Courses I’m Taking This Semester

Since some of you are curious, I decided to share the courses I’m taking this semester. I’m taking a mix of history and other courses.

History Courses

Roman History- okay not going to lie this one isn’t super interesting but I still enjoy it to an extent. I really like learning about Roman history but I am more of a modern history kind of person so this is a little out of my area of interest. It also doesn’t help that most of the people in my seminar class are kind of unfriendly.

History of Diaspora’s– This class is super interesting to me and I am so glad I took it. So far we have learnt a lot about Jewish diaspora communities and soon we’re going to learn about other diaspora communities. Since I am from a diaspora community I find it very relatable and I really like my professor he has such a mellow vibe. The only problem is that it’s a three hour class and sometimes I end up tuning out by mistake.

American Enlightenment- I have taken quite a few American history classes and one with the same professor so I knew I was going to like this one. It’s been so fun and interesting and I look forward to learning more. We are reading both Franklin’s and Jefferson’s autobiographies which are so fascinating.

American Popular Culture- This is a Popular Culture/History course that I am so obsessed with. This is one of my favourite classes I’ve taken so far. My professor is so understanding so we have a much smaller workload and a really fun final paper. We are basically learning about the past American culture and often we compare it to the American culture now.

Other

Archaeology- Not going to lie- the Indiana Jones movies had a lot to do with me taking this course. It’s super fun and interesting- nothing like Indiana Jones though- and I think learning it really compliments the history courses I’m taking. Plus, my seminar class is really fun and friendly!

Country Music- Okay, so this is just the best class ever (may change my mind after I get my marks for my first assignment…). It is super fun, absolutely fascinating and my professor is really good. Even though we have no breaks the two hour class flies by and I rarely tune out. I love country music and learning about it in detail is so interesting because I knew nothing about its origins and how it became popular. Seriously loving this class!

  1. I am curious to know what you are studying for your degree. I’m guessing Bachelor of Arts with a major in history?

    1. Yup you got it!

      1. Lucky guess 🤗

  2. Do you know anything about the financial aide process and online classes. Wondering if you need money up front to go to school.

    1. Yeah you have to have a certain amount of money up front but there are scholarships available depending on what school you apply to.

  3. That is an interesting list of courses. Have you decided on a major, yet?

    1. Thanks and yeah I’m majoring in History!

  4. That’s an interesting list. I majored in history and had to study a bunch of these! I also found Roman history a little boring lol.

    1. Lol glad to know you get where I’m coming from! I think it’s a mixture of the fact that it’s so long ago and there isn’t a lot of primary evidence.

  5. Research the 300k white British slaves in the pioneering days of America.

Research the 1,25 million white slaves raided from Europe, taken to North Africa & Arabia by Muslims in the 1600s to 1800s.

Currently a diaspora of esp white South Africans fleeing a neo-Marxist very corrupt, inefficient and sometimes criminal regime. Many blacks also leave. It’s not a racial issue but a disaster of incompetence.

I think there has to be a Polish diaspora since WW2 and communism.

Politics today is the history of tomorrow.

    1. I’ve learnt about most of that. Very fascinating.

      1. Yes, it is. We only ever hear about African slaves and then a half-truth. Nobody ever mentions the others.

        1. I think that’s because the African slave trade was in huge numbers compared to the others.

          1. African 326k British 300k European 1,25m

            1. 11-12 million slaves were transported to America alone which is a huge number.

              1. Where does that figure come from? Looking at lots of sources, they all agree on some 326k. That is USA. Yes, if you look at all the Americas, especially South America, it is much different.

  6. Hi Pooja, quick heads up, it looks like you left out the donation link (at the bottom of your post).

    1. Thanks for letting me know I appreciate it!

  20. Really good concept

    1. Thank you!

  21. Your classes all sound so interesting – the Country and American Pop Culture classes seem so fun! I’d be so fascinated to take your diaspora class.

My classes are largely quantitative but I used to love classes like these when I was in high school and undergrad. I love history and English – there is always so much to learn!

    1. Those two are definitely my favorite courses this semester!!

  22. I find ancient (Roman0 hostory fascinating, but it’s frustrating because so little is known (it was a long time ago!) It almost seems exotic to me.

    1. Yeah I find that frustrating too there’s so little primary evidence!

  23. Hi! You’re classes sound awesome!! I took am African Diaspora class back when I was in college and it was just so crazy to learn about the struggles people faced. It was largely based in Africa but my professor put a well timeline on slavery began and how it goes back waaaaay back. I was just wondering if your Diaspora course focused on one group or is a broad course?

    1. That sounds like a really interesting class! My class focuses on diasporas in general so we talk about multiple diaspora groups. So far we’ve learnt about the Jewish, Irish, African and Armenian diasporas.

  24. Hi! Your classes sound awesome!! I took am African Diaspora class back when I was in college and it was just so crazy to learn about the struggles people faced. 25. that’s a full load of classes, good luck! and that country music class does sound great.

    1. Thank you and it’s one of my favourite courses so far!

  26. I did a whole 3 year geology degree based on my love of Jurassic Park…….. in 3 years not one f***ing dinosaur!!! 😂

    1. Lollll I understand your frustration!

  27. I would have loved college more if I was able to take country music and American pop culture. I never had those classes as an option. Sounds like you have fun classes this semester

    1. Yeah I think classes like that are very recent. Yeah it’s a fun semester for sure!

  28. Love that you are taking country music. Never knew there was a class for that. It was my life growing up in Texas in the 60’s & 70’s.

    1. I’m learning about the country music made in Texas in the 70’s and the outlaw sound that originated from there!

      1. I was born & raised in Texas & my childhood was in the 70’s. Hope you write about some things you learn. I’m sure I lived some of it. 🤠

        1. I most definitely will be writing about it because I loved the Austin sound and country music from Texas at the time!
