Interview With Candy

Blogger Interview

I am super excited to share this interview with you guys- Candy is absolutely wonderful and her blog is so cool I am sure you will love it so be sure to check it out and as always it will be linked at the end of the interview.

1. Thanks so much for being a part of this interview. Tell us a little bit about yourself and what your blog is about.

Hi! My my name is Candy Keane and my blog is GeekMamas.com. It’s basically a geeky version of a “mom blog.” It’s a blend of personal stories, product reviews and geek culture/lifestyle.

2. When did you start your blog and what made you decide to start blogging?

I started the Geek Mamas blog in 2015, after I had my son. Before that I had an anonymous blog about my infertility experience and eventual IVF. I started that blog because I was going through so much at the time that I needed to connect with other people who were going through the same thing. I chronicled the entire experience and grew to love blogging and the community involved in it. Writing and making those connections helped me through a very difficult time.

Once I had my son, I realized I still wanted to keep blogging. But honestly the last thing the infertility community wants to read about is someone complaining how hard motherhood is while they are fighting so hard just to get to that point. So I knew the best thing would be to start a totally new, public blog.

3. I love the name of your blog “geekmamas”- how did you come up with it?

Thank you! I’m a geek and a mom, and I actually wanted to call it “Geeky Mamas” but that name was already taken by a store in California. I eventually settled on “Geek Mamas” and made the name plural because I had big plans to involve other geeky moms and guest posts. Then for the first couple years of the blog, I really just used it as space to complain about how awful toddlers can be! Lol

In the past year I’ve finally started to bring more of the geek angle into it and make it more like my original vision.

4. What do you love about comic books and what are your favourites?

This is going to sound bad for my geek cred, but I actually don’t read comic books. I always loved the covers and then would be disappointed that the inside art didn’t match the cover. Sometimes even the outfits would look different. I love making costumes and cosplay, so I’m always attracted to the costume more than the story. I do have a comic book collection though, that I’ve bought just to recreate the costume on the cover.

5. How do you find the time to blog with everything else going on in your life?

Blogging is my therapy, so for me it’s a necessity to write. Sometimes I get up in the middle of the night just to get stuff out of my head so I can go back to sleep. Rather than lie there and go over and over stuff in my head, I can “head dump” it by writing. Not all of it ends up on the blog, but a majority of my best posts are written during a flurry of emotion where it just pours out of my head and onto the page.

I also like to get up really early, before my son and husband get up, and work on the blog while it’s nice and quiet.

6. What are some of your favourite things to geek out about?

I love super heroes! Wonder Woman, Avengers, Justice League…all of it. I’m also a huge Star Wars fan. So much so, that I’m on the cover of a Star Wars documentary called Jedi Junkies. (You can find it on Amazon) I also love Harry Potter and video games. And movies based on video games.

7. What is your favourite food?

I love sushi and Japanese food in general. Second to that is tacos.

8. What is the weirdest thing you believed in as a child?

I once tried to dig out all of the crumbs from the inside of a cookie, because I figured then I’d be able to walk around the house while eating it and not drop any crumbs. It did not go as planned.

9. What are some of your favourite hobbies other than blogging?

Making costumes and cosplay! I like to dress up as my favorite characters and attend Comic Con type conventions. You can see my costume work on my instagram @SewGeekMama

10. Thanks again and please feel free to add anything you would like to share with the readers.

I published a children’s book about a little boy attending his first Comic Con, right as COVID shut all the conventions down! Talk about terrible timing. Our book release and all the promo plans were cancelled. I’m hoping to get a second chance this year as conventions are slowly coming back. The book is on Amazon: I’m Going to My First Comic Convention
