Today, I wanted to talk about appearance vs reality. This effects us on a daily basis. Especially now thanks to social media.
I take English Language and Literature in school and in our exam last year we had to talk about how William Shakespeare brought out the difference in appearance and reality in Othello during the sixteenth century. Admittedly, I haven’t read a lot from Shakespeare.
I always thought his work would be kind of a drag to read. But, I ended up absolutely loving Othello. The events in the book are highly exaggerated for dramatic purposes. However, there is something so realistic and relatable about it. Even though this book was written centuries ago it really got me thinking about today’s society. What I like most about Shakespeare is that he really brings out what’s wrong with society. And the unfortunate thing is we have been unable to fix many of the flaws he pointed out such a long time ago. However, this is not a review of Othello but rather an observation I have personally made recently.
Life
Everyone seems to be so interested in what others think of them and what others have to say that they are no longer themselves. We are all so obsessed with what other people have to say that we have completely lost ourselves. We try so hard to be like other people- dressing a certain way, looking a certain way. It’s depressing really that we’ve always cared this much about what others have to say about us.
Another thing that personally really irritates me is how much we judge people by how they look. Your hair has to be a certain way, your face has to look a certain way or else you’re weird. If you wear less clothes you’re slutty but if you wear too many clothes you’re lame.
If you’re good looking people are more likely to help you or like you despite your flaws but for someone who’s average looking you have to work extra hard to get people to like you. It is pathetic how you can do so much charity work and help out thousands of people or animals and yet your work will go completely unnoticed. But if you have a huge butt and an hourglass figure people will be insanely interested in you. Honesty how many people know Kylie Jenner and how many people know Malala Yousafzai who are the same age but famous for completely different reasons.
Another thing about appearance is how people often say things they don’t mean or pretend to be someone they’re not. We often tell people things like “come again” and “so nice to see you” because it’s the social norm to say them not because we mean it. No one really wants you to come back because they’re busy doing their own things. Everyone is obsessed with looking and seeming polite but no one actually means anything they say.
Conclusion
I just hope that someday in the future people will be less fake and try to be more genuine (which doesn’t seem likely) and that someday we will all appreciate the difference in each other instead of pinpointing them and fighting over them.
“I may not be perfect but at least I am not fake”
“Some of the most poisonous people come disguised as friends and family”
“We never lose friends, we simply learn who the real ones are”
