Review: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Part 2

*WARNING: CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS FOR*

This is the second part of my review of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and like I said in the first part I am mainly focusing on the characters and what I thought about them. Overall though, I did absolutely love the movie and all the characters in it and I think J.J Abrams did a great job.

Han Solo

Han Solo (played by Harrison Ford) is a character from the original Star Wars who was first a smuggler and then joined the Resistance. He eventually did marry Princess Leia Organa and they had a son named Ben who struggled with the Dark Side of the Force. After his son destroyed Luke’s attempts to rebuild the Jedi Order he went back to smuggling and eventually lost the Millennium Falcon.

He first finds it when Rey and Finn use it to escape Jakku. He then eventually meets Leia again and returns with her to the Resistance to help destroy the Starkiller Base which is the First Orders weapon. There he meets his son and tries desperately to convince him to come back and leave the Dark Side but it doesn’t work and his son ends up stabbing him with his Lightsaber. Wounded, he falls to his death in the Starkiller.

I knew that eventually they would have to kill off Hans Solo but I didn’t think it would be in this movie. This death was obviously devastating for all Star Wars fans and I am still mourning it. However, I do understand that this was done to show just how evil Kylo Ren was, although it is highly debatable whether or not they had to kill off Hans Solo to prove that point.

Chewie, we’re home.

Princess Leia Organa

Princess Leia (played by Carrie Fisher) is another character from the original movies. She is the daughter of Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala. However after her father turns to the Dark Side and her mother dies she is adopted by the House of Organa. She is first seen in The Force Awakens when she arrives to help out Han Solo and the rest who are being attacked by the First Order. So she still works with the Resistance. When Han Solo decides to help destroy the Starkiller Base she asks him to bring their son back. Unfortunately, this doesn’t go as planned and Solo ends up being killed by their son. Being Force sensitive she feels it and looks absolutely devastated. In the end we see her bid goodbye to Rey who goes off to find Luke.

Maz Kanata

Maz Kanata (played by Lupita Nyong’O) was a female smuggler who had run her castle for thousands of years. She was very fond of Chewbacca. She was Force sensitive and had the power to see individuals who were also so. And she had somehow come to be in possession of the blue lightsaber that had once belonged to Anakin Skywalker and then Luke Skywalker. She tells Rey that the lightsaber is calling for her and advises her to take it. It is unknown what happens to her after the First Order destroyed her castle. Lupita Nyong’O did a great job with this character.

Captain Phasma

Captain Phasma (played by Gwendoline Christie) is a female Captain working for the First Order. She tries to recondition Finn but it doesn’t work. She watches as the New Republic and Hosnian System are destroyed by the Starkiller. In the end she is left in base’s trash compactor by Han Solo, Finn and Chewbacca. Gwendoline was really great and I’m already a huge fan of hers because of Game Of Thrones. I also really like how this movie has so many strong female characters.

Luke Skywalker

Luke Skywalker (played by Mark Hamill) is the son of Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala. And he is the twin brother of Princess Leia Organa. He was trying to train a new Jedi Order after he was the only Jedi left. Leia sent her son Ben to train too as he was force sensitive. However he ended up destroying everything Luke had tried to build and joined the Dark Side. Luke who was devastated ended up leaving. No one knew where he had been for the last 20 years. However, Rey finally finds him and The Force Awakens ends with him dramatically turning around and looking very surprised. I look forward to seeing more of him in the next movie and cannot wait to see him train Rey.
