What’s Going On With WordPress?

How WordPress Works | I'm done with WordPress | Things I Would Change About WordPress | The Random WordPress Changes Are Far From Random | Six Word Story| How To Create An Algorithm Friendly Post | Features I Wish WordPress Had | Today, I want to ask you guys to share your thoughts about WordPress. How do you feel about WordPress as a blogging platform?

It never ends, does it? I wanted to post something totally different today but I feel like I need to address the elephant in the room first. I’ve read multiple posts about this. Apparently, a lot of people are randomly losing subscribers on WordPress out of nowhere. That includes me.

I have no idea what’s happening but my subscriber count is constantly fluctuating even though I’m gaining like a few followers a day. Sometimes the number keeps going down and then suddenly it’ll increase by 10-100 followers when I’ve obviously not received those many follows in one day.

It’s so frustrating because this has been happening since WordPress shifted to Jetpack stats which in my opinion are quite inaccurate. I honestly have no idea how many followers I have right now because it’s constantly fluctuating from one extreme to another. And when you ask, they say they’re getting rid of spam/bot accounts but then why are people telling me they’ve had to refollow my blog multiple times and WP keeps removing them as a subscriber. Also, why am I having random jumps in followers too if they’re just getting rid of bot accounts?

This is what happens when you try to fix things that weren’t broken to begin with. And when you replace your human staff with AI.

I already woke up on the wrong side of bed today and now I’m even more pissed off. Urgh. *Deep breaths*

Is this happening to anyone else? Let me know in the comments.

My first novel, Perfect, is now available for preorder on Amazon. If you would like to read it, please click here.

  1. Sadly things are changing in other places too. There is so much to look at then what a person can take in

    1. I totally agree.

  2. Good or bad, AI is everywhere. But I’ve found a few places in WordPress where it starts bringing up prompts for Gemini now…

    1. Oh okay, that’s interesting. Yeah, I think AI is very much here to stay. It just bugs me when customer care is replaced by AI because I don’t want to waste ages with generic unhelpful responses lol.

  3. Hi Pooj, I have had to re-follow at least two blog friends lately as I was wondering what happened, that’s not many and my own site stats haven’t changed at all I am guessing because I have very few followers.

This probably doesn’t help you but I hope that your stats return to normal soon. You are so right, you can’t replace humans with technology in many ways because the technology just can’t think like we do. Bots suck! 🤬

    1. I’ve had to re-follow a number of people too and I can no longer see the images/videos on your posts on the Reader so I have to go to your site manually.
Absolutely, humans can’t be replaced and the fact that they’re trying to do that with AI is weird and messed up!

      1. It’s all about money for these corporations and it’s gross. Not sure why you can’t see things but the actual site is better than that reader thing. I’ve never used it.

        1. But the reason they’re making money is because of us users, I don’t get why they don’t understand that and see the value in our input. Yeah, it’s not a big deal I just go to the site now. The Reader is VERY glitchy.

          1. Thanks for viewing the site proper. I find the reader to be very bland looking.

            1. Yeah, it’s gotten worse over the years using the Reader.

  4. THIS! Because, that part!

“This is what happens when you try to fix things that weren’t broken to begin with. And when you replace your human staff with AI.”

This has been happening for months. I have to resubscribe to a few people consistently, and I’ve seen a few do the same with my blog.

It’s aggravating and should not be happening.

Also, if I BLOCK a user and their blog, how is it now that they are still able to like my blog posts?! They’re blocked, I should not exist in their feed/reader, let alone see any further activity from them.

WordPress is smoking crack these days. *Sighs*

    1. Same here, it’s so annoying to have to re-follow people so often. Wow, that’s so weird about blocked people still being able to see your posts. What’s the point of the block option then? WP needs to stop making stupid changes and actually fix the stuff that’s broken.

  5. Irritating for sure! But I’m so excited about your novel – such a huge accomplishment!

    1. Aw thanks so much!

  6. I had no idea this was happening. I’ve noticed an increase in bots subscribing to my blog though.

    1. Yeah, bots are definitely increasing these days.

  7. I follow people I want to read but I rely on the WordPress emails as my only source to notify me when they post. Sometimes someone likes or comments on my Blog and I wonder why they haven’t been posting. I click their icon and am shocked that I have been missing all their recent posts even if it says I am subscribed. I hit the subscribe button but that message seems to imply that I dropped them and only re-subscribed because they liked my post. Very annoying. I read and follow several Bloggers that never read my posts so I am not very vigilant in noticing when someone disappears.

    1. Yeah, having to re-subscribe is annoying and could give them the feeling that you only did that because they liked your post. I don’t know why that’s happening, it never used to be an issue before.

  8. i noticed some nonsense going on there but i choose not to give a damn, i mean does it really matter all that much? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yn3ViE6mhY hugs

    1. It’s nothing a little music can’t fix 😉

      1. I wanna ask what’s going on in the world and who can fix it for us?

        1. Sigh, at this point I don’t even know if it’s fixable.

          1. You are exactly right. I hope for the better anyways

            1. I do too but some days it’s hard to stay hopeful. I’ve been trying to avoid social media because I just can’t deal with the negativity right now.

              1. You and me both, I even wanted to disappear from all the platforms but my therapist didn’t recommend it. Btw I found a great therapist , she is so very helpful

                1. Oh yay, I’m so glad. A good therapist is life changing.

                  1. Yes, it’s hard to find. She is my old friend, turns out she is changing her career from medicine to psychology. I’m glad to be her guinea pig lol

                    1. Interesting. My therapist used to be an engineer and is now a therapist.

  9. There was at least one or two blogs that I had subscribed to, and then later I’d find out that I was somehow not subscribed to them (even though I did not unsubscribe to them). So I’d subscribe to them again.

    1. Yeah, it’s so weird to have to re-subscribe when you didn’t unsubscribe in the first place. That’s been happening to me quite a bit for the last year or so.

  10. 🙏🌹

    Aum Shanti

  11. It is happening to me too, Pooja. Over the past week I have lost a lot of subscribers.

    1. Oh no, sorry to hear that. I have no idea what’s happening with WordPress these days and it’s hard to get an answer from customer care.

      1. That is so frustrating.

        1. It is, I’m hoping to talk to someone from WP about it soon.

  12. I have not noticed a change. Pro tip, I put body pillows on the left side of the bed, that way I always wake up on the right side 🙂 Have a great week.

    1. Haha, I may have to start doing that too. Have a great weekend.

  14. It happens every day- + – 5-10 followers every day

    1. Yeah, it’s so bizarre.

      1. Very much so. Perhaps WP is removing bots from our lists.

        1. I think so, that’s what the WP person said today.

          1. I have been stuck at 8300 followers since a couple of years. It goes up and the back to 8300. And in actual fact, only a few hundred people follow my blog, and less than 50 engage with me. So I think these numbers are nice to look at, but actual numbers of followers is in hundreds for me.

            1. For sure, I think the amount of activity on the blog is what’s more factual in terms of numbers.

              1. Yes, I think so too.

            2. I agree, it’s almost an arbitrary number. I have about the same number of people I interact with. I spent one afternoon deleting followers, but that is a waste of time, too. 🙂 xxx

              1. Yes, it surely is a waste of time. We should only count people who interact with us as our readers.

                1. Hugh wrote about deleting some of these extraneous people. However, that is time-comsuming, and they are not dragging on my account as far as I know.

                  1. I block if anyone is posting needless comments. Otherwise I let them be.

                    1. Good point. I haven’t actually blocked anyone yet. 🙂

                    2. It’s easy enough to do from a laptop. On phone, it’s a bit lengthy process

                    3. So far, I haven’t needed to. I do block calls on my phone. That is easy for me on my phone. But that’s different than blocking people from my blog.

                    4. Very true! Blocking people from calling or texting has been made very easy now. And nothing on WP is easy.

                    5. That’s a pretty disgruntled statement, Sadje. That’s not like you. You must be very frustrated.

                    6. It’s a fact because people keep on calling for donations, getting insurance, selling stuff and other things that aren’t needed at all. So I am constantly blocking them. 😂😅

                    7. Do you have a premium subscription to WordPress? That helps. I don’t get any of that because of WP that I know of. Premium takes out all the advertizing.

                    8. Yes I have a paid subscription so there are no ads( hopefully) on my site. I pay $8 per month and usually pay for 2 years at a time, and that is slightly cheaper.

                    9. I think that’s what I have, too.

                    10. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

I have not really noticed other than one subscription I had to do that I was sure I had done in the past. I don’t really look but I will check. I have seen notes where WordPress has added AI to automate things but that is kind of the fun so I did not bother to use it.

    1. Yeah, sometimes we have to resubscribe even if we didn’t unsubscribe which is odd. Yeah, the notes are fine. The issue I have is when I want to chat with a happiness engineer but only get AI and waste time because it keeps giving me generic, unhelpful answers.

  16. Yes, I saw Maggie posted something related to jetpack recently, and zi also get these surges in stats that are ghostly. I had over 600 visits one day, which is highly unlikely and totally out of the norm, and yet there was no location given for this surge in viewers. I have lost a few followers and then gained several. I’ve given up on jetpack stats.

    1. Yes, I experienced those surges too. It’s so bizarre. I had a bunch in December but it seems to be back to normal for now. Jetpack stats are honestly the worst. So inaccurate.

      1. Pure propaganda 🤣🤣

  17. yep, the whole unfollow thing has happened to me recently and some of the people I follow.
It just means that I can’t trust wp to keep track of that any more. I do believe that the “lists” on the reader don’t get messed with, as you’re technically not subscribed to them. I’m thinking of keeping a list of links somewhere and checking it against my wp subscriptions every couple of months 🙁

    1. Yeah, the lists work fine. I have a list with the blogs I regularly interact with and that’s how I found out I had been unsubscribed from some even though I hadn’t actually unsubscribed. Also, for whatever reason your gravatar doesn’t lead to your site anymore. I get an error message now.

      1. shoot! thanks for the heads up. I will have to investigate this weekend I guess 🙁

      2. I just tried it and it’s working for me. I went to your site on chrome and scrolled down to my comment. When I clicked on my name, it did go to my site. In the wp reader however, there are no links when I hover over my, or anyone’s, name. Great. 🙁

        1. Maybe just an issue on my end for a little bit because now when I click your gravatar it does lead to your site. So weird. Yeah, the links have been gone for like a month now in the comments section 🙁

          1. Bleeping wordpress. Well, I’m off to bed. I can’t deal with their bs any more…

  18. Ugh, I know what you mean, Pooja! I’ve been having some wordpress issues, too, lately, although why your subscriber numbers keep changing is a strange one. Hope things settle down soon!

    1. Yeah, there’s been so many glitches lately. So annoying! Thanks so much!

  19. It happens to me all the time, too.
A lot of followers disappear, and many unknown ones join, some of whom haven’t even published a single post yet.
Is WordPress doing a major spring cleaning?

Congratulations on the publication of your novel.

    1. I honestly have no idea what’s happening because some of the followers they’ve removed are real people not bots. They’ve had to re-follow my blog because of this.
      Thanks so much. ☺️

      1. What a mess!🤗🤗🤗

  20. Something sketchy is definitely going on. I remember years ago when I had a a twitter account it was quite simple and easy to gain a following. Now on most social media sites I use I rarely get followed and if I do get followed it’s by spam bots. This makes using sites such as WordPress way less appealing and only makes it harder for people to use and promote the platforms.

    1. Yeah, spam bots have become way too many on the internet and on every platform. It’s taking the fun out of it.

  21. I don’t have many subscribers so when I lose a handful it is very noticeable. I have lost quite a few in this past month, I didn’t know that others were going through this to. Thanks for letting us know Pooja

    1. It’s so strange how so many of us are randomly losing followers all of a sudden. I feel like it’s not normal for that to happen. But honestly, what can we even do about it. Thanks for sharing your experience too. Hopefully, WP will fix its stats soon.

  22. My subscriber situation is so weird that I hardly pay attention to it. I get notices of subscribers but then a few days later it’s exactly the same follower count as it’s been for… a long time, give or take a few. I don’t dare care too much about that, but there’s the feeling that if i ever got my act together and began to be consistent, it would be very stressful paying attention to WP’s ‘collaboration’.

    1. I have the same issue, despite getting more followers the number stays the same and then it starts dropping and randomly it’ll increase again by a huge amount. It’s so weird. Yeah, it’s stressful when you keep up with the stats. But these days I don’t take them too seriously.

      1. I feel like WP users work hard to keep it feeling like a community.

        1. Agreed, many os us stay for the community.

  23. Actually, I didn’t tell you so but I had to refollow you. Your site seemed to be unsubscribed?
A deduction in followers? Yes I’ve seen it too and thought maybe because I was inactive for almost 6 months. But yeah you’re right, the Wp staff is getting weirder they’re lacking creativity and they should hire people like you or so.. lol

    1. That’s so weird. Multiple people told me they’ve had to re-subscribe to my blog. Yeah, a lot of us are seeing a deduction in followers this month. I have no idea what’s happening with these stats. Lol yes, I agree haha.

  24. I have only 50 something followers. But I am also observing it.
The numbers keeps changing for no reason.

    1. It’s so weird, I wonder why that’s happening. They should really fix it.

  25. This is happening to me too, Pooja! It’s crazy!

    1. Oh no, sorry it’s happening with your blog too! I really hope WP does something about it because people keep telling me they’ve automatically been unsubscribed from my blog 😓

      1. It’s beyond frustrating!😠

  26. It was the same all year till a day or two ago (dropped 10) … I can’t math the mathing, but will never unfollow you 😉 !!! You are like one of my fav souls / writers / bloggers in life – here … When WordPress starts its tricks again and stats refuse to stay,
Followers vanish by the dozen, then return the very next day.
I’ve lost count more times than I can say – the numbers simply won’t align,
But if the algorithm’s haunting us … at least the ghosts are yours and mine.

And truly, no glitch can dim your shine <3
your readers find you every time ~ 😀

    1. Same here, my followers dropped all of a sudden a couple of days ago. So weird!
Aw thanks so much, I would never unfollow you either! Aww that’s such a sweet little rhyme 💗

  27. oh I did hear it from other bloggers too ! WP is Weird .

    1. Yeah, the stats are so unreliable these days!

      1. Now I am also experiencing weird stuffs on my site .

        1. Oh no, hopefully it’ll go away soon. Some of these glitches resolve themselves in a few days.

  28. I’ve had to re-follow some people, too. Very annoying.

    1. Definitely so annoying!

  29. I haven’t encountered any of those problems, though I have heard of them. I did have to “argue” with an AI agent recently, repeating my issue very clearly several times before being connected with a very helpful human. It is sad that so many companies are going all-in on AI despite the dire future it promises.

    1. Yeah, it’s annoying to get the same generic answers several times from AI before being able to actually speak to a human. AI is not the way to go, especially with customer care.

      1. Exactly.

  30. We should respect people throughout the process, recognizing AI as any other technology invention–it is an assist, not a replacement. And we could actually save both expense and inefficiency by not applying updating simply because we think we’re supposed to be. Sigh. I’m sorry for the strangeness and the inefficiencies. Do you think real WP people are hearing and responding?

    1. Yes, I think that’s absolutely it. AI should be here to assist humans not to replace them. Especially with jobs where AI is neither needed nor helpful. I think they’re hearing the complaints etc but I doubt that they care.

  31. My follower number hasn’t fluctuated much, probably because I haven’t been posting a lot lately. However, I know that a lot of my followers are still bots.

    1. Yeah, there are more bots than ever before on WP.

  32. It’s a mess, for sure. I’ve been trying to get problems resolved with them for years- lots of talk, no resolution. But, I love to write, and read. Lots of good content here. But the whole “like, follow, subscribe, comment, stat“ thing is crazy making. Totally unreliable.

    1. Yup, most of these glitches are here to stay and I feel like WP doesn’t know how to fix them either. It’s best to ignore the stats and just focus on blogging for now.

  33. Well some of the ones who subscribe to anyone’s page are advertisers seeking to promote their wares indirectly and rarely make a comment. Some just close their accounts with WordPress and disappear that way. My blogs on WP are picked up on FB and LinkedIn so a lot of people view through those sites even though they may not comment back on WordPress. I don’t know why your stats fluctuate that way but I never look at the stats anyway so probably wouldn’t know if they do for me.

    1. That’s true but I’ve also noticed a lot of my real subscribers being removed. I’ve had a number of people tell me they’ve had to re-subscribe despite never unfollowing me.

      1. I wonder what the purpose of that is?

        1. Honestly, no idea. Most likely some sort of glitch.

  34. Very nice.

    Hopefully they get it fixed.

    1. I hope so too.

  36. Last year my traffic suddenly dropped to under a tenth of what it had been (for the whole year) with no reason. Last December it suddenly started coming up again and is again running at a reasonable level. No explanation.

    1. I had a very similar experience. It’s all quite odd.

  37. I havent actively checked how my subscriber numbers are flactuating but I have noticed that I find that I am no longer seeing some blogs in my reader feed only to see that I am somehow unsubscribed.

    Something is definitely afoot.
    ~B

    1. Yeah, I’ve had that issue too. I have no idea why that’s happening but I do hope they resolve the issue soon.

  38. Excellent post

    1. Thank you so much.

  39. Hi Pooja, I’m Rob and I work on the WordPress.com team. I wanted to respond to your post and to all the comments here.

The subscriber count drop you saw was caused by a one-time database cleanup we ran in late March. We removed subscriptions tied to WordPress.com accounts that had been deleted or abandoned for years. Your actual audience was not affected, and your email delivery numbers should be unchanged.

We should have communicated this proactively to affected publishers before the numbers changed. That’s on us, and I’m sorry for the alarm and frustration it caused.

On the second issue: several of you are reporting that you’ve had to re-follow blogs you were already following. I know that it’s very frustrating. We’re investigating it now.

I’ve also sent you an email separately, Pooja. I’d love to hear more about your experience and how we can make the product better. If anyone else would like personal followup, respond to this comment and I’ll email you.

    1. Hey, thanks so much for taking the time to read and respond. That honestly means a lot that you’re taking what users have to say seriously. Thank you for explaining the cleanup. Will respond to the email as soon as I can. Have a lovely weekend.

  40. Nice response but.. it changes all the time!!!.

    1. Yeah, it’s super frustrating!

  41. I don’t pay much attention to my subscribers so I’m not sure?
Where I’m having trouble is with the reader….I usually scroll back to the last post I read and continue forward from there (chronologically), and the reader decides to jump back to the latest post each time I read someone’s blog. Beyond frustrating.

    1. Oh geez, that sounds so annoying to do every single time. Hopefully, the glitch will go away. At the moment, I’m having an issue with commenting on some blogs and I can only comment when I go to their site manually. Not on the Reader.

      1. @P.J. That’s annoying. The comment form is missing? Is it on web or mobile app?

        1. It keeps saying “This site requires registration to comment. Visit the original post to log in or create an account and join the conversation.” on the Reader for some sites regardless of whether I use my phone or desktop. Like this site for example: https://wordpress.com/reader/feeds/87325236

      2. Yep, that was happening to me too…and I had to sign in each time I visited their blogs. Knock on wood, the reader is not kicking me back to the beginning any longer. Yay!

        1. Oh good, at least that’s gone. The comments thing is annoying too!

    2. @Dawn is it still happening? We fixed that bug a few weeks ago, but it sounds like maybe we missed something.

      1. @Rob, thank you. I restarted my computer this morning and so far, the scrolling feed is working the way it should. Thank you! The bug that I’m still having is that the “full post” option for the reader (which I prefer because of the way I use the reader) still doesn’t let me click into the blogs. I can scroll the list, move through pages, but when I click into a blog, sometimes it will let me select the first one, but then won’t move to another, but other times the reading pane stays blank and it doesn’t even show the blog I clicked on a selected.

      2. Thank you!

      3. The other thing that’s happening is that on posts I always read in the reader, it won’t let me comment directly there. There’s a new ‘warning’ that says “This site requires registration to comment. Visit the original post to log in or create an account and join the conversation.”
I’m already logged in on my blog but it won’t let me comment in the reader, and when I go to each of their sites, I must log in each time.

      4. Ok, @Rob it’s still happening. Not every post, but randomly. I can read a few posts, then suddenly I click out of one to go to another and it jumps me back to the beginning of the reader again. 😢

        1. Yikes! I’m sorry this is all happening. I’m sending you an email so I can get some more details and work on fixing these.

  42. I hear you! When I lose subscribers, my subscriber count stays low and never balances out, as you may expect from gaining new accounts.

    1. Yeah, same here. It’s weird because despite getting a lot more followers my following count hasn’t gone up in like a year.

  43. Stats are fun and interesting, but very misleading. The most important thing to me are comments, and the value that is in the comments. I could have 6,000,000 views, but if I have 50 or 60 good comments for a post, I am over the moon. Even comments are a hard measurement. Each one takes time and thought to answer, so if you spend less than one minute on each comment, how much impact are they making? Some people leave long comments, like the ones I see on this post. The you really have something of value.

    1. I totally agree. I think comments are one of the best parts of blogging and truly show the people that are engaging with your content. Minus the spam comments or AI comments of course.

      1. Most of those are weeded out. I don’t know if I’ve ever have gotten an AI comment.

        1. I get a lot of AI comments these days, it’s a little annoying. One or two have even had the prompt in it haha.

          1. Maybe I don’t recognize them, but I know most of my commenters. I visit people that comment, so if they are people who don’t have a blog, I have ignored them.

            1. That’s probably it. Most of the AI comments on my blog are from random people.

              1. I don’t get too many random people. That’s a help.

  44. […] What’s Going On With WordPress? […]

  45. Couldn’t agree more. With all the above… it’s getting worse

    1. Yeah, it’s not great but I do think they’re trying harder to listen to users and make positive changes accordingly.

  46. Let’s hope. I had a following of just shy of 50,000. They changed the format i lost everyone couldn’t reconnect because they gave paid for accounts to random users and ppl had to fight to get access back. I quit because I was so disillusioned at losing hundred of salt of the earth men and women. I couldn’t afford the new upgraded cost and a friend informed me they’re was a free version do I came back. Still minus everyone I knew. Starting over but still finding pplb worth knowing. Just smaller in numbers ☺️

    1. Oh no, that’s awful. I recently lost over a thousand followers when they did their last update and honestly it did suck. But glad you’re back and yeah the free version is good too if you’re not ready to invest in a paid plan.
