Blogging Advice You Should Ignore

Blogging Advice You Should Ignore

Blogging Advice You Should Ignore

Today, I wanted to share blogging advice you should ignore. I have been blogging for a long time, since 2015 actually, and over the years I have come across all kind of blogging advice. Like most new bloggers, when I started blogging, I wanted too grow my blog and so I turned to Google and read some articles on blogging and how to grow your blog. I also looked at some other articles on using the features effectively and more.

To be fair, a lot of this advice was extremely helpful. Eventually, it helped me learn how to use the features WP offers properly, it taught me about SEO and the algorithm and much more. I’m not trying to discourage anyone from looking at blogging advice on this post because for the most part it is quite helpful.

However, I also came across some advice that I thought was not the best idea and should probably not be taken into account by bloggers. Some of this advice was either a scam, unethical or just plain stupid. I wanted to share some advice that I have come across frequently that I think bloggers should disregard. So, here is some blogging advice you should ignore:

Quantity Over Quality

Blogging Advice You Should Ignore

I have read a couple of advice posts that have advised bloggers to post content as often as possible. Some even say post as many times a day as you possibly can. This is a somewhat unethical strategy that a number of people use not only when blogging but also on social media.

At first, this strategy makes some sense. Statistically, if you think about it, the more you post the more traffic you’ll get and the higher your chances will be that one of your posts will blow up since you are posting so many. You’ll also get more followers due to spamming the system.

Now, here’s the problem with this strategy. Yes, it may work for a bit and you may see that you get more traffic and followers the more you post. However, overtime you will notice that this number will become stagnant because there is only so far spamming the system will get you.

Once the algorithm realises what you are doing, it will stop pushing out. your posts and eventually may even categorise you as a spammer which means you will see a huge drop in numbers. Furthermore, a lot of the followers you get will be spam followers and not actual followers. You may instead end up losing actual followers because of posting too often.

Another thing is, you may also end up creating a bunch of great content that no one actually reads because you are just posting too much out there and no one has the time to go through those many posts. You may just end up wasting your content.

What I have found to be the best strategy when it comes to blogging is to create quality content and post when you can. Don’t feel forced to post too many times a day because the quality of your content will probably end up suffering.

If you put out quality content, your blog will automatically grow even if you don’t post very often. Having a schedule does help a lot especially if you don’t post daily. For me, it’s all about quality over quantity. Post content you are satisfied with and your readers will find you.

You Will Succeed Overnight If You…

Ben Stiller Success GIF

I have seen this going around and it annoys me to no end. I get a little irritated when things are very clickbait-y as it is. I’m sure we have all seen certain advice posts or articles that claim that they have the “secret” to growing your site overnight. That you can get millions of followers with just this one trick. Or pretty much something clickbait-y like that.

Related Post: How To Grow Your Blog In A Week

We have all clicked one of these posts hoping to learn something new about blogging or even social media but it just turns out to be a sponsored post trying to sell you something or a post created by the writer to promote some course or perhaps service/product they are offering.

I have no problem with sponsored posts or using your platform to sell your products or services. You may have noticed that I do that too. It’s a great way to get clients and make an income. That’s not what annoys me about these types of advice posts.

What annoys me is when the post is pretty obviously a scam of some sort or offers no actual information to the reader and just pushes the product or service or course in their face as the only way to grow their blog. When I write my posts,

I would highly recommend not falling for such traps especially if they seem like a scam. Because they may just be. If they are offering a service or product that may be useful to you, that’s great but don’t feel like you have no other choice when it comes to growing your blog. There are plenty of ways to do if for free. Yes, it may be easier and faster to grow it if you can afford to pay for certain services and products but that’s not possible for everyone and that’s okay too.

It Is An Easy Form Of Passive Income

Money Reaction GIF

Don’t get me wrong, blogging is a fantastic way to make some extra income. And it’s even something you can eventually pursue full-time if that’s what you are looking for. It’s a great alternative to a traditional nine to five job and gives you a lot more freedom to work at your time.

However, it always irritates me when people say it’s an easy form of passive income or that it’s easy to make some money blogging even while you’re working another job or studying.

The truth is, making money from blogging or on your blog takes a lot of time and effort. In fact, I would say it takes much more time and effort than most people realise. It’s not just passive income you can make while you sleep.

For example, I have heard so much about affiliate marketing and how you can make thousands doing nothing at all. Yeah, that’s not true. For you to make even a hundred dollars from affiliate marketing you need to have thousands of views a day. Because only a very small percentage of your readers will actually click on the Ad. And even fewer will actually use that link to purchase something. To have thousands of daily views you need to work your butt off creating a SEO friendly, high quality site. It takes so much time and energy to be able to do that. Only to be exploited and make a super tiny percentage of the money from each sale.

Blogging is a great way to make some income but don’t get it twisted. It’s not easy or fast.

Conclusion

So, that is some blogging advice you should ignore. I really hope this was helpful and I would recommend always thinking things through before listening to any advice you read online. Except mine, I am always right and my blogging advice is always on point. Seriously, always.

  1. Very informative and well-written post.
    Thank you.
    Cheers,
    –Lance

    1. Thank you so much, Lance.

  2. Haha, great post!

    1. Thank you! BTW, just wanted to let you know that your profile doesn’t link to your site. I was trying to get to it but it just shows an error message. I found your site by searching for it but just thought I should let you know.

      1. Oh goodness, that’s so strange! Do you mean my profile through Gravatar or the one that displays in the comments section in the WordPress dashboard? I think my Gravatar profile works okay, but I had a different site on WordPress before. And for some reason, I can’t seem to figure out how to change the site to display my blog in the dashboard section instead of display the old site (it doesn’t even exist anymore). Do you know how to fix that?

        1. Yeah it’s the one in the comments section that doesn’t direct to your blog. I think you have to go to your Profile>Account Settings>Web Address and then change it there. I had the same issue some time ago.

          1. Ohhh, I just figured it out! Does it show up fine now?

            1. Yup it’s leading to your blog now!

              1. Awesome! Thanks for confirming!

                1. No worries, glad you figured it out!

          2. Okay… Is “Account Settings” the same as “General Settings”? Otherwise, I’m not quite sure where I can find “Account Settings”…

            1. I think you fixed it because your comment leads to your site now!

  3. Thank you for your advice, both serious and humorous. 🙂

    1. Thank you so much.

  4. As bad is every one ‘offering’ to get you noticed…apparently they are totally interested until they find you have $0 budget…then it quiets down fast. 😁

    1. Lol so true, they stop caring the moment they realise they can’t make any money off you.

      1. Guess one of the benefits of being fixed income.

  5. […] blogger friend, Pooja, wrote this post today: “BLOGGING ADVICE YOU SHOULD IGNORE“. If your blog is important to you, check out her […]

  6. Great advice and great post, but I already knew you were the blogging goddess, and your advice was always on point. I was looking at your services yesterday and have some questions I will be in touch.

    1. Haha thanks so much. Sure, feel free to reach out.

  7. Great advise Pooja. I’m very new to this and I agree, there’s no get rich quick going on with blogging.
    Great post 😊

    1. Thanks and I’m glad you’re learning that early on. Once we realise blogging is more of a longterm thing than a get rick quick thing we end up enjoying it more and aren’t disappointed when we don’t see instant results. 😄

  8. Good advice with a twist! There’s so much blogging advice out there that it’s hard to know what actually works. People want quick results with the least amount of effort. Nothing worth it in life is easy! I enjoyed reading this post 🙂

    1. Thank you! I agree, there is just so much advice out there it’s hard to filter out the bad stuff. People always want instant results but like you said life doesn’t work like that. It takes hard work to succeed no matter what you do.

  9. I definitely agree and appreciate it.
    It’s indeed quality over quantity.
Tbh, writing a blog is very hard. I have to give a lot of time to make it perfect. I have to read multiple blogs/articles/videos to make my blog relevant. This is why I can only manage 1 blog each week. Sometimes it could be 2, If there’s any specific day. Then making images takes time too (I won’t say I’m proficient in them). 🙂
Blogging could be a good money, but yes we need to work hard in that constantly. I mean, you are working laboriously from so many years, that’s when you are getting toos gigs, right? 😁

    1. Yeah totally. It takes so much time and effort to create a post and then you need to be active to make sure that post succeeds which is a whole different can of worms. It’s something I love doing but to be honest it’s quite time consuming.

Absolutely, it took me years to get to a point where I can work full-time as a blogger.

      1. Well you have inspired so many people , including me.
I see and learn from your work daily. I’m pushing forward. 😀
        Best wishes to you Pooja.

        1. I’m so happy to hear that 😃

  10. Another great article! Thank you for being real and honest. I’m finding this out the hard way as a new blogger. It can become discouraging and frustrating. It makes you question what are you doing wrong when you read those false hope building, get rich quick articles. Thanks again for helping us stay humble, honest, and produce quality content. ❤️

    1. I’m always happy to share these advice posts. Don’t get disheartened if you don’t see instant results because if you keep at it you will definitely see results over time. 💕

  11. It is a reality check this post. Thanks for sharing it. Blogging sure is hard work and it’s a delicate balance to posting too much or not enough.

    1. Thank you and yes absolutely. It’s all about finding the perfect balance when it comes to blogging.

  12. Yes yes and yes. The spammy multiple times a day post thing drives me insane. I usually unfollow these types pretty quickly. Great advice as usual Pooja

    1. Same here, when people post too much it clogs up my Reader and I usually just end up unfollowing because there is no way I can get to all their articles anyway. Thanks so much.

  13. Thank you for helping us not waste time and energy. They are precious resources these days.

    1. Absolutely, we don’t have any extra time to waste. My pleasure.

Hey.. thanks a lot for sharing this helpful article. And you have very good followers. Touch wood. Requesting you to check one of my post and advise me how can I increase followers and engagement? Thanks in advance.

    1. Thanks and sure I’ll check it out if I get a minute.

  15. ‘It Is An Easy Form Of Passive Income’
That cracked me up😂😂😂. This is definitely one advice we must ignore.
In all, this post was very insightful.

    1. Lol absolutely 😂

      Thanks so much.

  16. Informative. Thanks so much.

    1. My pleasure and thank you.

      1. You are welcome, Pooja.

  17. Blogging is a fun activity. I will do it as long as I enjoy. don’t want any monetary benefits.

    1. I think that’s the best attitude to have with blogging.

  18. You said it all so beautifully and I agree with you completely. 👏👏👏👏👏👏

    1. Thank you so much 😊

  19. Very informative. Thank you for this post. I needed it.

    1. Thank you, so glad you found it informative.

  20. Another amazing post! This is soo true! Nothing is easy. We have to work hard. Especially with logging since there are so many bloggers already. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thanks so much! Yeah exactly, it takes hard work to be successful with anything.

  21. Great article and helpful advice. It is nice to have someone who is always right in their advice to turn to. 😊 I always enjoy your posts. 🤗❤️🙏

    1. Haha thanks so much, I always enjoy your comments 💕😊

  22. Quality over quantity, boy I wish I knew that 4 years ago 😂 back then I was hammering out posts regularly with no real success, whereas now I post twice a week and the numbers are flying up. It’s a lot less stressful for me, and I’m not wasting my time writing stuff that my readers don’t want to read.

Also, your point about affiliate marketing is interesting. I’ve been considering them and trying to get my blog more affiliate friendly, so it’s interesting to see that you say they’re not really worth it unless you get thousands of views per day. The kink & BDSM niche generally does quite well for easy numbers, but struggles for affiliates because of the high risk nature of the topic, as you can probably imagine. I’m nowhere near thousands per day yet, either. Not to worry, I’ve got a blueprint for my first book now, so that’s something. I meant to draft my first chapter yesterday but crazy, crazy day! Lol.
it’s on tomorrow’s schedule now. Thankyou as always for sharing your insights 😁

    1. Yeah I know a lot of bloggers make that mistake where they post too much content. You would rather post less that’s great quality and like you said it’s easier and gets you more traffic.

Personally, I find affiliate marketing to be a scam or at least a way to exploit creators. To be paying someone such a tiny percentage for so much work is ridiculous. It’s pretty much free advertising for them most of the time since you need to earn a certain amount before they pay you and most people give up before they reach that amount.

Ooh good luck with the book!!

  23. I would love this, but the app won’t let me 💜

    1. Sorry to hear that 😞

  24. You are absolutely right when you say that it is irritating when people think that blogging and creating quality content is something easy to do. 100% agree with quality over quantity (something I’ve learned the hard way lol) because as the saying goes you cant beat the system well not for too long anyway and having getting myself a ban on Facebook for posting too much. Still have lots to learn as I’m still a newbie and enjoying the journey and gaining knowledge with amazing posts such as these!!!

    1. Yes, absolutely. Blogging is so much more difficult than people realise. It’s also definitely about the quality. Thanks so much and glad the posts are helping!

  25. Great post Pooja
I do 100 % agree with you, very informative.
    Thanks for sharing 🙂

    1. Glad you agree and thanks so much 😊

  26. Good article. I have read quite a bit of blogging advice and, quite frankly, I ignore almost all of it.

I could be among the few but I don’t really take myself seriously as a blogger and don’t really care if what I post is widely read. I just enjoy writing when I have time and like having a place to share it with whoever happens by.

    1. Honestly, that’s a great way to blog. I think it’s important to enjoy the process and actually like what you’re putting out rather then focus on stats.

  27. Thanks for sharing! Quantity over quality is definitely ideal. When I was first looking at blogging, it was all, do affiliate marketing, make a passive income, quit your job and it’ll be great. It isn’t that easy lol

    1. My pleasure! Absolutely, it’s all about good quality content rather than just posting for the sake of it.
Haha I’ve read a lot of posts that talk about how easy it is to make money blogging and how they made thousands in a week. They always make me laugh.

  28. Great Advice Pooja.. very informative..

    1. Thanks so much.

  29. Great advice 👌✍️✍️. Sometimes I feel like I should post daily, but this tells me better

    1. Thanks so much. Posting daily is great if you have the time and content but it’s best to post when you’re feeling most inspired. 😊

  30. I became more confused on the first one.
Hope posting once everyday is okay?

You really did a great job.
Making money blogging is not easy at all 🤕
Sometimes thinking of monitizing my blog, I become very confused because over here, dollar rate is very high and I can’t risk wasting such amount to have nothing in return. Besides the money is not even here.

    1. Yeah once a day is perfectly fine. I think an issue arises when you post too often like 5-10 times a day.

Thanks so much. Yes, making money online is quite difficult. I would recommend not monetising till you make enough money to pay for the plan. Once you’re making an income it’s worth it but otherwise it’s not since you won’t make much from Ads.

      1. Thanks so much for the advice 👍

        1. Happy to help 😀

  31. Click bait is the worst thing ever!!!!!!!

    1. It makes me sooo mad!!

  32. Great post Pooja.. well thought out and I too can’t stand when people post so much… i just stop following them. I don’t have time for that!
    👏

    1. Thanks and yeah it gets very frustrating and messes up your Reader if one person is constantly posting!

  33. Completely agree! I get so annoyed at some lists of “how to easily make money online” (usually it is NEVER *that* easy…) and also everything about “overnight success”… I’m pretty sure it is absolutely not a thing for most people. I guess it can happen by chance to some, but it is also in no way an indicator of the quality of the content you publish… Anyway, thanks for setting the record straight!

    1. Thank you! Yeah for the majority of people it’s much harder to make money online and you actually need to invest to make a large amount of money which is something not everyone can afford.

  34. “Quantity Over Quality”
Good advice. I used to be focused on trying to post every day and stressed out. I could not blog about anything. I learned to take my time and not rush the process so I could enjoy blogging more.

    “You Will Succeed Overnight”
I remember I looked up blogging tips. I would see sites that offer some tips but would be an ad in some form with simple tips that most know about for blogging.

“It Is An Easy Form Of Passive Income”
Here is the argument that YouTubers or streamers are an easy job. Making money as a blogger, youtube, or streamer takes time to become a passive income. You have to build trust with viewers. And show viewers that you are worth supporting. It takes time and hard work.

    Good post and advice.

    1. Thanks so much and yeah a lot of people do give those pieces of advice but it’s best to ignore them.

  37. I wish I’d come across your blog sooner. This my 3rd one, the other 2 I gave up on because of how difficult to it was. I watched every YouTube video, read every “how to grow your blog ” I could find and although some did help none were bold enough to tell it like it actually is!! it’s just post every day consistency is key blah blah blah. Yes it is but that doesn’t always look like every day geeez. 🤣🤣🤣 I’m sorry, I kinda went on a rant there but honesty is what people need!! So thank you for this🙏🏽

    1. Thanks so much and honestly I definitely understand the frustration 😂 People always give very basic advice and say that should help your blog take off instantly but that’s not always the case. Sometimes it takes months or even years and people need to be honest about that!

  38. Soo insightful. I’ver seen soo many videos and blogs saying quantity over quality and I completely agree with you. Slow blogging just seems much more authentic and as a newbie blogger I definately feel like I’m going to stick to 1 blogpost a week, that way I have a week to tweak, amend and make sure it’s the best thing I can publish.

    1. Thank you. Yes, people keep emphasising certain things which just aren’t true. They make blogging seem like get rich quick scheme which it’s really not. Definitely stick to what works for you and don’t feel too pressured to post too often if it jeopardises your quality.

  39. I do follow your blog and there has never been a dull moment. Your content is always interesting and worth reading. Please, keep it up

    1. Thanks so much, I really appreciate that.

  40. How to use the algorithm to grow your blog is an essential question for bloggers. There are many different methods to grow your blog, but the algorithm is a tried and true way to increase your blog’s traffic. The algorithm is a simple formula that can help you grow your blog traffic by analyzing your blog’s traffic, subscriber base, and other factors.

    1. Yes, I absolutely agree.
