As you may or may not know, my family and I absolutely love Korean dramas. We’ve been watching them for years now and recently we started watching Business Proposal. It’s a Netflix K-drama and stars Ahn Hyo-Seop, Kim Se-Jeong, Kim Min-Kyu, Seol In-A as the main characters of the show.

Shin Ha-Ri (Kim Se-Jeong) is a single woman and works for a company. She has a male friend and she has held a crush on him for a long time, but she learns that her friend has a girlfriend. Shin Ha-Ri feels sad and decides to meet her friend Jin Young-Seo, who is a daughter of a chaebol family. Jin Young-Seo then asks Shin Ha-Ri to take her place in a blind date and even offers some money for her time. Shin Ha-Ri accepts her friend’s offer. She goes out on the blind date as Jin Young-Seo, while having the intention to get rejected by her date. When she sees her blind date, Shin Ha-Ri is dumbfounded. Her blind date is Kang Tae-Moo (Ahn Hyo-Seop). He is the CEO of the company where she works.
Kang Tae-Moo is the CEO of a company that his grandfather founded. One day, his grandfather informed him of an upcoming blind date that he set up for him. Kang Tae-Moo is a workaholic and he is annoyed that his grandfather sets up blind dates for him. He decides to marry the next woman whom he meets at a blind date, so he won’t be disturbed from his work anymore. That woman is Shin Ha-Ri, but pretending to be Jin Young-Seo.
On the following day, Shin Ha-Ri receives a phone call from Kang Tae-Moo. He asks her to marry him.
My Review:
Plot
I enjoyed the plot but only to an extent. The whole rich, spoilt, bad tempered guy falls for sweet, regular girl isn’t new when it comes to K-dramas but at the same time it’s a storyline I always enjoy. Although the plot wasn’t that new or unique I still found myself very interested and waiting for the next episode.
The one things I did not enjoy about the plot was how Tae-Moo did not recognise Ha-Ri even after she acted super weird and suspicious around him. I get that she wore a wig and a lot of makeup when she pretended to be Young-Seo but it was still quite obvious it was her. Especially when she was wearing an eye patch. It’s kind of weird that his employee who always acts suspicious around him also hurt her eye exactly when the girl he’s pretending to date did as well. It’s just hard to believe that someone who was supposed to be as smart as Tae-Moo didn’t know it was Ha-Ri.
Apart from that plot hole and a couple of other minor plot holes I really enjoyed the rest of the plot. I think it was easy to ignore the plot holes since it was a comedy and I was just happy to get a laugh from the crazy situations that came up.
I liked how even though Young-Seo was a little spoilt she was genuinely a nice person. In a lot of K-dramas I’ve seen the best friend that’s rich generally turns out to be mean or evil and tries to steal the guy from the main character. But on this show there were no major love triangles and I actually loved that and found it refreshing. Tae-Moo and Ha-Ri both feel in love and so did Young-Seo and Sung-hoon. They all had someone and no one was left heartbroken or alone at the end.
There were also no particular sad parts in the middle like there usually are where they breakup or something like that. The story was very straightforward and simple. If that’s something you like (I really did!) I would absolutely recommend this show.
Characters
I really loved the characters. Let’s start with Tae-Moo and Ha-Ri since they are the main ones. I found Tae-Moo’s character to be the perfect amount of sweet but damaged. He has personal issues that made him into a cold workaholic but he was also kind, generous and caring. He was someone you could root for. Ha-Ri, unlike Tae-Moo, was much more open with her emotions and also a very kind and sweet person. She was a good friend, great employee and wonderful daughter/sister. She was also someone whose character you could love and get behind.
Young-Seo and Sung-Hoon were close friends of the main characters who happened to bump into each other and have a love at first sight kind of situation. I really loved both characters and I’m so glad they got together. I think Sung-Hoon’s character was perfect for Young-Seo. Young-Seo’s character was a little spoilt but very sweet. She also had issues of her own stemming from the fact that her parents were divorced and her mother leaving as a consequence. Sung-Hoon on the other hand grew up in an orphanage until Tae-Moo’s family adopted him and so he was very put together and sort of a perfectionist- very unlike Young-Seo. They were both super loveable characters and I was definitely rooting for them to get together the whole time!
The other side characters were great too. They were so funny and amusing like Tae-Moo’s grandfather or Young-Seo’s weird cousin. They really kept the storyline fun to watch and gave us comedic relief when it was needed. I don’t think any of them were particularly unlikeable except Young-Seo’s dad.
Overall
Overall, I really enjoyed the show. Yes, there were definitely some issues with the plot but honestly I didn’t really mind them too much. Both my sister and parents liked it too. If you are looking for a K-drama that is lighthearted and funny, I would definitely recommend this one.
I will say, however, that I didn’t love the last episode. I feel like it was quite anticlimactic after all that build up. I wanted a bit more but I heard there may be a season two which is why they may have left some loose ends. Still, they could have put a bit more effort into it to make it more satisfying.
