Doctors Gaslighting Patients: What Really Grinds My Gears

What Really Grinds My Gears

As some of you may know from reading my blog posts for the last few months, I have visited a lot of doctors this year. Especially in the last half of the year. And one thing I have noticed is that some doctors really like to gaslight their patients. They make up their mind about the diagnoses without even hearing you out. And then try to gaslight you about your symptoms. And it’s not just in Kenya, I’ve read so many stories about doctors gaslighting patients all over the world.

Just to be clear, I don’t have an issue with all doctors. I think many of them are great at their job. But there’s also a good amount of doctors that are not great at their job, don’t listen to patients and don’t make proper diagnoses. Unfortunately, I had an experience like that yesterday with a doctor I visited and although I was frustrated I couldn’t help but think this would make a great “What Really Grinds My Gears” post lol. So today, I will be whining about doctors gaslighting patients.

Doctors Gaslighting Patients

As I mentioned, I went to the doctor yesterday. And it was a dermatologist. So, I was trying to describe the symptoms to him and what I thought the issue was but I soon realised that he had already made up his mind about his diagnoses. Even when that meant ignoring the symptoms I was pointing out to him that I had made the appointment for. He just kept cutting me off and wouldn’t even let me finish what I was saying. I started getting very frustrated and I usually shut down when that happens.

But I was irritated enough that I remembered I was a strong and smart woman and I was not going to let this doctor mansplain things to me while ignoring the symptoms I actually came to talk to him about. So, I kept insisting we get rid of my symptoms first and eventually wore him down. And this man had the audacity to say, “fine, it it’s bothering you so much I’ll prescribe you something for it.” Um, sir?? Of course it’s bothering me, that’s literally why I came to see you!

Oh and another doctor I went to see recently (not a dermatologist) asked me why I may be experiencing what I was experiencing and when I mentioned I had a stressful life she literally went “you’re so young what are you stressed about? Wait till you get older and have real things to be stressed out about.” And she said it super sarcastically while rolling her eyes. So young people aren’t allowed to have stress?? I do have a genuinely stressful life right now and although I don’t want to go into details about it on this post those that know me know how difficult my life is. And to dismiss my feelings like that is so rude and uncalled for.

Conclusion

Thank you for listening to my rant as you always do. You didn’t think a blog called Lifesfinewhine would be all rainbows and sunshine, did you? So yeah, these are some crappy experiences I have had with doctors. And I wish they would change their attitude a little to be more empathetic with patients and what they’re experiencing.

Also, to be clear, I have had some great doctors that have really helped me. It’s just a couple that have pissed me off and I needed to rant about it somewhere. And since my next therapy session is in January I felt like this was the next best thing lol.

  1. Oh that is so frustrating. Congrats to you for standing up for yourself.

    1. Yeah, I was very annoyed but glad I stood up for myself and got him to address my symptoms.

  2. Fortunately I have never had a bad experience with doctors and I owe my present one my life for his early cancer warning signs that have kept me clear.

    1. That’s so lucky, I’m so glad you caught the signs early.

  3. John Oliver has an amazing video on bias in medicine. And I recently learned that “medical gaslighting” is becoming a mainstream term. I can always tell if a doctor is gaslighting me because I just feel super uncomfortable and don’t even want to talk. And it’s not just in consultations that it’s a problem either. It’s been shown that women who have male surgeons have worse health outcomes post-op, but the trouble is SO many surgeons are male!

    1. Yeah, my sister and I were talking about “medical gaslighting” too and I’m so glad more people know about it. It’s true, I’ve read about that too and it really sucks because like you said so many surgeons are male so sometimes you have no other option.

      1. Yeah, I know other women who make sure that if they have a male surgeon that they really trust him because of the stats on how bad it can be

  4. You are saying precisely correct, Pooja!! It’s so annoying and frustrating. I am facing so much like that because of my daughter. I can understand your pain. Take care of yourself, and bless you 😊🥰🤗🙏Beautifully written words👏💯Good explanation 👌

    1. Thanks so much. I’m so sorry you’ve faced this too and I hope your daughter is able to get the help she needs from a good doctor. 😊

      1. Thank you so much for your emphatic words, Pooja😊🥰🤗🙏🙏

        1. You’re very welcome ☺️

  5. This has been the topic of discussion today with some friends and I. I’ve experienced the same. It’s super frustrating. I just encourage you and anyone who has been there to continue to advocate for yourself!

    1. I’m sorry you’ve experienced this too and yes absolutely. We need to make sure they listen to us.

  6. 🌞 Sunny days and cheerful attitudes! In this golden sunshine, it’s important to remember that everyone has a story. Just like you, the doctor you encountered also has a journey they’re on.
Sometimes doctors wear white coats and fancy hats, but deep down inside, they’re just regular humans too. They might be dealing with their own health issues, work stress, or even a rough day. It’s easy to forget that doctors have emotions too!.

In the dimly lit hospital corridor, the weight of the white coat seems heavier tonight. Behind the stoic façade, the doctor contemplates the haunting echoes of a life lost in their operating room—a patient whose heartbeat faded despite every effort. Perhaps they’re haunted by the face of another, recently diagnosed with the unforgiving grasp of cancer. Doctors, those healers in sterile attire, carry the burden of human fragility on their shoulders. Tonight, as they gaze into the abyss of what couldn’t be saved, it’s a poignant reminder that behind the mask, beneath the sterile gloves, beats the heart of someone who carries the weight of loss and despair. They, too, are human, navigating the emotional labyrinth of their profession.

    1. I understand where you’re coming from and I think being empathetic to others is important. However, empathy is not always the solution. When you’re a doctor, you literally hold someone’s life in your hands. Your negligence could literally kill someone. I went to a dermatologist at a medical centre that does not perform the kind of surgery you described. He did not see me out of the kindness of his heart. I paid my very hard earned money for that appointment and waited in line patiently for hours. I don’t care what sort of day he had because it’s not my job to comfort him and sympathise with him. If he had a bad day he should have taken the day off (an option all doctors at that medical centre have because multiple doctors I have gone to see there have taken time off and rescheduled my appointment). That way he could have seen the patients including myself when he was prepared to properly listen and diagnose us. He could go for therapy with the amount of money he earns to deal with any negative emotions arising from his work situation. But instead, he chose to neglect what I was saying, did not let me finish a single sentence and continuously ignored any symptom I was trying to describe to him. Yes, doctors are human and have bad days but it’s not fair to take that out on their patients no matter what the circumstances are. Medical gaslighting and negligence kills people everyday even when they have a chance of survival. Medical negligence is the reason my mother can barely walk anymore. I had gone in with something that was not too serious but what if someone goes in with symptoms of skin cancer and he ignores them too as their dermatologist? Are we still supposed to have sunny days and cheerful attitudes about it? Medical negligence is not a little issue, it’s a huge one and doctors need to have consequences to their actions just like everyone else.
And by the way, he seemed pretty cheerful and happy when he cut me off mid sentence to encourage me to start a noninvasive medical procedure with him that would cost 30,000 per session that I would have to do for the rest of my life.

      1. I get it—doctors can be hit or miss. Some mess up, and it’s sad, but there are awesome ones too. Sorry if I’m being nosy; I just can’t help but say what I think. 🥺🤗👨‍⚕️

        1. Yup, absolutely some doctors are great and some just aren’t. That’s why I said in my conclusion “Also, to be clear, I have had some great doctors that have really helped me. It’s just a couple that have pissed me off and I needed to rant about it somewhere.”
          No worries lol 😜🤗

  7. I know exactly how you feel. I am overweight, everything from an ear infection, to my asthma, to an injury on my wrist and a cyst on my cervix is apparently purely down to my weight and my weight only! Amongst other things. Basically become skinny and you will find miraculous recovery in everything!

    1. I’m so sorry to hear that and you’re so right. My weight was above the BMI when I went to see my gynaecologist the first time and she kept encouraging me to lose weight even when my weight wasn’t causing the issue. It’s crazy how the medical field blames everything on weight even when it’s clearly not the cause. I mean, they weighed me when I went to my dermatologist too which is so weird. And yeah, they think being skinny solves everything except sick and unhealthy skinny people also exist. I wonder how they explain that lol. Anyway, don’t worry about your weight. As long as you eat relatively healthy and have a healthy lifestyle the number on the scale really doesn’t matter.

  8. It happens all the time to people here as well. When we go to a doctor, we seek reassurance in addition to treatment. If the doctor doesn’t give importance to what we say, then neither of the purposes of the visit are fulfilled. It’d be highly unlikely that people would go to that doctor again.

    1. Yeah, unfortunately medical negligence and medical gaslighting is so common everywhere. I will definitely not be going back to this doctor.

      1. True my friend. It also indicates a lack of professionalism

        1. Absolutely, it’s incredibly unprofessional.

          1. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

  9. Doctors! Sheesh! We must remember they are “practicing medicine!” We are the guinea pigs! I actually had a nurse practitioner nearly kill Child #4. The kiddos suffers from severe migraines and has been on medication for them. (Some of her first words were “Ow! Ow! Ow!”) This woman kept putting her on more and more antidepressants. When her psychiatrist found out she was really angry! Yeah. Great work!

    1. Also, they don’t get to play God just because they went to medical school. They need to listen to their patients and make an informed decision. Wow that is so incredibly unprofessional, I’m glad her psychiatrist put a stop to it!

      1. Me too! I can’t imagine life without her!

  10. Good grief, Pooja! Is there a board of directors or other entity that you can file a complaint with regarding these two doctors? That is absolutely ridiculous. I can usually tell with one or two visits whether or not I will continue to visit a doctor. I hope you don’t go back to these doctors.

    1. Yeah, I was thinking of filing a complain about the first one. The second doctor is actually a really good doctor despite being rude so I’m just going to let her comment go. Will definitely not be visiting the dermatologist again.

      1. Sorry about this. I hope you find the right dermatologist, Pooja.

        1. Thankfully, I got the prescription I needed so I won’t have to look for another dermatologist right now (or preferably ever).

          1. Good news, Pooja! 🥰

  11. UGH this is super frustrating! Before even reading your full post, I was going over my own bad experience with a dermatologist I had a few years back as well. Literally my one and only appointment because it was so terrible!! Not to mention how many doctors ignore issues/symptoms us women have because even men and women show signs of strokes and heart attacks can be so drastically different! Glad you stood your ground on what was bothering you because only you truly know what’s going on in your body!!

    1. That’s sp awful, I’m sorry you had a bad experience too. It’s so weird because the two really bad experiences I’ve had with doctors recently were both with dermatologists as well. What’s is going on with them! That’s true, for a lot of illnesses women and men show different symptoms and not to mention some drugs don’t work as well for women as men or women may experience more side effects from them. Thanks and yeah we need to stand up for ourselves!

  12. This is so bad.. the only stranger that people believe is a doctor blindly. Its sad to see Doctors decide on their own and act carelessly to their patients.

    1. That’s so true, doctors are people too and shouldn’t be listened to blindly.

  13. Good for you!!!!! Stand your ground and don’t let anyone mansplan anything to you. That is so annoying.

    1. Thank you, yes I’ve decided to do just that from now on!

  14. I hear you, Pooja! There are some really good and empathic doctors, but there are a few who can improve their bedside manners and check their arrogance. I’m so glad you stuck your ground and insisted on the doctor attending to your symptoms. You go, girl!!

    1. Absolutely, I think there some great doctors out there but some awful ones as well. Thanks and I’m glad I did that too because it was the only way he would have addressed them!

      1. Good for you for standing your ground!! It takes courage to stand up to doctors and to say what you need to say, because sometimes they have this aura about them that they know it all.

        1. Thank you! Yes, it was tough but had to be done.

  15. Surprisingly, this being important, In all professional courses, lessons on professional morality are taught in one of the semester. Thanks.

    1. I agree and that’s why professionals are taught about morality but it seems some ignore those lessons. Thank you.

  16. My beef is with that second one, lol😤how dare she! Gaslighting in any situation is so annoying. And yeah you’ve been stressed a lot this year. You need a holiday, “doctor’s orders” 😜🤗You’ve reminded me about the one doctor I saw this year after catching a bout of malaria. He was drawing another patient’s blood while talking to a colleague and while he’d invited me in as well. The needle sort of jammed in the vein, and it was a very messy affair. I hightailed it out of that hospital and found a clinic🏃🏾‍♂️

    1. The second one is actually a great doctor, just super rude lol 😫
Oh wow, that’s so awful. When I got malaria in Uganda, the doctor was really nice and she went out of her way to comfort me since I hate drawing blood 💕

  17. I challenged a doctor’s prescription once and suggested some alternatives that I read about. He told me not to believe everything on the internet. (I used Mayo clinic and WebMD websites) He then brought out a medical book about 4 inches thick and handed it to me. He told be to look it up in there and let him know what I wanted to do because he didn’t have time to keep up with everything in the book. I learned a lot and he took my suggestions that I found in the book.

    1. I’m glad he at least listened to you and took your suggestions. I wish more doctors would do that with patients. It’s supposed to be about communication.

  18. Well yes!
    It’s same everywhere

    Many doctors are money focused
Or they think that they are the doctor and they know everything.
Many doctors are not interested to listen to at all.🥲

That’s why i avoid going to doctors 😝

    1. Yes, unfortunately so! This doctor was so money focused, I could tell. I try to avoid doctors too but sometimes it’s inevitable 😣

      1. Hmmm

Most of the doctors are money focused
        Hard to find real ones.

        Love such posts
Another reason why I’m whinning today. But your whinning is always truth 😁

        1. Haha thanks 😅

  19. It’s a power thing!

  20. Hmm . Most doctors are on that quota. Making numbers for big corporations. In the old days your family physician knew you and actually spend a few minutes just taking shop. Now it’s in and out..take two Tylenol for everything.
But I’m proud of you for demanding that you be heard. You’re the one spending the money to have your concerns addressed..to your satisfaction. 💙💜🙏

    1. Yes, absolutely. The medical field has changed these days and has become more about profits that helping people. The older doctors I visit listen so well while the younger doctors are quick to shoo away patients. Thank you 💕

      1. Welcome PoojaG

  21. I should have gone to my doctors recently, but I changed my mind, unwilling to experience exactly what you describe. I shall probably write her a letter, that way she can’t interrupt!

    1. I’m so sorry to hear that. Bad doctors really end up traumatising patients sometimes. Yes, write her a letter or ask her firmly to let you finish speaking first.

      1. I think I will try not to sink to her level…

        1. Yeah, I guess that’s best.

  22. Ughh, that sounds horrible. Thankfully, Mrs B and I have been blessed to see doctors who actually listen to us and in turn explain to us why they are making the decisions on our health that they are. You have my sympathies…

    1. Yeah, it sucked and was kind of a new experience because usually I have had great doctors. I’m so glad you two have had such great doctors and hope you never have to experience any bad ones like I did recently.

  23. The doctor-patient relationship should be one of trust, respect, and open communication. It’s essential for doctors to listen to their patients’ concerns and symptoms thoroughly before making a diagnosis. Thanks for sharing this important issue in healthcare—gaslighting by doctors.

    1. I very much agree. If you can’t openly communicate with your doctor that’s a big issue. Happy to share it as I know many people have experienced stuff like this before.

  24. second opinions
    and home remedies eh?

    1. Nah, I kept telling him to address my symptoms till he finally did. So I got the prescription I needed.

      1. mebbe just another yet symtom of the universe then.

      2. not many charles boyers around are there Pooja? lmao!

  25. I think that’s just how those two doctor practice. If they’re doing that that means they’re bad at their job. The first step is listening to the patient. That’s the first thing we’re taught in medical school is history taking.

    1. I agree, not listening to your patient makes you a bad doctor. That’s literally your job, to listen to them and then diagnose them. The second doctor is actually good but just rude.

  26. How frustrating, Pooja! Those in the medical profession should be caring and professional. It seems the caring part is lacking. I hope your issues will soon be resolved. 💖

    1. Yes, I was so annoyed and it was definitely unprofessional of them. Thankfully, I kept insisting he address my symptoms and got the medication I needed so I hope I’ll be okay soon.

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja. I hope you will be okay too and soon,

        1. Thanks so much.

          1. You’re welcome, Pooja.

  27. I can relate to your experience. Some doctors don’t listen. As you say, they made a diagnosis and don’t listen to what you say. I hope you figure out your health problems, Pooja. We have to be our own detectives.

    1. Yes, unfortunately some doctors are very unprofessional. Thankfully, he did eventually listen so I hope I’ll be okay soon.

  28. It’s a problem all diagnostic positions have, not just doctors. Mechanics always “know” what’s wrong with your car before they even look at it, sometimes resulting in thousands of dollars due to their mistakes, lol.

Even in my own life, I am often certain what someone’s technological issue is before I even look at it. We’re reinforced by the fact that 99% of the time, we’re right. But when confronted with evidence to the contrary, the more intelligent of us can admit we’re wrong, maybe your doctors should do the same!

    1. True, I think when you’re really good at something you tend to assume you know best but of course you should be able to listen to others and change your mind if need be.

  29. ha, ha. Yep. A quote from Keith Richards (famous guitarist of The Rolling Stones): ‘Some doctors told me I had only six months to live, then I went to their funerals.’

    1. Lol yeah, I’ve read that one before and it’s iconic.

  30. “I remembered I was a strong and smart woman and I was not going to let this doctor mansplain things to me while ignoring the symptoms I actually came to talk to him about”

    Good!

      1. Keep staying strong, my friend.

  31. I’ve found that they don’t encourage you to give any input, dismiss anything you suggest and treat you as a customer rather than a patient. The pharmaceutical companies have replaced the care element in favour of the profit margins

    1. Absolutely, they’re really black and white about it. You are just supposed to sit there are listen even when it’s supposed to be a conversation not a monologue. It’s definitely more about profits now than helping people.

      1. If you haven’t already there’s a documentary called “Prescription Thugs” that’s a great watch. It’s on one of the streaming apps. A lady who was a pharmaceutical rep said it’s “disease management and symptom maintenance”. Check it out if you can

        1. Wow, that sounds interesting. Will definitely check it out.

          1. That’s a link to the trailer on YouTube

            1. Got it, thank you.

  32. I can completely understand your frustration with some doctors. I think that some are only in it for the paycheck. Some medical staff can be just as bad when it comes to not listening to the patient. Yes, some patients can be annoying to some staff but a lot of patients know their own body well enough to know when something isn’t right for them. And lack of time with a patient has become an issue too now. There used to be a time when the doctor had time to talk to you and be able to answer all concerns. Now your practically a number, you’re quickly seen and then pushed out the door. And then about the doctor pointing out that you are to young to have stress… I guess she had a perfect childhood then cause I didn’t. That was rude of her.

    1. Yes, it’s really frustrating when some doctors don’t listen. And yeah even though some patients are annoying it’s still their job to help them. True, I’ve noticed that recently they just want to quickly diagnose you and push you out of the door.
True, not everyone had an easy childhood or has an easy adult life. It’s tough for some of us and it’s sad when a doctor dismisses that.

  33. You are not alone Pooja, doctors are people so they can be frustrating. And they fail you more than an average person because you tend to rely on them. Last time I came to see my doctor she literally didn’t want to look at me, she send a PA to take pictures and said next time go see any other available professional because she is too busy. Okay. I did it and it turned out the best thing ever. The guy helped me out with an issue that was bothering me for years. Anyways, long story short, doctors are a pain in the rear because you rely on them too much. Some of them are pain relievers and it’s inspiring. Best case ever is to never get sick so that you don’t have to rely on them. Idealistic, I know…

    1. Wow, that’s incredibly rude of her. I’m so sorry you experienced that but so glad you got a better doctor that was able to help. Haha yeah, trying very hard to not get sick again I’ve had enough of doctors for a while.

      1. I feel you. Right now I’m very happy with things are

Yeah, had a doctor sit and explain what I was on. Ignored my problems experienced with it….Some are great and some aren’t.

    1. Wow, sorry you experienced that. Very unprofessional of them. Absolutely, some doctors are great, some are good enough and some are just bad.

  35. Of course, you have a stressful life. That should be respected, especially with regard to healthcare. I’m glad you held your ground with yesterday’s doctor, though you should have been listened to from the start. Lately, I have found the medical folk I’ve encountered to be thankfully attentive, hearing what I have to say and asking more than once if I have further questions. I’d like to say, and will say, that nearly all my medical folk these days are like you, strong and smart and female. Though you encountered that female doctor who clearly thought her stress was preeminent. Sigh. Service industries, professions, disciplines–let them serve. Let them choose to serve. Serving is good. I’d like to think that as an educator I know. Well, know something. Happy solstice!

    1. Happy solstice!

I’m so glad you have found helpful medical folk. It’s a blessing to have them by your side when you need them. The female doctor who was rude to me is just rude in general but actually a good doctor who has helped me a lot. I think she wasn’t even trying to be rude or anything she’s just eccentric and doesn’t know how to communicate well. But the dermatologist was just bad at his job. I mean, he didn’t even bother letting me finish a sentence. Thanks!

  36. True, some doctors do lack bedside manners. I had one that always felt like the enemy, me against her. Of course, she had to go.

    1. Yeah, at that point you just need to change your doctor.

  37. I am so sorry that you had this experience. How frustrating. I have had similar experiences with doctors, the gas lighting. I’m living in Ontario, Canada, and sadly it happens regularly out this way. Thanks for sharing this type of awareness.

    1. Thanks and yes it’s very frustrating. I’m sorry you experienced that too. When I was living in Ontario I had good experiences with the medical staff but my sister had a pretty bad one with one of the doctors. Hopefully doctors will begin to work harder in the future when it comes to listening to patients.

  38. Very true. I don’t know what it’s like there but Here in the US I have changed doctors several times for them not listening 🤣😎🙃

    1. Wow, that sucks. It’s not too bad here. I think I’ve only had a couple of bad experiences recently but the others have been okay.

  39. I must say, thankfully, I have not experienced that with any of my doctors. It is worrying and frustrating that they aren’t taking your symptoms or what you are saying seriously.

    1. That’s really good, I hope you continue to have good doctors because the bad ones can be so frustrating.

  40. the problem here is that the government have treated the medical profession so badly that doctors, the ones that continue to practise are swamped. they have minimal amount of time to do a diagnoises. The doc I had was amazing, but he gave up, closed his practice, and now I keep looking for one that understands what I do and doesn’t immediately tell be to stop running no matter the problem….finding that doc you an trust is a lot of work and takes time, I know that….I have a pretty good of professionals around me, a physio, masssage therapist, dentist….but now no doctor. don’t always need one, I go only when I absoloutely have to or have broken something….when I fractured my head, I had a lof of good help….but you want to trust

    1. That’s awful, I’m sorry to hear that. We have both private and public doctors here and the one I went to was one practicing privately. Sorry your doctor stopped practicing and I really hope you find another good one.

  41. Just come back to WP after a long pause and love your post. It is so true that you point this out. I have an acquaintance who believe every single word the doctor told her even if she took what was prescribed to her and got sick from the side effect. I have told her that she has a female Asian body and may not be really suitable for many drugs that are given to her. She won’t believe me, but she trusts her doctors 100%. I have had parents, teachers, doctors, administrators gaslighting me many times, telling me what I observed was inconsequential or wrong. Wait, I should say many books and movies do that too, perpetrating stereotypes of women while telling women what they experienced are invalid.

    1. It’s so nice to see you here again, I’ve missed our conversations. That’s really sad but unfortunately a lot of people blindly follow everything doctors say and that actually leads to a lot of health issues because doctors don’t always know what’s best. And yes, some symptoms are different for WOC and some medications may have different and worse side effects for them. True, a lot of books and movies are like that. Especially those written by men who don’t fully grasp what being a woman is like in reality and yet feel the need to preach to women about how to exist.

      1. Hahaha!!! Hohoho!!! Agree with you 100% since I’ve met such people who have a lot to say about what other people’s life should be like. Merry Christmas and thank you for being an inspiring figure and saying insightful things. Wish you the best!!!

        1. I think we all know people like that which have so much to say about others even though their life is a mess. Merry Christmas!

  42. Sometimes, people don’t think twice how they are reacting to others. I can relate to this because I’ve had the same experience though not with a doctor. Good wishes to you 🌻

    1. I absolutely agree. Thanks so much and sorry you’ve had similar experiences but glad it’s ever been with doctors 😊

  43. Finding the right doctor is really a hit or miss. I feel like a lot of doctors feel like they know everything and hate hearing when they’re wrong etc. You must listen to your patience’s to not only understand what they’re going through, yet to also build a solid relationship with said person.

    1. That’s so true. A lot of doctors do have that attitude. Thankfully, the majority of the doctors I’ve gone to have heard me out and it’s only a couple that didn’t.

      1. Yeah. The majority is normally better. I know several people who have had terrible experiences with like nurses. I’m very grateful for my medical staff. They’re all like family to me now 🙂

        1. You’re lucky to have found good medical staff, that’s not always easy to do 🙂

  44. Not being heard, rushed and improperly diagnosed is a sign of our times of over burdened, ineffective health care. Sorry to hear but the norm these days, sadly❤️

    1. Yes, you’re absolutely right. I truly hope something changes soon ❤️

  45. Wow, those are two awful experiences, Pooja! Good thing you have a place with 26,000 friends to vent to! I agree with Cindy’s comment about medical systems; same thing in Canada though I am super fortunate to have found a new family doctor after the one I had for over 35 years retired. Primary health-care is so important.

    1. Haha yes, thankfully I have the perfect place to vent! I think so too, I think doctors are very overwhelmed and at the same time some of them have a bit of an attitude issue as well. So glad you found another good family doctor. Absolutely, we rely on doctors so much.

      1. Attitude… the world needs less of that!

  46. Another lousy side effect of the drive-thru/self-serve world we live in nowadays. Sadly, it is not limited to the medical field. In an effort to increase profits, turnover and output, many businesses have adopted this mentality.
A friend of mine recently had a phone appointment with a NP for a medical issue that was bothering her which lasted 5 minutes (or less) and yielded no answers other than “you should be fine”.
Should be??? Thanks for your time.
They didn’t even bother with the token “Call us back if symptoms persist” tagline. Probably hoping desperately that she wouldn’t call back.
If you find a doctor/service/etc. that treats you with respect and dignity, hold onto them – they are clearly worth their weight in gold.

    1. I SO agree with you. I’ve had similar experiences too. It’s like they don’t even care anymore and just want to diagnose us as quickly as possible. It’s really sad too since medical negligence is a serious issue.

      1. It truly is. My primary doctor retired a few years ago, and since he’s left, I haven’t found one that actually cares to listen too intently.
Part of the blame goes to insurance companies as well, in my opinion. They are so concerned with profit and cost that they often push doctors and hospitals to process people in and out ASAP. Not to mention they will do anything they can to deny covering a procedure.
I’ve seen people that had no right being discharged from the hospital get pushed out the door and end up right back in the ER the next day because they are still very ill.

        1. Yeah, I partially blame insurance companies as well as pharmaceutical companies that put profit before peoples lives.
I’m sorry you’re experiencing that and hopefully you find a good doctor soon.

          1. Yes, you’re spot on. Big pharma definitely plays a huge part as well. Maybe even more so than the insurance companies!
I’ve made out ok for the most part. For me it’s more an annoyance, thankfully. The ones I feel for are the people who have very serious conditions and can’t receive proper care.
That said, thanks very much, and good luck to you also!

            1. Thank you so much! True, I can’t imagine how hard it is for people with serious conditions or things that are incurable. Having to deal with crappy doctors every few days can’t be easy.

              1. Unfortunately, it happens more than one would hope. A close friend of mine had to take his wife about 90 miles one way, three times per week, for cancer treatments because the doctors here couldn’t/wouldn’t do anything.
They told her she needed emergency testing when they suspected cancer and then put her on a wait list instead of even trying to schedule it.
She had to call daily to try and get in, hoping for a cancellation. She finally got one and they said her cancer was so aggressive that a few more weeks she’d have been stage 4. Thankfully, she is now doing very well, but only because of her own refusal to accept status quo.
                Sorry for the long post!

                1. Wow, that is so awful and quite negligent on the doctors parts. I’m so glad she’s recovering but it’s awful that patients are treated like that. I mean, they could have at least tried to get her an appointment as soon as possible.

                  1. Yes, they didn’t even attempt to help her unfortunately. Thankfully, she was smart and tenacious enough to advocate for herself or things could have been much worse.

                    1. Yes, I’m so glad she was smart about it and kept calling. But it really shouldn’t be on a patient to do that. Why make it so stressful for someone who is so ill. Medicine is really not about helping patients anymore.

                    2. No, it shouldn’t be on the patient, especially with all we have to pay for medical care these days.
But it’s just another moneymaking machine, same as any factory or fast food joint in most cases.

                    3. True, healthcare isn’t as expensive here but definitely not cheap either. Absolutely, most industries are all about making profits now.

                    4. I’m a realist and I understand that money makes the world go around and all that, but some things should be non-negotiable. like healthcare and access to decent food.

                    5. Yes, I feel the same way. Healthcare, food and shelter and basic needs. And I don’t even think people would mind paying a decent amount for healthcare if they got good service. It’s just so disappointing to pay so much and then not be treated properly.

                    6. 100%. The majority of folks just want a reasonable value for their money, which applies to most everything. No one wants to feel ripped off.

                    7. Exactly and after paying for something you shouldn’t come out feeling ripped off. If only they put a little more effort into actually taking care of the patients.

                    8. You got that right. And sadly, “a little more effort” would feel like a massive step forward in this day and age.

                    9. Yeah, even the bare minimum feels like a lot.

                    10. Yeah, and most try to make you feel like it’s your fault for asking too much. Pathetic, really.

                    11. It’s like a lot of doctors and medical staff think they’re superior and know everything which is an awful attitude to have.

                    12. They do say God complex is an occupational hazard in that line of work. I’ve only run into a few that were really bad about that, but the ones I have…not fun.

                    13. Yeah, it’s true. Most doctors I’ve met are slightly holier-than-thou but most still listen and try to understand. I’ve only met one or two that were really bad and yeah it’s awful.

                    14. Same here. Even some of the ones who seem to not listen or argue a bit at first will usually lighten up if you can use a little finesse. Or a sledgehammer. Both can be effective in the correct setting lol

                    15. Yeah, once they realise you’re not just wasting their time most doctors do try to listen but some are just awful once in a while. Lol true, it depends on your mood really.

                    16. Oh there are definitely some real pieces of work out there. They’ve always been around, I’m just not sure if there’s more these days or it’s just more noticeable lol

                    17. I think it’s both gotten worse and more noticeable which isn’t a great combo lol.

                    18. No, not at all. That’s a terrible one-two punch LOL

  47. It is so saddening to know that you had a gaslighting experience, and that too from a doctor 😥 more power to you, brave lady ❤️

    1. It’s absolutely sucked but I’m just glad I stood up for myself and got the prescription I needed ❤️

      1. That’s great 👍🏼✨

  48. It’s like they don’t want to take the time to get to the heart of the issue. They give you the first diagnosis that comes to mind and moves on to the next patient. At least that is how I feel. It feels like I spend more time in the waiting room than the exam room.

    1. Exactly. Some doctors don’t even want to fully hear you out. They just assume your diagnoses and push you out of the door. I feel that way too. I spent ages waiting for my turn only to be ignored and it wasn’t till I put my foot down that he even addressed my symptoms.

  49. I have experienced this. It is so frustrating

    1. It really is.

  50. I always read these posts in Peter Griffin’s voice. Lol.

I share your agitation re: some doctors, though. I think a lot of smarter patients (the ones with WP blogs, no doubt) probably suffer from the doctor being bombarded constantly with patients who are… maybe not so bright. It probably takes a while to realize the person speaking to you has valuable insight that’s worth hearing. My theory is primarily born out of the wildly divergent way that I get treated in a doctor’s office based on how I look that day. Dusty with short hair and in business clothes is treated very well. Dusty with long hair, beard, and a Carhartt jacket… not so much.

    1. I write them in Peter Griffin’s voice so makes sense lol.

I agree, I think you’re often treated differently depending on how you look and not just at a doctors. However, I feel like it’s worse when it comes to medical care because it’s their job to listen even if they disagree or the patient isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed.

      1. I completely agree. I fired my primary care doctor over how badly his PA treated me earlier this year. Mrs. Dusty Reviews attended the appointment with me and was *outraged* on my behalf. When it’s your job to interact with patients, you need to make *some* effort in that area.

        1. Wow, that’s so awful that you were treated badly by his PA. True, listening to the patient is the bare minimum. I would have been mad too.

          1. It was crazy. I’m not old, but I’m not young, either, and she was straight up scolding me like a child (for a scheduling thing that was actually her fault.) About halfway through our appointment, she started to hear herself and toned it way down, but that did not come along with an apology.

I usually try to think of a way to excuse bad behavior. “Maybe she’s just having a really bad day.” At a certain point though, sometimes the best thing you can do for someone is to let them experience the consequences of their actions.

I guess that whole thing grinds my gears, too. I wish I could do a good Peter Griffin impression. I’d use that in the middle of the situation as it is happening.

            1. That’s really rude of her. I don’t think she should be scolding patients whether it’s their fault or not. And I feel like in most cases I could excuse it with “maybe she’s having a bad day” but when it comes to medical stuff people need to act professionally no matter what. Patients are already going through stuff and don’t need the extra stress.

Lol, this is your sign to practice your Peter Griffin impression.

              1. The internet is amazing. I found a tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6hlL81NnDs

                1. Omg, I love that there’s a tutorial for it. Now you can finally perfect your Peter Griffin voice!
