Natural Remedies For Depression

Introduction

If you’ve been following my blog for a while now you are probably aware that I suffer from anxiety and depression. I haven’t talked too much about it recently but I decided to start talking about mental health more regularly again. I talk about my anxiety more than depression but I decided to talk about depression in this post.

Now, I understand that a lot of people choose to take medication for their depression. Especially if it’s more severe which is perfectly fine. But I personally have chosen to use natural methods to help me reduce the symptoms of depression. I tried medication but it did not work for me. If you are interested in how I use natural methods to reduce my depression keep reading. I think natural methods work really well for some people and even if you do take medication for depression there’s really no harm in trying these since they’ll help too. Natural remedies such as essential oils, aromatherapy, lifestyle changes and more have been shown to benefit many with mental health issues and so I think they’re definitely worth trying.

CBD Oil

CBD oil has been really helpful with both my anxiety and depression. When I first started hearing about it I was pretty skeptical. Mostly, because it was coming from influencers who were pretty obviously sponsored. So it was hard for me to take them seriously. It seemed like they were exaggerating the benefits and I had seen a lot of people try to sell all kinds of crap in the name of curing mental health problems. So, I thought this was one of those things.

However, thankfully, I caved in and decided to try it for myself. I started using CBD oil daily and the benefits were almost instant. I started to feel so much less anxious, I could concentrate better, my insomnia went away and I started to feel happy again.

This story might sound really sad but it’s actually a happy memory for me I promise. After taking CBD oil for a few days I started to find things interesting and fun again and I remember the exact turning point for me. I was on a bus on my way back home from university and was talking to a friend and we were joking about something and I laughed. Like I laughed for the first time in years. I mean, I obviously laugh at stuff but not like this. I usually found things mildly amusing and laughed for the sake of it but this was a genuine laugh. I’ve been laughing ever since- to a point where it’s concerning actually. Just kidding!

But yeah, that was the moment where it really hit me. I didn’t realise how depressed I was till I wasn’t anymore. I know it sounds weird but that was my experience and I always want to keep it real with you guys.

So, if you are looking for a sign to try CBD oil this is it. It has helped me a lot and I hope it can help others out there too.

Yoga And Meditation

Daily yoga and meditation is something else that has really helped me a lot when it comes to my mental health. The benefits of yoga and meditation don’t show up instantly so you do have to be patient but over time it came be life changing.

Both help you to control your mind and emotions. And consequently help you deal with your problems in a healthy way. They also help to better your energy and make you feel more positive. I feel like when I skip either my day just feels off now.

I find meditation particularly helpful because I always had a hard time dealing with my problems. With meditation, I can sit down and really think about them without feeling overwhelmed by negative emotions. Personally, I still feel the negative emotions but meditation has helped me acknowledge and deal with them in a healthy way.

Proper Routine

Having a proper routine and taking care of your body is also super helpful. Having a schedule, sleeping on time, eating healthy, getting exercise and self-care can be extremely beneficial for people with mental health problems like depression.

When I first went vegan. I began eating much healthier than before and over time I felt so much better and still do. I have much more energy now. Eating healthy is also totally possible on a non-vegan diet. It’s just I wasn’t eating that healthy before but going vegan pushed me to eat healthier. Cheetos not being vegan may have saved my life…

But seriously, eating healthy on a daily basis, sleeping well, exercising and taking care of yourself makes a big difference for your mental health. I always think about it like this- if you were physically unwell you would be told to rest, eat healthy etc. so why not do that when you’re mentally unwell.

Conclusion

I really hope all these tips were beneficial for you. If you have any questions or would like me to elaborate on anything feel free to leave a comment and I will reply as soon as possible. I am always happy to share my mental health journey with you guys in the hopes that it will help others going through something similar.

Dealing with things naturally is great but they are much milder and often take longer to work. If you feel like they aren’t working for you please seek professional help. There is nothing wrong with seeking help and it can be extremely beneficial to do so.

  1. I’ve often had a concern about those who talk about natural alternatives as though they are safer or better than medication. It’s great if it works for you and hopefully continues to do so. To be honest, CBD oil is a medication just like other medications…natural does not mean that it is risk free nor does it mean it isn’t medicinal..sorry, this is just a pet peeve of mine and no reflection on you. Natural doesn’t mean totally safe. There are potential side effects. You can get it prescribed by the way…which might be a better grade of it if you find it useful though apparently mostly for seizure disorders, but they want to study the effect on other issues, so you might actually help medical science to go through a doctor. Just putting this info for interest sake for those considering it. It may not play well with some medications. https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/consumer-health/expert-answers/is-cbd-safe-and-effective/faq-20446700. People with allergies to it’s components might be best to avoid it. Hope it continues to benefit you and if so, that you are able to go through a medical practitioner who can set you up and get data to the Mayo Clinic for them to be able to speak more effectively on it’s benefits. Hope this is of some interest.

    1. cbd oil and cannabis products are legal in canada.

      1. Yes, I wasn’t talking about legality, I was talking about medicinal grade is generally better than the off the shelf stuff. There is quality control which you would not get as much off the shelf. This is a well document fact. Further, there are benefits, for example, medical prescription will be able to be claimed if you are working and have health coverage. It’s not about legality, but practicality 🙂

        1. My apologies. Practicality is always a good thing.

          1. Especially if it can save you money and get you better quality. Always factors to consider. It is legal in Canada. On the other hand I’m dreadfully allergic, but someone needs meds, then it is often oral especially CBD oil and they should get the best possible to make sure they aren’t getting short changed. Practicality is often useful to know about 🙂

            1. You’re right. Not everything works the same way for everyone. So true. Myself, I’m so ultra sensitive to anything that I have to be very careful. Stay well. Tanks so much for your patience. xo

    2. Yeah, I agree just because they’re natural doesn’t necessarily mean they’re safer or better for you. I think it depends on the person and what works for them. As I mentioned if medication works best for someone they should continue using it but medication was just not working for me which is why I had to switch to trying alternative ways to deal with my depression and I know some others feel the same way so I thought I would share this in case anyone was looking for alternative methods.
I think what I’m using at the moment is working for me but if I feel like I want to get a prescription I’ll definitely talk to a doctor. They can probably help with the amount too.
Thanks and I’ll definitely check if I can get my results to people studying the effects of CBD oil or even cannabis in general. I know they don’t have a lot of information about it yet so I would love to contribute whatever I can 😊

      1. Also, if you are working and have a health plan, it won’t cost you as much as it must now. You’d have it covered. There could be benefits to your pocket book as well 🙂

        1. I have health insurance from my university- I’ll check if that will cover some of the costs.

          1. Remember, if you can get it covered, then it’s more money in your pocket 🙂

  2. Hi Pooja. I’m glad you were able to try something that helped. What I really like is that you’re not relying solely on the cbd oil but also on lifestyle. I think you’re very smart about these things and share wisdom. I’d love it if you’d do a follow up to this in about a months time. I’d be curious as to whether there become a resistance to the oil or whether same amount works the same way. Keep fighting to stay positive. I look forward to hearing more.

    1. Thanks so much! Yeah, I always try not to rely on just one thing. That was an issue for me with the medication too- I relied on it too much and kept needing a higher dose which made side effects worse. Plus, the medication for my depression made me anxious and the medication for my anxiety made me depressed. I feel like there’s a plot for a TV show in there 😂
I will definitely do an update but I’ve been using CBD oil for about two years now and I’ve done a couple posts on it if you’re interested:
      https://lifesfinewhine.ca/2020/02/28/trying-cbd-oil-for-my-anxiety/
      https://lifesfinewhine.ca/2020/05/19/update-cbd-oil-for-anxiety/
Basically, my body did the opposite of become resistant to it and I started with using it daily but now use it every two or three days. Sometimes I just use it once a week and that’s enough. I do plan on doing another update soon so I’ll talk more in detail about it then.

      1. I love that you’re so wise about these things. Too many doctors want to toss chemicals at us and there has to be alternatives. I will look at your other entries that i missed. Thanks so much for sharing. ❤️

        1. Thanks. I so agree- I feel like people are just instantly put on meds before exploring other alternatives. There’s nothing wrong with taking medication if you have to but it shouldn’t be the only route available. When I complained about my side effects my doctor just kept switching the medications instead of offering other alternatives and I had to find these on my own which was kind of annoying. Happy to share the information 😊

          1. Thanks Pooja!

  3. That’s such great advice. I usually just go to bed and start binge watching comedies.

    1. Lol I do that too- I’m actually doing that right now once I’m done with replying to comments.

  4. Thank you, Pooja! I’m so glad you’re feeling better. Just one note – St. John’s Wort is sometimes recommended as a natural remedy for depression, but talk to your doctor about this, because it interferes with a lot of other medications!
I’m so happy that you found things to help you that are natural. Great suggestions! For everyone: Please do discuss how you’re feeling with your doctor, even if you want to go the homeopathic route. They may have more natural suggestions too!
    Best wishes!

    1. I’ll definitely talk to her about it thanks for the recommendation! I’m not taking any medication so it shouldn’t be a problem but it’s still better to be safe.
Agreed- always see a professional and talk to them so you can get a proper diagnosis and can work together in finding a way to cure/get rid of symptoms.

  5. Thank you, pooja. That will definitely help.

    1. Glad to hear that!

  6. These are really helpful Pooja. Thanks for sharing them.

    1. Glad to hear that and happy to share them.

  7. “I didn’t realise how depressed I was until I wasn’t” This just sums up depression itself, doesn’t it? It’s such a debilitating and deadly disease to have. Robs you of so much! I’m very sorry you have to go through it. Glad these methods are working for you. I hope you continue to do (and feel) better and better… Yoga never fails (with personal experience). Stay blessed 🤍

    1. Yup depression can very often be a silent killer and it’s definitely very dangerous because often people don’t show obvious symptoms till it’s too late. Thanks- I’m doing a lot better and hope to continue improving!

  8. I have tried CBD oil several times, but it just makes me angry. Ginseng has this effect on me too. I still think that the best way to treat depression is to smack the person who caused it on the head with a sledgehammer! Metaphorically, I suppose…

    1. Lol sometimes literally smacking them with a skillet helps too! 😂

      1. Don’t tempt me!

  9. some great tips here, Pooja. I’m glad they have helped you with your depression, and perhaps your advice will help others. just keep an eye on that laughing… 🙂

    1. Thanks- I’ve been laughing a lot today so I may have to keep a look out on that 😂

      1. as long as you’re aware of it 🙂

  10. Thank you so much Pooja for sharing these tips I really need them these days. Even I suffer from anxiety. I’ll definitely save this post cause I have been having anxiety attacks a lot lately.❤️‍🩹🥺😭😭

    1. I’m so sorry to hear that and hope these tips help! 💖💖

      1. Don’t be sorry its just I am surrounded by toxic people in my life they’re ridiculous I have literally stopped caring or listening to them. Not emotionally attached to them.✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼

  11. Thank you for sharing. I have been thinking of using CBD oil too. I do take medication, but I hope someday, I can come off it. The way I see it is medication is like an oil change for your car

    1. Yes exactly- that’s how I felt on meds! I would recommend talkin to your doctor and if CBD oil is okay to take with your medication I would recommend starting it. It doesn’t work for everyone but from my experience as well as some friends I have been talking too it’s been quite helpful. Hopefully, over time you will be able to decrease your medication or get off it completely.

      1. Thanks. Yeah, I do think I will talk to him someday about it. I like how in Canada, they are able to do combinations to work for different things. My Mum is allergic to opioids so she is thinking of using CBD whenever she needs an operation

  12. This is such a helpful post! Kudos for thinking and putting this out. I have heard about CBD oil but din know the details so it helped me. These times are so hard and mental health takes a toll even more than usual, it has to be a forever topic.

    1. Thanks! I agree we need to keep talking about mental health as much as possible. CBD oil is extremely helpful so I would definitely recommend trying it out.

  13. I’m glad you felt happy to share this. I am on medication for my depression but I have recently (few months now) started using CBD as well. I don’t use it daily but I do use it to help with anxiety and chronic pain. There is no one size fits all, so whatever you need to do to help care for yourself, medication, therapy, CBD, yoga.. do it, and be proud that you are addressing your mental health needs like you would your physical health.

    1. I’m happy to share it- I just hope it encourages others out there to take care of their mental health!
CBD oil is quite helpful so I hope it’s been helping with your pain and anxiety.
I agree everyone is different and different things help different people. The main thing is to address the issue and try to deal with it.

  14. Thank you so much for posting these. I hate meds so learning other avenues is important to me.

  15. I suspect more than half of the population has issues with depression. However, there is new research this month linking Covid survival and anxiety. For those who get seriously ill, anxiety is detrimental to survival. That ups the ante for learning how to deal with this rather dramatically.
    Great post.

  16. Hi Pooja, thanks a lot for sharing these. I prefer natural remedies over medications too! And stay strong girl <3 You've got this

  17. These are really helpful. Thanks for sharing

  18. All of those are so important Pooja!💖👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

  22. Wow. I go with yoga.

    1. Yoga is absolutely wonderful.

  24. I too use CBD. I’m currently taking 3 x15 mg capsules at night, with Melatonin added into the capsule. helps me to sleep better! Menopause is a horrible sleep interrupter, and I’ve struggled with anxiety and depression for most of my life so this really helps me! Getting better sleep is a wonderful help for other health ailments too!

I’m not into yoga, even though I keep promising myself I’ll get started! I rely on meditative walks in the park to help restore my inner balance and to keep my blood moving with gentle exercise!

Having had chronic shingles, I’ve also been taking lots of vitamin c, and I try to remember to take my fish oil capsules too, both of which help the immune system, as well as help the body to deal with anxiety and depression.

I don’t always have a big appetite, so eating nutritionally dense foods (some superfoods) really helps keep my diet on track!

    1. I’m glad the CBD capsules are helping. Yeah I’ve heard menopause can make sleeping well difficult for some.

Yoga is wonderful- you should try some out if you ever have the time.

      1. 🌼🌼I keep signing up for virtual sessions but my schedule keeps getting in the way. I’m sure I’ll do it! 😬

  28. Dear sir, Anxiety is natural in human being, but if always struck our mind set ,it convert in dipression.
It is the state of mind which always affect our natural activity and daily working. Avoid unusual thought focus your goal in other direction.

    1. Unfortunately, anxiety is normal but when the anxiety stops you from functioning normally it turns into a disorder. For me depression came before anxiety. Yes, I agree focusing on your goals helps to distract you from your mental health issues.

      1. Thanks for reply.

  30. Lucky you.. U found something to help you.. I m still looking though

    1. Thanks and I truly hope you find something too.

  31. Routine is MASSIVE. I completely agree. I think paying attention to our sleep is very important. The more we can reenforce our circadian rhythm the better. Sticking to the same bedtime/wakeup time and then building an evening routine that includes journalling/yoga and a kick ass morning routine that includes meditation and exercise has had a profound impact on my mental and physical wellbeing. Great post. Wishing you well Pooja 🙏

    1. Thanks! Yes, routine really helps keep us feeling better mentally and physically.

  32. Yoga and meditation has helped me so much as well, I have been on the fence about trying CBD oil but i think its worth a shot!

    1. Yoga and meditation are so great for your health and yeah I would totally recommend giving CBD oil a try!

  33. I would like to add to this; if we spend some morning time in direct sunrays, then it is really beneficial in enhancing one’s positive attitude towards life.

    1. Thanks for adding that and I agree getting some sun helps.

      1. It was good hearing back from you.

  34. Nice post. I do meditation and Tai Chi. My routine is haphazard, but I’m working on it. Also, I’m on a high dose of anti-psychotics and anti-depressants, as I have mental disorders more severe than depression and anxiety.

    1. Thanks and best of luck in finding a better routines. Yeah medication can be quite helpful and doing these alongside taking the meds is good too.

  35. I was researching a post on depression I don’t know if it came out well… but anyway in the midst of my researches I found out that the fizzy drink 7 Up used to be made with lithium-water… isn’t that weird? I was wondering if anyone with recurrent depressions or bipolar got “cured” through drinking this lithium water? Then I got to wondering how many natural remedies out there really do work, probably quite a few. The problem with CBD oil is I don’t think it was possible to separate it from the rest of the cannabis preparation until relatively recently which means you’d have had to get stoned on the yukky stuff. In my opinion cannabis is no cure for depression at all. I’d like to try CBD though. Do you have a specific product you can recommend?

    1. I think the drug Lithium and lithium-water may be different in certain ways so I don’t know if a soft drink would help with mental illness. The oil I get is local but I would recommend checking out any cannabis stores in your area most of them carry CBD oil.

  36. I suffer from depression and anxiety too, Pooja. I was searching in the WP reader to find others who understand and found this post. I believe we connected in blogland a long time ago. Thanks for writing about it and sharing your tips. 🙏

    1. I’m so glad you were able to find this post and so nice to connect with you again!
