Business Proposal Review

Disclaimer: May contain spoilers.

As you may or may not know, my family and I absolutely love Korean dramas. We’ve been watching them for years now and recently we started watching Business Proposal. It’s a Netflix K-drama and stars Ahn Hyo-Seop, Kim Se-Jeong, Kim Min-Kyu, Seol In-A as the main characters of the show.

Shin Ha-Ri (Kim Se-Jeong) is a single woman and works for a company. She has a male friend and she has held a crush on him for a long time, but she learns that her friend has a girlfriend. Shin Ha-Ri feels sad and decides to meet her friend Jin Young-Seo, who is a daughter of a chaebol family. Jin Young-Seo then asks Shin Ha-Ri to take her place in a blind date and even offers some money for her time. Shin Ha-Ri accepts her friend’s offer. She goes out on the blind date as Jin Young-Seo, while having the intention to get rejected by her date. When she sees her blind date, Shin Ha-Ri is dumbfounded. Her blind date is Kang Tae-Moo (Ahn Hyo-Seop). He is the CEO of the company where she works.

Kang Tae-Moo is the CEO of a company that his grandfather founded. One day, his grandfather informed him of an upcoming blind date that he set up for him. Kang Tae-Moo is a workaholic and he is annoyed that his grandfather sets up blind dates for him. He decides to marry the next woman whom he meets at a blind date, so he won’t be disturbed from his work anymore. That woman is Shin Ha-Ri, but pretending to be Jin Young-Seo.

On the following day, Shin Ha-Ri receives a phone call from Kang Tae-Moo. He asks her to marry him.

My Review:

Plot

I enjoyed the plot but only to an extent. The whole rich, spoilt, bad tempered guy falls for sweet, regular girl isn’t new when it comes to K-dramas but at the same time it’s a storyline I always enjoy. Although the plot wasn’t that new or unique I still found myself very interested and waiting for the next episode.

The one things I did not enjoy about the plot was how Tae-Moo did not recognise Ha-Ri even after she acted super weird and suspicious around him. I get that she wore a wig and a lot of makeup when she pretended to be Young-Seo but it was still quite obvious it was her. Especially when she was wearing an eye patch. It’s kind of weird that his employee who always acts suspicious around him also hurt her eye exactly when the girl he’s pretending to date did as well. It’s just hard to believe that someone who was supposed to be as smart as Tae-Moo didn’t know it was Ha-Ri.

Apart from that plot hole and a couple of other minor plot holes I really enjoyed the rest of the plot. I think it was easy to ignore the plot holes since it was a comedy and I was just happy to get a laugh from the crazy situations that came up.

I liked how even though Young-Seo was a little spoilt she was genuinely a nice person. In a lot of K-dramas I’ve seen the best friend that’s rich generally turns out to be mean or evil and tries to steal the guy from the main character. But on this show there were no major love triangles and I actually loved that and found it refreshing. Tae-Moo and Ha-Ri both feel in love and so did Young-Seo and Sung-hoon. They all had someone and no one was left heartbroken or alone at the end.

There were also no particular sad parts in the middle like there usually are where they breakup or something like that. The story was very straightforward and simple. If that’s something you like (I really did!) I would absolutely recommend this show.

Characters

I really loved the characters. Let’s start with Tae-Moo and Ha-Ri since they are the main ones. I found Tae-Moo’s character to be the perfect amount of sweet but damaged. He has personal issues that made him into a cold workaholic but he was also kind, generous and caring. He was someone you could root for. Ha-Ri, unlike Tae-Moo, was much more open with her emotions and also a very kind and sweet person. She was a good friend, great employee and wonderful daughter/sister. She was also someone whose character you could love and get behind.

Young-Seo and Sung-Hoon were close friends of the main characters who happened to bump into each other and have a love at first sight kind of situation. I really loved both characters and I’m so glad they got together. I think Sung-Hoon’s character was perfect for Young-Seo. Young-Seo’s character was a little spoilt but very sweet. She also had issues of her own stemming from the fact that her parents were divorced and her mother leaving as a consequence. Sung-Hoon on the other hand grew up in an orphanage until Tae-Moo’s family adopted him and so he was very put together and sort of a perfectionist- very unlike Young-Seo. They were both super loveable characters and I was definitely rooting for them to get together the whole time!

The other side characters were great too. They were so funny and amusing like Tae-Moo’s grandfather or Young-Seo’s weird cousin. They really kept the storyline fun to watch and gave us comedic relief when it was needed. I don’t think any of them were particularly unlikeable except Young-Seo’s dad.

Overall

Overall, I really enjoyed the show. Yes, there were definitely some issues with the plot but honestly I didn’t really mind them too much. Both my sister and parents liked it too. If you are looking for a K-drama that is lighthearted and funny, I would definitely recommend this one.

I will say, however, that I didn’t love the last episode. I feel like it was quite anticlimactic after all that build up. I wanted a bit more but I heard there may be a season two which is why they may have left some loose ends. Still, they could have put a bit more effort into it to make it more satisfying.

  1. If he was a workaholic, he might not have noticed her at work😉 There is also they read the script….silly answer I give with holes the plots. I get my silly drama watching soap operas 😉. Though sometimes I swear I just have to listen😝

    1. Haha well he was a workaholic to an extent 😂 I like soap operas too but I get too sucked into them so I stopped watching 😜

  2. That does sound like an enjoyable show! I felt like I was watching it while you were talking about it!

    1. It’s so fun! I really loved it minus the last episode!

  3. As a viewer of Business Proposal, I enjoyed your review! 😃 I also believe the ending of the show could’ve been better…

    1. Thanks and yeah the ending could have definitely been better!

  4. I’m actually watching the show right now- it’s my first K-drama, and I am rather enjoying it, but I have to say, it’s very dramatic!
    Loved reading your review Pooja!

    1. Oh that’s great! Lol yeah Kdramas can be very dramatic but you’ll get used to it 🤣

  5. I watched this show. A typical k-drama – tbh, nothing new in the plot. Being a K-drama (and k-pop) fan from 2011, I pretty well can guess the story by watching just an episode or two. I absolutely loved Young-Seo and Sung-Hoon.
20 year old me (in the past), just loved all k-dramas. 31 year old me now, loves k-drama that stands different(or odd) from the remaining :). “Twenty-five, Twenty-one” is one such drama. I would recommend it for you. If you already did, then I will be eagerly waiting for your review 🙂
Oh and by the way, do you love K-POP?

    1. I haven’t seen that one yet but thank you for the recommendation I’ll check it out! No weirdly enough I never got into Kpop but my sister loves it so much. What about you?

      1. I lovvveeee Kpop.

        1. My sister is obsessed with it!

  6. I am currently watching Business Proposal but stopped. I can go back anytime anyway. If a series gets boring, that is what I do.

I have several series that I haven’t finished yet. It’s either it’s too good or too bad to continue. For the good ones, I have to brace myself haha and for the bad ones, I have to take a break.

    1. Fhat makes sense sometimes we need a break to savour the good shows and to take some time away from the bad ones.

  7. Love K drama so much that I can give up eating and sleeping and working just to watch it. This is why I have to stay away from it. It’s like catnip for a cat. LOL. And you point out the part that I don’t like about K drama–it is too much glorification of a hierarchical society, which is a staple to almost all Asian dramas. Unfortunately throughout history, Koreans have to live with neighbors so much bigger and stronger than themselves–adding on top of the usual suspects, there are also Manchurians and my ancestor Mongolians. For this reason, they have to keep a strict society that is easier to organize in time of emergency. And they did and they fought so bravely. However a hierarchical society has its toll on people. And it is said a small business owner can hardly live above the poverty line and a girl has to find somebody working for big companies like Sumsung or to find somebody with a background. Otherwise it is not a good match for her. Hope inequality will die and die a thousand death and real good system of society will prevail. But this is too much to hope for.

  8. Yea! I love Korean movies too

    1. That’s great!

  9. […] and I think I was a little distracted while scheduling the post. Lesson learnt- don’t watch K-dramas in the background while scheduling posts. These things occasionally happen I guess. So, thanks to […]

  10. Definitely loved seeing Business Proposal! And I like how you reviewed the series. My favorite character sets were Ha-Ri and Young Seo and also Tae-Moo and Sung-Hoo because friendship dynamics (between women) can be funny. It was great to see them handle their issues about the blind date/ budding relationship and come out strong.

    1. Yeah I absolutely agree. The friendships made the show more fun to watch especially between the women since they were both from such different backgrounds.

  11. After a disgruntled employee quits his job, his former boss comes up with a plan to get him back. He assigns the employee to be the new office temp and tells him that the position is temporary, but that he can keep it if he can keep up the good work. However, the employee quickly realizes that this is not just a job, but a way for his former boss to control him. The employee begins to plot ways to get rid of his boss and succeed in the position.
