Advice For New Blogger Continued
A while ago I wrote a post with advice for new bloggers and that post was strictly to help them stay careful, safe and to better understand blogging. You can read that post by clicking here.
I think when it comes to blogging there are some things you can only pick up on once you have been blogging for a while and since I have been picking up on some stuff over the years I like sharing it with everyone- especially newer bloggers.
A lot of times people seem to have this notion that doing stuff on the internet is easier than traditional work or that it’s a way to get rich quick. Although this is the case for very few people, the majority of people take a lot longer and have to work incredibly hard to grow their platform and actually do this full time.
Today, I decided to share some do’s and don’t’s for new bloggers because as I mentioned there are some things that you do not really pick up until you have been blogging for a while. These are some things that will help you grow your blog, increase your following and traffic and also in general just make your whole blogging experience better- at least I hope it will!
I think if you pick up one thing from this post let it be this- be active as much as you possibly can. Let me explain it a little better. There are two ways you can and in my opinion should be active on WordPress if you are trying to grow your blog.
The first way you need to be active is on your own blog. Make sure you are posting on a regular and scheduled basis. By regular and scheduled I don’t mean you have to post everyday although daily posting does have it’s benefits. What I mean is post as often as you can- maybe everyday, maybe every other day, maybe once a week or even once a month- just make sure you post it at the same time every day/week/month.
A lot of your followers probably follow multiple people and let’s be honest if you post at random times they are likely not going to see all your posts and most people will not go out of their way to see if you have posted something new recently. Therefore, posting at the same time or at least having some kind of schedule for each post makes a huge difference- it does not get you random followers/readers but rather loyal followers/readers. To find out how to schedule your post for maximum followers and traffic click here.
The next way to stay active is to be active on other blogs. I say this on almost every blogging advice post I make but blogging is a two way street and WordPress is a community that thrives on the support of one another. If you do not support other blogs you can not expect them to support you in the long run. I’m not saying comment on every single post ever created but notice who comments on your blog posts regularly and comment on theirs as well. Like the posts of other people. Most importantly, like and comment on posts that don’t already follow you as well- try to visit at least 5-20 new blogs a day depending on how much time you have.
I sort of can’t believe I need to specifically mention this but to be honest I have gotten so much hate this year that I just wanted to talk about this a little. Just to put it in a short and simple way- if you don’t have anything nice to say than don’t say anything. There are thousands of blogs out there so if you come across one that you don’t like/agree with than simply don’t like the post, don’t follow the blog and if you are so offended by the content block them.
Leaving hate effects people a lot more than some people realise and just going by my personal experience I just want to say you never know what is going on with the person in real life, how they are feeling, whether they suffer from certain mental health problems etc and your comment may truly effect them and their well being.
There is nothing wrong with leaving feedback- just remember to do it in a positive way without personally attacking the person. I would also recommend not doing it in the comments section as this can feel like an attack- instead reach out personally via email or social media. And please remember to be kind to one another.
Research Research RESEARCH
One thing I have picked up as a history major is to always do your research because research is the only way to truly learn. There is so much work that goes into creating a blog and so much more work that goes into actually running it.
One of the things I regret most when it comes to blogging is not doing enough research early on because now I have to keep going back and changing things which is extremely time consuming and frustrating. I also did not take advantage of the features that WordPress offers and I so wish I had.
But don’t be like me- do your research, figure out how to use everything, how to make your posts SEO friendly etc and most importantly make sure you have a plan for what you want your blog to become in two years time so that you’re not just putting out random posts for the sake of it but rather are working towards a goal. If you are just blogging to put out random posts than definitely go for it but if you want your blog to have a direction you may want to think ahead.
Make The Most Of Everything
Seriously, make the most of EVERYTHING. WordPress offers so many amazing features even on the free plan and you should definitely take advantage of everything it offers. This is where the research part comes in again- know exactly what you are being offered so that you can take advantage of it and use it to grow your blog. If you use your features correctly your blog will grow so much faster.
Another things I would recommend making the most of is the WP community. We are so lucky to have a much more positive, interactive and genuine community compared to a lot of platforms and don’t let that go to waste. Interact with others, get to know fellow bloggers, talk to new people and make the most of your blogging experience.
Take Your Time
Blogging is not a race or a make money quick scheme. I know it sounds a little corny but when it comes to blogging it’s more about the journey than the final destination. It takes time to grow your blog, to get to where you want to be when it comes to your followers and traffic count. It’s a lot of hard work and it takes a lot of patience, dedication, planning and enthusiasm however at least in my opinion it is so worth the hard work.
I think a lot of people kind of think when they start out that they are going to grow immediately without having to put too much work into it. That they will instantly get at least a few hundred views and followers. I myself am guilty of believing my blog would grow faster than it did. But I quickly learnt that it does not work like that. You need to put out quality content, be active and work really hard.
Leave Spam Comments
The reason I mentioned this first is because it seems like over the last few months there has been a large rise in the amount of spam comments that bloggers are leaving. I don’t know if it is just my blog but I do not remember getting these many spam like comments on my posts before.
There are a number of spam comments. Firstly, there the obvious spam that is not from another blogger but just left by random people on the internet. Immediately delete these and do not click on the links they leave as some of them are viruses.
The next kind of spam is something that annoys me the most. The blogger will leave a comment while completely ignoring your post and will pretty much advertise their blog on your comments section. Unfortunately, I can’t find one of the screenshots I had taken but this person pretty much ignored my post and commented something along the lines of “Hi, I have a blog about blah blah blah please go check it out” and left a link to their blog.
Another things people will do is leave a very generic “Nice post. Go check out my blog.”, “Great post. Go follow, like and comment on my blog.” or something very similar to those two. The last thing I wanted to mention is probably the most shady spam comment. They basically leave a comment and sign their name (which there is nothing wrong with- the next part is the problem) and in this name they leave a do-follow or no-follow link. People basically use your posts to get free backlinks when if done in an ethical way they would be paying you between $5-$100.
My point is, don’t leave spam comments. One, because people are not stupid and know exactly what you’re doing- they may be polite to you but they know. Two, it’s just a mean thing to do because everyone I know puts a lot of work into their posts and to completely disregard their posts and instead try to get backlinks for your blog is just an awful thing to do. Three, it’s annoying and people will block you which means you will probably be losing more traffic and followers than you are getting. Four, leaving a genuine comment goes a long way. Instead of wasting time with spam comments why not just leave a genuine comment because most people are likely to respond and go over to your blog if they enjoyed talking to you.
Unfortunately, there are bullies everywhere and although I would argue that the majority of the people on WordPress are friendly and lovely people in general there are still some that are not. I remember reading a post a while ago where someone actually told the blogger that they were “selfish” for not supporting someones blog that supported their blog.
Yes, WordPress is a two way street but that does not mean that people have to support other people no matter what. Most of us have lives outside of WP and have things to do other than blogging and it’s just not possible to read every single post of every single person who likes and comments on your blog.
The lesson here is that don’t emotionally blackmail people or bully people into supporting your blog. If they want to support it they will and if they don’t want to they have every right not to. Also don’t support other people hoping for something in return- support others because you genuinely like their content.
Stop Being Passionate
It’s hard to come up with new ideas for posts all the time and writers block is quite common. A lot of people feel exhausted after a few weeks of regular blogging because like I said it can be very hard work. If you feel like you are running out of ideas for blogging than take a break. Don’t force it. Write when you are truly passionate and write about what you love because it honestly makes a huge difference and your readers will be able to tell the difference.
I wanted to end this post by saying DON’T GIVE UP! It takes time so be passionate and keep working hard. I know at times you will feel like what’s the point maybe I should just stop blogging but don’t. It’s so important to stay passionate because over time your blog will grow and eventually you will reach your goals!
I want to apologise for the longer post- I actually got rid of a bunch of stuff while editing but it still ended up being a bit longer than usual but I just had a lot to say and I didn’t want to write a two part post of Do’s and Don’t’s separately.
What is one piece of advice you would give to new bloggers? Have you ever received spam comments and if you have how do you deal with them? Have you noticed an increase in spam like comments? Are you a new blogger or an older blogger? What is one thing you would recommend that bloggers never do? Have you ever received hate comments and if so how did you deal with them?

great advice; my favorite is “Be Nice”…
Yup it’s definitely important to be nice to one another!
Useful and helpful posts for new bloggers. Impactful information
Thank you so much!
My Pleasure 💕
I haven’t been able to come up with anything solid the past few days and I’ve been beating myself up about it, seeing the Don’t Stop Being Passionate has calmed me down a little. Best I write something that I’m into than write something just because. Thanks for sharing.
I cannot believe you got hate for your awards post and I’m so glad you still do them, despite it. It’s a great way to get to know more about you and your blog, I hate unnecessary opinions. Ah, so sorry you had to go through that.
I am so glad that part made you feel better. I totally agree that you would rather write something you want to write rather than forcing yourself for the sake of putting out content.
Yeah I found it to be such a weird thing to hate on someone about and it kind of really caught me off guard. I agree that it’s a great way to interact and get to know the blogger but this person refused to accept that there could be more to awards than just networking. Either way I have learnt from the incident that hate has more to do with them then me and now I just ignore/delete hate comments.
Really helpful for people like me… Thanks, thumbs up
Thank you so glad you found it helpful!
Great advice, Pooja. Worthy of note!. ❤
Thank you so much!
Great post, Pooja, insightful and informative. I’ve never had too much spam, just the usual “Love your blog. Check mine out.” Aarrgghhh.
I’d advise new bloggers to engage with the blogging community as, like you said, it’s a two-way street. And I’d say “never steal other bloggers work and post it as your own.” If you want to reblog a post that you enjoyed, at least give credit to the original writer.
Thank you so much! I get so much spam it becomes a nightmare sometimes.
I absolutely agree and yes never steal work! I have had people steal entire posts, post ideas or parts of posts and it’s just so horrible. Definitely be original or like you said reblog or give the writer credit.
I guess that comes with such a successful blog and 18,000 followers 😉
I’ve had a whole post pinched together with parts – like you. And yes, it is horrible!
Look after yourself my lovely x
Thank you and take care of yourself too!
Hey Pooja, have you heard anything of Debby lately? I haven’t heard from her for almost a month now, after I paid a large sum of money via paypal. I have been really worried and have written to her many times but got no response. Now I’m getting annoyed 🙁
Wow that’s horrible I am so sorry to hear that. When was the last time she contacted you? I had finished working with her some time ago and have not talked to her for the last few weeks. Please let me know if you still don’t hear from her and I will be happy to email her as well and try to find out what’s going on.
Hi Pooja, sorry to bother you, it’s just I know she’d worked with you too. After I paid her up front on 21st July, I got an email from her telling me what she’ll be doing on 5th August. As I said, I’m concerned that I’ve not had a response to any of my emails? Something must be wrong? x
It’s not a bother at all. I would be concerned as well. I checked her blog and it seems she has been inactive since 22nd July. Would you like me to email her and see if she responds? I would be more than happy to do so.
Thank you Pooja, yes, please do, I really appreciate it. It’s not like her 🙁
Yeah it’s very odd of her not to reply. I’ll email her and let you know if she responds.
Thank you. I hope first that she’s okay. Then, that she’ll continue with what I’ve paid quite a lot of money for. I appreciate this Pooja. ❤️
I hope so too because it’s very odd that she didn’t reply- she usually replies quite fast. I truly hope you can get the work done for your blog too. You’re totally welcome I’m happy to help!
Awesome post girl! 💯💯💯💯💯
Thank you so much!!
Your’e welcome 😄😄😄
Thanks for this post and your others on posting for Newbies😃
No problems with long posts if they are informative. I would rather read a long post that l learn something from than many un-informative ones
Thank you and I am so glad you found it informative!
Really very informative, thank u 😊
Thank you- I’m glad you found it informative!
Hi here can I share your post
Yes you absolutely can!
I loved this post- such great advice. I’m basically taking all the free blogging advice I can find haha!
Thank you- free advice is the best lol!
Thanks again for the encouragement. I feel like I still enjoy writing my blog and do a very thorough job researching my posts. What I’m doing terribly at is visiting other blogs and online communities with similar themes. Every week I say I’ve got to find time for that, but it just falls to the back of the todo pile. I appreciate the solid metrics you’ve recommended, 5 to 20 blogs per day, even though it seems like an impossible feat for me right now.
Thank you! Yes it does definitely get difficult but it is also the fastest way to grow your blog. Don’t pressure yourself too much and visit as many blogs as you can!
This was such a great post! I am not sure why some people think its okay to be internet bullies but thats on them. I loved how you ended it as well. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much! Yeah the hate definitely says a lot about who they are as people. Glad you enjoyed the post!
I can’t imagine getting online and just talking down on someone.
I know it ridiculous. If you feel the need to tear other people down you really need to reevaluate your life.
This was an awesome post. I just started my blog yesterday and I will be referring back to this often. Thank you so much!
I’m so glad you found it helpful and best of luck with your blog!
Its important to take breaks!! When i was tired of blogging. I was so close to quitting..luckily i felt like i got hyped again and know now to take breaks so i dont stop loving blogging. Its not something to force 😁 actually maybe nothing is meant to be forced 🤗
Yes breaks are extremely important otherwise like you said you will end up hating it and quitting!
These are great advice, Pooja that are quite helpful to all bloggers. I particularly like your advice about internet bullies and trolls. They are quite common and they seem to appear when your blog begins to grow. Keep up the great work that you are doing.
Thank you so much! Yes, trolls and bullies are unfortunately a part of the internet experience.
Thanks for these tips! I have been blogging for quiet sometime but haven’t really engaged myself into the community. I wanted to grow my followers but don’t know why. I guess this time, I will do mt best to be more active and make my blog more alive so I can inspire more people to visit my site as well. 🙂
Yes, being active definitely helps and engaging with other bloggers is probably the best way to increase your following!
Thanks for the blogging advice. Following you as been the best thing for me since I started blogging as your posts as been sincerely helpful. I wasn’t able to post on my blog as scheduled recently because I had an exam(but your advice on taking a break when you need to, gave me a relief). Your advice are really helpful.
Thank you! I am so glad you have been finding my advice helpful. Taking a break really does help and you end up coming back more prepared and enthusiastic about blogging.
Thank you for the great advice! I have been struggling a bit in the past few months, primarily because of time constraints, but you inspire me to keep writing. You are appreciated.
Thank you so much and I’m sorry you’ve been struggling with that but hopefully you will find a schedule that works best for you.
Blogging advice from Pooja comment:
Don’t give up us a great piece of advice. When we humans start out at anything we can be disappointed when there isn’t immediately visible progress. Blogging is about the journey, the wonderful people we meet along the way, and the great opportunities to learn about so many different things blogging provides!
My one piece of advice when starting out (which I still consider myself to be in the phase of!) is to read comments and think deeply about them. If someone has taken the time to read and leave a legitimate comment I feel really chuffed and want to give that comment a bit of time to sink in. We don’t necessarily have to respond to every one – and as you say we won’t have the time to! – but we can read them.
Thank you for sharing more of your your learnings. 😊
Thank you and I totally agree blogging is all about the journey and meeting amazing people, getting your writing out there etc.
That’s so true- comments are crucial and it’s such an honour when someone chooses to comment on your post so you definitely should take the time to respond or at least digest what they have said.
Still trying to figure out how WP works so thank you that’s so helpful 🙂
Glad to hear that!
This is really helpful! Thank you!
So glad you found it helpful!
I really enjoyed your content, and wondered if I could connect with you to learn more about blogging? If that is possible, that is and available.
Yeah definitely feel free to reach out!
Great Advice and I found it very helpful.
Keep Going 🙂
Thank you so much!
You are welcome 😊
A very well thought about article. I appreciate the insights that you passed onto your readers. Best of Luck Always!
Thank you so much!
Thanks for all the advice! It’s inspiring to read these articles, they make me want to start writing more straight away 🙂
I did get a bit confused when the headers started to say ‘Give up’ ‘n such, but that’s just my sloppy reading…
Anyway, definitely gonna read some more of your stuff, keep up the good work!
Thank you and glad you enjoyed the post!
Thank you so much for this wonderful post. It is helpful for me as a new blogger.
I’m so glad you found it helpful!
I am really new to Blogging. So Thank you so much. It was really helpful! ❤
Great post. Go like and follow my blog! Just kidding! These are all great reminders. I am a “born again” blogger…all refreshed and renewed and with zippy followers. But that’s ok, I do remember it being a process and for me, at this point in my life, it’s ALL about the process and the creativity in putting together something that I love. If it reaches someone else, great. Well, I mean…that’s kind of the point to blogging so I don’t want to minimize how much effort it takes (to reach peopole_ because it does take…a lot. But, well…I just hope that in the process of all the process, that everyone remembers to enjoy the time spent writing, sharing, etc. Many thanks for all your wonderful posts. I just found your site today but I’m sure I’ll be back!
Good advice 👍
Thank you so much for providing such types of blogs as it helped me a lot because I am new to the blogging field and I hope you will keep providing such content later.
I really like your article series on the Do’s and Don’ts of Blogging (especially when starting). I appreciate hearing suggestions from someone who has been blogging for some time. Thanks, again! -Kyra 🌸
You have some great advice, thank you!
Thank you so much!
