How To Make Your First $1000 Online

Making Money Online

As many of you may know, I recently started working full-time as a freelancer and it has been an incredible journey. It has also been a very eye-opening journey. I think I’ve learnt a lot more about what it takes to work online, how to make the best of it and more.

I know a lot of bloggers tend to blog because it’s such a wonderful creative outlet and I think WordPress can be a fantastic place to share your content with a supportive audience. However, I know that a lot of bloggers out there would also like to make some money off blogging. I have gotten a pretty large number of emails, DM’s and comments asking me about that very topic.

Although I do have another post about How To Make Money Online and one about How To Make Money Blogging, I thought I would write another post about making money online since these posts are older. I wrote them before I started working as a freelancer and I think I have learnt a lot more about working online now so I have more wisdom to impart (not in general just with this topic…)

It has been a very long time since I made my first $1000 online and it was seriously exciting. I created my blog as an outlet and never thought I would make any money off it, let alone work online full-time. Although as someone majoring in history which has like zero work opportunities because everyone I know so much about is dead I should have seen it coming. I was so excited and even saved some for my tattoos which I then ended up getting years later but that’s a story for another day.

I made my first thousand dollars when I had significantly less followers, no idea what SEO even was, did not blog regularly at all, had no niche and had much less traffic coming in. The reason I’m telling you this is because I know a lot of people think it’s not possible to make money online unless you have a huge following or are really good with internet stuff but that’s just not true.

The tips I’m going to share can work for anyone regardless of how many followers you have, how often you post content, your niche etc. So without anymore chitchat, here are some tips on how you can make your first $1000 online:

Research

When it come to making money online I cannot emphasise enough just how important doing your research is. If you don’t pick up anything else from this post and simply scroll through please pick up this one thing- RESEARCH!

If you know your niche and are set on it, make sure you do some research about that niche or perhaps niches if you plan on creating content relating to multiple niches. Whether you’re a blogger or do social media, look at content created by others for the same niche, look at more popular content creators in your niche and look at what type of content they post, who their sponsors are, what tags they use and more.

Don’t copy the content they make or even their style in any way. This just makes you look like a fraud. Instead learn from them and create your own style and voice from what you have learnt.

More importantly, reach out to the people you have seen sponsoring people that produce similar content and simply ask them if they would be open to working with you as well. Some will say no but some will also say yes! If they say no, tell them to keep you in mind if they are ever looking for more content creators to work with. Most sponsors do look for content creators to work with on a regular basis and this is a great way to get your name out there. With so many content creators these days, you need to do whatever it takes to get your name out there.

If you’re concerned that you have too few followers for sponsors to take you seriously, just remember that micro-influencers are a thing now.

Don’t Wait

This tip ties in with the last one. I always tell anyone that asks me about making money online not to wait for work to come to you but to actively seek it out. Like I mentioned earlier, there are literally thousands of other content creators out there. Some bigger than you and some smaller.

There are so many content creators and only so many brands/services/sponsors that want to work with content creators. You need to get your name to them and make sure that as many potential sponsors as possible know who you are whether you create content on your blog, social media, other platforms or just on all platforms.

First, you can do your research and reach out to sponsors who you see working with people in your niche like I mentioned earlier. Other than that, there are also some fantastic platforms out there that help connect content creators with people looking to work with these creators, Some examples are HashtagPaid and Afluencer.

Other than these platforms, you can also join things like Fiverr or Upwork where you can also meet potential clients. A benefit of these platforms is that you can offer specific services and set your own price.

I have been able to work with a number of wonderful clients, sponsors and even repeat clients/sponsors thanks to wonderful platforms like these. They are incredibly helpful especially when you are starting our and don’t have too many followers yet.

Know Your Worth

This is a big one for me because I have seen so many content creators being screwed over by brands/sponsors/clients. A lot of times, people will lowball you if you seem as though you don’t know too much about how much people are generally paid on average for certain things. They may even try to get you to do something for free that other people are getting paid to do.

For example, I am sure some of you have gotten emails asking for you to add a link to an existing post or use an infographic on your post or post a guest post they’re giving you for free, you just need to add a do-follow link for them on that post. All those are people trying to get you to give them backlinks for free when people out there are getting paid a good amount to add backlinks. Don’t be afraid to charge people for stuff like that (if you want).

Produce High Quality Content

The last tip is simple. Produce high quality content that people would be willing to pay for. It doesn’t matter if you publish something once a day or once a month. As long as it’s good quality, SEO friendly and something people would want to sponsor/buy you will be able to make money off your content. Even if not right now, you’ll be able to make money in the future when you have made more of a name for yourself. The quality of the content you put out always matters and it’s something people definitely take into consideration before deciding to work with you.

Conclusion

I know some of you probably expected me to include affiliate marketing on this list but truth be told I find affiliate marketing somewhat annoying. Firstly, you need a good amount of followers and traffic to make decent money for most affiliate programs. And even if you do, you are spending some much time and effort just so you can get a VERY LOW percentage of the profit? That feels like exploitation to me. If that’s your thing, that’s great, I’m just not a fan myself.

I have a lot more tips for making money online but I didn’t want this post to get crazy long. If you’re interested in me sharing more tips on this topic please let me know in the comments below so that I know whether to share more tips in the future. If people aren’t that interested I’ll just keep my tips to myself lol!

  1. Your point about backlinks is interesting Pooja, because I’ve been had by that one before. You see I’m a nice person, so I was just over the moon to work with somebody who seemingly had a bigger name than me. Well maybe, but not so nice as to keep it for free! It’s on my to-do list to abolish that one tomorrow. If they want it back, there’s a charge 😉

    1. Good for you! Being nice is a good thing but don’t let people take advantage of it. If you’re doing something like that for someone they better be paying you.

      1. See that’s my problem, my first ever jobs were in charity shops with my Nan so I’m used to giving without expecting back, and hence. The problem with that is that people will take and take without giving anything in return, as you quite rightly say. I’ve been learning about setting firmer boundaries lately, and with a lot of people. It’s still a work in progress, but it’s there!

        1. I’m glad you’re learning to set boundaries. I have a hard time with boundaries too but they’re necessary.

          1. Oh yes, it feels very alien though when you just want to get on with everyone lol.

            1. I know, it’s quite uncomfortable especially at first.

  2. Interesting. I may never make money. I write what interests me. Add links to stuff that support my arguments. If I find a sponsor it would be cool. Sorry having weather complications so not sure that was going anywhere, but at least you know I’m paying attention 😉

    1. I hope you find a sponsor that wants to work with you for the content you have. That would definitely be cool.

Sorry about the weather. Is it too hot right now cos of summer?

      1. Thanks. This is one of our least warm summers. I can get atmospheric pressure headaches before bad weather. I kind of get to know about incoming storms ahead of time…so can confirm the weather reports sometimes 😀

        1. Haha that’s kind of annoying but also cool that you know the weather ahead of it happening at least with storms.

          1. Useful, though painful.

  4. Thank you. I’m putting this post into my notes folder in my phone, so I can refer back to it.

    1. Oh great. I really hope you find it helpful.

  5. Such an interesting topic, I usually feel afraid to take the risk and work through online. Due to those hackers or spammers that may risk your financial bank account getting stolen. I may.. be old fashion since I am in early 30s. I still feel safe working physically at the company rather then online.

But through time, I did tried earning money online and I tried it through dropshipping a few products from different companies.. and slowly got promoted into an Agent. Still afraid.. of getting scammed but.. during this era with people getting jobless due to to the unexpected covid 19 lockdown and so on.. Sometimes, even taking risks may be a thing I am afraid about but.. not getting a stable financial income is more terrifying! Everything needs money this days.. with the country itself raising up the prices of products is even.. more burdensome.

    1. Oh I see. Yes, working online does come with its risks but if you are careful it’s not too bad or too dangerous.

Yes, prices are rising everywhere it’s good to have a steady income and even a passive income along with your regular pay check if possible.

      1. I am glad you think the same way too. Thank you so much for giving out your opinion & for stopping by!

        1. My pleasure!

  6. I always wanted to ask you all this, but you have written a very useful blog.
I’m so glad to read it.
I’m saving it for future reference.
    Really thankful to you

    1. Oh good, I’m glad this post was helpful then. Happy to share the information.

  7. I am not in for the money, yet. I feel I didn’t earn my stripes to do so. But your tips were really helpful. Please let them keep coming. Thanks for sharing and have a nice day!

    1. I’m glad these tips were still helpful. Have a nice day too!

  8. I definitely resonate with a lot of the other bloggers… wherein I don’t blog to earn money. But what people don’t realise is that you can get paid for writing what you are already writing. I’ve had the opportunity to work with a few brands (less than 5 as of now) but nit’s always been for content I was anyways working on..so I just got paid for posting my own content. I think for bloggers like me, it’s about finding the right kind of work that resonates with our blog, so that it doesn’t feel forced. Love the post, thanks for sharing this valuable information with us less informed. ☺️
PS: affiliate marketing sucks! I was recently telling a blogger friend about how I joined Amazon’s affiliate program one year back and I still haven’t made the minimum for a payout despite managing to get decent sales.

    1. Yeah, the majority of money I’ve made blogging is from working with people on posts I’ve already made or something I was already working on.
Lol so glad you agree with the affiliate marketing thing! It’s honestly like you’re working for them in sales for significantly less money than you should get paid. It’s sooo not worth it!

  9. […] sad. I am always in awe of bloggers who reply to the 100s of comments they get on their posts (eg: Pooja – how do you do […]

  10. This post was so informative; thank you. I struggle to even define my niche (small things?). I try to be consistent but small things are endless. It would be great to make money, but I can’t seem to find my target audience (maybe that’s bc there isn’t one 🙂 ) But I love the blog so much that I do it for fun. I did start teaching online over the past few years and just now got an enrollment on another site, so maybe that’s another avenue bloggers can take to earn…

    1. I’m glad this was informative. Finding just one niche is certainly a struggle. I haven’t found a niche after years of blogging haha. Blogging for fun is always fun.
That’s so interesting. Teaching online isn’t something I’ve thought about as a way for bloggers to make money so that’s new information for me.

  11. I’ve recently started thinking about doing free lancing work but have zero idea where to begin. So this is quite helpful for me.

    1. So glad this was helpful and good luck with freelancing.

      1. Thank you 🙂

        1. You’re very welcome

  12. Interesting Post ☺️

    1. Thank you ☺️

  13. Thank you for sharing this Pooja. In your opinion is it best to stick with one particular area for your blog?

    1. My pleasure. It really depends on the quality of your content more than anything. I think it’s totally fine to have a multi-niche blog because in my experience it opens your blog up to more diverse traffic and sponsors. The more you write about the more people you attract to your site. At the same time having one niche is great because it gets easier to the top of that niche instead of fighting for a space in multiple niches. I hope that makes sense and helps. I have a post coming up on this topic soon though!

      1. Perfect sense!!! Thank you 🙏🏽

        1. You’re totally welcome!

  14. Very informative, Pooja. I’m not sure I’m ready to be in this field yet,but you’ve definitely given me ideas for whenever I’m ready. Thank you so much for this, I’ve been looking for something like it for a while now 🙂

    1. Thanks so much. I hope you find the post useful in the future if you ever decide to work online.

      1. I definitely will. 🙂

  15. Good for you Pooja. I’m thrilled for you and this is very informative. It’s so great to hear about your success. I know how hard/smart you work and you definitely deserve it. You have lots to teach others to achieve their goals as well 😘👏👏👏👏

    1. Thank you so much and I really hope this helps others going in a similar direction! Working online isn’t easy but it also has its perks 🤗

  16. Awesome post Pooja, of course you know I’m interested.

    1. Thanks so much and I hope you found it helpful.

      1. It is as always, though I may need some more.

  17. This is so informative, thank you! Also, thanks for the heads up about exploitation

    1. Glad it was informative! Of course, it’s our job to protect others from being exploited.

  18. High Quality content part is impressive and intellectual.

    1. Thank you so much.

  19. Thanks for the write up. I always have an issue on knowing my worth, but it’s getting a lot better!

    1. Happy to share it and I’m glad you’re getting better at that!

  20. “Although as someone majoring in history which has like zero work opportunities because everyone I know so much about is dead I should have seen it coming.” You just made my day here, I can relate so hard when I think about my studies vs what I do now! 😂

  21. This was such a great post! I think that getting to know your worth is so important. At the beginning, when you get someone that wants to work with you is such a surprise and do everything for pennies, but completely agree! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thanks so much! Yeah that’s exactly it. You’re so happy someone wants to work with you that you forget you should be getting paid a fair amount.

  22. Helpful post, agreed to all points mentioned💕

    1. Thanks so much 🤗
