How To Prioritize Your Mental Health In University

How To Prioritize Your Mental Health In University

I asked on one of my posts last week what type of posts you guys wanted to read and quite a few said about mental health and some said about university so I decided to write a kind of two in one post! University can be stressful and overwhelming for a lot of people and if you have mental health problems it can be that way even more so. Here are some on how to prioritize your mental health in university:

Take care of your body

Make sure you’re sleeping on time, eating right and getting some exercise. It may seem like time consuming or a waste of time but these are actually really important to your mental health. Not eating well and a lack of sleep and exercise can really mess up your brain chemicals and make your mental health problems worse.

Plan everything out

Make sure to plan everything out, for example, write all the due dates for your paper on a planner so that you know when something is due and aren’t caught off guard. This is a great way to decrease your stress levels and to be proactive and do your work in advance so that you’re not overwhelmed at the last minute.

Meditation and relaxation

Taking some time to meditate and relax for at least a few minutes a day really helps to calm you down and decrease your stress levels. Remember to take some time to just do nothing and breathe a little- you deserve it!

Seek help

If you feel overwhelmed or as though things aren’t going well or as planned please seek help from professionals. Most campuses have counsellors and for some reason if you are unable to physically go to a professional there are online sites that offer online counselling with professional therapists.

I hope these tips on how to prioritize your mental health in university were helpful. Do you follow any of them? Would you like to share some tips of your own? Let me know in the comments section below because I would love to hear from you! Or simply stop by and say hi!

  2. I can’t even express how important it is to take care of your body. When I was in college, it’s one of the things that I ignored. I am about to go back for my masters and taking care of my body is number one on my list of priorities while attending school. My mental health was so bad. After realizing that I just need to take better care of my overall body, it should make this a lot easier than getting my bachelor’s.

    1. Yeah mine started to deteriorate and I realized that I needed to take care of myself better. Best of luck with your masters!

      1. Thank you!!!

        1. You’re welcome!

  3. You nailed this blog post imo. I can relate to all of the above points mentioned. 💛

I failed a winter semester in April because my mental health was so bad. I also stopped eating right after getting bronchitis and laryngitis last January. At that point, I gave up trying to be super healthy because I got sick anyways…. and then I didn’t allow myself any fun whatsoever and basically slaved away in the library on weekends. I didn’t have time for my family at all, and didn’t have a social life either. 🙇‍♀️

I certainly didn’t blog. You can see where I stopped blogging as I skipped several months in a row. Whenever I did write, it was usually about my struggles in university. When I go back in January, I plan to continue blogging since it’s my therapeutic outlet. Writing helps me make sense of my tangled thoughts. 💛

    1. Writing is a beautiful thing. It serves as an outlet for me to be able to de-stress and unwind.

      1. A very beautiful thing indeed! ♥️

      2. Absolutely writing is such an amazing outlet!

      3. Some really useful tips here, I especially found making lists useful when I was at uni! Having so many different deadlines for different modules made me feel rather muddled, so having it all neatly planned out just made my head feel so much clearer. Such a simple thing but so effective! Xx

        1. Definitely agree to this. I have always been an organized person and having a way to stay organized and planned out will keep you on track.

          1. Absolutely organizing yourself is so important!

        2. Yes making lists/a plan makes a huge difference even though it’s so simple to do!

    2. Yeah it’s very easy to lose yourself and to forget to take care of yourself when you’re in university but I think you actually do better in university when you take care of your health.

Writing is a great outlet and definitely helps a lot!

All the best going back in Jan!

  4. Great post 👍

    1. Thank you!

  5. What is “mental” health? In my own mother tongue, it literally translates to “spiritual” health. Someone got confused.

Can we draw blood, test it and find “depression?” Or grow cultures in Petri dishes to find paranoia, kleptomania or nymphomania? Sometimes, I think conditions people get treated for is imaginary. Not to the patient but….

If those smart Japanese tech giants come up with something similar to the CAT Scan toy my countrymen invented, it would be more credible. Prick your finger and a little machine says how many women you’re going to beat today. Stick out your tongue and say “aahh” while a sneaky peek at your adenoids will predict how prone you are to molest a toddler or steal a cow.

This whole thing of non-testable conditions that get people locked up in asylums to get “treated” with drugs that make normal people crazy, sound crazy to me.

And, as man is a little trinity yet this get denied by people ill-equipped to get to diagnose & treat….
Imagine calling the neurologist if your car ran its main bearings, or an auto-electrician when you had a stroke. Should a stonemason fix teeth?

Some areas of “science” interlope onto the areas of another discipline. Not on the basis of scientific evidence but “scientific” beliefs or opinion.

A really scary thought, don’t you think?

    1. Yeah I don’t like the reliance on drugs either I think they get rid of the symptoms whereas a lot of times we need to treat the cause.

      1. High carb intakes may be the cause in many cases, combined with insulin resistance or pre-diabetes.

  7. YEEEEEESSSSSSS to student posts.

    Thank you for sharing.

More student stufff! I’m not even a student but this was very informative for real life, too. (and not just university)

    1. Thank you and I agree I think you should always prioritize your mental health whether you’re in university or working!

  8. Great post and thank you. Both my sons experienced anxiety and procrastination, which led to depression while at Uni. Having grown up with a Mental Health Nurse as a mum, they both knew to ask for and accept professional support. They’re great advocates for mental health wellness and counselling, I’m so proud of them for seeking help because now they are both emotionally stable and strong and able to support their current partners who both have anxiety. They’re all such high achievers and put a lot of pressure on themselves to be at the top of their game, hence the anxiety.

    1. Yeah a lot of times we end up pressuring ourselves to do great in education but it deteriorates our mental health. I’m glad your sons were able to get help and deal with their mental health issues.

      1. Thank you and keep up your great work. x

  9. Another great post from you. Seeking help is critical and really good advice !

    1. Thank you glad you enjoyed the post! Seeking help is definitely very important when you’re struggling.

  10. It is so important to take care of our bodies while in school.
One thing I advise my English Second Language Students to do when they go on the regular university classes is to stay up with the schedule of reading and assignments the syllabus has so they do not fall behind.

    1. Yeah it definitely is so important to plan everything out and not leave things to the last minute.

  12. As a recent college graduate I couldn’t agree more! Your mental health is far more important than any class and you need to understand what your limits are. We are humans FIRST, students second. I see too many friends of mine overwhelmed and over working themselves to the point of breakdowns. It’s truly sad that the educational system makes them feel as if a grade in a class is priority over their personal health and well-being.

    Well said! 🙂

    1. Thanks and I love how you put it- we are humans first!

  13. it’s so hard!

  14. Getting enough sleep and the right nutrition is so key for maintaining your mental health!!
