As The New Year Approaches

people toasting wine glasses | As The New Year Approaches | I Won

The days grow shorter

And the nights grow longer

The winds grow colder

And all you want is to hold her

Another year come and gone

So much to celebrate and so much to mourn

A lot achieved and some goals pushed under the rug

Now all that’s left is a New Years Eve kiss and hug

About “As The New Year Approaches”:

Okay, why didn’t anyone tell me writing a book is this hard? Urgh, I’m so mentally exhausted. I feel like a machine constantly churning out words but I can’t stop because the words won’t stop coming. I had to write a poem today since I didn’t have the energy to write anything else. And it’s not even a good poem. But I think it’s nice and makes sense since we’re approaching the new year.

The weather is getting colder and windier in Nairobi. They cut down some lovely trees near my house so there’s just so much wind now. It makes me mad but what can you do.

Anyway, “As The New Year Approaches” is just a fun poem I thought I would share today. Not one that’s going to go in my biography someday (lol) but fun to write nonetheless. Christmas and Boxing Day are officially over. How did yours go? Did you have a merry Christmas? How did you spend Christmas? We just watched Home Alone & Home Alone 2. Are you prepared for the New Year? What are your plans for New Years Eve? Let me know in the comments below. Or simply stop by and say hi.

Ps. this poem has two verses, I hope it’s not just a mush on the Reader because that happens sometimes.

  1. I love your poem. Very well written Pooja. It was business as usual here except we got a long weekend and there were lots of marriages to attend.

    1. Thank you, I really appreciate that. Oh yes, December is always wedding season here too.

      1. You’re most welcome. 💕💞

  2. Wow, I love your poem, Pooja! It struck a chord with me, one from back in the 1980s. People need to stop cutting trees down, they are crucial to our survival and others too. Why is Boxing Day observed there? Is it a British thing somehow? Just curious, Pooja.

    1. Thank you! Yes, I agree. And these trees were so old too. It must have taken decades to grow them. I was so disappointed to see them cut down. Yes, I believe Boxing Day is British and these days people just have sales on Boxing Day. It’s supposed to be a day to donate to the less fortunate but now people just buy stuff on sale.

      1. I see, thanks for the clarification. ❤️

        1. No problem, I know you don’t have it in the US so happy to explain it ❤️

  3. Very nice Pooja, you are a great writer and encourager. Have a great night.

    1. Thank you so much and have a great night too.

  4. Your poem speaks to the year well and i love it Pooja. If we told you, you never would have written your book.. lol.. hang in there my friend

    1. Thank you so much! Lol yeah, that’s true. Thankfully most of the hard parts are over 🥳

  5. Hard as it may seem writing a book and having it accepted is the easy part. Marketing it is exhausting and requires travel and total commitment.

    1. That’s so true, marketing is what’s so difficult.

  6. It’s a damn fine poem and very appropriate! Hang in there on the writing. Even though it can be exhausting, you are clearly very talented at it.
Had a decent Christmas here. Went to my aunt’s house for dinner, hung out with the family and then played some video games at night. Today I did not do much because I ate way more than my fill yesterday lol
Going into 2024, I will be starting a course at a local college next week with an eye toward getting an associate degree. Will also be looking for a new job in a hopefully much nicer environment. I have a good feeling about things overall and relish the new challenges.

    1. Thank you so much! Yes, it’s tough but I really want to get my writing out there so worth it.
That’s fair and as we agreed the calories still don’t count lol.
Oh that’s great. What field are you looking to get into? How long is the course?

      1. No the calories don’t count even a little lol
I, for one, am glad you’re getting your writing out there. I have quite enjoyed what I’ve read so far.
I’m starting off with an 8-week computer skills course just to sharpen the saw and pick up some new tricks. It will help get me used to being in a classroom setting again. My next step is to speak with an advisor about pursuing an associates in business. It will help immensely since I intend to stay in management, at least for now.

        1. Thanks so much, really appreciate that.

That sounds very interesting and I think having computer skills is always a good idea since we rely so much on them. And business is a good field to pursue too.

          1. I’ve picked up some at my former job, but with the speed at which things change, I feel some focused education will be a real benefit.

I’ve been working as a team lead and supervisor for about 6 years now. and truly like it. The challenge of getting a team together and focused on a common goal is very satisfying. All that said, I am also taking this opportunity to expand my horizons and try new things. Like writing lol

            1. Yeah, I think there’s always something new we can learn even if we’ve worked in the field before. Plus, more education may mean better work opportunities in the future.

Trying new things is always a good idea. Hope you’re enjoying writing so far. I may be bias but it’s just the best lol.

              1. Oh, yes indeed. Always looking to learn more. Any edge these days is a total plus.
I do enjoy writing quite a bit. I’ve dabbled off and on for years. Mostly poems really. I’ve tried writing a few stories but nothing I am totally satisfied with yet!

                1. I just read the poem you posted and really enjoyed it. I don’t think writers are ever fully satisfied lol but I think you’re doing great so far.

                  1. No, I’m sure most are not. That seems to be a common trait in most creative people. Artists, musicians, etc.
Thank you very much, I truly appreciate that!

                    1. You’re very welcome! Yes, unfortunately us creatives are often our worst critic.

                    2. Funny enough that much like we often need to forgive ourselves and move on from our mistakes, a lot of us also need to learn to enjoy and be proud of our creations, ideas, etc. Or at least find some satisfaction in knowing we did our best.

                    3. True, we need to lift ourselves up as well.

  7. A heartfelt and poignant piece!

    1. Thank you so much!

  8. our Christmas tradition for a few years now has been re-watching Lord of the Rings…..and now, well have to add the Hobbit and the Power of the Ring…but a quiet Christmas was good, family, turkey and visiting….
this is going to sound strange, and I know I’m a late comer to your blog, but, I’d like to hear/read more and more about life in Nairobi? I know a city is a city, but still…..

    1. Oh that’s nice. I read LOTR in high school and quite enjoyed it.

I hope to share more posts about life in Nairobi. Hopefully I can share more “Day In The Life” posts so you get a better idea of what a normal day is like here.

  9. Sometimes we just need to write fun stuff! I will be working at my beloved shelter this weekend. Just making sure everyone is safe and sound! Our rule was always to stay over if you’re going out to celebrate. No use inviting trouble on amateur night!

    1. True! That’s amazing, yes it’s important to be safe!

  10. Lol writing a book is one of those things that changes your life forever. Im currently on my second book and that thing is now my child. Its Literally consuming my life, and the characters are my new family 😅

I hope you had a pleasant Christmas and that you have an even better New Year ☀️

    1. Lol for real, it really becomes your child. It’s so crazy.

Thank you so much and wishing the same for you 😊

  11. Oh lovely poem PooG ❤️

You please take care. I wonder what can be done of mental exhaustion 🤔

Looks like you had a good Christmas.

My Christmas was average,as we don’t celebrate
I went to wedding yesterday, had fun
    😅
And today I’m sick again. I mean, I was sick yesterday, but somehow got energy to go to the wedding, but today it’s worse.

Funny thing is, I had not got sick in 2023, but now my record is ruined 🤧🤒

    1. Thanks so much, I think I just need some time to relax but that’s not happening till the book is done lol 😂

Oh yes, it’s wedding season. I’m sorry yo hear you’re sick. Get better soon and take care of yourself 💕

      1. Actually no, it’s not wedding season
For a month from 15 dec to 15 jan, there will be no auspicious events among Hindu.
This wedding was of bohra community 🙂

I hope to get better soon 😛

        Waiting for your book ❤️

        1. Oh I see, for us December is a huge wedding season.

Thanks, hope you’re feeling better ☺️

          1. When you are calling??
            Or will it be India?
Udaipur is great place for destination wedding.

I’m trying to feel better, merry Christmas for me 🤒😛

            1. In Kenya we have wedding season during the end of November till the start of January. Lol, I’m absolutely not doing a destination wedding because it’s too expensive but you’ll be invited to Kenya!

              1. See, atleast now you agree that you will marry in near future. Earlier, you weren’t accepting it 😛

                1. Yeah, I’m totally open to marriage if I happen to run into Matt Berry or Pedro Pascal… otherwise it’s still a no lol 😛

                  1. Both are ancient 😲😛

                    1. How dare you, those are my future husbands you’re talking about… 😛

                    2. Anyone young?
                      Tom Holland?
                      Timothée Chalamet?
                      Anyone from BTS?
I mean, people are crazy about them? 🤷🏻‍♂️

                    3. Not even slightly attracted to them. I agree they are attractive, just not to me. Look I have a type and it’s older guys lol. Even when I was a teenager and everyone was hitting on the guys in One Direction I had a crush on Ice Cube…

                    4. Now you know, I have a type lol 😂

                    5. You have peculiar taste in certain things 😛

Sometimes it’s hard to believe that this person is my favorite blogger.

                    6. I told you, I’m a peculiar person 😅

                    7. This 2024 I will try to understand the extent

                    8. Good luck, you may not like what you find 😅

                    9. Since 2.5 years
If I’ve learned 20 goods things about you
Then I’ve also learned 30 weird things about you, so I’m ready for anything now.

Best thing is, I’ve not heard or learned anything bad thing about you. That tells what kind of gold person you are. ☺️

                    10. Aw, thanks. Well hopefully you will continue to feel the same way in 2024 😊

  12. NICE POST 💚💖💓

Blessed and Happy morning 🌄 from Spain 🇪🇸

    Greetings ❤️♥️💓

    Blessed and Happy day 🌄🎄

    1. Thank you so much 💖

  13. Incidentally, they cut down a very big tree right not far from my window recently because it bothered the utility poles. I have felt bad about it since as a person growing up in the Steppe, trees were treated as mythical, god like creatures that should not be cut down. Anyway, wish you all the best with your book and I can’t wait to buy it and read it.

    1. That’s so sad, it always breaks my heart when a tree is cut down. Thank you so much, I really appreciate your support.

  14. Delightful lines, thanks.

    1. Thanks so much.

  15. The poem resonated with me.

I had two turkey dinners in two days, so maybe I am turning into a turkey now (if I wasn’t one already). Catching up on visits with old friends has been nice.

I plan to get some writing done before the new year.

I hope you get a bit of downtime for yourself and relieve the writing stress.

    1. Thank you so much. Lol, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again- calories don’t count in December.

I hope you get some writing done and yes I hope to get some free time soon.

  16. Not at all a mush. I try to stay out of those, but a micromush lol is just fine. It’s just keeping the mind practicing and progressing. I always thought to some of the great writers in the world and their reasoning that every piece wont be a hit, but consistency showing up is the goal.

For me, during the holiday season, planning content has always been a drag, unless something inspiring comes out of nowhere and I need to share. Too many Christmas’s have passed to battle, especially once we passed 5 Christmas’s, and it’s the end of the year, I will fight the fight in January. lol

    1. Thanks so much. True, consistency is so important.

Lol, it’s like that at the end of the year. We’re usually too exhausted to really be productive.

      1. That’s true. lol. We need a recharge as content creators. Mentally. 🙂

        1. Absolutely, we need breaks too.

  17. May the winds of change bring laughter to your days,
As the new year approaches in delightful ways.
May your words flow freely, like a river so grand,
And may creativity dance at your command.

In the chilly Nairobi breeze, find warmth and cheer,
As you write your tales, make each word crystal clear.
May your energy replenish like a wellspring anew,
Bringing joy, success, and dreams that come true.

May the trees of inspiration grow tall and strong,
As you navigate the chapters, short and long.
Embrace the fun, let the words be your guide,
In this literary journey, may joy and wit coincide.

    1. Wow, I absolutely loved the poem. Thank you for sharing it and writing it.

  18. I love your poem. It brings this new year nostalgia feeling. It feels like it was written effortlessly with so experience. If your poems are this good even when you’re tired, then your book with so much effort will be a bestseller! Happy Holidays

    1. Thanks so much. I really appreciate you saying that! Happy Holidays to you as well.

  19. It’s a heartfelt melody, Pooja. Don’t be too hard on yourself, writing a book is indeed a challenging feat. I’m sure your perseverance shines through.
I think Home Alone on Christmas Eve is just a tradition of every home. 😅
Wishing you a peaceful New Year’s Eve and a wonderful start to 2024 🙌🏼🥂

    1. Thank you so much. Yes, it’s so difficult but I hope it’s all worth it.

Lol true, Home Alone is such a classic 😅

Thanks and wishing you the same 🎉

  20. Awesome Poem. Excellent narration

    1. Thank you so much.

  21. I liked the poem and it’s very timely. Christmas Day was great. I got to spend it with extended family and had a yummy dinner. Boxing Day was at home and peaceful. No concrete plans for NYE yet but I’m sure I’ll find something to do to ring in the new year. Looking forward. Happy New Year when it comes!

    1. Thank you so much. Boxing Day was at home for me too this year. We’re not big shoppers anyway. Thanks and have a great New Year too!

  22. One page at a time! 😁

    1. Urghh yes, it’s the editing it before sending it to the editor that’s killing me 😅

  23. milk and honey
poojer z but ono was there
so i only half track did care
    as for the rest
    that s playin with fire

    1. This better be the next Milk And Honey lolz.

      1. sans yoko. some take her seriously, john did. her flokes did. but she s a cpa not an artist. now let s sing it. run to the hills! run fa ya liiife. cos pappa daddy s headed home to terrible timmy or si vous plait just john and his angry son tom.

        1. Lol, I could never take her seriously.

          1. who could? jerry and george did. hey that show about nothing really was not a damn thaing Pooja!

            1. George is my favourite character, literally so relatable lol!

              1. yeah he s the consumate fuck up

  24. Wonderful blog post Pooj my friend. Well, I can’t say the poem was horrible but it was okay. It resonates with the upcoming new Year. It is actually romantic, any girl would blush if men like us flirted like this😂😋, haha.

    Great stuff💯

    1. Lol, they can’t all be winners so I’m okay with a just okay poem 😅 Thanks ☺️

  25. That is a beautiful poem, Pooja, and one I can relate to. Our Christmas was peaceful except there was a blackout for 3 hours. At least the weather was mild and not freezing at 9 F like last year. We have no special plans for NYE and prefer to stay at home rather than be out and around with the crazies.

Writing a book can be stressful and try to stay calm and take it one step at a time. 💖

    1. Thank you so much. It’s good the weather wasn’t too bad although the blackout sounds inconvenient. We usually go to more quiet places for NYE too or stay home. Not a fan of partying.

Thanks, I’m trying to do that but sometimes I still get a little stressed out haha 💕

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja. 💖

  26. Writing a book is hard. (You said no one had told you.) I’m sorry about the trees. It’s awful they were cut down. Natural wind-breakers, aren’t they? I like the poem. I find the first verse (yes, two verses came through) especially to have impact. And what is Boxing Day? I tried to look it up and came away unclear about it. Maybe I should ask, What do you do for Boxing Day? It seems there are variations. Anyway, your poem has me thinking about New Year’s, so may I say here: Pooja, Happy New Year!

    1. Finally, thank you for saying that lol.

Yes, trees are great. Now it’s all windy and dusty. From what I know, Boxing Day was meant to be about charity but now we just have big sales and people go shopping. We don’t like to shop much so we just stay home and relax. Thanks and Happy New Year to you as well!

  27. I liked the poem. I see that you don’t mind turning out a poem quickly and easily when your energy is low that you’re not fully satisfied with. For myself, to turn out a poem that I’m not satisfied with is a catastrophe (hyperbole) sort of. I don’t think I can do a poem on low energy (low energy is reserved for pre-New Years suicide plans which don’t always rhyme). Last year I did this:

    December is a speculation;
    it looms over
    the fabric of destiny

    December is the
    death of a year.

Death in the winter is cool.
’tis the dead leaves who fertilize the soil
but it is the trees who cry
when vandals collect leaves and leave

Death in the winter is cool.
    Of December more.

Jazz in winter is cool too, yeah
December improvises with snow gone fluffy
where syncopated fluffy dogs scamper in snow tones
of blues in raggy times where snow jobs make poor
December the con game, optimism as a debt
    Better to be in Australia.

    1. That’s an interesting poem. I don’t know if Australia is that much better (I have a lot of cousins there) when it comes to weather but definitely less snowy. Unfortunately, the holidays can be a tough time for many. Sending you a virtual hug.

  28. Writing a book is a journey that is sometimes smooth and sometime rough. I know. I have experienced those ups and downs. But taking time to write a poem is a nice break and I liked your poem 🙂

    1. Yes, I am finding the final few days quite difficult as I’m suddenly much less satisfied with my writing. The perfectionist in me has taken over. It was a nice break and I’m glad you liked the poem 🙂

  29. Yes! I love this poem, Pooja. May the New Year be your very best one yet.

    1. Thank you! Have a wonderful New Year too and may you achieve all your goals in 2024.

  30. Kiss and hug hmm 🧐 what’s up?

    1. In a platonic way lol (maybe) 😅

      1. I knew it 😁 🙌. Careful with your heart hehe.

        1. Hehe I always am 😅

  31. The poem is very lyrical, it makes me think of my year… Writing a book can be easier said than done, I wish you all the best with it.

    1. Thank you so much. Yes, writing a book is incredibly difficult when you actually do it.

      1. What is it about?

        1. It’s a poetry book and will contain 100 poems.

          1. That’s right, I remember now

  32. Beautiful Pooja. Happy New Year to you and yours. Looking forward to 2024 and all the love and joy we will experience. Hugs, C

    1. Thank you so much, have a wonderful 2024.

  33. Where you say fun poem… we interpret as profound thoughts to end the year with… a lovely one, Pooja 🤍🤗

    1. Aw, thanks so much 🤗

      1. most welcome 🤗🌹🤍

  34. I think writing simple poems gives your brain a break from focusing too much on a major project. And I think it’s a win win situation.
It keeps the creative juices flowing.

I’m working on a book too. However, my problem is I’m always fighting for time. Work eats up more than half the day especially on the days when I have emergency duty and surgeries. By the time I come home, I’m exhausted. I sometimes don’t even have the energy to sit and open my laptop and write. Do you have any advice on how to manage time better? 😅

    1. That’s true, I think it’s refreshing to write simple poems sometimes.

Time is definitely a big issue and I think it would be harder for you since you work in the medical field. It’s definitely tough but I would say keep writing as much as you can even if it takes a while to complete, all the hard work will be worth it 😊

      1. I really hope it all pays off 🤞🏼

        1. I know it will so keep writing.

  35. Nice poem. At first i thought it would end in tragedy 🤣😎🙃

    1. Lol, surprisingly it did not 😅

      1. There’s hope for you yet 🤣😎🙃

  36. Very fun poem Pooja. Christmas day was wonderful for me. I got to be with my close family and see my one year old great-niece. The last time I saw her was last Christmas when she was just over two months old. Time sure flies when you live four hours away and are busy. It sounds like your Christmas was relaxing. I hope that the new year is good to you and your family.

    1. Thank you so much. Wow, that does sound very wonderful. Glad you got to see her again even if it’s after so long. It’s hard living far away from family. Hope you and you’re family have a great new year too.

  37. you got some battle Rap in you and I felt that edge and reflection. its one side of yeah lets celebrate and then the other side of the same ole same. respect and peace, you are appreciated

    1. Thanks so much, really appreciate that as well.

  38. This is so beautiful Pooja! Cheers to 2024

    1. Thank you and cheers to 2024!

  39. Happy new year . Such a nice poem .

    1. Thanks so much. Happy New Year.

  40. Well written poem Pooja. ☺️

    1. Thank you so much 😊

  41. A lovely poem. And sentiments shared are never wanted and never horrible. I loved it.
And stay the course..writing a book can be daunting, but the process makes you so much better as well. And it’s gonna be worth it. 💪💪💜

    1. Thanks so much. I really appreciate the encouragement 😊

      1. I believe you you my friend. 💪🙏

  42. Great poem.

We had a pretty busy Christmas, going out to our son’s home then hosting most of the family in ours on the 26th, and hosting my other son’s future in-laws last night. Catching up on blogs today!

    1. That sounds busy but in a good way!

      1. Yes, exactly!

  43. Cute poem ❤️. All the best for the new year!

    1. Thanks so much and wishing you a great 2024 ❤️

  44. Awesome poem 😊

    1. Thanks so much 😊
