I had a different post planned for today but read about Gloria Steinem’s passing and wanted to share this post. Believe it or not, I actually hadn’t heard of Gloria Steinem before I got to university. During my third (maybe second?) year of university, I took a course about the sixties which focused on the rise of counterculture and the new left movement.
It was one of the most interesting courses I had ever taken. And it was one of the first modern American history classes I took which I think made it more special. Everything was so new to me. That’s where I first learnt about Gloria Steinem and she was featured on one of the documentaries we watched during the course as well.
More recently, I’ve once again found my interest in history of the 60’s and 70’s interest reigniting. I’m part of a local book group that offers affordable thrifted books and one of the books among some I’ve bought from it was one by Gloria Steinem.
In a somewhat cruel ironic twist, it’s the book I decided to pick up to start reading today:
She will be remembered for all that she did. It’s not easy to stand up for yourself and so many others when that’s so out of the norm. It’s not easy to go against the grain. RIP.
