1. Thanks so much for being a part of this interview. Tell us a little bit about yourself and what your blog is about.
My name is Deidre but everyone just calls me Dee because it’s easier. I love music, cats, fashion and classic TV. My blog is about various topics pertaining to the decade of the 1950’s.
2. When did you start your blog and what inspired you to start a blog?
I started my blog on September 21, 2017. It was 60 years and one day after “Peggy Sue” dropped in record stores nationwide. I didn’t know what to write about for a first post, so I just wrote about that. As far as writing goes, it was pretty bad. But it was my first post! Hopefully, I’ve grown as a writer since then. I’ve always enjoyed writing, though. English was my best subject. I wanted a blog and I wanted to write about something that made me happy. The 1950’s were a very happy time and I enjoy writing about it. I didn’t know how many people would even read my blog, but I figured maybe anyone who did could get a glimpse of what a wonderful era the 1950s were.
3. Your blog revolves around the fifties- what is it about this decade that fascinates you?
What fascinates me about the 1950’s is how happy and perfect everyone seemed. I mean, maybe nothing was ever completely perfect, and the 50’s were no exception, but they did a pretty good job of making everything look perfect. I guess “perfect” can mean different things to different people. To me, “perfect” and “ideal” are synonymous. Most everyone in those days was happy, carefree and secure. There was structure, stability, manners, morals and values. People back then knew how to have fun without causing irreversible damage. All the innocence and romance of the era just enchants me. There was just the right amount of decent behavior and just the right amount of rebelliousness. It must have been spectacular to be a teenager then. I hear it was pretty great. Personally, I’m not the type who gets off on chaos and danger. I think most people are. It’s not Human Nature to be too good for too long. That’s why the manners and morals of the 1950’s didn’t last— it was just a short period of time where things were “ideal”. Even I get bored with the thought of all that structure sometimes. Even I sometimes think that life in the 50’s must have been a TAD dull… but my love for the era will never die. Without actually having lived in it, from what I can see, to me it really was “The Best Era Ever”.
4. What are some of your favourite things from the fifties?
The music, obviously. Also the clothes. I love 1950’s fashion! The cars were beautiful too, but certainly not my area of expertise… And do I need to mention, the guys? Okay, the guys! I love the way they dressed; so clean-cut and dapper.
5. What song do you think really defines the fifties and really captures what it was like to live in that era?
Definitely “Come And Go With Me” by The Del-Vikings. That song encapsulates the entire era. It’s the 1950’s in a song! Each time I hear it, it’s like being transported back in time.
6. When did you first get immersed into the fifties and why do you think you were drawn to this era in particular?
I always loved the era, but I didn’t fully dedicate myself to it until 2016. I just happened to hear some of Buddy Holly’s music that I hadn’t heard before and I fell in love! I was always drawn to the 50’s though. I’ve tried to figure out why, but there’s not one real reason. I think maybe I’m one of those people who should have been living in a different time period!
7. What is your favourite food?
It depends but I’m sure it’s probably fried.
8. What is your favourite song?
NO way can I pick ONE favorite song! 100 maybe, but not one. I’d say about all my favorites are from the 1950’s decade and most of them are by Buddy Holly and The Everly Brothers. But then there’s Chuck Berry, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, Jerry Lee Lewis and all the rest. And there are a ton of other early Rock N Roll songs and Doo Wop hits that I could put on the list.
9. Where do you see yourself in ten years?
Uh, middle-aged?

Thank you for giving me this opportunity, I truly appreciate it. I’d like to tell the readers not to believe everything they see on TV and in the Movies about the 1950’s (or any era!). Always cross-reference things with people who actually study the facts. I’m by no means an expert, so I don’t necessarily mean me. But there are historians and preservationists out there who have the answers and the truth. Anytime you take an interest in History, it’s best to go with reliable sources and take everything else with a grain of salt.
