The “Random” WordPress Changes Are Far From Random

How WordPress Works | I'm done with WordPress | Things I Would Change About WordPress | The Random WordPress Changes Are Far From Random | Six Word Story| How To Create An Algorithm Friendly Post | Features I Wish WordPress Had | Today, I want to ask you guys to share your thoughts about WordPress. How do you feel about WordPress as a blogging platform?

If you’ve been on WordPress for the last few years, you know that changes are a constant here these days. Just recently, much to the chagrin of most users, there have been some major changes made to WordPress. For a while, I thought they were just dumb random changes and then I thought, the people trying to replace it’s human customer care with AI to make larger profits would never waste money on something like that. And then it hit me, these random WordPress changes are far from random. In fact, they are very much calculated.

What do I mean by that? Well, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that every single thing they got rid of was used by bloggers as evidence of how glitchy this platform has become.

The “Random” WordPress Changes Examined

Let’s start with the Reader. They got rid of the option to search for sites we follow. Now, I don’t know about you guys but I have heard a lot of people complain about how glitchy that feature was. Some blogs would just not show up even when you were subscribed to them. Furthermore, many have complained that they would randomly stop following certain sites even though they themselves didn’t unfollow. Having that option helped us point stuff like that out, without it that becomes more difficult to do. Now the manage subscriptions option is hidden in a corner instead of front and centre on your Reader.

Next, the email stats. For a while, we were able to see how many people opened emails from the blog and how many clicked through. The problem was that people soon realised that some posts were not being sent via email to all followers.

I personally had this issue just recently with one of my posts that didn’t reach most people via email including myself (I’m subscribed to my own site with a different email) till hours after it was published. Not to mention with my last WP account they stopped sending emails completely and when I pointed it out they gaslighted me and tried to shadow ban me.  The opens and clicks were super low on that post so I also assume many people that usually received a notification via email for new posts published on the site did not receive the email for that one. And now the feature to view email stats is completely gone after multiple users complained. Coincidence? I think not…

And that’s just two examples. I’m not going to go into detail for each one because I have a dinner thing tonight and don’t have the time to type it all out. But y’all are smart, you can figure it out for yourself.

Final Thoughts

So turns out, the “random” WordPress changes may not be so random after all.

Just a disclaimer so WordPress doesn’t sue me or try to shadow ban me again, these are just my thoughts/opinions and not facts. I may be the furthest from the truth or maybe I hit the nail on the head. Either way, just my thoughts.

What do you think about the recent changes to WordPress’s design? Let me know your thoughts on the comments below because I would love to hear your thoughts. Or simply stop by and say hi!

  1. I’m not thrilled at all about all the random changes! It just makes life on word press harder than it has to be! X

    1. Yes, they really do and most of us don’t enjoy the changes!

  2. after my two years I’m always a bit confused at why I don’t see some blogs for so long, only to find out they’ve been posting, I’m just not seeing…..I’m making a change to the free subscription, not sure there’s any benefit for the $$$$ every year

    1. Yes, that’s happened to me too. It’s so disappointing.

  3. Pooja, I have heard of the issues you mention and have experienced being unfollowed from blogs I follow, a WP glitch again? Also, several days ago, the way the vertical Stats bars render has changed. They are much wider now and show less information. Plus, when I hover over them, the pop on and off. There and gone! This really grinds my gears, Pooja… Yet, we can’t do anything including speak with one of those happy people now. For me, there is no replacing WP so what can any of us do?

    1. I’ve had that issue too, with your blog once in fact. I noticed I didn’t see your posts on my Reader and when I searched for it I noticed I didn’t follow you anymore. There’s really nothing we can do since there’s no similar platform and ironically WP is the lesser of the evils since other platforms are often worse.

      1. That sucks, WP has devolved over the years Pooja. Today is my birthday and the Wnter Solstice. Now the days get longer!

        1. Omg a very happy birthday!!! ❤️

          1. Thank you so much! ❤️❤️💕💕 I’m having my home cleaned right now after all of the dust from the new floor work. 😂🤙🏻

            1. That’s one way to celebrate your birthday 😅

              1. Thanks! ❤️❤️

                  1. 🤙🏻❤️

  4. I don’t know if I am doing it wrong but on my feed page I have about five different peoples posts and then I get posts from them that they made days ago. I follow over 300 other bloggers I imagine yet I don’t get see anything from them just the posts of a select few people I follow. God knows 🤷🏽‍♂️

    1. That’s so odd, sounds like a WP glitch tbh.

  5. Thank you for pointing all this out…My reader icon (reading glasses) still never comes into focus…It looks like a grey rectangle and I had no idea what it was until …finally I clicked on it…My readership has gone down a lot…this could be my fault, people are sick of my content, but hmm I too don’t receive email notices about many blogs I am subscribed to…Glad you are on top of this Pooja!!!:) 💪🏼

    1. That’s awful and I’m sure very annoying. Traffic has gone down for a lot of blogs recently, I don’t think it has to do with content but rather changes in what the WP algorithm pushes. Thanks ☺️

  6. Sometimes confusing but I always manage to find out where they have but things 🙂

    1. Yeah, after some looking around it’s not too bad.

  7. That should be put things not but things. LOL. Apparently, I can’t edit my comments.

    1. Lol yes they really should let us edit these the typos in comments.

  8. I have had the random unfollow thing going on for ages. Highly annoying. Not thrilled with the new Reader format either. I have not been on as regularly as I was in the recent past, but every time I come back, it feels like I have to learn the platform all over again. I exaggerate some, but not by much lol

    1. Yeah, I’ve had to deal with it too and when I complain they just gaslight me about it. So annoying. They honestly change things every few weeks, you barely even get the hang of it and things are different again. Hope you’re feeling better now!

      1. I’m mostly better, yes thank you. 😊
What you say is no exaggeration. Sometimes it’s not even every few weeks, I swear!

        1. Oh good, glad you’re better 😀
For real, it’s getting crazy I don’t even recognise this platform anymore!

          1. I don’t either. And not just because I haven’t been around either LOL

  9. My mother had trouble and had to start all over resubscribing. She did not get emails saying I had a new post. I’m sure others aren’t getting them either. They stopped responding to my communication about issues a long time ago. Do they even have tech support anymore? I used to be able to get someone in chat messaging after work.

    1. That’s awful and yes that email glitch definitely happens. A number of my followers also don’t receive the emails and have had to check manually on the Reader. They have tech support still but barely. They are almost no help.

  10. I had to look up shadow banning. What a dishonest practice. If you want to ban or suspend someone, do it openly, preferably with an explanation. Another thing I’ve noticed is that under the “emails” the clicks column it says 0% (under Jetpack stats subscribers). They removed the count and replaced it with percentages except the percentages are all zero. The Since column under subscribers is replaced by nothing but minus signs. This is very strange.

    1. Yes, it’s extremely shady. That’s definitely strange but I think it’s because their numbers are inaccurate and they don’t know how to fix it. So they just show 0% instead.

  11. I am having trouble editing my blog posts, it almost locks out after I type into a new block.

    1. That’s awful, the block editor is so difficult to use.

  12. Since I blog from my phone, the option to search from the reader is still on the Jetpack app.

    1. Oh good, that’s lucky. I use my desktop and it’s gone.

      1. How frustrating for you and so many others too.

        1. Yes, it really can be.

          1. 🤗🤗🤗

  15. I have not encountered these issues, but I do get plenty of spammer email.

    1. Oh yes, the email spam is so annoying.

      1. I must admit, I am tempted to cash in on some of those bit coin and SEO/marketing help offers though. I could be rich. 🙂

        1. If only it were that easy 😅

  16. I find the changes they bring in are hugely annoying. You get used to operating in one way and then find that no longer works. Frustrating. Rarely, if ever, are they an improvement. Seeems like change for changes sake most of the time.

    1. Absolutely, the changes just make the platform worse.

  17. I can now see all the sites that I follow really easily. I think is a great feature, for me at least.

    1. Oh good, I’m glad the changes were helpful for you.

  18. I fully agree. Each “update” has seen a little bit of what we are used to removed. And while further updates may bring back a skeleton of a removed function, it never is as full bodied and useful as the original option was.

    1. Yes, exactly. It’s so frustrating.

  19. I too have had many problems with the functionality of the site, and questioning my investment. I truly do not like the fact that we cannot actually speak to any representative to deal with any of it.

    1. Yes, it’s mostly bots now answering our complaints. So disappointing. But even when you can talk to an actual person, it’s quite unhelpful from my experience. It wasn’t like that before.

  20. You hit the nail on the head, Pooja… no coincidence, and you shouldn’t feel that you’re wrong. WP is getting worse.

    1. Yes, I think so too. It’s getting worse but the changes are not random at all.

  21. they are annoying

    1. They sure are.

  22. Yes, yes, yes Pooja! I couldn’t even find the Reader for three weeks. It had moved to the other side and suddenly become a glasses icon. It was okay for awhile until just recently,I noticed that they weren’t showing all of my followed subscribers posts. I like to see them in the order they drop, but no more. Sometimes I just go to someone’s site directly and avoid the Reader altogether. ANNOYING! Thanks for shining a light on this!

    1. That’s awful, it took me a while to find the Reader too because of that change. Why even replace it with an icon especially when it doesn’t say “Reader” when you hover over it. How are people supposed to know. Yes, the Reader order is messed up now and some sites don’t show up even though you’ve followed them. Very annoying.
      Thanks!

  23. Thank you for keeping us informed. I have noticed these “random” changes. In fact, as soon as I opened your blog post, it showed me that I wasn’t subscribed to your page, which is false. So, I refreshed the page, and the problem was resolved. It could have been a page error, but as you mentioned, WordPress has a way of suppressing our content’s reach to our audience, and I’m glad that you’re bringing awareness to this issue.

    1. That’s so odd but a number of people have told me that’s happened to them too. It definitely tries to suppress our content and traffic especially over the last couple of years so you never know.

  24. I have the problem being unfollowed by the blogs I follow, as well. Also, when I follow a blog, it defaults to notifications and I can’t get it to change to email. I found that using the Classic view of my Dashboard as opposed to the Default view is more to my liking. Other than that, many of my issues have subsided for the time being. Fingers crossed.

    1. Yes, the follow/unfollow issue is common on WP. Glad the other issues are gone for you and hopefully it will stay that way.

      1. Me too, Pooja. Fingers crossed.

  25. I am not a fan of the changes at all. The changes only make it more difficult to be a part of the blogging community and to write posts. WP seems to care more about making changes, unneeded ones, that what bloggers want.

    1. I agree, it’s difficult to even do the bare minimum these days.

      1. It seems intentional like WP is trying to steer people to something

        1. I wouldn’t be surprised if it were intentional.

  26. WordPress changes have by and large been annoying. I’ve had to develop a more and more convoluted strategy in order to do fairly basic things, such as write or paste in verse (which still doesn’t respect the tab feature), find and use images, and connect my posts to other sites (only Facebook and X remain with links). I believe you’re right that no change is random and is instead an aim for greater profitability. Customer service and profitability can go hand in hand, I think.

    1. Yes, even doing the basic stuff on here has become much more difficult. It’s definitely not just random changes, I doubt they would do that. It has to do with profits as well as trying to save their own butts by keeping us from noticing the glitches.

  27. Thanks for being here to point all this out so I don’t just think it’s me going crazy. I always want to say “don’t fix what’s broken”… hear me?!!!! I can’t get sued for saying that can I?🤣

    1. Yessss if it’s not broken why try to fix it! Especially when there’s stuff that does need fixing 😩

      1. I’ll say and who knows what’s actually true!💗

  28. I’ve been so annoyed by the loss of the easy reader tab to check the sites I follow. Especially when I’m not on as much, I like to go back to several accounts and catch up! Thanks for telling me where to look for that now.

    1. Yeah, it’s very inconvenient these days and takes forever to find anything!

  29. I agree. I never thought anything was random with WP in general. I don’t like the changes to the reader as well. If I were to guess, I think WP is attempting to switch from a bot type of content control to an AI type of content control. Bots just flag things. An AI program can make sweeping changes once it “hears” or “comes up with” a good idea or runs into a “bad” idea. A big advantage for a large business. Take care Pooja!

    1. Yes, I think it’s all very calculated changes. Interesting to know. Thanks so much and take care too!

  30. Didn’t you get the memo? There’s never enough.
    🍻

    1. It seems so 🤷🏻‍♀️😅

  31. I notice a lot of minor, annoying changes. And glitches. ALmpst thought I was going to lose a very long, uber-formatted post as a result!

    1. Oh no that’s awful, I hate when it doesn’t save properly or messes up the layout of posts.

  32. I’ve lost a lot of people because of these glitches.

    1. I’m sorry to hear that, unfortunately I have too and I believe most bloggers have.

  33. I don’t dive in to some of the features of WP like some do….but I wish they would leave it the heck alone! Just the basic functions are getting harder to find/use.

    1. Yes, I wish they would just stop with the changes! It’s hard to even do the basic stuff anymore.

  34. Glad to be reading about this. I thought it was just me. All these changes make me feel like I’m constantly coming home and seeing the furniture rearranged so I can’t find stuff.

    1. Yeah, definitely just you. It’s particularly frustrating when the changes just make things more difficult and get rid of features we use all the time.

  35. Yes! Good points, Pooja. I miss the ability to search for blogs.

    1. Same here, I used to use that feature all the time and now it’s so inconvenient to search for blogs we follow.

  36. I don’t like changes, period. they make me feel stupid and old, every time new changes arrive I feel that I’m back to square one – absolute beginner… It’s really frustrating to be sent to the first grade after graduating from college

    1. I know what you mean, I always get really frustrated by changes too. Especially when they are so unnecessary.

      1. I noticed half of them only today, I was like waaaait a minute…

  37. Thanks for your thoughts, Pooja and you are right about the glitches! It just seems in trying to correct these even more ones are created. Even now, on many blogs and including yours,I have to to go through so many steps to leave a comment! I feel the exasperation of so many bloggers and wonder if WP are losing users as a result. I saw your comment that other platforms are worse!! Yikes! Annika

    1. Yes, I think it just creates so many more issues and now there are a million glitches on this platform.
Unfortunately, yeah most of the other platforms are even worse which is why we have no choice but to stick around here or try self-hosting.

  38. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

    1. Thank you and same to you!

  39. I’ve used the WordPress platform for a number of years now. In some cases, via separate hosting providers. Between the hosting providers updates and WordPress it was a constant battle to maintain the site.

What’s a little eerie…Is when it comes to shadow banning and blogs being unfollowed due to a “glitch”, it seems to be common place all over now. Makes me wonder at times, if there a universal AI program being used, but that’s just a thought 🤷‍♂️.

    1. That’s a really interesting thought and there may be truth to it. It seems every platform has that glitch so it makes sense if it was a universal program causing it.

      1. I would love to know who’s behind it, if that’s the case too (well maybe I wouldn’t want to know). A couple years ago, I was talking to some of my friends about it, and we went way down the rabbit hole speculating.

        1. Yeah, I think I would like to know too but I kind of have an idea. But I’m going to keep my mouth shut about it lol.

          1. lol, I understand that. I’ve also been reserved, about sharing some of my thoughts on it too. I have always wondered though, if there is a self aware AI in the system, like a true ghost in the machine.

  40. Happy holidays.❤️

    1. Happy Holidays to you as well ❤️
