More Tips For Newer Bloggers

Newer Bloggers

I wanted to write a post for newer bloggers since I get a lot of comments and emails from newer bloggers asking for help. I think it’s a lot more difficult to blog when you first start and there are a lot of things you may not even be aware of yet so this kind of post may help you understand the world of blogging a little better.

Of course, this advice is just the tip of the iceberg and obviously there is a lot more to blogging then just the things I mentioned on this blog. I would recommend checking out my other advice posts that you can view by clicking here.

Research

I think the most important thing when it comes to starting anything new is research. As you may or may not know I’m a history major which means that a huge part of my life currently revolves around research and that skill has helped me a lot with blogging too.

There is still so much I don’t know about blogging but what I do know has been extremely beneficial. There are a lot of features that WordPress offers, even in the free plan. Research can help you make use of these features and get the best results possible with them. I made the mistake of not doing a lot of research when I started out and I so regret it now because I’ve had to keep going back to older blog posts and make changes.

I would also recommend doing at least basic research on SEO and SEO optimization because this can be very helpful too. It’s particularly helpful if you are looking to monetize your blog at some point or if one of your goals is to grow your following and traffic.

Stay Safe

I’m not sure why this isn’t mentioned very often in advice posts I see for beginners but I just want to warn everyone that although WordPress in general is a wonderful place it’s important to remember that not everyone has good intentions. There will always be scammers or people trying to take advantage of you so remember to be cautious and stay safe. Don’t give out any personal information, if someone seems weird ignore them and don’t engage.

I also want to warn you to be cautious around members of MLM’s. I don’t want to go into too much detail about what MLM’s are but they are basically scams or pyramid schemes. If someone approaches you and tries to recruit you for an MLM run as fast as you can. So many people fall for scams like this and lose THOUSANDS of dollars of their hard earned money. For more on why MLM’s are the worst you can check out this channel.

There are also a lot of fake brands/companies trying to act like they want to send you free or discount products so be careful of those too. Always do your research before working with anyone. The internet is a scary place and you need to always take care.

Be Patient

I know a lot of us expect to grow our blogs really fast and start earning money and living the dream almost instantly (thanks annoying influencers who make it seem like it’s super easy to achieve that even though it’s obviously not!) but the truth is it takes a while before your blog really starts growing. It sucks but that’s just how it is.

It’s not even about the quality of your posts or anything you’re doing wrong. The truth is that it’s hard to grow your traffic and following overnight since there are so many popular blogs out there already and unfortunately the WP algorithm as well as search engines tend to push whatever is popular instead of what is really great quality content.

BUT being patient has it’s perks. People will begin to notice your posts, search engines tend to place more value on blogs that are older and so does WP’s algorithm. You’ll also get much better at blogging over time so you’ll also learn how to create posts your followers/readers enjoy which will also what will help you grow. Plus, you will have found your niche/niches which also helps a lot.

Consistency

I feel like this one goes hand-in-hand with being patient so I wanted to add it here too. A lot of people tend to give up after a few months, weeks or even a few days when they don’t see any results. Don’t do this. It takes a while to get results and if you don’t blog consistently you will never see the results you are looking for on any platform.

Another issue is that people don’t always blog on a schedule which can often be an issue. Your readers will expect you to post at certain times and if you don’t post at those times they will probably think you stopped blogging and move on to a different blog that does post consistently. Even if you can’t post very often try to have some kind of schedule. Like if you post once a week post on the same day and same time every week. Many of your readers may not be following your blog so they won’t know when you have posted something new automatically. If you post at the same times they will know when to check out your blog. This will keep your readers coming back which in turn will help you grow.

I know that it’s not always possible to post on a schedule- even after years of blogging I still find it difficult to do but there are some tricks you can use when you don’t have a post ready. You can reblog posts you have read from other bloggers that you find interesting, you can reblog older posts of your own or you can share something simple like a nice quote or YouTube video. Just make sure you post something!

Final Thoughts

I hope you found this post helpful. If you did please let me know in the comments below and let me know if you would like a part two of this post or if there is any specific type of advice post you would like me to share in the coming weeks.

What advice would you give new bloggers? Are you a new blogger? If so, how are you liking blogging so far? What advice do you wish you had known when you first started blogging? How is your day going? Mine is going terrible thanks for asking… Tell me your answers in the comments below or simply stop by and say hi- I don’t bite I swear that’s just a rumour!

  1. This is great advice, Pooja. I’ve been blogging for ten+ years so I know the ropes pretty well…

  2. Hi Pooja, Are there supposed to be links in this post? I was trying to follow up on your mentions to “click here” for your other posts and the part about MLM’s, but I can’t seem to find the link.

    1. Hi, I’m so sorry but I think I had forgotten to add the links. I’ve added them now and confirmed that they work, Thanks so much for letting me know.

  3. True. Seems a lot of things scammers do. It’s hard for any writer blog or almost anything online has potential to be misused. Sad 😢.

    1. Yup definitely sad because a lot of people end up falling for these scams.

      1. That’s the sad thing. Some people have no moral compass.

  4. I feel like IG is THE place for scams. I haven’t really experienced it much here on WP but that could just be my ignorance talking. A few years ago, I wrote a blog post about why I quit MLM’s. Sadly, I used to be a part of one and I was recruited on Facebook. They target people who need money which is ironic considering that people lose money with MLMs. Only a select few actually make money from them.

    1. Yup IG is like MLM central. I have been messaged by so many of them. Like you said they prey on people who need money especially women in their twenties. I have had a couple of bloggers try to recruit me for MLM’s too and some who tried to get my personal information. Maybe that was just my bad experiences but I wanted to warn people just in case. The majority of people in MLM’s lose at least a few hundred to a few thousand dollars which is so sad. It sucks that you went through that but hopefully you didn’t lose too much and got out quickly.

      1. The girl who recruited me doesn’t talk to me anymore, as soon as I quit the MLM. I had to block her mom who kept pestering me. It was awful, and I’m glad I got out when I did. I think the girl who recruited me ended up quitting and joined another MLM. Some people will jump from one MLM to the next promoting this BS lifestyle. If it was so great, then why are they jumping around so much? Why aren’t they retired yet?

        1. Apparently, people in MLM’s are told to cut contact with people who leave. Which is obviously a big red flag. If you guys are all such great friends with one another why don’t you keep being friends even without the MLM. Lol true if you’re making that much money you should live in a mansion and chill not con people into joining your MLM.

          1. She didn’t talk to me after high school and only reached out to me to get me to join her MLM. I didn’t know about these red flags at the time and I didn’t know it was a MLM. They never tell you that their company IS an MLM… why is that? The whole friendship thing is a joke. She wouldn’t even tell me how to claim my commission, so I went several months without getting paid. Clearly she didn’t know what she was doing, or she didn’t care about her “colleagues.”

            1. Wow she sounds awful. Most people are actually told not to mention that they work for an MLM as people tend to know that MLM’s are awful so they say crap like we’re business owners.

              1. You know it’s a sketchy business when the person won’t even disclose this information. You’re better off selling your own handmade products and starting your own business than joining a MLM.

      2. I lost about $4,000 but half of that was the start-up fee. I was dumb and bought the biggest box! Most of the product expired before I was able to sell it all….

        1. That sucks but honestly you’re lucky you got out of it at that point because it could have been a lot worse. I saw a Netflix documentary about MLM’s and people lost thousands. Some people even lose their house, car and everything they own.

          1. I saw a documentary about HerabLife. I wonder if it was the same documentary. I was with a company called Max International. It’s not very well known and it’s a US company.

            1. Yeah that’s the documentary. I haven’t heard of Max International. The ones I hear most about are Arbonne, Monat and Herblife.

              1. Max International isn’t well known. It’s a supplement company. Their products are high quality but super duper expensive. Nobody can afford these astronomical prices. $100 a bottle that lasts 30 days…. Yeah, no thanks! I got out when they told me that I had to buy 2 bottles a month just to maintain PV (personal volume). That’s $200 a month after converting from US to Canadian dollars, plus the $10 shipping fee.

                1. That’s absolutely ridiculous. Why do you have to buy stuff to maintain anything. If you’re a real business owner you wouldn’t be buying your own products. MLM’s are the worst.

                  1. Buying stuff is how MLMs work: the people who join end up buying all of the product to stay afloat and end up with excess product they can’t sell. The only way to make substantial money in MLMs is to recruit people. When I joined, I did not know that they focus more on recruiting people than the product itself. Had I known what I do now, I would have never joined. It’s a pyramid scheme!

                    1. That’s another thing they never tell you. They always say you just have to sell these products but when you join you realise the only way to make money is to recruit people.

                    2. Exactly! All MLMs work like this. If anyone tries to recruit you on IG or other social media platforms, run for the hills!

    1. Thanks! I see that too and I get a bit concerned for them. I saw someone sharing their mobile number and I was like noooo don’t do that.

      1. Ohh for real? What else shouldn’t you share and why? I’m a young blogger 😢and I’m very curious

        1. Pretty much don’t share any confidential information especially your phone number because people can use it to find out where you live. Hope that helps and stay safe out there!

  12. Thank you Pooja. Great post and lots of good advice. I’m three months into my blogging journey and would definitely appreciate more tips from you! You write in such a relatable way – thank you!

  15. Hey pooja !!
I am very new to this platform , and to be honest I found it more interesting to read blogs than creating.😋 You know what ! First few days were difficult for me to understand all these stuffs .but now I am comfortable.😊

      1. Ha ha ! yess it is .🖤

  16. hi Pooja, Thanks for the tips, Would you please help to know why subscriber come with say Allan2501 in a day and in another 2-3 days there comes another subscriber with Allan345. What does that mean and what actions are we to consider, or just ignore..thanks

    1. Happy to help!

Those subscribers sound like they are bots. I talk in more detail about bots and how to deal with bot followers on this post if you want to check it out https://lifesfinewhine.ca/2021/05/25/how-to-increase-your-engagement/

      1. Thanks Pooja, i deleted those subscribers as you suggested. However its so funny that after the removal, i saw the ‘bot’ again come and click ‘like’ on a content..Guess, removing from subscriber list cant really remove future likes!! haha

        1. Lol I guess not but at least it’s not ruining your stats!

  17. Nice tips for new bloggers.

    1. Thank you.

  18. thanks for the tips as a relatively new blogger im learning to be patient and try to stick to a consistent routine!

    1. My pleasure and good luck with that!

  19. Thanks for mentioning MLMs. I feel like those schemes have been preying on people more

    1. Yup they are everywhere these days. The other day someone on YT was talking about how a random couple approached her in a coffee shop and tried to recruit her. So creepy.

      1. Oh wow! Yeah, I mean I have almost fallen for that too, but I was desperate at the time. They shouldn’t be preying on desperate people. The one I fell for was one about starting your business which is what I really want to do anyway, so I fell for it. Big regret there!

        1. Yup I hate how they’re like you’ll be a business owner because that’s so deceitful. You most definitely won’t be a real business owner you’ll just be working for what is essentially a pyramid scheme. They definitely prey on desperate people especially younger women. It’s absolutely horrible.

          1. They also prey on students who have graduated, especially the ones who graduated in the past year or so. F- those guys!

            1. Seriously they just straight up suck. I get that they are victims but why do you have to recruit others and do the same thing to them.

              1. I weep for humanity 😭

  20. These tips and tricks will be handy for both new and old bloggers who want to grow and monetize their blogs🙂

    1. So glad to hear that!

All in due time. It won’t be over night but it will create even more exciting blogs for your audience. Paulstechtalk.com blogger, technology, and just an all around guy.

    1. Yup it’s all about patience!

      1. Have you found that you get some spam comments a lot more than usual now a days? I know I am getting hat from time to time and even the comments don’t look like they are real comments. What do you do about those types of comments?

        1. Yeah I get spam comments all the time. Unfortunately, WordPress doesn’t give us much protection from them. All you can really do is delete them and maybe block their IP address.

  43. Awesome stuff…gotta work on my patience and consistency! Thanks for the wonderful insights.

  44. I just start blogging today..

  86. Thanks for the advices. So helpful for me. I’m a beginner(◍•ᴗ•◍)

  87. I started my first blog a long time ago, and it took me a while to realize how things really work. As you rightly mentioned, many people (me included) get into blogging under the impression that success is going to come fast, and we’re be able to make a living online. It was a hard pill to swallow after 6 months of nothing. But, eventually I started getting results because I was consistent and always trying my best to create awesome content.
Great article. Nothing but the truth.
I would appreciate getting your opinion on my article I wrote recently: Things I wish I knew Before Starting a Blog.

I really appreciate feedback from fellow bloggers, specially skilled like yourself.

    Thank you

    1. Thanks and I’ll check your post out!

  88. Can we earn money from WordPress??

    1. Yes absolutely. Check out my latest post to learn how.

      1. Oo really we can earn from here! Cool

      2. I saw your blog today but there’s no information on how to make money from WordPress?? Can u plz tell me how I can earn from wordpress

        1. I think the best ways to earn money on WP would be through WordAds, sponsored posts and selling a product or service. Hope that helps!

          1. Thank u so much for responding

          2. How do you get a sponsored post?

            1. Most of the time sponsors tend to reach out to sites they are interested in posting on.

  92. Great post! I tend to think of myself as a new blogger, but I’ve been at it for over a year! Ha! Ha! Still feel like there’s so much more to learn! There probably is and I’m just clueless! 😁. I’ll just keep plugging away. I do love to write and that really comes in handy! I post on a three-day-a-week schedule and that works for me. Some weeks I do miss a day, but usually I’m pretty consistent; thank you phone calendar reminders! Yeah. If you’re not on my calendar you don’t exist! The forgettery works better than the remembery these days! 🤭!

    1. Lol I feel like a new blogger a lot too so I totally get that feeling! I think I need to get a calendar I think I’m forgetting too much these days 😂

  93. Another amazing post by you Pooja! The post really helps especially about not giving up and patience because sometime you need to be reminded that everything will be achieved by being patience and keep going 🌸

    1. Thanks so much and I’m so glad this post was helpful!

  94. Very good advice as always. I’ve been blogging for more than six years. The biggest growth for me in engagement and followers happened when I started following other bloggers and commenting on the posts that interest me. For years, I was only interested in writing and wasn’t reading anyone else. I now feel like I’m a part of a community. Also, I’m more consistent. That’s the advice I’d give to new bloggers.

    1. Thanks so much. That’s great advice and whenever someone asks me to help them grow their blog I always tell them just that. Engage with the community, be active on other blogs and interact with the posts you enjoy. That’s the best way to grow.

      1. I agree with you, especially on reading other blogs and commenting 👍.

  95. Really great advice! To add to your point, patience will benefit in many ways. It gives you the chance to find your writing style/voice. I think growing a blog (or anything, really) quickly puts too many eyes on you too early on. The beginning stages allow you to make mistakes with few repercussions. Finding your groove at your own pace gives you space for your readers to grow with you on your journey. I appreciate this post as a person who is new to consistent blogging/writing. 🙂

    1. Thanks and I so agree with that! Having a smaller audience makes the learning experience a lot easier.

  96. Wow ! Such a beautiful and readable post. Easy to access and understand the idea behind blogging in a very short and precise post for beginners.
Thanks for sharing it Pooja ☺️.

    1. Thanks so much ☺️

  98. I’ve heard it’s important to stay consistent. How do you come up with ideas for posts to keep going? I’m writing on TV shows and books I enjoy and I’m not sure what to do in between.

  99. Thank you for this post! I’m getting back into blogging and it’s so much fun. Getting started is always a task but these tips help a lot:)

    1. Thanks and glad this helps! Good luck with your blogging journey 🙂

Thank you Pooja! I am approximately 3 months in and really enjoy blogging. The process is very therapeutic and a good creative outlet. The problem I have is lack of engagement which feed into my insecurities. I do realize consistency and perseverance are key. I plan on continuing to learn (thank you for your advice) and just have fun with it!

    1. Thanks so much. I’m glad the advice has been helpful. I also wanted to let you know that your site isn’t connected to your username and maybe that’s why people aren’t visiting your blog. Because they can’t.

  101. Interesting I’m reading it now.
This blog was published on 3rd aug 2021 and I started on 1st aug 2021. If I know about these things then, It would have been very helpful.
The thing you’ve mentioned are true and helpful. I need to invest more time in being consistent. Sadly, I’m not consistent and I post in every 6th-7th day. I will try to follow a schedule.
    .
The biggest advice I will give to anyone new is, be real and don’t spam. Many bloggers randomly like stuff and expect a follow back, they need to stop doing that if they want proper attention from someone. Random likes will make people dislike you, proper likes/comments will make people remember you.

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, consistency helps so much.
      .
True, spammers can be annoying and leaving genuine comments is so much better.

  102. Thank you so much for sharing! Question for you…my posts are either me researching a topic or sharing information I find. I always include the original link or where to buy the book. I never tag the owners of the link or the authors…thinking it would be a nuisance to them (why would a best selling author care about my post). Thoughts on what I do?

    Thanks so much!

    1. Thank you. That’s an interesting question. I would suggest always tagging them. Even if they are bestsellers this will help them get more backlinks. Which I’m sure they would appreciate.

      1. I’ll try it! Thanks!

  103. I think I was approached once by pyramid schemers, but I couldn’t remember the details. I didn’t pay much attention to it. Thank you for your sweet advice. We all should be careful about this.

    1. I’m glad you ignored them, pyramid schemes are horrid.

  104. Helpful and sound advice, as usual, Pooja.
Also, I like how you point out the safety matters. You are right, this is rarely mentioned.

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, safety is important and not enough people talk about that. The internet is not a very safe place.

  105. Did this get reposted? I’m so confused because it popped up on my notifications.😭

    1. WP re-published it for some reason when I updated it 😒 I don’t know why it does that sometimes 😠

      1. That doesn’t make any sense.😕 But, I’m not surprised it happened. Weird things happened on my site when I tried doing it and made me mad. Whatever. I guess it’s just one of the irritating things that happens on here.😒🙄

        1. It’s so annoying because sometimes things get automatically posted on my Twitter when I update. I have just given up on the glitches because the Happiness Engineers don’t help anyway 😠

          1. That’s frustrating. I don’t understand how software works so I’m just baffled. Is your Twitter attached to your WP? My tumblr is attached to my WP account.

            1. Yes, my twitter is attached to WP but it’s only supposed to post new posts. Not the ones I update. I honestly don’t know what going on and I’ve given up on figuring it out.

  106. I know your advice has helped me!!

    1. Thank you, so happy to hear that!

  107. Ah ha! Thank you, very useful.

    1. Thanks so much!

  108. I really needed to read this today Pooja, thank you so much for sharing these tips ❤️

    1. Thanks so much and happy to share them 😊

  109. Good post Pooja. And you are so right when it comes to scammers. There are so many dishonest people out there trying to pull a fast one on other people. Earlier this summer I was scammed but didn’t fall into the trap completely. By this I mean that they didn’t get any important information or money from me. They were offering me a writing job that almost sounded to good to be true. But I played along for a while just to see for sure. So one tip from me is, if it sounds to good to be true, it’s probably a scam.

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, you have to be really careful because there are so many scammers on the internet. I totally agree, if something sounds too good to be true make sure you do a lot of research on it first because it’s very likely to be a scam.

  110. You always give great advice

    1. Thanks so much.
