Caged Like A Bird

Caged like a bird

You kept me beside you

For your amusement

For your pleasure

In the cage I patiently waited

Until I could no longer

I thought you would finally set me free

When you saw my misery

But you simply bought me a bigger cage

  1. Interesting. One sets oneself free. If you rely on someone else to do it, you’ll always be in a cage. They do say the truth will set you free.

    1. So true, sometimes we’re the ones keeping ourselves in the cage.

  2. Life makes one feel that way, right? I feel like all the struggle and efforts have not made me truly free. Instead it earns me a bigger cage and better provisions.

    1. I feel that way too. The more you try to escape the larger the cage gets but we’re never truly free.

  3. I enjoy your poetry. Once I convinced my owner I was happier in a locked cage, so they took the lock away. Now I pretend to be unhappy in their presence of what I now call… my home. 😉

    1. Reverse psychology- nice 😜

  4. You are a complete blogger. The variety of your work shows how versatile you are. And, how comfortable you are in various genres. Kudos.
I really love this poem. This poem shows that, how deep your knowledge is. You are not just a content creator, but, also writer, poet and artist. Keep sharing.

    1. Thank you so much, that’s so nice of you to say.

  5. “I thought you would finally set me free
    When you saw my misery

    Ironically Brilliant

    1. Thank you so much.

  6. Damnn, this just portrays how sad things are for some. Loved it!!

    1. Yes, it’s really tough out there for some people. Thank you!

  7. Total freedom doesn’t exist, we are all living in a cage. But most of them is so big we don’t realize they are there.

    1. I absolutely agree. We’re all caged in one way or the other it’s just some of our cages are less obvious.

  8. Loved these lines!!
    Keep writing, Pooja😊

    1. Thank you so much!

  9. We all can relate this cage with our daily life that we wait for some miracle to come out of….

    1. Yes, that’s true. A lot of times we wait for some miracle to help get us where we want to be but that rarely happens.

  10. Charles Dickens once said that we forge the chains we wear in life. Some of those chains are bought with our decisions, with delivery and installation included in the purchase.

If we wait for others to liberate us, it might never come. Our freedom lies in our own hands and in our own thinking.

    1. How fascinating and I do see what he means. A lot of times we think we are forced to live in a cage when in reality we have a way to escape.

      1. Exactly, Pooja.

  11. It’s so painfully real..

    1. Thank you 🙂

  12. I Understand , you are now free to fly.

    1. Thank you, that’s lovely to say.

  13. I genuinely see this in an actual bird’s perspective. Birds are meant to fly free, not be in a cage.

    1. Yeah, for sure. Birds need to fly and yet people who love them often keep them caged.

      1. Exactly. And it’s a pretty sad fact

        1. Really is.

  14. I love a poem that calls you to read it more than once. Well done, Pooja!
Similar to comments from others, for me, the “You” is my ego and the cage is my fear and greed. Thank you for this provocative reminder.

    1. Thank you so much!

That’s a very interesting way of looking at it. Personally, I think we all have our own “cages” in life that we have to break free of.

  15. Wow, It’s so relatable in every day relationships. Most times, this owner claims to love the bird, that’s why he cages it.

    1. Thank you so much. Yes, absolutely. People that sometimes claim to love birds so much end up caging them and stopping them from being free.

  16. you are the captain of your ship and the master of your soul

    1. So true.

  17. Beautifully written poem, Pooja🙂 and some comments too, in response to your post, are wise and really good👍

  18. My pleasure💕🙂

  19. A great post. Life seems to be a maze of overlapping cages, some we install and some we do not even recognize.

    1. Thanks so much, and I absolutely agree.

  20. The sorrows of life is just the ability of allowing those sorrows to continue.
We have to violently and with revolution, break away from the sorrows life have kept us.

    1. I absolutely agree. We need to break free by any means necessary.

  21. Good one. Loved it

    1. Thanks so much.

  24. P.S. Your poem brings to mind a poem I like by Maya Angelou. It’s called Caged Bird. If you haven’t already read it, you may like it: https://www.poetryoutloud.org/poem/caged-bird/

    1. I remember reading it in high school and absolutely loved it. It’s the very first thing I read by Maya Angelou. Thanks for reminding me.

  25. Beautifully written!

    1. Thanks so much! Hope you’re feeling better now.

  26. […] etc. I have really made an effort to achieve that, but only succeeding, like what Pooja says here, in getting a bigger […]

  27. oh I love this Pooja! Very cool .. well written!

    1. Thanks so much! ☺️

  28. Sometimes it can be hard to leave a comfortable place, especially if you have been there for a while. We have to make the first move if we want to come out of the cage we are in. The world is a big place, and it can be frightening at times, but if we never make that first step to set ourselves free, we will always be in that one place and never know the freedom of being free. Thank you for sharing. Nice poem. Have a great week.

    1. I absolutely agree. It’s terrifying but we must take the first step ourselves. Thanks and have a great week too.

  29. Ooh, they rarely do set you free…that’s our sacred work…Hope you’re flying free now!

    1. Absolutely, we have to fly off ourselves!

  30. Nice poem and flow of words! I love how broad its interpretation can be! Freedom is one of the most sought feelings, yet the hardest to achieve!

    1. Thanks so much!

  31. I really enjoyed your poem! It made me think hard about that relationship dynamic.

    1. Thank you so much!

      1. You’re welcome!

  32. Also, a great take on how a narcissist behaves. Nice, Pooja!
