Taking Out The Trash

colorful garbage bins | Taking Out The Trash

Today I wanted to talk about something that used to cause a lot of anxiety and depression for me but now I think of it as taking out the trash.

I was reading this post yesterday by Chanél and found it extremely relatable. Please take a minute to read it if you can, it’ll help make more sense of this post. Anyway, what I found relatable was how she talked about fixating on the actions of others and not understanding why someone would intentionally do something that would hurt others. I was the same way, I couldn’t wrap my head around it. I’m someone who tries to treat others how I would want to be treated and yet there have been a lot of people in my life that have not treated me as they treat themselves. A couple of incidents stand out to me. I wanted to share them with you today.

Incident #1

The first incident is one that really hurt. I’ve since tried to process and move past it. But it really changed me and how I show up for others.

This happened around the same time last year. I was trying to have a conversation with someone when they snapped at and were like “can you just get to the point already?” I was so hurt and taken aback because this was someone I had listened to for HOURS because that’s the kind of relationship I thought we had. It really disillusioned me in so many ways because although they apologised after that incident, I began noticing things I had missed before. Not to mention the apology was a “I’m sorry but…” sort of apology. They were constantly talking over me, tuning out when the conversation had to do with something about my life, forgetting important things I had mentioned.

What hurt most was that I would never treat them the way they treated me. I eventually found out they were talking behind my back and lying/exaggerating a lot of stuff.

Learning this hurt a lot at the time but I’ve since then been able to completely distance myself and I think it was for the best. It helped me understand where I stood. I no longer needed to go out of my way for them.

Incident #2

The second thing happened recently and I think I’m well adjusted now for it not to bother me at all really. A cousin who resides in another country visited after quite a while. Of course, everyone was excited to see her. However, I talked to my other cousins (we’re all first cousins) and realised that this person brought back gifts for literally everyone except my family. And this is someone I used to get stuff for every time I came back from Canada. I went out of my way to help them when they were looking for unis etc.

The sad part is, I wasn’t even surprised because in the recent years this persons behaviour had really changed. And not in a good way.

Taking Out The Trash

Why am I talking about these incidents? It’s not for pity or sympathy, I have no need for either. I’m sharing this post because I’ve had so many incidents like this one in the last couple of years. And last year in particular. I’ve realised that when we begin setting strong boundaries, some people aren’t going to like that and will act out due to it. And some people just grow up and change. Which is fine, everyone is different.

But for me, when someone behaves badly towards me I take note of it now. And when there’s a pattern of it, I’m actually thankful. Because I see it as the universe taking out the trash for me. I’m able to see the signs and set boundaries accordingly instead of always going out of my way for people. People who are neither thankful nor giving me the same energy back.

So next time someone behaves badly towards you or does something hurtful, try thinking of it as taking out the trash. Be thankful you saw their true colours.

Let me know your thoughts about the post below in the comments section because I would love to hear them. Or simply stop by and say hi!

I recently published my first book and would be honoured if you took a minute to check it out here.

  1. Excellent, Pooja. You need to set up strong boundaries for you and you did it. People like the one you described that talks over you and says Can you just get to the point? I would be done with that person. I don’t hand around with loud, obnoxious people. They just make me angry. distance from them is the key!

    1. I totally agree and feel the same way. I can’t stand obnoxious or condescending people anymore either. It’s best to avoid anyone who doesn’t make us feel good!

      1. You got right girl! 🤙🏻❤️❤️

  2. I love how you call it the Universe taking out the trash for you. That’s so good!

    1. That’s how I’ve been looking at it, thank you!

  3. Great thought-provoking blog post and extremely relatable! This is the kind of stuff that cuts deep and often hurts us the most, emotionally.

I’ve had incidents similar to yours, and have been trying to process it and move past it in a positive way. Luckily, with time, self-help, naturalpathic medicine etc. I’ve been able to break some negative thought-loops and think about this stuff much less than I used to. But rumination and getting stuck in negative thought-loops (best way to describe this awful feeling) very real and valid. The worst part is that these thoughts creep right back up at random times when we think we’ve moved on….

Sending lots of virtual Canadian hugs your way! 🇨🇦

    1. It does hurt so deeply and I’m sorry you’ve experienced that too. The rumination is honestly the worst part, it makes moving on a million times more difficult. I feel like I spent most of last year ruminating and it sucked but I’ve noticed distracting myself when the rumination starts helps a lot.
      Thanks, hugs! 🤗

  4. At some point you just have to stop and think: I am going to respect myself starting today. Whatever it is that makes you think that is a good occasion, possibly not the most pleasant or enjoyable but in the long run today is the day to respect yourself. And let the haters hate

    1. Yes, exactly. We’re doing ourselves a huge disservice when we don’t set boundaries.

  5. I used to give people too many chances, hoping my love and caring for them would change them or the situation. I learned the hard way that wasn’t going to happen, and that I hung in because I was seeking validation from them in some form. I thought that the reason they came back repeatedly was because I was doing good, but I was wrong about them. Letting go is sometimes the best thing we can do.

    1. I can relate, that’s how I was too and still am sometimes. It’s about validation and the fact that we feel a lot of empathy, people really take advantage of that.

  6. Thank you for recommending the alchemist’s excellent post. It can be constructive to look at things that hurt, such as experiences against us or our loved ones in the past (recent past), though it can be hard as well. And I think you mention living on the edge of something difficult. Treating others as you would treat yourself and yet being on the wrong side of those who cut the equation at first factor, so to say (treat myself the way I want to treat myself and then forget the rest). Sigh. I admire the endurance and the growth in you.

    1. Yeah, it definitely hurts especially when it’s fresh. Living with someone that behaves in that way is difficult but I’m here for my parents, they need me right now. So I have to ignore everything else happening. Thanks so much.

  7. I’ve just had the worst experience of my life- finding out who a person is after knowing them their entire life. 47 years. I thought of them as one person and they turned out to be someone else. Very disorganized and disrespectful; and yes, lying is their mo. Here’s the thing though, they believe the lies they tell. They live in a fantasy. I’m working on a book/post about it. On the other hand- I just want to let it go and try not to think about it. Because it’s a downer.
However, writing is what I do. And thinking. Writing is thinking. Forbidden in their world.

    1. I’m so sorry, I truly know that feeling and it really sucks. Yes, very often they do believe their own lies and have a very distorted view of things. It’s sad but there are some people you just can’t help. All you can do is wish the best for them and move on with your life.

      1. For me, it was very expensive, emotionally, spiritually, economically, and also time wise. I need help now-to recover in all aspects. They see themselves as perfect people; I was the problem.
I think it comes down to personality; and there are millions of people around who have disorders-undiagnosed and of course won’t seek help. The rest of us suffer because we care- they don’t.

        1. Yes, I was just telling my therapist the other day that a lot of us are in therapy because other people refuse to do so.

  10. I hate the “I’m sorry but….” apology, it’s not an apology. And yes, this is all very relatable.

    1. Exactly, it’s not a real apology if you make excuses.

  11. Dealing with people is hard. Sadly, dealing with people also means knowing when to stop dealing with them and that usually only happens after incidences like the ones written about here.

    1. Yeah, unfortunately so. All we can do is distance ourselves when we realise what the person is really like.

  12. I agree with the sentiment. Too often we allow people to mistreat us in the name of family or friendship, but eventually something has to give. Now more then ever, it’s time to choose peace. And it’s time to choose ourselves.

    1. Definitely. At some point we have to set boundaries and put ourselves first.

  13. A few months ago, I had a falling out with someone I’ve been friends with for twenty years. I realised she wasn’t the friend I thought she was. It hurt when I found out she’s to call for a hangout with our other friends and leave me out. It hurt more when she invalidated all my effort and hard work to be financially independent.

Yes losing a friend is painful, but like you said, I’m glad I saw her true colours now rather than later. And yes the universe definitely did take out the trash for me. Great post Pooja and you are absolutely right, setting boundaries is very important.

    1. I’m so sorry you went through that. Being excluded can be so painful and triggering. Being financially independent is so difficult and if she invalidated your hard work it’s honestly very likely that she’s jealous or feeling insecure and projecting that onto you. Thanks so much.

      1. Thanks. It was a tough time for me then but I’m better now.
I guess you’re right. I’ve set my boundaries and I’m okay with where we are.

        1. I’m really glad you’re doing better now, boundaries are vital even if they can feel foreign sometimes.

  14. Ah yes… the unpredictability of some people. If they show you who they are, believe them.
But I don’t let them change who I am. I just understand the new boundaries and respect it by respecting myself.
You have learned to value who you are.
I try not to take people’s behavior personally anymore.
Lesson learned, and I move on.
    Thanks for sharing this, Pooja.

    1. For sure, when someone starts acting weird around me I’ve learnt to keep my distance and set boundaries instead of excusing their behaviour. True, we can’t let them change us but we do have to make sure they no longer use us or treat us badly. Thanks so much.

      1. Agreed.. we learn to separate ourselves and secure our peace. 🙏

  15. I love this post, because it’s so relatable! I’ve had similar incidents, as well, and when it finally dawns on me I’m wasting my time and efforts, I walk away. Taking out the trash; you nailed it!

    1. Yeah, unfortunately so many of us have experienced this and honestly all you can do is move on and live your best life despite them. Thanks!

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja.

It’s hard when someone you did so much for doesn’t reciprocate. Glad you have found a way to make peace with it.

    1. Yeah, it sucks especially at first but now I’m thankful I saw their true colours early on.

  17. Congratulations Pooja. These days half of all mental illness is people worried about someone else’s actions. You can’t toss out your family, but laugh at their actions. 🤣😎🙃

    1. Yup, totally agree!

  18. I’m sorry this happened to you! It’s not fair when people say stuff like “Get to the point” and then expect you to listen to them. I’ve learned it’s way healthier to get rid of (or as you say, which I love, take out the trash) toxic people. You’ll have a better peace of mind. Family, friend, coworker, whoever — if they are toxic they don’t belong in your life.

    1. Yeah, it sucks but I definitely prefer someone’s true colours early on. Agreed, toxic people should be people we keep our distance from.

      1. Try not to let negative people ruin your day! If you ever need a friend, don’t be afraid to reach out.

        1. Thank you, so appreciate that!

  19. As the saying goes – when people show you what sort of person they are, believe them! This is very true and we should be grateful to them for showing their true colors.

    1. Yup, absolutely!

      1. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

  20. I’m sorry people are so self-centered they don’t even realize they are being hurtful. I’m glad that you are strong enough to move on.

    1. Thanks so much. Unfortunately some people are that way, all we can do is keep our distance.

  21. Being free of toxic people is priceless for one’s mental health. I’m really sorry this happened.

    1. Agreed. Thanks so much. 💗

  22. Your post is a great reminder of the importance of boundaries. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Yup, boundaries are very necessary. Thanks so much.

  23. First, thank you for recommending my blog, Pooja. 🙂 Second, thank you for being so honest and vulnerable about what you experienced.

I’m sorry you went through that. But I love the quote, “Taking out the trash.”

As Maya Angelou says, “When someone shows you who they are the first time, believe them.”

And it’s true. When someone shows me their true colors, I’m done with them. They’re just a little speck of dirt on the back of my shoe. I’m not thinking about them anymore.

    1. You’re most welcome, the post really resonated with me. Thank you and yes totally agree, that’s the attitude I have moving forward. If people are going to act weird or toxic I’ll be keeping my distance.

  24. Yes, a reminder that setting boundary is essential self-care! We are all learning this together…by respecting ourselves, we give others permission to do the same and we are all healthier for it! Great post Pooja! 🙂

    1. Yes, so essential! Thanks so much 🙂

  25. Great reasons for setting boundaries, indeed. Your post reminded me a little of a book I’m reading, ‘The Let Them Theory’ by Mel Robbins. It’s very good. My son referred to it today as “a modern take on Stoicism” and I thought of you right away!

    1. This is such a crazy coincidence but I’m reading ‘The Let Them Theory’ by Mel Robbins too, I actually mentioned it on Chanel’s post that I linked. A friend sent me a copy and I’m liking it so far. Definitely similar to Stoicism where were believe we can only have control over our own decisions and actions.

      1. Ha, no way!! I only just read Chanél’s post now (missed the link the first time!), and she’s spot-on about the two philosophies. It’s a great post, thanks for sharing the link.

The book has been illuminating and, having heard Mel speak on her podcast and shorts, I hear her voice when I read it!

        1. Agreed, Chanel did a great job with the post that’s why I thought I would share it and add my own thoughts/experiences.

Ooh that’s interesting! I honestly had never even heard of Mel before the book but that’s cool that you had seen her podcast/shorts!

          1. Yes, my sweety saw and heard her and has been playing them a lot. That’s how we got on to the book.

            1. Oh okay, that’s great.

  26. I wrote an editorial many years back titled “In defense of dissent.” Strange title you may think and wonder what it has to do with your comments. My point in the article was you’ll always have annoying nit picking either from enemies and sometimes from friends. Instead of being offended its good to listen to what they have to say as it reveals opinions about you and what you do and while most are not healthy enough to take seriously it does give one pause to learn what others think about you and what you are doing and to reflect on whether this is a shared opinion by others that needs correction or better publicity about self and your goals. Criticism or nastiness can be distasteful but in administration its going to come anyway and its good to know what others think so you can either take action to make changes to self or the program at work some find distasteful or be aware of any dangers to your position and standing and see it neutralized. However I’ve found enemies of yesterday can be supporters tomorrow and visa versa as that’s human nature. I was always careful to see supporters were in the majority and doing favours for former enemies can sometimes help reverse their previous opposition and win them over. Yes we do need barriers so we are not walked over but the occasional churlish remark from someone is not worth the effort of responding to. 🙂

    1. Yeah, I can imagine in that field of work you meet all sorts. Agreed, boundaries are a must. 🙂

  27. I believe we’re to love everyone. I also believe there are many people who should only be loved from afar.

    1. Yup, completely agree.

  28. It reminds me of that Maya Angelou quote “when someone shows you who they are believe them” but thinking of it as ‘taking out the trash’ is far more suitable to my personality, hahaha. Glad you’re finding ways to protect your peace.

    1. Yes, exactly and “taking out the trash” works for me too lol. Thanks so much.

  29. I have experienced each of the things you described and it does not matter who was right or wrong, it is difficult to shake off the gut punch when it comes as such a surprise. The best I can do is avoid getting too close to people once I discover that they are not that interested in me.

    1. It does hurt no matter what and I hate when people make excuses for their behaviour because being stressed out isn’t an excuse to hurt others. Yes, I think all we can do is keep our distance from people like that.

  30. I have felt pain like that in similar circumstances, Pooja. It leaves a hurt and a hole behind….but with some of them, I realize that once the ‘trash was taken out’ the hole can actually heal instead of being dug into over and over again.

    1. It definitely does hurt but I agree, once we keep our distance we start the process of healing.

  31. Everyone will hurt us at some point, and we will hurt them. I look at the whole relationship. The people who have my back, who love me the way I am, and try to help as much as possible, are excused for little human actions.

    1. Yeah, I think that’s totally fair. If it’s a cycle where someone is constantly hurting you, that’s when we have to step back.
