My Blogging Journey #3

My Blogging Journey

My Blogging Journey And Why I Decided To Share It

I would recommend reading part 1 and part 2 of my blogging journey before diving into this post. That way you can understand this one better. I would also like to give all my readers a heads up. My blogging journey posts tend to be a little longer than my regular posts. So, if you don’t like longer posts this may not be for you.

I’ve decided to write six posts on my blogging journey. Since I began blogging almost exactly six years ago I thought I would write one post a week about my blogging journey. I’ll share what happened during each year. As well as what was going on with my life and how it affected my blog. I will also be talking about the technical things like the updates I made, what plan I use, how I customize my plan, the SEO work I got done and more. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy sharing it with you guys. And I hope it helps newer bloggers on WordPress as well.

2017- Everything Starts Coming Together (And Then Falls Apart)

Just to give you guys a small recap- in my last post about my blogging journey I talked about 2016 and how I was suffering from anxiety and depression by that point. I had been suffering from depression for a while so I had figured out how to manage that. But my anxiety disorder had just started to that was something I was still trying to figure out. I had also decided to take a gap year after my A Levels. And spend some time working on me before I start university and everything gets stressful again.

As for blogging, now that I had some time off and was not preoccupied with school/exams I could spend more time blogging and kind of getting the hang of thing. Blogging is a lot of fun but it’s also a lot more work than anyone expects and there are definitely some tricks you need to pick up before your blog starts growing at a consistent rate. By the end of 2016 I had finally gotten the hang of blogging and had figured out a schedule that works for me, my optimum time, how to use the tags feature– but not correctly lol- and that the key to growing your blog is being active on other blogs. I had also gotten more used to my anxiety and was learning how to deal with it better as well as what eases my symptoms.

Gap Year Adventures

One of the things that I really wanted to do during my gap year along with work on myself was travel. I had always loved to travel but didn’t have the resources or time to do so when I was in school. But now that I had all the free time in the world for a few more months and my anxiety was becoming easier to handle I realized that I needed to do some travelling before I start university and that becomes my priority.

Unfortunately, I was not able to travel abroad due to a number of reasons but my dad, sister and I decided travel in the country and go to Mt. Kenya. I actually wrote a post about it when we got back too that you can check out by clicking here. It was such a great experience and gave me something to blog about which is always a plus!

Blogging Was Going Well

My blog was also doing a lot better now that I was starting to get the hang of everything. No, I would not say I had completely gotten the hang of blogging. There was still so much I did not know. I mean I look back to some of my posts now and think “wow, did I really post that.” Or “I should have edited that differently.”

I had however gotten the hang of some stuff like how to get traffic and followers organically and I was trying my best to grow my blog as much as I could. It was working too because I had started getting much higher views than I had gotten in 2015 and 2016 and I was getting at least over two thousand view a month which felt like so many to me back then. I was so happy and I remember feeling more and more like this was it.

Blogging was something that the universe had given me and that it was supposed to be a part of my life. I had just reached 500 followers and than 1000 followers in 2016 and I could see my little baby blog growing before my very eyes. It was exhilarating and for a bit I was kind of addicted to the feeling you get every time your notification bell gets that orange dot. I would keep refreshing the page waiting for comments, likes, follows or shares.

Blogging Achievements

I had a lot of things to celebrate in 2017 when it came to blogging achievements. I celebrated my 2 year blogiversary which if you know me is a lot. Honestly, I am not usually someone who sticks with something unless I am very passionate about it. I get bored very easy and if I don’t enjoy the writing. And I get writers block pretty easy too so to have been writing on this blog for two whole years was a huge achievement for me. And yet another sign showing me that this was my path and that I was going in the right direction.

Another achievement was reaching two thousand followers and than three thousand followers. I was so super happy and honoured to have so many followers. Never had I dreamed that even a thousand people would want to read my work let alone three thousand. I remember taking a picture of my follower count and sending it to my friends. And just being so super excited!

New Friends On My Blogging Journey

Something else that I achieved was that I made a bunch of online friends! As a millennial I was repeatedly told as a child not to talk to strangers so I went out of my way to do just that as an adult (we’re such a weird generation but like in a good way sometimes lol). I’m kidding by the way if any kids are reading this (I highly doubt it but you never know these days…) please don’t talk to strangers especially on the internet!! Anyway I had made a bunch of blogging friends and was really starting to feel like I’m part of the WordPress community.

Blogging also made me come out of my shell a lot more and become more confident and comfortable with talking to new people- something I had always struggled with. It also made me want to explore new things, try new things and do more just so I can share my experiences with you guys. I still feel like I am way more creative because of blogging. There are SO MANY things I would never have done had it not been for blogging. Which is kind of scary to think about. I started learning German (I also started learning German again this year- some things really don’t change lol) and I began sharing that journey on my blog. I also started doing art which I also shared on here.

Adulting

Everything was all well and good until I realised that it was time to start adulting again. I applied to university in Canada and decided to major in History. Although I had earlier wanted to major in Psychology but decided to go for History instead. I got into the university of my choice and before I knew it I was applying for my Visa. And doing a bunch of tests needed for the Visa. I was packing, I was planning and soon I was ready to go to Canada. We left in August and I found it too difficult to continue blogging. I didn’t always have access to the WiFi. And to be honest I just wanted to enjoy the experience in the moment.

I was also super stressed out about all the change and literally did not have the time to blog so that didn’t help the situation. I did blog a little after coming to Canada but it was not very frequently. Also, I posted at random times. And was not able to maintain the schedule I used to have because of all the university work I had to do.

A Drop In My Blogging Journey

Since I did not post much for about four months I obviously lost a lot of traffic and a couple of followers. I did try to stay as active as possible on my blog and continue to visit other blogs. Especially the blogs of bloggers I was friends with. I really wanted to continue supporting everyone who had been so kind to me and had earlier supported me. My views were still over a few thousand but were significantly less than the months before which was to be expected because as I always say in my blogging advice posts staying active is a large part of growing your blog.

University Experiences

Unfortunately, just as I was getting the hang of blogging and had come up with a schedule that worked for me everything in my little blogging world kind of fell apart. Things were going great in real life. I was having new experiences, meeting new people and really enjoying the courses I had taken. Especially Sociology which was so eye opening for me.

However, my blogging life kind of felt like it was falling apart and to be honest after coming home from a long day at school and having a bunch of assignments and stuff to do I was not in the right mindset to blog regularly. I’m also a creature of habit and I think I had fallen out of habit when it came to blogging. I did still want to blog- I just needed to figure everything out again and readjust everything. With the time difference I had a new optimum posting time, traffic from different countries, different topics I wanted to write about and so much more.

I went home to Kenya in December for a few weeks. And I ended up realising that my blog was kind of falling apart. And that if I wanted to continue blogging- which I desperately did- I need to get my shit life together. So, I began doing my research and figuring out how I can continue blogging. While keeping my university stuff in order. I made up my mind that 2018 would be different. I was going to be as productive as possible. And I was going to make sure I blog much more regularly.

Conclusion

I’m going to end this post here. It went on way longer than I expected but 2017 was a major year for me. So much happened. So much changed. In a way this was the year I really made the decision to blog seriously. And try to turn this hobby in at least a part-time thing. This is also the year I really found myself and consequently I found out exactly what I want this blog to be too.

  1. I’m glad that you didn’t give up, Pooja. Your journey is an inspiration to many of us 💗

    1. Thank you so much Shweta!

  2. Your blogging journey seems quite interesting. I am inspired by your struggle with anxiety and depression as I have been sailing in the same boat since two years. I agree with your viewpoint that mental troubles do not heal completely, we learn to deal with them more effectively. I hope you’ll continue to rock even more in the future.
    More power to you, girl!

    1. Thank you so much! And I wish you the best on your journey!

  3. I’m in the “blogging falling apart” phase. Hopefully I get back to it. Lol
    Enjoying reading your story!

    1. Yeah that phase happens to most bloggers but hopefully you’ll find your blogging rhythm!

  4. Good job, Pooja, I’m impressed! I discovered blogging in 2015, and absolutely loved it. My first blog was called My Writing Journey, and chronicled my ups and downs being a writer. I had a lot of interests and things I wanted to blog about, so I created another blog about my daughter with spina bifida. Then another one with book and movie reviews…I kind of spread myself thin. I tried to make regular posts on all of them, but as a working Mom, it was hard to make time. I never got the kind of traffic I would have liked, for a lot of reasons–I wasn’t posting as regularly as I should have, I wasn’t very good a social media (I’m in my forties, and it doesn’t come naturally to me), and just a lack of understanding about how it all works. I took some time off for other writing, and kind of let the blogs go, but I missed it so much. I rediscovered my love and passion for Star Wars, and now I’m blogging about that, and love it! Still working on getting more traffic, and trying to learn how to do it. I’ve been reading your advice, and trying to put it into practice. Thanks so much for your posts, you’re an inspiration!

    1. Thank you so much! I’m so glad you found blogging again and are writing about something you love. And honestly Star Wars is amazing so I totally get it. So glad you found the advice posts helpful!

  5. I was blogging years ago and life got too hectic that I deleted everything. I just started again a few days ago. I feel you In the ups and downs.

    1. So glad you started blogging again and best of luck with it!

  6. Nice Post 👏

    1. Thank you!

  7. Pooja your blogging journey is interesting and inspiring at the same time.

  9. Truly writing is something that makes me keep going too. Thanks for the inspiration. I hope I will find my way too just like you did. Keep going on :).

    1. Thank you so much and I’m sure you will!

  10. I knew it would get better! 🙂 2017 was the year you definitely decided blogging was part of your life and it was such a big step I admire it. <3

    1. Thank you so much and yes 2017 was such a vital year for me in so many ways!

  11. Loved reading it, 👍 great going dear.

    1. Thank you so much!

  12. It’s inspiring, good work, am glad u still found your way back when u think your blog was falling apart. Truly schooling and blogging can be so stressful

    1. Thank you! Yes it’s so hard to juggle everything.

      1. U are welcome

  13. I am following your blog for a few months. They are really inspiring. I have seen that your blog is on more than one topic. Whereas people suggest to follow particular niche.
I would like to ask, is it necessary to follow particular niche? or we can write about multiple niche on same blog website.

    1. I personally feel that as long as you are a good writer you don’t need to limit yourself to one niche. That being said I think single niche blogs do tend to be more encouraged as it’s believed that it’s easier to make an income on a single niche blog.

      1. Ok. Thank you

  14. This is really inspiring!

    1. Thank you!

  15. 6 years is a long time! It must be part of your DNA by now 😊

    1. Haha sometimes I feel like it is!!

  16. Well done for getting your blog back up and running just the way you wanted Pooja, despite all the obstacles. The only obstacles I face are due to both my physical and mental illness – I just never know which one, both or when one of them is going to ‘knock me out’. And I don’t have the energy to do multiple posts for scheduling. Like this week, I haven’t posted since Monday. Any ideas?

    1. Thank you! I’m sorry to hear that. Perhaps you can find you write slightly shorter posts so they don’t take up too much energy?

      1. Ah, good thinking Pooja 🙂

  17. Great post I’m really loving your blogging journey! Wow you’ve achieved so much that’s so incredible! I’m really glad and happy for you that you got your black back up even with all the challenges. This is so inspiring for me. I’ve also faced some obstacles (like time management with work/studies) but also I got very little support from my friend groups so that made motivation quite hard. I know that it’s probably going to get harder once I start university but with inspiring people like you to look up to, I’m pretty sure that I’ll be able to manage 🙂

    1. Thank you so much! Yeah I know it’s definitely difficult to manage your time and to find time to blog when you’re studying and working but it’s definitely possible to find a routine that works for you- it may take a while just keep going and don’t give up!

      1. Thank you – I’m definitely going to try find a way to keep it all going xxx

  18. I Nominated you! Your mission should you choose to accept… The Mystery Blogger award. Check out my blogpost https://bthought1.wordpress.com/2020/07/18/nomination-mystery-blogger-award/

    1. Thank you so much I truly appreciate it!

  19. So inspiring , I think today multiple niche blogs have good days .

    1. Thank you and yes I agree!

  20. So happy you didn’t give up! I know exactly how the blogging world can be so fully of the unexpected. Glad to see you are pressing on! We NEED you ❤️

    1. Thank you so much and I am always so glad I didn’t give up on blogging as well!

  21. Time management can be one of our largest obstacles. I’m glad you kept writing. I enjoy reading and learning from your blog. Thank you for sharing. Stay safe.

    1. Yeah I think time management was the biggest problem I was having and I’m sure I’ll still have it in the future but I’ve learnt over the years that it’s all about keeping a balance. Thanks and stay safe too!

  22. Nice to get a peak behind the curtain. I’m kind of in awe of how I easy you make blogging seem.

    1. Thank you! Haha trust me it is far from easy- if anything it’s way harder than I ever expected!

      1. I believe you.

  23. You are inspiring and such a supportive person always sharing and giving help to others. Your honesty into your mental health struggles and road to healing are helpful for everyone to hear since so many struggle with the same thing. Thank you!

    1. Thank you so much! I promised myself that I would use this blog to help people especially those suffering from mental health problems and I’m glad to see that I have been able to do so.

      1. You are so welcome! It is one of the most important issues of all times! You are doing it and making a difference!

  24. I get what you mean about being a creature of habit. I definitely am too. I get anxious when I change up my schedule because I’m never sure I’ll stick to it! Definitely lose interest in things very quickly too. So weird, I finished my BA in History last summer! What are you specialising in? I like Medieval Ecclesiatical History – reading about the church and hermits etc. So fun!

    1. OMG another history major woohoo! I am more into modern history and in particular I’m looking into the Sixties. I also found the history of music to be very interesting. Medieval Ecclesiastical History sounds so interesting- I took a class on the Reformation and it was quite interesting.

      1. I really loved studying America in the 60s in second year. Some very interesting themes about happiness through commercial expense. Medieval stuff is definitely my jam though! 😀

        1. Yeah Medieval stuff is definitely super interesting! I enjoyed the classes I took on that.

  25. it’s helpful to others to know that it wasn’t a smooth road to get to where you are now; you’ve had your ups and downs along the way…

    1. Thanks and yes I’ve definitely had my ups and downs and considered ditching blogging completely multiple times.

      1. we are all glad you did not!

  26. This was a great post to read. As someone who has recently (like, three weeks ago) begun blogging, it’s encouraging to read about someone else’s journey, and someone else’s ups and downs. The part about your anxiety and depression especially resonated with me. It’s good to hear that you’re feeling better. I’m now going to go and read Part 1 and 2, which I should have done first, but of course I didn’t.

    1. Thank you so much! I always try to talk about my mental health because I know a lot of people suffer from similar things so I’m glad that resonated with you. I wish you all the best on your blogging journey and I really hope you enjoy the other parts!

  27. Thank you for sharing your journey, so happy that despite the up and downs you kept writing 🙂

    1. Thank you so much! I’m very glad I kept writing too!

  28. An interesting story and nothing at all like mine. I started blogging to publicise my books, express my views on politics, history, education, culture and religion, share my photos and art, write on all manner of subjects and talk about my travels with a bit of humour thrown in.
I was not focussed on growing the blog at all and because I am dealing with some serious stuff that annoys people (politics and religion) I knew many people would be put off. However, it’s a journey!

    1. Well as long as you are doing what you set out to do I think that’s a win whether people choose to follow your blog or not. Blogging is all about expressing yourself.

  29. Hey, since you often like my posts, I want to ask you if you actually read them and how much you understand of them?

    1. Hi, yes I do read them and I believe the last post I liked was one about K-pop and your spiritual awakening/journey and how you saw signs in the lyrics and dance routine which pointed towards your own journey and lifestyle/life. I thought it was an interesting read because I sometimes I listen to music when I am going through something or having a spiritual awakening and it feels like the universe is talking to me through the music.

      1. Oh that’s wonderful! Well, the post you liked just now was a lyric video, there was no dance routine hahaha. True, music can do wonders!

        1. Lol my bad- I just read like 10 posts in a row so my brain is pretty fried right now! Yes music is so great and I always feel like it transmits the energy of the musician/musicians to the listener. Out of curiosity what got you into Kpop? I got super into it after I started watching Kdramas a few years ago.

          1. Yeah, I guess that’s still better than those who don’t read the posts at all and just like them XD I hate that XD. I got into it after meeting some Korean people online 10 years ago, one of them recommended a song to me and I got hooked XD. I also saw that you learn German? Is that still going on? Do you also learn Korean then?

            1. I actually stopped learning German for a bit but then started again after during lockdown because I had a lot more free time and it’s something that I have wanted to do for a long time now. I really do want to learn Korean but I feel like I’m going to need more free time to do it since it’s so different from English so I was thinking about learning it after I’m done with university. How about you do you know Korean?

              1. Why German though? Do you want to go there? I actually think it’s harder than Korean and I’m a native speaker 😂 Yes, I’m fluent in Korean!

                1. Yeah I want to go to Germany someday- maybe to do my Masters so I feel like it would help to know the local language. Omg I actually find it super easy because it’s so similar to English- the only problem I have is the grammar. Ooh so lucky- Korean is such a beautiful language. I don’t understand a lot of it without subtitles but it just sounds so beautiful.

                  1. Yes, the grammar with all the cases and changing endings – Korean doesn’t have that 😂👍
I know, right? I think so too!

                    1. Ooh that’s lucky- I’ll definitely be checking out Korean next year!

                    2. Good luck with that! 👍 If you need help, you can shoot me a message anytime! 😀

                    3. Thanks so much and feel free to HMU if you ever decide to learn German- I don’t know much but I know the basics lol!

                    4. Huh? I’m a German native speaker as I told you before 😂👍

                    5. Oh I’m sorry my bad!! Thanks again!

                    6. Don’t worry about it 😂👍

  30. It’s interesting and inspiring ❤️

    1. Thank you so much!

  31. I’m so happy you found a way! We get these obstacles thrown at us but we always find a way to get around them. Also the Fairmount was absolutely beautiful!!!
also… your nails looked bomb on that trip!

    1. Thank you so much! Lol back in the day when I had time to spend doing my nails haha!

      1. Omg tell me about it!!!

  32. Six years of blogging?! That’s amazing! Happy six year Blogiversary!!🥰

    1. Thank you so much!!

  33. Hi Pooja I have been inspired by your blogging journey and this was the first article I read that talked about your anxiety. i have read some of your blogs on anxiety and they are really well written and ones I can relate to! I also struggled with anxiety during my time at University which is something i find hard to talk about. However.that is what inspired me to write blogs about mental health topics that arent always talked about in society.
I also plan to write a blog about my experiences with anxiety which i hope to publish soon so have a read when the blog is complete!
I wish you.all the best and I hope you prioritize.your mental health, thats so important 🙂

    1. Thank you so much! I am so glad that my posts about anxiety helped you open up about your struggles as well and I am so glad that you decided to share your journey too. The more we talk about our experiences the more we can help others.

  34. Yesss, I am in the spot will I fell off just for a short while but hoping I’ll be back soon!

    1. Best of luck with that!!

  35. Two good pieces if advice you give often stuck out to me from this post:
    1. Having a schedule, even a loose one, and sticking to it (within reason if course, sometimes life does happen) helps readers and ourselves as the writer focus attention and energy into better writing.
    2. Be active on your own blog. Consistency is key. You say this over and over again, and they really are words of truth.
‘Tis very cool to see more of your journey as you write about it. 🙂

    1. Thank you! Yes both of those really are crucial! People ask me all the time how I grew my blog and in the end it always comes down to being active and being consistent.

  36. This is amazing!

    1. Thank you!

  37. Thank you for sharing, really appreciate all the great advice. Hope I keep at it but it’s nice to know there are definitely seasons to progression.

    1. Thank you so much and yes there definitely are!!

  38. What an interesting and heartfelt blogging journey. I especially liked the use of tags section and engaging with other blogs the most. Your perseverance is stellar. Keep writing and wish you many more lovely experiences to blog about

    1. Thank you so much! That really means a lot to me!

  40. I love reading your blog posts! It’s funny cuz you think you aren’t a celebrity but if I see you in my notifications liking my stuff I get all “OMG a celeb noticed me”

    1. Haha thank you so much!!

  41. I completely agree that when you don’t remain active on your blog, it starts affecting your blog.

    1. Yeah remaining active is definitely essential if you want to grow your blog.

  42. […] would recommend reading part 1, part 2, part 3 and part 4 of my blogging journey before reading this one because you may feel a bit lost without […]

  43. The orange notification dot is what I’m living for these days. It makes me very happy and excited to see how people are reacting to my posts. You have persevered to keep your blog alive through thick and thin. You deserve all the success in this universe and more.

    1. Thank you so much and yes that orange dot can be a lifesaver sometimes!

  44. Yet another great post!
One question? Did you find it hard at first replying comments or commenting on other people’s blogs? I think that’s one problem I’m currently facing.
Whenever I get a notification, my heart rate goes up, I start overthinking about what to say or what not to and hope I don’t offend the person or say something stupid.
Before the pandemic, I was also finding it hard to be consistent in blogging and doing school work. The course I study is very demanding and since I’d more likely to spend my money on school stuff, I hardly had enough to buy data to come online and blog or interact with other bloggers. I don’t know if I’d be able to tackle this problem when school starts again but I’d love to try. I think these are the only obstacles and problems I have minus the occasional “I don’t know what to write” moments. Seeing that you found a way around yours inspires me to find a way around mine too.
You should be better at the tags stuff by now. I don’t fully get it but I do try to incorporate it in most of my posts. At the moment, blogging is just a hobby for me but I’d like to get serious with it as well. It’s been barely a month since my consistently but I feel like I’ve learned so much in so little time and I know I still have a lot to learn. I’m just trying to take it slow and get a hang of it.

    1. Yes, I had very similar problems with commenting. I was constantly overthinking my replies or what to comment on other peoples posts. However, over time I realised that I am just a chronic over thinker and that most people don’t put as much thought into your comment as you yourself do. I mean not saying that no one will ever be offended by something you say. But the thing is if someone wants to be a troll/hate on your they will find a way to do so no matter how carefully you plan your comments. If you do end up offending someone just block them/delete their comment and try to put it behind you.
Balancing school and blogging is definitely a challenge and it took me a while to get the balance write. I would recommend that when your school starts and you get your school schedule make a blogging schedule as well and plan out exact times to blog. That has helped me a lot with staying consistent.
Yeah I had realised how to use tags I just was using too many of them which I didn’t realise was a problem. You really do learn a lot from blogging consistently. I’m glad you’re picking up stuff already.

      1. Oh. People can be mean sometimes, thank you for the lovely words. I’ll definitely be deleting comments that I find hateful.
I’d be sure to do so when school starts again, if I encounter any problems, would it be alright to hit you up?
        Can’t wait to get better😊

        1. Yes absolutely feel free to reach out on my blog or privately through DM’s or email!
