Things I’ve Learnt From Blogging

Things I’ve Learnt From Blogging

I think blogging is such a great outlet for so many people and blogging sort of gives you a platform which is a blank slate and you get to make your blog into whatever you want. It also provides you with one of the best communities I have seen on the Internet. Unlike other platforms, WordPress/blogging allows you to truly express yourself and engage with people that you can have genuine conversations with in a positive manner. So, I wanted to share some things I’ve learnt from blogging. Here are five things I’ve learnt from blogging:

You Can Find Friends Everywhere

With blogging you are not limited to people in just your city/state.country. One of the best parts about blogging is that you get to connect with people all over the world and it doesn’t limit you to connecting with people from just one area. What that helped me learn was that no matter where you go you will always find someone you can connect and engage with. You just need to be open and step out of your comfort zone a little bit.

What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger

Blogging is a lot more difficult than people think it is. People always assume that things that people do on the Internet are for some reason easier than things that are done in real life but that is really not true. Firstly, just getting the hang of blogging and how it works takes a lot of effort for anyone who isn’t really tech savvy and finding something to write about every day/week/month can be very difficult as well. Growing your audience is another difficulty that you face especially at the beginning. And just like with everything on the Internet you of course are going to run into some hater as well. But what blogging taught me that really works as a lesson about blogging and about life too is that what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.

Working hard to learn about blogging and to come up with things to write about helps you grow, better your writing, sharpen your skills and more. And receiving hate makes you realise just how unimportant other people’s opinions are. It teaches you to keep doing you without caring about pleasing others.

Numbers Don’t Matter

Another thing that blogging and spending years growing my blog has taught me is that numbers really don’t matter as much as people often seem to think they do. If you want to become an influencer/make money blogging then yes numbers do matter to an extent. However, for me personally I’ve realised that as honoured as I am to have the followers I do have what I cherish most are the comments and interactions I have with other bloggers.

You Know Nothing

This is a lesson I learnt from going through all of your amazing blogs over the last few years. Much like Jon Snow, I really know nothing. After going through other blogs I have learnt so many things about so many topics. I have learnt about everything from music to history to astronomy to sociology to lessons about life. When I say about everything I mean everything. It was an awesome wake up call for the little teenage know-it-all I used to be and I love that I was able to learn so much more than I ever imagined possible.

Life Is A Two Way Street

If there is one thing I really picked up on with blogging it’s that life is a two way street. You get back what you put out there. No one is going to care about your existence and be there for you if you don’t care about them. Most things are a two way street. If you want something from someone you need to be out there getting something for them too.

It Isn’t Always Rainbows and Butterflies

Remember the time when you’re so excited to hit that keyboard with all your thoughts? Yeah, I miss that too. And don’t get me wrong, I am ALWAYS excited–as a very clingy and happy anxious person– to connect with my blogger friends, with Pooja, and read other blogs that I like and hit those keys too. But sometimes, it just doesn’t work. Whether you’re feeling down, having a writer’s block, sometimes it takes quite an effort to continue blogging. And I really admire those people who managed to stay in this platform for so many years. This isn’t always rainbows and butterflies, and you know what? That’s okay.

Blogging isn’t just writing something that comes out of your mind naturally anyway. Sometimes, you need to get inspired. You need to stay motivated. And for other people, that’s hard to maintain. People get tired, get busy, but if a few years from now, you (you who’s reading this) and I are still here teaching each other with the things we write about, I’d say we both did well and we deserve it.

Other People May Not Support You

Who here has very supportive family and friends because of their blog? That’s great! You’re lucky that you have those people who understand your passion, but an unpopular opinion about blogging is that people tend to think that blogging isn’t anything serious. Sometimes your friends and families won’t support you because they think that what you’re doing is just a hobby, something to kill your time.

I have some family members who do that too. But heck, do they stop us from writing? If they think that what we’re doing is just tattletale, then they’re missing their chance to learn something from us. You have to remember this, whatever you write about, I’m sure there’s always something that people learn from it. So keep writing!

Our Words Are Powerful

I’ve read so many blogs on WordPress since I started blogging and everyday I still get astounded by how people write and what they write about. It’s true, blogging helps you express your thoughts, like you’ve never told anyone else before. Here, we see how people really think and share their thoughts to their readers. I’m not much of a talkative person, just when I’m around friends, but even my friends haven’t really known how my thoughts go around. This is what we all contribute to WordPress. We each have power over our words and we share them to others.

No One Really Reads Content But Blogging Taught Me To Do So

I remember talking to my sister asking why she doesn’t even click on my blog to read some of my posts and she says, “I’m not much of a reader”. And I totally get it. Some people love to read, and others don’t. I understand that nowadays, people really don’t read much content. They browse through Facebook for pretty pictures, for memes, but when they see some long posts, they scroll right away. And yes, it’s because sometimes, well, it’s just too long! But blogging made me realize that an effort to take time reading gives you something worth knowing.

Blogging didn’t just teach me to improve my writing. It also taught me to read and acknowledge what other people have to say. You have seen maybe dozens of posts about mental health and how to manage it but when you see a post about it again, you click it anyway! Because you know that there might be something you still haven’t known about mental health. And you look forward to learning from it.

If You Love What You’re Doing It Makes You Happy

This is probably the most valuable thing I’ve learnt from blogging. It’s true that if you really love what you’re doing, you wouldn’t be stressed about it, you wouldn’t wake up and think, “Aww, man I’m going to blog again!”. Nope. Honestly,  I love what I’m doing. I even took around 50 classes just so I can share a lot about what I write about. Would you believe that I was all excited for it too? I can’t even go to school without saying, “Aww, man. It’s Monday again!” Half kidding, I love school too, but do you get what I’m saying?

If you love what you’re doing, no one can stop you from doing it. This is what passion feels like. Even if you get tired, you take a break. You’ll just end up missing it. And when you come back, it feels good. Blogging made me feel good. This is just one of the few things I can safely say I’m really passionate about. And I hope you feel the same way too.

Conclusion

So, these are the things I learnt from blogging. Let me know some things you learnt from blogging in the comments section because I would love to hear from you. Or simply stop by and say hi!

    1. Thank you! Yes I absolutely agree!

  2. I love this so much! It’s so true that you learn a lot from blogging and reading blogs. It’s something you just don’t get with social media. It’s like bloggers know that with great power comes great responsibility

    1. Yes I love that so much about WordPress- you get to connect with others on a whole different level and posts are actually meaningful!

      1. This blog is so true!! It gives us so much to think of. We learn a lot, yes and we do connect with many people. It’s great!

  3. Pooja, this is a great post. I agree all the way…I never thought of blogging almost 3 years back…coz I had no idea how powerful blogging can be….coz I didn’t know what I wanted to write about…today, that has changed into my passion (with setbacks due to technical issues)….it brings me joy….it’s therapeutic….it brings me closer to the blogging family….it has given me so many amazing friends….it inspires….it says in bold “you’re not alone”….though every one is but everything is interconnected….it teaches so many things at different levels…I can go on & on….all I’m saying is…..I hear you!

    1. I am so glad you could relate! Yes, blogging is definitely a great way to connect with others and to find like-minded people. It allows us to also express ourselves which can definitely be therapeutic.

  4. True… Agreed 👍🙏

    1. Glad to hear that!

  5. Great post I really enjoyed reading it. Thère are so mamy things you are right about, this is our third attempt at a blog and we finally feel that we are getting the hang of it. While we see it as our hobby it definatly isn’t easy but its fun and as you said yiu learn so much and meet some great people! Thanks for sharing Brianna and Iain

    1. Thank you! Yes, blogging can be a bit of work but it’s also a great outlet and a great way to connect with other people.

      1. Yeah we are still early in our journey with it and have met some really interesting people!

  6. Such truths! It’s been quite the journey so far with blogging

  7. Yeah there are ups and downs in blogging. But overall, the community and being able to express myself is definitely worth it. Thank you, great post!

    1. Thank you! Yes it does really allow one to express themselves which is great.

  8. Nice work, ladies! I feel I still have a lot to learn! Thanks!

    1. Thank you so much!!

  9. Great post! I learned a lot from your blogging experience, thank you for sharing them!😀

    1. Thank you so much!!

  10. I’ve learned last year that not many people will support your writing and it was a bummer! However, I think it made me realize that I started my blog because I love to write and not to be popular. I love this post!!

    1. Yeah it’s so true- not everyone will support you but like you said the main thing is to write and get it out there. Thank you so much!

  11. Thank you for sharing what you’ve learnt from blogging, it was really helpful to me! 🙂

    1. Thank you and so glad you found it helpful!

  12. I really enjoyed this. All great points. Thank you so much for sharing!

  13. Really enjoyed reading this one☺

    1. Thank you so much!

  14. Stellar post!! I could resonate with a bunch of these points. Blogging is actually a tool to improve your writing skills; thanks for sharing!

    1. Thank you! Yes I absolutely agree- blogging is such a great way to improve your writing.

  15. I didn’t know who are reading or not but I am reading compulsory the blog which I love to read. Not only I read it but also digest it.

    1. Yeah it’s important to take in what you’re reading.

  16. Great post you guys! Enjoyed reading it. I’ve learnt the same things so I agree especially people not being willing to read. They just click like and dont even really know what your content was about. But I love blogging regardless and I wont stop.

    1. Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah I think the main thing about blogging is getting your writing out there!

  17. This is so enlightening.
Honestly, I started blogging a couple of months ago as a “know-it-all”😂😂. Reading other blogs has humbled me.
Also, interacting with other bloggers is highly underrated. Lately, I’ve been interacting and I must say, I’m glad.
I’m also open to making new friends here because, this is a community of people with beautiful minds. I say beautiful minds because the posts I read are usually beautifully crafted!!!
There’s also barely hate on this platform like other social media platforms and it’s beginning to feel like it’s all support from this end.
Blogging is not as easy as people think but, I enjoy it and I’d be doing it for a long time.
    Thank you for this post❤️

    1. I absolutely agree with you! I am glad to be a part of this community as well, where everyone keeps supporting everyone.

    2. Glad you enjoyed the post! I started out that way too and was also very humbled haha 😂
Yeah I also love how for the most part this is a pretty inclusive and positive platform compared to other platforms. It really feels like a community.

  18. I saw relate to this. I stopped expecting my friends and family to read my blog.

    1. Yeah me too.

  19. A dynamic post!
Thank you for sharing. I can relate to all the lessons mentioned here even though I am a newbie here.
Somethings I can especially agree with- Life is a two way street, You can find friends everywhere…
All in all blogging is a wonderful experience.

    1. Thanks! Yes, I agree blogging is definitely a very wonderful experience!

  20. I love the last point! <3 so true!

  21. Cheers Pooj – another interesting post!! I certainly enjoy the interaction. The trouble is that when you get a lot of followers it is not possible to interact with all of them, to even read their posts becomes an impossibility.
I think it is amazing to have contact with people all over the world and make friends. It shows that we are all the same (but different). If it weren’t for power, religion and wealth, the things that cause division, we would all get along fine.

    1. Yeah I love interacting and meeting new people too- writing really brings all of us together!

  22. Hooray to this!! 🙂 Haha! I’m very very thankful for this opportunity and I hope in many years, we’ll both still be out here doing our thing! I’ve learned so much from you as I’ve learned so much from blogging. Cheers to the things we love dong! You rock my world, Pooja!
And thank you for the amazing comments people! We both love that you share the same feelings about blogging with me and Pooja! Keep writing! xo
    Elle

    1. Aww absolutely we’ll still be doing this even years later!! I absolutely loved collaborating with you and I have learnt from you and your blog as well. Always love your positive vibe and how supportive you are of everyone in the community!

  23. Incredible posts. I always manage to get brilliant insights on the blogging world from your posts. We got the best of both worlds in this posts with amazing points shared by Pooja and Elle. I could relate to most of the points shared here.

    1. Thank you so much and so glad you could relate!

  24. Great post ! Literally I agree on every points , and the Jon snow one hahaha yes its so true .

    1. Thanks and so glad you found it relatable!

  25. Great post,
I like what you said about “others wont support you” that’s really true, but then again at the end of the time as long as you are enjoying what your doing that what really matters.
“numbers” I believe that it has its own advantage and disadvantage, I agree with what you said. Its still all about your content.
No one reads anymore, that is so true as well. As “vlog” video blogging becomes a hit, some have lost the art of reading and would rather spend time watching videos as well. When some of my friends learned that I have a blog they told me that no one reads it anymore, I should switch to video blog insteadb but for me its still depends on what you want to do, what you are enjoying.
I love sharing my thoughts and opinions in a form of writing, rather than recording my self and just simply talking about it, hey its still fine which ever works for you is still alright. Its all about you anyway not what people think or want you to do.
    stay safe.

    1. I agree- it’s not about numbers it’s more about enjoying what you are doing. I prefer writing to blogging as well- it’s just so much better for expressing oneself. In my opinion at least.

  26. Words of encouragement, thank you

  27. Very nice post!!

  28. I’m not a numbers person but it’s nice to know people visit. As usual this was a good post. Thanks for posting.

    1. Thank you so much! I feel the same way.

  29. One of my favorite things about blogging is the blogging family that I have. Everyone is so friendly and supportive and it’s makes blogging so much more enjoyable! 😊🙌🏾

    1. That’s so true! Out of all the platforms I’m on I feel like WP is the most friendliest one- everyone is just so nice and supportive!

  30. Needed this one today, reminders about why I do what I do, deeply grateful for you. C

    1. Glad you enjoyed the post!!

  31. Such an amazing post! I agree with every single thing in here, and funny enough I’m going through a period of writer’s block or lack of inspiration but it’s the friends here on WP that I come back on for. Blogging really isn’t just writing down some thoughts, it’s the whole experience of engaging, sharing, debating, etc. thanks for sharing Pooja and Elle!

    1. Thank you and I absolutely agree- the whole blogging experience isn’t complete unless you engage with other bloggers and interact!

  32. Words are powerful and I think that why blogging is such a great outlet to share thoughts. I love the expression What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger bc it’s such an important life lesson!
    Lovely post !

    1. Thank you and I absolutely agree with you!

  33. Really great collaboration on the merits of blogging. It’s clear how much you love it and I’ll check out your friend’s site. Glad you are managing school with blogging!! 👏👏👏

    1. Thank you so much and I’m trying very hard to!

      1. You make it look easy…. I know otherwise!❤️

        1. Aww thanks 😊😊

  34. unfortunately, she doesn’t have reader and only email. Maybe you can ask her to enable it? Let me know.. thanks! Cindy

    1. I’ll let her know! I think it may be because she self-hosts. You can visit her site off the reader by using this link: https://ellesunpopularopinions.com/blog/

      1. Thanks for letting her know.. Trying to keep up.. not sure i’ll go there.. time and time again.. ❤️

        1. I totally get it- it’s annoying getting off the reader!

  35. A treasure trove of wisdom you are! Such profound reflections. Kudos to you and your friend whom you collaborated with!

    1. Thank you so much!!

  36. Thanks for sharing ladies. This was an interesting read and made me smile when you all pointed out most people just don’t want to read. Blogging has allowed me to slow down, pull my thoughts together and gain new perspective from others writing and life views

    1. Thank you so much! Blogging has really allowed me to do that as well and I am so thankful for it!

  37. So many great points! I’ve definitely made some awesome friends through blogging and connected with some great people who also go through life with struggles from disabilities too, but no matter what, we’re all here cheering one another on! My family don’t support what I do but you know what? That’s okay, the WordPress community is awesome! That’s an interesting point about the length of posts though. I remember reading somewhere that the number for SEO rankings in 2020 is about 2,200 words, which seems far too long. I shall definitely be playing around with shortening posts to keepmy audience engaged. Fab post, great work!

    1. Thank you so much! Yes, I have found the WP community to be extremely supportive as well which is so lovely. I’ve read that longer posts are great for SEO too but to be completely honest SEO doesn’t seem to know what real people want. Most people actually seem to prefer shorter posts.

  38. Agree on allll of these points. Blogging has been a wonderful way to make friends – two of my best blogging friends are from Europe but blogging brought us close together! 💜 Also, totally agree that ghosting others blogs will totally result in poor engagement on your own posts. However, I hate spammy likes or comments that are clearly self-serving or indicate that someone didn’t read my post.
Also, you’re totally correct about reading content. I feel like blog readers and writers are a special bunch! 💜

    1. So glad you could relate! Yes it’s such a great way to meet people from all around the world that you otherwise would probably never have met! Blog readers and writers definitely are so special and I feel like WP really feels like a community.

  39. Wow! You’ve both spoken extremely well Pooja and I really like her blog name, unpopular opinions. I think its interesting. What I resonate with most in this writeup is when both of you talk about support. Yes! It’s absolutely true. On WordPress, most of your comments, likes or even shares may not come from friends and family as you’d normally expect. I have a dozen of friends who hardly click my blogposts but the joy is I’ve got hundreds of new friends now in the WordPress community waiting for me to drop a word and that my friend is what I cherish most in all of this.

    1. Thank you and yes she totally has a really cool name! Yes, the WP community is so incredibly supportive and so responsive! I really love how everyone interacts and in my opinion it’s probably the most positive platform I have ever been on.

  40. Thank you both for sharing your wisdom. Learning from other Bloggers is so valuable 🙂

    1. Thank you so much!!

  41. I can relate to the need to be inspired to write, and I take my hat off to people who can post multiple times a week – I can only do it once. If I have inspiration for more than one, I save it for next week’s installment. 😁
Like you say, blogging isn’t easy. I took a break and came back and just about all of the people I followed before aren’t blogging anymore.

    1. Yeah I honestly agree it’s so difficult coming up with new topics to write about and it can end up taking the fun out of blogging. A lot of people don’t make it past the first three months.

  42. WOW. Lovely post. Thank you for sharing this Pooja 😊🥰

    1. Thank you so much- so glad you enjoyed it!

      1. Yaay! I surely did. 🥰😄

  43. I’ve met so many people from different continents via WordPress. Just the communication and positive energy from them makes blogging worthwhile[you being a wonderful example, Pooja😊]
The two way street on WP is so true. I for one enjoy the interaction in the comments section. So lovely to read other people’s perspective on what you post.
And yes we know nothing😅. That’s the reality and it’s simply a learning process for us all.
Loved this collaboration. Big ups to you and Elle!💚❤

    1. Thank you so glad you enjoyed our collaboration!
I agree- WP is such a great way to meet people and talk to people in the comments section. I feel like this is the one platform that’s actually very interactive!

  44. Nice collaboration, I agree with the fact that what doesn’t kill u makes u stronger and other points too are well stated

    1. Thank you so much!

  45. This is such a great post, Pooja and I’m sure that this will be really helpful to bloggers who are just starting out. I totally agree with you.

    1. Thank you so much!!

  46. Nice post. I agree, WordPress community is very supportive. When you read, you come across different types of blogs & new things. What amazes me is that everyone has different perspective of seeing things.

    1. Thank you and I totally agree!

  47. Awesome points thank you so much for sharing them.

  48. You are so right about people not paying much attention on the content. I had to pipe down my long blogs to attract audience. Because it is just so easy to scroll through pictures/memes than to observe words (I am guilty of doing that!!)
Can so relate with writers block😩..
    Great post 🧡🧡 xx

    1. Yeah I am guilty of focusing on the memes/gifs as well lol! Glad you enjoyed the post!

  49. I have also learnt some of the same things that was mentioned! Its really important, and I like that you said how blogging isn’t always rainbows and butterflies, and there are hard parts of blogging as well. I have read some of Elle’s blogs and they are amazing! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thank you and so glad you could relate! Yes, her blog is definitely amazing I’m so glad you enjoyed it.

  50. I so agree with your points….I am learning all of this too. This space is like a community. It is much more closely knitted than other social media. Infact, I love it’s uniqueness and the love showed her. I actually think you are the queen of blogging here. By the way, I have been meaning to ask, what country are you from?

    1. Yes it definitely is a lot more of a close knitted family than other platforms. Omg I am definitely far from the queen of blogging but thank you! I’m from Kenya. What about you?

      1. 😂😂😂 She said she’s far from being a queen
        You’re welcome
        I am from Nigeria

        1. Ooh interesting! I had a professor from Nigeria last year- Nigeria has a very interesting history.

          1. Sure we do😩😩 We do not just appreciate our own things and it is bad. We have so many good attributes. I pray God will bless Africa

            1. He will- it’s really Africa’s time to shine right now! We have so many resources and so many hardworking people.

              1. Abi😩😩😩

  51. This is so true😊

  52. As always, thank you for the excellent post. Always encouraging to a new blogger.

    1. Thank you so much!!

  53. Thanks for the like! Great post, how long have you been blogging for on WordPress? I just started and I don’t care about numbers really but I’d love to hear comments and feedback from readers if I’ve at all helped someone out there and what they wanna hear more on 🙂

    1. Thank you! I’ve been blogging since 2014 .

  54. Lovely post! I definitely learned these things too. I’ve spent so much of my reading going through blogs here on WordPress and its been a pleasure. I learn so much from new topics to new perspectives. I love it!

    1. Thank you! I know you really learn so much from other bloggers!

  55. Some great insights there, Pooja (and Elle), lots of it resonates with me that’s for sure.

    1. Thank you so much!!

  56. Nice 👏🏻👍🏻

  57. A very informative blog which a newbie like myself could really benefit from! I also took notice that this post is in collaboration with another blogger and I think collaborations not only make you grow but it also benefits the other bloggers as well!

    1. Thank you and yes collaborations are such a win-win!

      1. Would love to collaborate some day, please feel free to take a look at my posts and let me know if you’d be interested in collaborating

        1. I would love to collaborate in the future- I’m not doing collabs right now since I’m busy with university.

          1. That sounds good and best of luck!

  58. Your post related to me on many different levels. I also know nothing. Most of the time I’m trying to express thoughts in my head I have no way of verbalizing.

    1. Thank you and I feel the same way!

  59. I’ve learned that expressing myself on my blog is a great way to express emotions that might otherwise stay bottled up inside. Then, when I least expect, they can explode at a most inopportune time. Blogging and especially the people I’ve connected with have encouraged me to actively work through difficult emotions in a more productive way. What I write might be useful for others as they journey through life.
Perseverance is another thing blogging has helped me learn. Some days writing is difficult, so we take a necessary break for a day or two, and come back with renewed energy and enthusiasm. I love writing! All forms of it! But I am human, and as such cannot write effectively and usefully 100% of the time.
    Thank you for sharing! ♥

    1. Blogging is a great way to express oneself and this community is so incredibly supportive!

  60. […] 5 THINGS I’VE LEARNT FROM BLOGGING by Lifesfinewhine […]

  61. As a first time blogger, I’m thankful for your advice, because my account is brand, sparkling new and I feel like a technophobe in an Apple Store. I’ve had to call in the troops – my savvy, older children for a terminology tutorial and enrol in a course, to finally get to the point where I have a WordPress account, and all of it for the sake of my thriller, which is almost done after a full year of daily writing and rewriting. Phew. Talk about stepping out of a comfort zone.
Your article has taught me a few good things. Collaboration, as you’ve done on this post, is admirable. I’m looking at that too for my blog. Perhaps this will ease the transition from my natural introversion and help for more interesting and useful content to share with my readers (when I get them.) I like your point about caring about your readers and having an enquiring mind, not scared of learning. All in all your post inspires me, so thanks for the advice.

    1. I’m glad you found this post helpful! It does take a while to learn everything- it took me quite a while too but it’s a lot more fun when you get used to everything.
Collabs are definitely a great win-win!
