics on your blog but in my opinion you can do a lot of topics and still get a good following/traffic. You just need to plan yourself out properly and make sure your blog isn’t just a mess of random posts. Using multiple topics can help bring a lot of people interested in different things on your blog rather than those who would follow it from just one topic.

Titles

Using a catchy and unique title is great sometimes but a lot of times there are titles that are more likely to get traffic like “how-to’s” and “top 10’s”. Sometimes sticking to these titles does help increase traffic especially from search engines.

Topics

Even though it is a good idea to do more popular topics sometimes it really works in your favour to do something unique because you never know people might love it. Although a lot of people say that you should write on popular topics especially if you are blogging to earn money I think trying something unique would be worth it sometimes and may actually increase the popularity of your blog.

Comments

Even though you should comment and interact on others blogs saying nothing and just leaving a link to your blog or a post on your blog is just annoying and less likely to bring you traffic or followers. Instead try to be genuine and show interest in their post and this will help bring traffic to your blog.

  9. Thanks for the suggestions! They are much appreciated. It seems that being a really good writer isn’t enough in the age of the internet. One also needs to know a load of “tricks” as well.

    1. Yeah there are so many writers out there which is great but it also makes it that much harder to get noticed so it does definitely help to know these tricks!

      1. I consider them as guidance instead of tricks.
And it’s alright to have a different view of writers.
        Thank you again!!

        1. You’re very welcome!

      1. I’m learning, and you are a great help.

  11. Thanks, Pooja. These awere the only five tips I followed! 😀

    1. Thank you!

  12. My blog is about children book reviews, art, crafts, songs, and fingerplays. Everything is centered around the book theme. I started my blog title with the name of the book I was reviewing. I changed it to a Theme instead. My target has been mothers, dads, and teachers. I think pinterest brings most people to my blog but I’m not sure.

    1. That’s very interesting. I don’t know much about Pinterest but I hear it’s very good for traffic.

    I agree with these tips.

    1. Glad to hear that!

  14. Awesome tips!!! Thanks 🙏

    1. Thank you!

  15. Absolutely! Another great way to create interest in your blog (as well give shout outs to others!) is to go to a site like http://www.quora.com and search for questions related to what you write about. You can share your opinions and expertise there (genuinely being helpful) and put the link to your blog in your signature. You don’t really need to go into detail about your own content, just be super helpful and offer your thoughts and advice to the person asking the question you address and, if they really appreciate it and find your response insightful, they’ll check you out themselves! Not my own tip, but one I picked up from various other bloggers. See how that works? 🙂

    1. Wow that’s such a great idea that you so much for sharing I will try it out for sure!

  16. Great advice – thanks.

    1. Thank you!

  17. Nice tips. I agree

    1. Thank you!

  18. Hiii! Amazing post and you are right, I’m new in the “blogging world”, and in some websites, I saw some recommendations and that is supposed that would help, but is almost the same. Thanks for sharing 😀

    1. Welcome to the blogging world and thank you!

  19. I’m new at this also.
    Thank you for the help!

    1. Thanks happy to help!

      1. I have a question, about traffic and blogging.
Does the internet contain so many program avenues that more reader’s are needed?
        Just a random question.
Thank you in advance…you are Great!

        1. What do you mean by program avenues exactly?

          1. 🌐 websites such as IG, F-book, and so on. They are all programs for socials. ☺

            1. Oh right, well I would suggest being on at least one social media because it really does help with traffic at least that’s what I’ve noticed for my blog.

              1. PoojaG, I flow energy so..4 programs is enough for me. One day it will be easier
And I appreciate your quick responses…you are the best!

                1. Yeah do what feels right for you I think that’s the best. You’re very welcome!

                  1. Thank you Young lady…😀

                    1. You’re very welcome

                  2. One more question if you don’t mind..how does a person get paid for their blogs

                    1. Well in my opinion sponsored posts and advertising like through AdSense or other similar platforms would be the best way.

                    2. I just click on AdSense? Or is there a process to getting started

                    3. You have to go to the AdSense site and apply to be a part of it and they will check out your site and see if you are legible and then you can use it.

                    4. Haha..oh Thank You. I will do so! Do I seem legible to you? 😂 You made me smile and laugh out loud at that statement. You’re TOPS

                    5. Haha thanks and I think you need to own your domain to be legible I’m not sure if you do.

                    6. 😂 Why are you not sure that I do?

                    7. You have WordPress in your site so I don’t think it’s eligible. I think you have to buy your domain.

                    8. I think I will. 😀🙏

  20. Yes, these are really good tips. I agree–tags that are too specific won’t do much good. I wouldn’t search “lasagna.” Ha. That made me laugh. And I’m glad to hear someone say you don’t have to have a niche. General interest blogs are great.

    1. Thanks I’m glad you agree and lol yeah lasagna is not the best tag to use!

  21. That last portion about people only leaving their links is so true. It happens so many times on youtube, people just trying to get subscribers/followers. I think it would be much better to have 10 genuine followers than 100 fake ones.

    1. Yes I absolutely agree what’s the point of having so many followers but no comments or interaction that would be very sad.

    2. I completely agree.

  22. Great suggestion. Will keep in mind.

    1. Thank you!

  23. Ooh the first one is something I have trouble with. I LOVE tagging posts with just one specific word, so I’m gonna try your tip lol!
I 100% agree with the comments. Sometimes I don’t even respond to people who leave boring comments where I can tell they didn’t read my post or care I guess. Thanks for sharing!!

    1. Thank you and hope the tagging thing works. As tempting as it is it’s better to go with something less specific.
I hate when people leave comments with just a link or something like great post check out my blog. Like that’s super annoying.

  24. Great tips!! Thank youl.

    1. Thank you!

  25. Hey very helpful tips! Thanks for the advice 🙂

    1. Thank you!

  26. Thanks on this! Esp for me, a blog beginner

    1. You’re very welcome hope they help!

  27. Good advice. As far as tags go, I’ve gone back and forth with tags. I used to put tons of specific tags in, then a coworker told me it doesn’t help with search engines, it just makes it easier for people on your site to click on a tag and find all the other stuff you’ve posted with that tag. Now, I’m not an SEO guru so make of that what you will – I definitely need to do more research.

    1. Yeah I think I agree it usually makes it harder for people to get to your blog when using a search engine. But do your research for sure because different people use different tags helpful!

  28. Great advice Pooja!

    1. Thank you!

  29. I’ve recently published posts written around a single topic and they’ve been popular because, lol ‘who knows the reason why?’ Otherwise I write whatever floods my imagination that day, which could be cooking food, walking the dog or writing about sex with women I know….…….… 😀 ‘you pays your money and makes your choice.

    (A great posting btw PoojaG.)

    1. Thank you and yeah sometimes random things are popular posts for some reason!

  30. That’s interesting about the tags. I usually have general: photography, writing, paranormal romance, books, but then specific related to the photos I share: cardinal, sunrise, etc. I’ll have to see if a more general term like bird would be better. 🙂 If you look at some sites like DeviantArt, the tags are more general.

    1. Did you say paranormal romance?
Is that specific or general on deviant art?

      1. I think it’s general

        1. 😂 Thank you for the laughter kid. I hope you get a wagon for your birthday. And yes, generally -the spring art. –

          1. Lol thanks

    2. Yeah that’s true DeviantArt has very general tags and I think it definitely works much better to have those sort of tags.

  31. Awesome suggestions 🙂

    1. Thank you!

  32. Reblogged this on Idoappointments's Blog and commented:
    Well said! 🙂

    1. Thanks for the reblog!

  33. I have a question that’s way off the subject.
What is the meaning of the dots between words on the internet speak? Example, I.Love.You.

    1. I think it’s for emphasis

      1. Thank You for answering me Young Lady!
I enjoy your brilliance, very much! ☺🐼

        1. You’re very welcome I’m happy to help!

  34. Picking a niche when blogging really narrows your scope and I think could be really dangerous. Unless you’re Sheldon cooper and you love trains and only trains… I think picking a niche would be tough. I totally loved reading this post. Thank you for your words.

    1. Thank you so much and I actually really like reading blogs with multiple niches because they’re super fun and there’s something new everyday. Not saying that Fun With Flags isn’t great 😂

  35. Great tips! Especially liked the one referring to how to title your post. Thank u so much.

    1. Thank you so much!

  36. Pleasant suggestions to keep posts drawing visitors

You are very complimentary to my focusing sometimes. 😂
    Always on top of everything!!
    I’m blessed to know you.

    1. Aww thank you!!

  42. Great advice! For me, it all depends on your goal. My own experience is that titles alone can bring a lot of traffic.

    1. That is very true titles are very important!

    1. Thanks!

  43. Long as you having fun! That’s what matters to me.

    1. Yup that’s the most important!

      1. 😀👓 I learn things still about fun.

I like the way you asked for people to connect on social media. I have the tags available, but I don’t ask people to use them. Looks classy, nice work.

    1. Hahah thanks it took me like 2 years to figure out I should add that 😂

  56. This is amazing! I’m just getting into blogging and really appreciate the advice!

    1. Thank you so much!

  57. I couldn’t agree more about the niche thing. I wouldn’t have the attention span to stick to a niche!

    1. Lol same it can be exhausting to just write about one niche!

  58. Really appreciate your advice. Very helpful for a brand new blogger like me! Thanks!

    1. Thank you so much glad it helped!

  59. A question about your tags comment: Couldn’t you include both “food” and “sandwich”. I know I don’t want to have more tags than words in my post but would it be hurting my blog to be both general an specific?

    1. Not at all but make sure you check the limit of how many tags you can use because if you use too many tags WordPress will mark your post as spam and it won’t show on the tags section.

        1. No problem!
