The Midnight Strangler

The Midnight Strangler

The writer sat at his desk, typewriter in front of him and his best friend Jack Daniels at his side. For years, he had tried to write the perfect murder mystery. Something that no one would be able to solve before reading his concluding chapter. It drove him to the brink of madness.

His friends, his wife and even his children could take his obsession no more. He was consumed by the idea of writing the perfect novel and yet the words always eluded him. He studied every serial killer, every dictator and every murder mystery novel he could get his hands on. Day and night were spent reading till his eyes were red and sunken. And yet, he could never find the inspiration. None of them were good enough. He needed better. Someone that no one would ever suspect, a murderer so great that they would speak about his work for years to come. A murderer who would cause fear, confusion and unrest. One that would make his book truly unique.

One night, he sat in front of his typewriter and once more felt like he was being mocked by the lack of words. It was like the perfect story was inside him, he just could not quite reach it. Abruptly, he stood up and grabbed his coat. He stepped outside and took a deep breath, letting the cold winter air feel his lungs. He kept walking the empty streets, not many people were out this time of night in the snowy weather. As he continued to walk, in his sleepless and drunk state he heard someone call to him.

“Excuse me, sir?”

He turned around and saw the most beautiful pair of eyes looking at him.

“I believe you dropped this,” she continued, handing him a notebook.

He quickly took his notebook from her and shoved it in his pocket. She smiled and turned around, walking away from him. Before he knew what he was doing, his hands were on her neck. He kept pressing till he felt her go limp and the last breath left her body. For a few seconds, he just stood there in shock. His hands were shaking and his breathing was uneven but he felt a calm wash over him. He felt better than he had in years. Quickly, he almost ran back home and locked the door. For a month he stayed inside, wondering if anyone knew what he had done. Every morning he woke up in fear. Thinking the police were going to find out it was him. But it never happened.

Ending 1

He sat before his typewriter once more and couldn’t stop writing. Finally, he had found the words. The perfect murderer did exist after all and it had been inside him all along. He had actually gotten away with it.

If only he had not been so distracted by his own typing, he may have heard his window open and the quiet footsteps of the woman behind him with a knife in her hand. Not only had she survived his attack but had one of her own in mind. He was so preoccupied with himself and finding the perfect murderer that he hadn’t even realised he had already met one on the street that night. Never even questioned what a woman was doing all alone in the crime filled streets in one of the worst parts of town. Too self-absorbed to see the little specks of blood on her coat.

Although he never did finish his novel, he did have the pleasure of meeting the perfect murderer. In fact, she was so good at what she did that no one ever discovered a single body. She wasn’t mentioned in any history books, studied by psychology students or even talked about in the newspaper. Well, to be fair she was in the newspaper once. But that was only because she won that pie baking contest. Can you guess what her special ingredient was?

Alternate Ending:

They did mention something about her death in the papers and that it was being investigated but in a few weeks all was forgotten. His life went back to normal. Well, to an extent. He was no longer afraid of being caught. And no longer lived in fear.

He never did finish that book he had been working on. But he did discover the perfect murderer, who knew that it had been inside him all along? And just like that, one of the world’s most notorious serial killers was born. To this day, there has been no progress in discovering his identity. Even a century later, years after his death, his murders are studied by thousands of people each year and yet they are no closer to uncovering his true identity. They just call him The Midnight Strangler.

About “The Midnight Strangler”:

This is my response for Kevin’s NTT post this week. Shoutout to Kevin for hosting these weekly and inspiring so many bloggers to create awesome stories and poetry based on his images. Do check out his blog. I absolutely loved this image and knew I had to write something for it. Mostly because that’s exactly what I look like typing like a maniac in the middle of the night, working on my manuscript. Which also happens to be a murder mystery lol. Switch the typewriter with a laptop and change the dude to a 26 year old Indian woman and you’ve got an actual image of what my night looked like yesterday lol.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this story. It has some twists and turns which I had a lot of fun with. To be honest, I wasn’t concentrating on writing the perfect story but instead just had fun with it. For the ending, I came up with two endings because I didn’t know how to end the story. So, I added both endings and you can decide which one you like best. I prefer the first ending.

Which ending was your favourite? You know I love your feedback on my posts so do let me know what you thought of “The Midnight Strangler” in the comments below. Or simply stop by and say hi!

  1. Well-written and a great read.
    Thank you and Stay safe.
March break is coming looking forward to it. March 11-15! 🇨🇦 .

    1. Thank you so much. Have a very fun break!

      1. You’re welcome and Thanks. Stay safe and well.

        1. Thanks so much.

          1. You’re welcome!

  2. I cannot decide which ending I like better, because they both are great. I love it when people just let loose and have fun with these things. Great work, Pooja! And if I ever happen to meet you, I will make sure it’s not at night in a bad side of town. Lord knows where I’ll end up if you look like that when you’re writing! 😄

    1. Thanks so much, these are always fun! Lol, yeah you may want to avoid me in dark alleys 😅

      1. We’ll meet in broad daylight, crowded street. Perhaps a sidewalk cafe or a street food kiosk?

        1. Ah yes, somewhere with lots of witnesses lol.

          1. Indeed. And if I go missing, people will notice. Gorillas dressed in tees and jeans tend to stick out in a group.
            Just saying…

            1. Lol that is true… 😅

  3. So good!

    1. Thank you!

  4. My head is twisting like the exorcist and it sounds like Kevin’s is too.. Lol..I certainly will wear a tracking device from now on as I wouldn’t want to meet you in a dark alley.. lol. Sounds like you’ve found your calling.. Hahahaha😂. 💓

    1. Lol that’s fair ahah 😅😅

  5. Pooja, I’m curious which ending you prefer?

    1. I like the first one best, what about you?

      1. Yeah, I’m more a fan of the first as well. 😊

        1. It seems like most people liked that one best as well. I guess I just need to go with my gut when it comes to stories haha. Glad you enjoyed that ending too.

          1. I mean, it’s a little less diabolical than the alternate… 😏

            1. Haha yeah, that’s true.

  6. Excellent story with two great endings. I thoroughly enjoyed. The NTT prompt does look great. Alas 🕰️💕

    1. Thank you so much, it’s definitely a fun prompt but I understand- prompts can get time consuming 😫

      1. My site as of now is actually set up to respond to prompts, but writing time in general is very scarce. Your site has so much more than creative content so you inspire me that it’s more than possible for me to do more💕

        1. Yeah, time is generally an issue for us bloggers but it’s definitely possible. Keep writing 💕

  7. I liked the first ending because it was a classic Pooja ending. 🙂

    1. Thanks, I thought so too haha.

  8. It’s a terrific story, Pooja! Both endings are really good drama. First does sound like your trademark mystery.

    1. Thanks so much! I preferred the first one too for that reason haha.

  9. That’s a great short story. Suspensful and yet very short. I liked the ending with the woman coming back and stabbing best. It was clever and with Karma.

    1. Thank you so much. I preferred that ending too. So glad you enjoyed the story.

  10. Interesting story Pooja! I like both endings.

    1. Thanks so much, so glad you enjoyed it!

      1. You’re most welcome 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

  11. I like ending one best! Poetic justice.

    1. Thanks and my favourite too!

  12. Who’s the goddamn writer of this??
    Wanna acknowledge her
    Genius dammit.

This story reminds of a novel that I read, I want more.

    His book never got finished
    even after killing or dying.

    You are the perfect writer.

Hey I never asked, have you born in India?
Or like you were born in Kenya?

    1. Haha thank you, glad you enjoyed the story!

Born and raised in Kenya, never been to India (yet). My family has been in Kenya since the very early 1900’s. So we’re all born here.

      1. Oh interesting!

  13. Most intriguing! I like the first ending better.

    1. Thanks so much, the first one seems everyones favourite!

      1. Definitely. Both are great, but the first is more satisfying and gives the chance for a second antagonist (protagonist?) to take stage.

        1. Yeah and I like that the twist is even less expected since you sort of expect him to get away with it.

          1. It could even become cyclic. Does she fell to a prey of her own and so own.

            1. Oh true, it can become a cycle that creates a series of murders and murderers.

  14. The story!! 😍😍😍 but the first ending!! 😘😘😘

    1. Thank you!! ❤️😊

  15. I love it Pooja, such suspense… I like both ending but the first one is my favorite. You are a wonderful writer… Thank you for the share!

    1. Thanks so much, so glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, I think most people enjoyed the first ending the most. Including myself lol.

  16. Oh, this is so good, Pooja! I like both endings and favor the first one. You excel in writing mystery stories, my friend. 🌹

    1. Thanks so much, so glad you enjoyed it. I love writing mysteries 😊

  17. Love this! Go with it. [didn’t know you liked whiskey.]

    1. Thanks so much. Yeah, I love whiskey these days.

    Scary with interesting twists.

    1. Thanks so much.

  19. OOOOO, Pooja. Scary and intriguing story.

    1. Thank you so much, hope you enjoyed it.

  20. Great story Pooja ✨
If I had to choose I think I like the writer discovering his potential to become a murderer better because I am a sucker for villain origin stories 😂.

    1. Thanks so much 😊

Haha that’s fair, I love villain origin stories too so I understand 😅

  21. Both endings are great but I’m opting for the first one… well twisted there, Pooja👌

    1. Thanks so much, so glad you enjoyed it 😊 The first ending seems most popular haha 😝

      1. my pleasure 🤍
        grand weaving 💫

  22. Tough choice. Both have wonderful last lines but I pick Ending One.

    1. Thanks, that one was my choice too.

  23. I like each ending but prefer the second. Somehow the details of what happens with each person seem more engaging. Great response to the prompt, overall!

    1. Thanks so much, so glad you enjoyed the story. Thanks!

    1. Thank you!

  24. Definitely the first.

    1. Yeah, that one’s my favourite too.

  25. Pooja, great writing, very gritty. Think I like ending #1 better 😎

    1. Thanks so much. Yeah, #1 seems to be the most popular ending.

  26. Nothing like a little method acting to get the juices flowing.

    1. Yup, exactly.

  27. Nice one, thanks.

    1. Thanks so much.

  28. Enjoyed. Great story, Pooja. 🧡

    1. Thank you so much 💓

      1. It’s my pleasure. 🌹

  29. Pooja this was really good!!!!!

    1. Thank you so much!!

      1. You’re welcome!

  30. As the writer stood there in shock after the encounter on the snowy streets, the mysterious woman he attacked miraculously recovered with a theatrical gasp.

“You really know how to make an introduction,” she said, rubbing her neck with a smirk.

In a surprising turn of events, the writer found himself in the midst of a quirky meet-cute rather than a dark crime. The woman, who revealed herself as Bella, confessed she was a fan of murder mysteries and admired his dedication to creating the perfect one. They shared a laugh about the absurdity of the situation, realizing they both had a penchant for the dramatic.

Instead of fear and animosity, a peculiar romance blossomed between the writer and Bella. They spent days together, turning the snowy streets into their own romantic backdrop. Bella, with her charm and wit, became the muse the writer had been searching for all along. Together, they crafted a novel that combined their love for mystery and the unexpected humor that life often brings.

    1. Quite an interesting take on the story 😊

  31. Honestly, it kept me on the edge of my seat and I can’t figure which ending I like more ❤️ Well done, Pooja.

    1. Thanks so much, so glad you enjoyed it 😊

  32. Terrific story telling Pooja, two endings are great but I am with the writer so I like first ending.

    1. Thanks so much, so glad you enjoyed it. The first one was my favourite too.

      1. You are most welcome. you noted that you are a whisky lover, I know some writers need cigarettes while writing. what about your experience with whisky

        1. I wouldn’t say I need it but I enjoy some once in a while. It helps relax me.

          1. Definitely Pooja, it helps relax

  33. Pooja <3 picturing you in lieu of that pic, has me dying of laughter !!! I love both endings … I'm partial to the second b/c psycho thrillers are my jam (lol) !!! Awesome work as always !!!

    1. Haha glad to hear that! So glad you enjoyed the story and same here, I love a good psycho story ahah.

  34. ❤️❤️❤️💕💕👌💕
    The First Ending

    1. So glad you enjoyed it. I prefer the first one too ❤️

  35. I like all of the endings. I was looking for a second part after I read it all. Absolutely amazing work.

    1. Thanks so much, so glad you enjoyed it.

  36. Good suspense story Pooj. I enjoyed both endings but liked the idea of the woman being the murderer this time. There haven’t been that many reported cases of female serial killers in the world. You could actually extend this story with no problem. Great job.

    1. Thank you so much. So glad you enjoyed them both. True, I thought so too when writing that ending- we don’t have a lot of female serial killers but it’s so interesting when there is one.

      1. Yes, it’s true.

  37. wht a story Pooja! I absolutely loved it! It was very twisty and had some awesome alternative endings! X

    1. Thank you so much, so glad you enjoyed it!
