Books I’ve Read Recently

I haven’t been reading a lot of novels or non-school related books. So, I haven’t been writing a lot about books or book reviews. But recently I asked you guys what posts you wanted to see on the blog. And a lot of people said books. So, here are some books I’ve read recently and my mini reviews on them.

Book Review fangirl rainbow rowell

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

This is a book about two twin sisters. One is an introvert who writes fanfic in her free time and the other is an extrovert attempting to live her best life in university.  This book is very hyped up and everyone was obsessed with it a while back so I decided to read it. Maybe my expectations were too high because everyone talked about how amazing this book was or maybe I’m too old for YA now but in all honesty I thought this book was not all that. It wasn’t bad, it just was not good either. I thought it started out great and the story line was interesting and I could relate with the introvert, fan fiction writing twin but as the story progressed- at least for me- it just deteriorated. I would give it a 2.5/5. 

Bossypants by Tina Fey

I LOVE Tina Fey- obviously who doesn’t- and I LOVED this book. It’s all about her life and where she came from and how she reached where she was. Tina Fey is just so funny, down-to-earth, genuine and sweet and you can so see this in her writing as well. I would definitely recommend this book if you’re looking for something fun and relaxing to read. I would give it a 4.5/5.

The Roads To Modernity by Gertrude Himmelfarb

So I had to read this one for my American Enlightenment class. It’s about the Enlightenment’s that occurred in Britain, France and America. I thought it was an interesting and informative read, however, I felt that Himmelfarb tended to focus on certain parts of the Enlightenment while ignoring the others. And, I also thought she ignored key aspects such as the effects of the Enlightenment on education, women’s lives, race and slavery although she did talk about the latter two but not in as much detail as I thought she should have. I would recommend it if you want to read about the Enlightenment in general but not if you’re a historian or someone who wants to read a more detailed explanation of the Enlightenment. I would give it a 3/5.

On The Road by Jack Kerouac

So, I reread this some time ago since it is one of my favourite books of all times and has inspired me so much to come out of shell and do what I like/enjoy doing. I have to say Kerouac is as inspiring as ever. For a more detailed review of this book click here. I would give this book a 4.8/5.

  1. I’ve had friends hype up books for me to read to and then I start reading them , and I’m kind of let down . Like oh this really wasn’t as good guys lol . Nice list .

  2. I love ‘On the Road Again’. Actually one of my favourite quotes of all time is in that book.

  6. AH, Tina Fey is sucha force, I’ve always wanted to read that book but never get around to it! Have you read any other biographies that inspired you?

    1. You should totally read it! I read Ben Franklin’s which was pretty good.

  8. I’ll have to read the roads to modernity. I found American history to be my least favorite subject in school so I am not well educated on it! But when you study the revolution and civil war for 12 years straight with no focus on the rest of the world it tends to get old.

    1. Yeah that’s fair. For me it’s the other way around- I hadn’t read much American History before so now it’s really fascinating for me. The book actually has much more about the British and French Enlightenment so I think you’ll still enjoy it.

    1. Yeah I had it on my TBR list for a long time so I was like okay I need to read it now!

  10. I really like Fangirl, but if I’m being honest, it’s not high-quality by any means. To me it was a nice, fun escape but I can see why you wouldn’t like it!

    1. Yeah that’s what it felt like to me too but what made me kind of sad was that it had so much potential to be better than it was- it could have been high quality.

      1. Yes, I agree. Whenever books don’t live up to their potential it’s really sad. 🙁

  12. I completely agree with what you said about Fangirl! I remember everyone being obsessed with it and I wanted so badly to join in on the hype but the book just wasn’t as good as I thought it would be. And what annoyed me even more was reading the fanfiction she wrote in the book.

    1. Yeah it was so overhyped and the fanfic got to a point where it was annoying. The sad part was I felt it was such a good storyline at first if it had been written differently it could have been an amazing book!

      1. Couldn’t agree more. I was very surprised when she released a novel of the fan fiction itself and later considered making it a trilogy. I think it might appeal to a lot of the younger generation but I’ve definitely moved on to different types of books at this point in my life.

        1. Yeah I guess it does have an audience especially with the youth but personally I would definitely not read that.

  14. I really would like to reread “On the Road” – it’s been so long since I’ve read that one! Also, I hate when something is so hyped that the actual story or item doesn’t meet the expectations!

    1. Yes you do it’s so fun to reread it and find all these new gems in it! Yeah over hyped books are the worst.

  18. I understand what you mean by over hyped book, it happens with movies too😀😀
    Often times of started books and read them like nothing else is doable, and then they become boring and uninteresting, I’d just force myself to finish up, not out of desire but just so I could add them to my list. Let me mention that I don’t succeed with the forceful reading ever. Sometimes it’s not friends, I hype them too.

    I’d like to read “On the road” such grading you did for it. Now I hope it’s worth it.

  21. It’s a shame that the hype of Fangirl let you down. It’s a phenomenon that is pretty common unfortunately it seems! I think we forget that enjoyment of a book is oftentimes subjective, that not everyone will enjoy a book that we loved – and that’s okay! 😊

    1. Yeah everyone is unique and it’s sad when something is hyped up and you don’t feel that way about it but it’s fine we can always find books that we do love!
