1. Thanks so much for being a part of this interview. Tell us a little bit about yourself and what your blog is about.
Unfortunately, I can’t tell you my real name, but I go by the pseudonym Over-The-Shoulder – which I think is pretty cool, but it’s a personal preference. I live in London and I’m a screenwriter. I review TV and film for my blog, varying from classics like The Godfather to new blockbusters like Parasite. I like to think of it as ‘gonzo’ journalism, which, hopefully, makes Over-The-Shoulder a little more original.
2. When did you start your blog and what made you decide to start blogging?
I started last year in November, so we’re still a little fresh out of the block. Why did I start blogging? To be honest, it really came out of the blue. I just really love writing, and I really love watching TV. It felt like a match made in heaven, and as I wasn’t working at the time, I started up the blog, not knowing the hell what I was doing. Ever since, it’s been a great learning experience and it’s going better than I ever could of hoped.
3. I’m a huge fan of The Office and noticed you were getting into it- how are you liking it so far?
Ha! Yes, The Office – I laugh just thinking about it. I love it. I love sitcoms anyhow, partly because unlike anything else in life they’re so easy to watch and provide some much needed escapism, especially in tough times like these. I’m in the sixth series now, and alongside Seinfeld and Arrested Development, it’s probably in my top three, or at least top five, favourite sitcoms. I think we can agree, if only you and me, Pooja, The Office is a great watch.
4. What are some of your favourite TV shows and movies to have reviewed so far?
That’s a good one – Fight Club is a fantastic film and I think Parasite definitely deserves the raucous praise it received. I enjoyed, both a little surprisingly, Uncut Gems, starring Adam Sandler, and relatively unknown American Animals, and I highly recommend either or. And if anyone needs a new series to watch, I reckon Ozark is your best bet. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel I haven’t reviewed yet, but I would also put that on my list.
5. Have you ever gotten any negative comments about your reviews and if so how did you deal with them?
So far, so good. I’ll be honest, I don’t mind a negative comment – in fact, I implore my readers to disagree with me. One of the main reasons I started a blog is to create a community that could join together to just discuss great films or shows. I want us to bounce ideas off of each other and conversations to spark. I think that’s the most important part of blogging. Once, a very wise person said to me, it’s about “not just talking at people, but being part of a conversation.” To that I say, amen.
6. Has blogging changed how you watch things or what movies/tv shows you pick to watch?
For sure. Before, I could just let things sort of wash over me, if you know what I mean. I didn’t really have to concentrate on what was going on. Now, I think I value films or TV far more because when you actually watch something – truly just watch it – it’s like nothing else. It is incredible. It’s definitely helped me in my work to watch so many different genres, or styles, or techniques, to see what works and what doesn’t, what I like and don’t, and try and incorporate that in what I do. Film is such a fascinating thing because it lets us live vicariously – I can be a drug kingpin, a comedian, a boxer, a jazz musician and a deer hunter all in one day. Nothing can replicate that. Blogging has helped me truly appreciate film and TV.
7. What is your favourite food?
Toughest one so far. I don’t want to be that guy who says pasta, but I do really like pasta. To sound sophisticated, I’ll say, al dente strozzapreti with a rich and spicy ragù sauce. Delectable 😏
8. What is the weirdest thing you believed as a child?
That is cruel. Such a hard question… Ok, I’ll go with that my parents were perfect. If I’m in for a rollicking tonight, I’m blaming you, Pooja.
9. What was your favourite movie when you were growing up?
Without a doubt, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. What more needs to be said? I think it may even be more delectable than al dente strozzapreti.
