Stop Using Mental Health As An Excuse To Get Attention

Stop Using Mental Illnesses As An Excuse!

A Little History Behind People Using Mental Health Problems As An Excuse

So, a while back I wrote a post called Stop Using Mental Health As An Excuse To Be Lazy. And it addressed the issue of people faking mental health problems to get out of doing things. Or faking it in order to get special treatment and how this affects people who actually do have mental health problems and require special care. Recently, I saw something similar and thought I would do a follow up to the original post I did.

Stop Using Mental Health As An Excuse To Get Attention

I rarely address YouTube drama here. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever done so. But recently I started following some “drama” that was just so problematic that I wanted to address it here. It was not only problematic but also something I have experienced personally as well and something that is a much larger issue than just some YouTube videos.

How It All Started

As you know my semester is over and I have some free time on my hands. I have been spending this free time writing, working on my blog, visiting more blogs and more. While I do all this I like to watch something on YouTube in the background. And I watch quite a few videos about mental health. So, I guess my recommended decided to recommend me a video about Trisha Paytas faking having a mental illness.

Now if you know Trisha Paytas you know she’s a troll, that’s how she got famous and that’s how she makes her money. She fakes pretty much everything and anything for attention so I was not surprised. Basically she made a video about how “she has Dissociative Identity Disorder” however nothing she describes as her “symptoms” are even actual symptoms of DID. It was so badly researched that I’m pretty sure she hadn’t even Googled what DID was let alone the symptoms. She also went on to call someone who actually has been diagnosed with DID “crazy”, out her ex as having DID and so much more.

In the next video she attacks the girl she called “crazy” again and a bunch of other people who are part of the DID community on YouTube who called her out. As of when I wrote this she still hasn’t admitted to lying and continues to pretend to have DID. If you want more details on the situation check out these videos- I linked them as they explain the situation better and I didn’t want to link Trisha’s actual videos and give her more views:

My Thoughts

Although I was not surprised by her behavior I was very pissed off for multiple reasons. I’m a history major so I really prefer putting my thoughts out in essay form. But for the sake of this not turning into a rant post with no structure I will be addressing my feelings in point form.

  1. First of all I feel so sorry for the DID community on YouTube. I can not even imagine how difficult it must be to talk about something so personal in front of millions of people. And I am sure that they receive a lot of hate and negativity from trolls as it is. Her behaviour just worsens the stigma that DID isn’t real and that people fake having it for attention. Her videos undo so much of the good other mental health advocates are doing and that is just pure evil.
  2. Calling people who were actually diagnosed as having DID “crazy” also does so much harm. People with mental health problems already face this kind of name calling and discrimination on a regular basis. And this is exactly the kind of thing we are fighting against. I mean, can you even imagine faking having a mental health problem for clout. And then calling people who actually have that illness “crazy.”
  3. One of the biggest problems I had with this situation was the fact that she outed her ex for having DID. Without so much as giving them a heads up. Telling people you have a mental health disorder is scary enough as it is. And being outed in front of millions of people must be terrifying. You should never out someone for having a mental health problem especially not online.
  4. I’ve talked about this multiple times but there is a lot of bias with how mental health problems are treated and how physical health problems are treated. Because mental illnesses may not always be visible people tend to either take advantage of them the way Trisha Paytas is doing. Or people tend to act like they are not real and just completely deny their existence. I think the fact that she is faking a mental problem and not a physical one is evidence of this bias. YouTube would have likely taken some sort of action against her videos/channel if she had faked having a serious physical illness. I know YouTube censors videos all the time and yet stuff like this stays up.
  5. This whole situation actually has a lot to do with the broader problems faced by the mental health community. Trisha is not the first person to call someone suffering from a mental illness “crazy” or out someone and unfortunately she won’t be the last. She is also not the first person to use mental health issues as an excuse for attention and money. These things tend to happen way more often then they should and it is very saddening. As someone who suffers from an anxiety disorder and depression I see these things all the time and it makes me want to share my experiences and posts like this even more because clearly we have a long way to go before we can break away from the stigma.

Conclusion

I think the only thing we can do in this situation is to keep speaking up against stuff like this. As well as share out actual mental health stories. That’s the only way to get rid of the stigma. And stop people from taking advantage of something so real and difficult that so many people actually suffer from. I also hope that YouTube does a better job censoring/banning videos like these. Because they do actual damage to people and can really affect people with actual mental health problems. And to people out there, please stop using mental health as an excuse.

  1. I’m a history major too!! And I have DID and I think this seriously messed up the entire community. Like I really don’t know why she even began to think that this was okay!

    1. Woohoo history! I think DID was trending for a while and she was just trying to get some attention. I can not even imagine how frustrating her videos must be for you and the whole DID community in general. I can’t believe she is STILL going at it and basically publishing the same video multiple times pretending her personalities are doing it.

  2. Trisha Paytas truly is a troll. But I do think she deserves to have this behavior called out. Sometimes people are like, “Oh, she’s just trolling,” but that doesn’t mean she isn’t causing real harm.
Katerino is another person I felt used mental health as an excuse. As soon as she got caught cheating with all those guys, she jumped right to blaming it on depersonalization. It just wasn’t right for her to try and dodge accountability by blaming it on mental illness.

    1. Yeah exactly- even if one person believes her or begins looking down at the mental health community because of her the damage will be done. Some people understand that she’s a troll but not everyone does.
I don’t know much about Katerino but yes people use that excuse to get out of taking responsibility for their actions a lot which is absolutely ridiculous.

  3. Trisha Paytas is the worst! Everything she does is awful.
Using mental health as a crutch to support your need for attention is so unfair to those that really struggle! Great post!

    1. Yeah she has honestly made some of the worst videos ever. This was honestly so low even for her.

    1. Thanks!

  4. What’s funny is as soon as I read your title I thought about Trisha Paytas. I stumbled across her channel a few years ago when I was painting my house and needed some nonsense going in the background. She talks so fast but after a few days, I was able to understand all her jibber jabber. Since then I will listen to her as I cook or do house housework and I can’t help but feel sorry for her. I think its the mom in me that just wants to give her a hug and then pop her in the forehead. Bless her confused heart.

    1. Aww it’s so sweet of you to still see the good in her. I am honestly not that nice lol. But yeah she is kind of a sad person and she seems like she has a sad life which is why she behaves this way for attention.

      1. Her life is crumbling. That fans only thing is disgusting. Her content is ridiculous

        1. Yeah I heard about that. She’s just a very sad person.

          1. She really is!

  5. This is such a sick thing to do. So I don’t watch such videos. Even though you have provided the link, I won’t be clicking on them. I feel that she doesn’t need more views. It’ll be an utter waste of my time and I don’t want such a person to gain from it

    1. Don’t worry the videos I linked just explain the videos she made- they aren’t her videos. I did not want to link her videos and give them any more views/attention. She is really a sad person.

    1. Thanks!

  6. This is too true. I have seen people deny the existence of bad mental health and others who used it as a crutch.
    Thanks for the post!

    1. Thanks and yes it is just so sad.

  7. PoojaG thank you for raising awareness of ways horrible people abuse mental illness and leverage mental illness as a way to get attention…Sadly too many hide behind mental illness as an excuse to behave badly and not be held to account for horribly bad behavior…Such as poor manners and such…It is high time that the stigma’s associated with mental illness be removed…Some of the brightest most brilliant contributors to society experienced mental illness in the form of depression or bipolar also known as manic depression…Stress affects the mental health of many people and mental health can change from excellent to poor depending on stress factors…Sadly many today are criminally insane these criminally insane ones are the ones often in the best positions of authority and power such Germany’s Hitler who was clearly criminally insane…Excellent work and sorry my comment is long…I noticed your new blog entry loved it and had to give you a big high five for calling out horrible people on their crap…Not easy to do but you did it well done….

    1. Thank you for your comment- I’m glad you expressed your thoughts. it’s definitely sad to see people use mental health this way while people with actual mental health problems are being treated badly due to the stigma.

  8. This is bad….

    1. It definitely is.

  9. People like her who are attention seekers just for money, are an absolute disgrace to society as a whole. I can’t imagine the world we live in, where something so serious can be fake just for the sake of fame or views. YouTube really needs to update it’s policy of demonetising videos/ striking them (because they’re usually quite vague about the reasons for the said action)
I can imagine how traumatic it must’ve been for the mental health community, especially those who suffer from DID. I’m glad you’ve raised some awareness on the negative impact of faking mental, it’s quite helpful.

    1. Oops, I meant “mental health”. Stupid keyboard didn’t let me finish my sentence.🙄

      1. Lol now worries autocorrect is super annoying

    2. It is a very sad world. And it’s not only her it’s so many people especially on YouTube and social media. It’s like every time they do something stupid instead of owning up to it they blame it on their “mental illness”. YouTube definitely needs to do more- at the very least demonetise the videos so that people don’t have the incentive to make videos like this.
I wanted to talk about this because I see it all the time and we really need to address the issue.

  10. I think Mental health problem is such a serious issue but it is better that don’t use it as an excuse… 🙂 <3

    1. Yes absolutely!

  11. really well written xx

    1. Thank you so much!

  12. Very well written

    1. Thank you!

      1. Anytime 😊

    1. Thank you!

  13. This is horrible! Many of us in our family have mental health problems, most of all child #3. It is so very difficult already. It’s awful to think that not only would someone pretend to have mental health problems, but would also call someone who did “crazy”!!! There’s a special place in hell for someone like that!!!

    1. Yeah it is definitely so offensive for people who actually do suffer from mental illness. We already face so much stigma as it is and this just makes it so much worse. I really hope YouTube demonetizes her videos. She should not be making money off this.

  14. Drama sells, it always has. As a history major you know this. That isnt to say that everyones motives are monetary or nefarious but I look at things like this skeptically, although I often still do click. After all drama sells…

    1. Yeah unfortunately that’s the problem but I feel like YouTube should do more to stop these kind of videos like at least demonetize them.

  15. It’s sad that people will do anything to get noticed on social media…

    1. It really is.

  16. It is absolutely disgusting that Trisha created these videos that spread misinformation and further stigmatize DID, an already very stigmatized disorder.
One thing, though, just because you mentioned it a few times: Trisha didn’t “out” her ex-girlfriend as having DID. Encina has been open for years about her experiences with DID. She has her own YouTube channel where she talks about mental health and sometimes shows different alters from her system. In fact, the videos Encina made with MedCircle two years ago were the reason why I began to learn more about DID. I’m not sure where people are getting the idea that Trisha “outed” her ex (unless perhaps they think that she was referring to a different ex). What Trisha did was absolutely repugnant, but she never outed anyone as having DID.

    1. Thanks so much for letting me know. I watched this interview with her ex where she said that Trisha talked about her having DID and outed her without first contacting her which is why I assumed that https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnHlMIxtaX4
Since I don’t watch Trisha or her ex’s channel I was not aware that she was already talking about having DID. Thanks again for letting me know.

      1. Oh, right! I forgot about that video she did. The wording is a little confusing, but I guess in a way she was outed because she did not grant permission, but she wasn’t technically publicly outed.

        1. Yeah that’s what threw me off since I didn’t really know much about her other than that interview.

  17. Thanks for sharing the story PoojaG. The only time I watch You a Tube is when I get a link from someone or I am supporting someone channel. I have no idea who she is but that must be horrible even to watch. It sad but now I imagine how about the ones that cannot be spot as fake, I am thinking that they are making it hard for those that really need help to even get help. So sad

    1. Yeah I have not really watched her videos prior to this and I don’t know much about her either but yeah what she did is horrible. It does make it so much more difficult for people who actually have mental health issues.

  18. Very true . Its purposely happen often in more cases. At that time how to behave family member with him is important? It require small common sense and tiny life skill for it.

    1. Yeah I agree it’s just common sense really.

      1. I have lots of experience on it.

  19. At this point, I just don’t pay attention to drama with Trisha. She is so toxic and constantly starts drama for views, so I try not to even watch content that covers her anymore…. with the thought being that if people stopped making videos about her, people would stop caring and she’d lose her platform.
But I remember when videos covering this scandal were popping up all over YouTube.

    1. Yeah I think if people just ignore her videos and stop giving her attention she’ll eventually stop making such videos. I rarely watch anything to do with her because I know how problematic she is but this really got to me.

  20. Interesting post!

    1. Thank you!

  21. I love your longer posts like this! YouTube drama isn’t my thing either but I somehow always find myself watching it at 2AM…
I used to pretend to be more mentally ill than I was to get sympathy when I was very young. I belonged to that subset of western culture that associates suffering and being oppressed with some strange sort of prestige and bragging rights. It’s completely childish to me now but I can understand why people do it. It’s wrong and gross, but I get it.
YouTube has become a tough place to visit in the last few years. Perhaps the internet as a whole has. There are still people putting out useful content but they’re so difficult to find that it’s not a viable way to make a living anymore, unfortunately. It’s kind of like what happened to the news… they realized the only way to survive was to focus on the things that make people angry.

    1. Thank you! Yes YouTube drama can be interesting sometimes especially when you’re bored.
I’m glad you were able to understand that it’s wrong to fake/exaggerate mental illness. It seems that people only want to see something that will get them feeling a certain way for five minutes before they move on to the next thing and content creators have picked up on that.

  22. It’s a ‘trend’ among teenagers to pretend they have a mental health disorder. They fake it almost to the point where it becomes real. It’s a huge barrier for those who do suffer with mental health problems, because adults can’t tell if it’s genuine or another teen putting on a show. Very important post.

    1. Yeah especially depression and anxiety have become a trend for a lot of people. It’s so stupid considering how many people actually suffer from these disorders and genuinely need help.

  23. I’ve never heard of this person and I’m so glad. What makes her think it’s okay to make up fake stories about her having a mental illness?

    1. Honestly she is just a very problematic person. I really hope YouTube does more to shut people like her down in the future.

  24. Ugh! I didn’t watch the videos but just reading of what they consist gets me so frustrated! It is definitely difficult trying to end the stigma when we have trolls like her out there 🤦‍♀️

    1. Yeah it’s like we take one step forward and people like her take us two steps back. It’s very frustrating for sure.

  25. That’s so sad and sick that someone can pretend to have mental illness, when others are genuinely struggling with their own mental health each day and looking for help just understand why are they feeling this way.
    Thanks for sharing, great post.

    1. Yes it’s absolutely horrible someone would behave this way. I hope YouTube takes down the videos.

      1. I do hope so too

  26. I’m really grateful you addressed this. People faking mental health problems is a BIG PROBLEM. It does take away from those of us actually experiencing anxiety or in the case of those with DID, their symptoms. People like her, make a mockery of serious illnesses. It’s awful, especially when mental health awareness is so important and can save lives. Great post and thank you for sharing Pooja.

    1. Thank you so much! Yes it’s really messed up how having mental health problems has become some sort of trend- especially with anxiety and depression. It takes away from people who really do need help.

      1. It does. It’s disgusting. I’m so grateful to you for posting about this. Thank you 🙂

        1. Of course- I think if you have a platform you should try to use it for good.

          1. Agree 100% 🙂 I hope you’re having a great Saturday Pooja

            1. I am and hope you’re having a great day too!

              1. Good to hear!!! Thank you !!!

                1. You’re welcome!

  27. Omg I didn’t know you fell into the YT whole! I too am so over Trisha. That was so disrespectful. It bothers me even more that she seems to always get away with it. Thanks for bringing awareness!

    1. Lol yeah I fall into the hole sometimes and it just turns into a thing.
Yeah she’s awful. She’s said/done racist, homophobic and trans-phobic stuff for attention and her videos still don’t get demonetized which is ridiculous.

      1. It really is! Youtube is horrible with keeping up content that shouldn’t be there.

  28. Dude This needs to be heard 💯

    1. Thank you!

  29. Hard eye roll. Hate that people would actually do this, it’s so unfair to the people that genuinely have these conditions. P.S. I just discovered your blog. I studied History too and I’m about to start my Masters in Psychology so I think we have a lot in common!

    1. I know people like that are the reason mental health isn’t taken seriously.
Ooh that’s so cool to know! What made you decide to get your masters in Psychology?

  30. This article was so insightful. There are very few people who actually advocate mental health, and I’m glad you’re one of them :)),I also started a mental health service known as adolpsyche,on instagram,do check it out

    1. Thank you and I’ll be sure to check it out!

  31. Hey! Can you write a post on my page regarding mental health awareness!

    1. Thanks for asking but I am currently very busy with university and moving my blog. Maybe in the future.

      1. Definitely! Looking forward to collaborate in near future. Thanks!

        1. Same here!

  32. I’m afraid I only started watching the video … what a complete waste of three minutes. I’m only ever interested in associating myself with happy, positive people and those who WANT to get better if they’re poorly physically or mentally. Just another silly little girl wanting attention bores me senseless. Sorry to be brutal!
