One Sentence Story:
In the mirror she saw everyone but herself.
About The One Sentence Story:
This one sentence story was inspired by something I’ve actually been experiencing and an illuminating conversation I had with my therapist. When we’re born, we’re pretty much a clean slate. We haven’t conformed to society yet. We don’t know what’s right or what’s wrong. What’s good and what’s bad. We just exist.
As we get older, we are often poisoned by those around us. I’ve talked about this before but for those of you that don’t know, I grew up chubby. I wouldn’t say I’ve ever had a particularly large body, I was just always chubby and have a rounder/bigger face. I never had an issue with this. However, for whatever reason a lot of people felt the need to point it out to me. Random relatives, neighbours, other kids etc. Literally so many people so much to say about how I looked. And it was overwhelming when I was younger.
Growing up like that and experiencing people constantly talking about your weight/looks can be so damaging. And I was telling my therapist about how I hate how I look. And she explained to me that often we see ourselves through the lenses of others and they project their own insecurities/opinions onto us. That’s why when I look in the mirror I see what people negatively described me as. Not who I actually am. And that’s what this six word story is about. Sometimes we don’t see our true selves in the mirror, we only see other peoples versions of us.
Edit: Also, don’t fat shame kids. Like wtf is wrong with people. As an adult if I saw someone tell a kid what people told me I would straight up sock them in the jaw. Even as a pacifist.
Interestingly enough, I read something about this topic on Lauren Scott’s blog (Baydreamer) today right after I finished this post. Take a look at it by clicking here.
