How Not To Market Your Blog

Recently I made a post on how to market your blog. However, I decided to do one on how not to market your blog because there are a lot of mistakes that people make when attempting to market their blog. Here are things that you should avoid when marketing your blog:

Spam people

If you are constantly emailing, commenting or DMing people who are clearly not interested in working with your blog at the moment it will likely annoy them. And will make it less likely they will work with you even in the future. Spamming people is the easiest way to get yourself blacklisted. How Not To Market Your Blog | spamming gif

Being too insistent

It’s a good idea to reach out to people however insisting that they work with you even when they are clearly not interested will not be helpful in any way. In fact it will do the opposite and will make them dislike you too much to ever work with you.

Know how to take no for an answer

Again reaching out is a great idea but if you are going to be immature, rude or extremely petty when you are rejected reaching out to people isn’t for you. When you reach out to people the majority of the time you will be rejected unless you have a very large or very popular blog. Rejection is a part of marketing and you should learn how to deal with it in a healthy way instead of taking it personally. If you are polite about the rejection they may actually store your contact and reach out at some point when they’re looking for bloggers to work with in the future.

Buy fake followers/views

Sponsors will almost instantly know if you are using fake followers/traffic and it’s very easy to lose sponsors this way. I have a full post on why buying followers/traffic is a bad idea so for more information click here.

Don’t pressure others to help you

If you are rejected, or even if you weren’t, make sure you don’t pressure others to help you/work with you. It will not get the results you want. And it will turn them off to the idea of you working together in the future. I’ve had people try to pressure me to work with them. And all it did was guarantee that I never would.

  1. Great advice! I think it’s easy to underestimate how much your blog will grow with consistent and meaningful content.

    1. Thanks and yeah putting out meaningful content is really the key to a successful blog in a lot of ways!

  2. Going the organic way is harder but it does get you results.
I guess we living in an era of instant gratification want things to be done fast. And want it done our way.

    1. Yeah people want fast results without putting in any of the work but it doesn’t work that way in reality. A lot of work needs to be put in before your blog is genuinely successful.

  3. Excellent advice.

    1. Thank you!

  11. Hi PoojaG I love your content about __________ please check out my blog when you have a moment.
😉 Is that how to spam?

    1. No they are usually not that polite! It’s usually “I think you will love my blog blahblahblah” 😂

  12. I agree with this. No matter how great co-ops are, it’s obvious when someone is reaching out because your follower number is bigger than theirs. Thanks for a great read! These are sure important to keep in mind!

    1. So glad you enjoyed the post! And yes it’s quite obvious when people only reach out for your number count. That’s why I only work with blogs that I genuinely like and that support my blog.

      1. There’s no reason to collab with anyone who’s not genuine about liking you – time is precious and life is too short for that! 😀

  13. Thank you for helpful tips

    1. You’re welcome hope they help!

      1. You always post helpful blogs

  14. Wise advice!

  15. It bothers me SO MUCH when people buy followers because (1) it is obvious and (2) it is unethical… it is like the equivalent of lying on a resume … especially when people use fake followers to deceive brand partners.
Also, in this day and age, it is so easy to spot because many online platforms track this!

    1. Same it makes me so mad when I see people who have like 2/3 likes and thousands of followers. Like it’s so obvious and so insulting to people who actually worked hard for their followers. Yup it’s so easy to spot even for potential sponsors who would rather work with people with a genuine following.

  16. Great advise. I appreciate you sharing them. Thank you.

    1. Thank you so much!

  17. Thanks for the tips!

  22. I. didn’t even know it us possible to buy wordoress follows.
Not the start thing thing to do though

    1. Yeah I didn’t realise either till I saw someone do it and it kind of both shocked and disappointed me.

  23. Really great post. I most definitely learnt the hard way in the early days by posting too much and getting accounts suspended due to being overzealous as there is a very thin line between promotion and what social media consider spamming

    1. Thank you. Yes, posting too often is definitely an issue and sometimes the system does think you’re spam by mistake.
