Introduction
I have been very into fashion, makeup and style for quite a while now. I absolutely adore dressing up and going out. I think I particularly enjoy it because there was a time I really didn’t like how I looked and now that I am growing more comfortable in my own skin I am able to enjoy things I couldn’t before.
From personal experience, I think it’s also important for ones mental health to be comfortable with how you look. When we feel confident, it shines through, and we look great. Looking good on the outside makes us feel more confident and happy. Having a style that makes you feel great about the way you look is a huge component in establishing your confidence.
Here, we are going to look at how you can both look good and feel great in your own skin by creating your own style.
What style do you want to be remembered for?
Think of someone whose style you admire. That person most likely has a unique style and exudes self-confidence. A style that people associate with the person. You want to have a unique style that defines you and that you feel confident in.
I am my own experiment. I am my own work of art. – Madonnna
Consider what style you want people to think of when they think of you. Do you want people to think of simple European glamour? Add a few Breton stripes, plenty of monochrome with pops of colour in the form of shoes, classic leather belts and scarves, and you have that style nailed. Want to be quirky? Fun patterned dressed, and brightly coloured tights can make you stand out. However, it is important to make sure that you feel comfortable in your signature style. If you don’t, it defeats the point.
Accessorise, accessorize, accessorize
When it comes to finishing off a look, accessories are essential. The right accessories can make an outfit. The wrong accessories can break an outfit. Accessories really help bring your whole outfit together.
I’ve always thought of accessories as the exclamation point of a woman’s outfit – Michael Kors
Choose wisely. A brightly coloured or patterned scarf will break up an otherwise plain business suit or jeans and t-shirt outfit. A pair of earrings can take a formal daytime look into a sophisticated bar. Thankfully, accessories can also be the cheapest part of a look.
Check your posture
It does not matter how good your outfit looks; if you are slouching or hunched over, it will not look as good as you want it to. Another reason to have good posture is because psychologically, having good posture may actually trick your brain into thinking you are confident and look good. It’s kind of like faking it till you make it. You may feel uncomfortable at first if you’re used to always slouching but soon you’ll get used to it and actually feel strong and confident.
A good stance and posture reflect a proper state of mind – Morihei Ueshiba
Poor posture can age you and make you look anxious and less confident. Stand up straight, push your shoulders back and hold your head high. Be proud of your look and show it off to its very best!
Break the rules
When it comes to fashion, there are lots of rules. But what is the fun of having rules if you can’t break them occasionally? From what I’ve learnt over the years, people are going to judge you no matter what so you may as well look exactly how you want to. If you think something looks good and makes you feel good, go for it.
If you obey all the rules you miss having fun – Katherine Hepburn
Standing out from the crowd can do wonders for your confidence – if you want to dye your hair bright pink, shave it all off, try out hair extensions after reading canadahair reviews or wear completely clashing prints, do it. If it makes you feel good, don’t worry if it breaks the rules.
Conclusion
I have spent a lot of time hating how I look and I have also spent a lot of time improving my relationship with my body. I have posted a few pictures of me throughout the years and I often get comments telling me how I look more comfortable and confident now and that’s a huge compliment because it took a lot to get there.
