How To Balance School And Blogging

School And Blogging

I know a lot of people are back at school and I’ve gotten a lot of messages, emails and comments asking me how I was able to balance university and blogging so I thought I would write an advice post about that topic.

University and school in general can be very demanding and to be honest so can blogging. Blogging sounds like it’s all fun and games until you actually get into it and realise just how difficult blogging can be. It can also be quite time consuming especially if you are someone that writes longer posts that require more research.

I have also noticed over the years that blogging requires a lot of consistency and if you don’t post regularly and consistently most of the time you may see a drastic drop in your traffic and following. Therefore, it is important to try to stick to some sort of blogging schedule that works well with your university schedule as well.

Here are some tips on how you can balance university or school with blogging:

Priorities

When it comes to blogging, whether you are trying to balance blogging with school, work or just life in general, I think it is really important to have your priorities straight. Know what is most important to you and what is least important or necessary.

Personally, unless blogging is something you do full time it shouldn’t be your biggest priority. When it comes to school/university/college your biggest priority should be to do well and enjoy yourself. Blogging consistently is important but having your priorities straight is even more important than that.

Scheduling/Planning

Once you know what your priorities are you can schedule or plan out your days accordingly. I would recommend not making too many changes to your blogging schedule as this can sometimes confuse your audience as well as the WordPress algorithm.

As mentioned above, school should be your biggest priority so make sure you schedule in enough time to get to all your classes as well as complete all your assignments. Especially if you’re in university because the assignments are a lot more time consuming and carry a large percentage of your grade.

Once you’re done scheduling everything for your school or university, see when you have some free time and try to write posts at this time. Even if you aren’t going to post them anytime soon you would rather have a couple of posts written in advance rather than none at all. You can always save them for when you’ll be really busy like when you have exams or assignments due.

Research

As a historian I need to always add that you always need to do your research (seriously, I legally can’t not say that…) whether it’s about your schedule at school or whether it’s about blogging. Look at other bloggers who are also balancing blogging and school and see how they’re doing it. If you’re reading posts like this one you’re already on the right track.

Next, do some research into your courses/classes. How demanding are they? When are your assignments due? When do you have more busy weeks and when do you have a bit more free time? This will help you figure out when you have time to write posts in advance and when you’ll most likely be a little too busy to write posts.

This isn’t exactly research but I also want to add that you should read other blogs and if you find posts that you particularly enjoy you can bookmark them and share/reblog them on days that you’re too busy to schedule your own posts. You can even make it a weekly segment and share a post once a week that you really like. That way you don’t have to come up with a post but are still publishing something and the person who wrote a great post will get access to your audience/readers. It’s a great way to support the community and get some time off blogging.

Take Time Off  To Have Fun

I wanted to end with this tip just to remind all of you students out there that at the end of the day it’s all about having fun, making memories, making friends and having a good experience. Don’t pressure yourself to always post on your blog or always reply to comments or always be active on WordPress. If there are days when you’re busy and have to turn off your comments or not post at all that’s okay too. The important thing is that you’re enjoying yourself as much as you can.

Try new things like new restaurants, or take up a hobby you’ve always wanted to try but never really found the right time to do. Take some classes on art or cooking or whatever you’re interested in. Lots of local places offer this and it can be a lot of fun as well as a great way to meet new people. Join social media and make silly little videos.

Or try something old- this is one I’ve been trying to do more often and it’s been a blast. Do something you enjoyed doing when you were younger but stopped as you got older. I recently started playing old school online games again because I did that a lot with my sister growing up and it brings back a lot of good memories for us. I’ve been playing solitaire a lot and the site I used has so many versions of it that I didn’t even know about. I’ve been playing Mahjong Solitaire since I love Mahjong and I also like word games so I’ve been playing the Word Search. And I love this game called Zuma Ball too.  I have also recently started colouring and drawing again which has been a lot of fun. I’ve been colouring online since it’s just more convenient and I’ve talked about this a lot before but the apps I use are called Colorscapes and Paint.Book.  It all just really brings me back and I can do it in my pjs munching on some snacks!

With everything going on in your life as a student it’s important to have some hobbies you can enjoy in your free time. Otherwise you’re just going to end up burnt out.

Conclusion

I think the most important thing with balancing everything is planning yourself well. And of course don’t forget to have fun as well. Blogging shouldn’t be so stressful that other parts of your life don’t get enough attention. Blogging should be about enjoying yourself. And school too. And life. Seriously- just enjoy yourself and don’t take things way more seriously than necessary. Good luck to all the students out there and hope you’re enjoying yourself!

Are you a student? Have you ever had difficulty balancing school and blogging? What are some tips you would give to students who are struggling to balance school and blogging? If you’re not a student how do you balance blogging with work/life? Let me know in the comments because I always love hearing from you guys.

  1. Balance is good. Though unless course loads have changed, the odd all nighter used to happen. Do University kids still have time for fun? It seems so many things to do, that they must be scheduled very strictly?.

    1. Yeah the odd nighter is definitely still there- I’ve had a couple of those when I have a lot of assignments due. It’s hard to find time to have fun but not impossible. You just need to be careful not to miss any assignments and stuff.

  2. Love your choice of games there!

    1. They’re so fun!!

  3. I am not a student as of yet, but I always set reminders of the days I will write. I always take care of what is important first, then I write, or get ideas of a new site page I want to do. I always find time for myself to enjoy myself. I have played solitaire, and U also have several coloring apps I like. I also draw, so outside of writing, that is what I enjoy. Thank you for sharing valuable information. God bless, and stay safe.

    1. Thank you. Yeah I try to set reminders too so I remember to do my writing along with everything else. It’s good to have hobbies that keep your mind refreshed.

  4. I felt a connect with this blog. Beautifully written 😁

  5. time management is one of the best things someone can learn in school. and nice to read that you’ve gone old school with some of your games…

    1. Yup time management is an absolute necessity especially once you start uni or college. Old school games are always more fun for me!

      1. I agree; nothing like a good game of solitaire!

  6. I really needed this. Thank you so much for this post! I was planning on announcing a blogging break as I’m spending too much time reading blogs and my classes have started. I found this helpful!

    1. I’m so glad you found this helpful and if you need a break from blogging you should definitely take one since school is most important!

  7. When I started blogging three years ago, I named my site davidsdailydose because I intended to post every day. Well, it didn’t take long to realize, that with my work schedule, I wasn’t going to be able to do that! I now post once a week–on the weekends when I have more time. I sometimes envy other bloggers who post multiple times a week, but it’s just not something I can consistently do. I’d rather focus on writing the best content I can and then posting it when I can engage with others.

    1. Yeah posting daily is definitely a lot of work. I promised myself I would post daily this year so that’s what I’ve been doing but I’ll probably slow down a little more next year. It’s definitely all about quality over quantity when it comes to blogging.

  9. I am a teacher and homemaker, you are very right we all need to plan which is more important and of course, maintaining a balance is also necessary. Very well shared thank you ☺🙂💖

  10. Whenever I’m in school, I try not to put too much pressure on myself when it comes to blogging cause when I’m burned out, I think it’s obvious in my posts and my readers can tell. Any free time I get, I try to draft out one or two posts from ideas I had earlier written down in my notes. This has made things easier for me. The only problem is I blog using the mobile app and I can’t seem to schedule posts with it. Whenever I schedule, I still have to be the one to publish it. So that’s a bit of work as I sometimes miss the time by 10-30mins💔

    1. Yeah it’s best not to stress yourself out over posting all the time. It’s okay to do the best you can. I used to have to post manually too so I totally get that struggle.

  11. Balancing school and blogging was quite tough for me back then. Nowadays, I blog in the morning and have the rest of the day for school.

    1. Yeah it’s most difficult at first but over time you learn what works for you.

      1. True.

  12. Those are wonderful advice, which I know I won’t be able to follow since I am so bad at organizing. All I’ve been doing is scrambling to the point that I start to doubt my own existence. How very bad it is. I know I should be more pro-active in organizing, scheduling, tidying up, sorting things out since they are part of our life that we can’t get rid of, but I just don’t feel motivated to do it.

    1. I can be awful at organising too so I definitely understand the struggle. I think it takes a while to get used to it and it can be a very slow process getting to a point where you’re great with scheduling/planning.

  13. I love this post highlighting making your priority on school and having a blogging schedule as well as some fun hobbies Pooja!!! While it’s hard to find the right balance it’s essential! 💕🌹

    1. Thanks! Yeah having your priorities straight is definitely super important and having fun is important too!

      1. You’re so welcome! totally gotta have both! And tomorrow is Fri Yay Funday.., goitta getting cooking some up.. hahahah ❣️🤣

  14. When you start taking blogging as a chore, it becomes boring and feels like a burden. We should write when we want to write. We shouldn’t force ourselves to write.

    1. Yeah I absolutely agree- we shouldn’t try to force it.

  15. I wish it was easy for me to stick to a schedule. But ya your points helped me somewhere to sort stuff out. Although my holidays just began from today but Thank you😭🤍✨

    1. Glad this was helpful and have fun in your holidays!

      1. hehe thank you💕💙✨

  16. Thanks 😊 This was much needed for me.

    1. My pleasure!

  17. I think it is important to know your limits. At times, we overcommit & eventually loose balance between priorities. A useful post👍

    1. Yeah absolutely we should always know when to stop and say no.

  18. Great tips on balancing school and blogging.

  19. Thank you for the reminder to try something old! I’m currently a student and trying to balance blogging. I feel like I’m constantly trying to keep up with trends and stay ahead. It was refreshing to hear someone tell me to go back to my roots to find inspiration. I definitely needed this post! 🙂

    1. I totally get how you feel and it’s honestly very difficult to keep up with trends these days. They are constantly changing. I think it’s fun to do stuff the old school way sometimes!

  20. Hey, a great blog
I read this blog in October 2021 I think, as I see my comment somewhere up there.

I will say this is wise advice that the finest blogger is giving to young (that doesn’t mean you are old), this blog tells about your experience and I know many young new bloggers, who are in college can learn a lot from it.
I want to share with some people who keep asking me things mentioned in this fantastic blog. This will be a great help.
