Love Is Messy

The Jilted Lover, Love Is Messy

I met her when we were in college, and we instantly hit it off. She was the kind of girl everyone liked- funny, sweet, kind, and very charming. One smile from her, and I was hers forever.

We met at my roommate’s party. She was clearly the center of attention. Every guy in the room had their eyes on her, trying their best to impress her. They would bring her drinks, compliment her, talk about how they were going to be millionaires someday. She nodded politely, feigning interest, but I could tell that all she wanted was to be left alone.

That was one of the things about us. I always knew what she was thinking, what she wanted, what she needed. Sometimes I knew even before she did.

I saved her from the situation and we ended up talking in my room the entire night. I don’t know if it was because I was intoxicated or if it was fate but I ended up asking her out and surprisingly she said yes. It was the best date I have ever had. She was perfect, and from that moment, I knew we were going to spend our life together.

The only problem was, girls like her don’t like to settle down. She had a messy past, and I think that’s what made her crave attention. She loved flirting with other people. She would always flirt when she thought I wasn’t around. When she thought I wasn’t looking. But I was around, I was looking.

It always ended the same way. I would confront her, she would yell and eventually, I would crawl back to her because I knew that deep down she loved me. She loved me the same way I loved her. We were meant to be together despite what everyone said.

It had been two years since the first night we met. In fact, it was our second anniversary. She was in her final year, and I had dropped out to pursue other interests. The way she woke up this morning without so much as a mention of our special day told me she had forgotten our anniversary as usual.

She munched on her bagel as she fiddled with her phone. She was typing with a small smile on her face. I knew that smile too well to ask her who she was talking to. I knew she would go out tonight, probably meet him at some club. They would dance together, laugh, get drunk and if he was really lucky he would come home with her.

I knew I had to do something about him, about her behaviour. Tonight was the night I confront her, catch her in the act. Deep down, I knew catching her in the act would be enough to make her see that our love was too strong to throw away like this.

That’s the thing about true love. It’s never perfect, like people in the movies make it seem. True love is complicated, true love brings pain along with it, true love is messy.

That night I waited outside her building and followed her to the club. I waited patiently as she walked out with her latest sleazebag. He had her arms around his waist and they drove home together. I heard them laughing as they stumbled into the elevator, too drunk to see me standing a few feet away from them.

I waited outside the apartment door for about ten minutes before I slowly turned the key and headed in. I was greeted by his shirt lying on the floor and her dress which was laying outside the bedroom door. I turned the knob on the bedroom door and walked in.

They both turned her head in surprise and frantically searched for something to cover up with. “Oh my God, this can’t be happening… I’m so sorry about this, Jeff,” she sobbed. “I can explain everything,” she continued.

“Who is this guy, Sophie?” he asked. “Jeff, let me explain,” she mumbled between sobs.

“And who exactly is Jeff?” I asked, staring at Sophie.

“What do you mean who’s Jeff? JEFF IS MY BOYFRIEND! WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN MY APARTMENT?” Sophie screamed at me. Oh great, this again. I hate it when she acts like this. It’s like she’s in total denial about us. About our love.

“I have a restraining order against you. You’re not supposed to be anywhere near me. How did you even get in here?”

“What the hell is going on here?” Jeff asked, looking bewildered.

“I went on one date with this guy, and he’s been stalking me for years. He won’t leave me alone… he thinks we’re in love”

“WE ARE IN LOVE. WHY WON’T YOU ADMIT THAT?” I yelled.

“I love you, Soph. I just want us to be together forever.”

“That’s it. I’m calling the cops,” said Jeff, getting up.

“Yeah, I wouldn’t…” I told him, pulling up my shirt and revealing my gun. They both looked at me, their expressions changing from anger to fear.

“I told you, Soph,” I whispered. “I told you that if you keep behaving like this you would end up pushing me too far. I’ve had enough,” I continued. “Now I have to clean up the mess you created. I have to do this so we can be together forever- just like I promised we would be,” I told her.

“No… please… I’ll do whatever you want… please…” Sophie begged.

Since it’s Halloween, I was inspired to write a (somewhat) scary story of my own. I hope you guys enjoyed that because I really enjoyed writing it. Let me know what you guys think will happen next in the comments. Do you think Sophie will get away? Do you think her stalker will win?

    1. Glad you enjoyed it!

  12. So interesting and emotional story that reflect heartbreak. I felt for the other guy who is in love with Sophie. I hope he wouldn’t do something crazy to Jeff. Sophie on the other hand toyed with his emotions. She will later regrets her actions. The story got to have a part 2😇. I love reading it and want to know how it ends.

    1. Thanks so much 😊

    1. Thank you so much!

  16. What a brilliant story! A different type of fear here. I really don’t like Sophie’s character. She is such a cheat- so unfaithful and screaming infidelity right from the very beginning. Tbh, I thought this was a personal experience of yours until half way through the story when Jeff asks “Who is this guy” 😉
So so loved it! Had me totally engaged.

    1. Thanks so much- so glad you enjoyed it!

    1. Haha thanks so much!

  22. What an intriguing story. And an unexpected turn of event. So the whole thing is a stalker’s imaginary and unrequited love for a girl who doesn’t love him back. Yes, what will the stalker do next? I remember a story happened in my hometown when I was very young. A young man stalked a girl for a while. Frustrated, he made a bomb and blew up the hair salon she worked in. Luckily, she was not hurt, but two of her coworkers was injured, one very badly.

    1. Wow that’s so scary. I know this story about a guy who was obsessed with my best friends cousin and he brought a gun to their house and threatened to kill himself if she didn’t marry him.

    1. Thanks that’s exactly what I was going for.

  23. Interesting to read from stalker’s pov!

    1. Thank you! I really wanted to explore the otherside too.

  24. This was really good

    1. Thanks so much

  25. Nah, she’s not getting away once the gun is shown, csi scene for sure!

    1. Yeah I don’t think she getting away either 🤔

      1. We shall see! I hope you have part two brewing for us!

        1. I don’t at the moment but maybe in the future 😂

  26. Woah. This is one of the stories that has the best hook I think. Plus the turn of events was shocking and creepy. Really loved it!!!

    1. Wow thanks so much!

  27. Whoa!!! A real ‘love thriller’
    Loved it!!!

    1. Thanks so much!!

      1. You’re welcome

  28. Sicko… even had breakfast with an imaginary her who lives with him… and crazy blind to boot… for all the guys he’s been seeing her with, and thinks she’s flirting with, as been Jeff all along… the two year old key must have been a treasured keepsake… as I said… Sicko…
    🇯🇲🏖️

    1. Yup, he is definitely a real sicko.

  29. All a one night stand leads to is a 30 second awkward cuddle afterwards and if it’s in your bed you have to change the sheets 😂🤦🏽‍♂️

    1. Haha one night stands over relationships? 😂

  30. Thanks for taking time away from your writing to visit my blog!

    1. My pleasure and thanks for visiting mine too!

  31. yaa love is messy but this stalker is beyond that he is just psycho, ending was just bang on .loved it.

  32. […] Love Is Messy […]

  33. Woah. This was seriously good. I love how it built up. I was not expecting that at all. You have a real gift. Keep it up. Can’t wait to see what else you create…also I think that her stalker will kidnap her and overtime she may fall in love with her stalker

    1. Thank you and honestly I think that’s how it would have ended if I had continued to write.

  34. The halloween type !!

    1. Exactly!
