How Blogging Makes Money

a woman in plaid blazer using her laptop | How Blogging Makes Money

I wanted to share another blogging related post. I get a lot of requests for those but it takes a while to write them and doing the research. So, I only post them once in a while. In this post, I decided to talk about how blogging makes money because that’s a topic many bloggers ask me to write about. I know a lot of people blog as a hobby, which is great. But some bloggers wouldn’t mind making an extra income on their blog too. Which I think is fair considering how expensive everything is these days and how a lot of people prefer the perks that come with freelancing.

Today, I wanted to talk about the different methods available for those looking to make an income from blogging. I know a lot of people are interested in doing that but don’t know where to start. I wanted to share some popular and mostly doable options. So, here is how blogging makes money and how you can make a secondary or primary income through blogging:

Sponsored/Paid Posts

Sponsored and paid posts are one of the ways to make money online that I think most people are familiar with. It’s a pretty well known method and I believe this is what many mean when they say they want to make money online. They want to work with clients who will sponsor posts.

Sponsored or paid posts are wonderful methods to make money online since it’s pretty simple. If you are looking to find clients to sponsor your posts check on platforms like Hashtagpaid, Fivver etc. You may also have clients reaching out to you privately so having a contact page of some sort will help. That way clients can reach out easily if they are interested. You may also want to add a page to your site listing the services you offer and letting potential clients know that you are open to working with them. I have a services page and it’s helped a lot.

One of the cons of sponsored or paid posts is that clients are generally not that interested in working with people unless you have good SEO. Most clients prefer sites with at least a certain amount of following and traffic. Even though micro-influencers are a big thing now, you still need a decent amount of engagement to get noticed.

Backlinks

Backlinks are a great way to make money blogging. In my opinion, it’s also the easiest way because SEO companies are always looking for backlinks and pay a decent amount. And all you have to do is link back to what they ask you to.

The issue with backlinks and getting clients for backlinks is that your blog needs to be SEO friendly. Most people looking to add backlinks want blogs with a DA of at least 20 or above. At least, that’s what I’ve noticed. And the higher your DA is, the more you’ll get paid per link. So, before you can start making a decent amount with backlinks you would have to spend some time perfecting your site. Or you can hire me to do it for you… check out my SEO services here.

Ads

Ads are another great way to make an extra income through blogging. There are a lot of different types of ads. Some people may want you to simply mention them/their brand, others may want you to add a banner to your site and some people may send you products to review. I think ads are what a lot of people think about when they think about making an income through their blog. It’s most widely known about and a pretty popular method.

However, like with sponsored or paid posts, you need to have at least a decent following before potential clients approach you for ads. I mean, it’s not impossible for smaller bloggers to get approached. But it’s more likely to happen if you have at least a thousand followers or more. And the amount you get paid per ad would obviously be higher if you have more followers so you would have to work with fewer clients overall if you have a higher following.

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is a popular strategy for generating income online. It’s a win-win situation where you earn a commission each time someone clicks through your site to a partner’s page and completes a purchase. Joining affiliate programs allows you to promote products or services you believe in, turning your website traffic into a revenue stream. You get paid and they get paid. We have an affiliate marketing option for Clickatripafrica and it’s been going pretty well. Both us and the affiliates are happy with the results. Click here if you’re interested in becoming an affiliate with us.

The downside of affiliate marketing is that you would have to put in some time with the marketing aspect of it to get customers to purchase the products. And you would need a certain amount of traffic since you would be marketing the products/services to your readers. However, with proper marketing you can earn quite a decent amount since there’s rarely a limit on how much commission you can earn. I’ve heard of people making hundreds and even thousands of dollars from affiliate marketing.

Conclusion

So, that is how blogging makes money in a nutshell. Of course, there are so many more methods than these ones. But these are currently the most popular and most often the methods I see bloggers using to make an income. I also want to add, if you are someone who wants to make an income blogging I would really recommend doing multiple things at once. What I’ve learnt from freelancing is that you may not make enough every month if you stick to just one stream of income. Having multiple streams of income is the best option and will make you the most money.

And of course, be safe out there. Yes, blogging makes money but there are a lot of scams and frauds out there. There are so many people pretending to be clients only to con you. Scammers are everywhere when it comes to the internet. So, always make sure the people you are working with are legit. And take the payments in advance whenever possible.

Do you make an income through blogging? If so, how do you do that. Let me know in the comments below because I would love to hear from you. Or simply stop by and say hi!

  1. So much information Pooja, thanks for sharing.

    1. Thanks so much, happy to share it.

  2. Thank you so much for this post. I guess affiliate marketing is what YouTubers are doing when they ask you to use their code for a discount on something. I never knew the specific name. You give a lot of great advice. I’m thinking of blogging more again, still in hobby mode, but it’s good to think about these opportunities.

    1. Thank you so much. Yeah, I think these are good things to keep in mind even if you decide to blog as a hobby for now. In case you ever decide to try to generate an income from blogging, these are the best methods for it. Yup, those discount codes are usually affiliate marketing. And it’s pretty successful.

  3. When my gorilla army and I are ready to take over the world, you’re hired! 😄
Great info, Pooja. Excellent post. 👍👍

    1. Thank you so much! Lol, I look forward to working with you and the gorilla overlords 😅

      1. We’re pretty easygoing lol

        1. Actually, one time a gorilla threw something at me when I was a kid lol 😂 And it was outside MY window!

          1. Well, of course, there are exceptions to every rule. I cannot account for the poor behavior of all my brethren, after all. 😋

You seem to have some interesting encounters with wildlife! 😄

            1. I live in Kenya so it’s easy to have encounters with wildlife lol 😂 Not so much anymore, I don’t see gorillas or most animals anywhere because of hunters 😫

              1. I know, but even then I am surprised at the amount you’ve had. lol
                That sucks. 👎

                1. Back in the day there would be wildlife on the roads too and one time there were two leopards in our trees 😀 I’ve had lots of these encounters haha.

                  1. Most of the animals we encounter around here are of the urban variety, but I have had a few bears and raccoons visit my porch in the day lol

                    1. Aw that’s so cool. I love bears and racoons, they’re both so cute.

                    2. They are, but where the bears are concerned, when babies are on my porch, I know momma is not far behind, so I leave them to their business lol

                    3. Oh true, I’ve heard that too. You should never approach a baby bear because the mum is never too far.

                    4. Indeed. Even if you don’t see her, she is likely there.

  4. All good ideas, just have to work hard to make them work for your small business. I don’t make any money blogging, it’s my therapy so I might be making money not paying for the therapy, how much is it? I don’t know any prices but I hear it’s not cheap. Especially if the professional is above average, I used to teach a woman who is a very good therapist. And her services are not for people like me, I mean not for school teachers… But maybe if I hired a great therapist I could have achieved a better position in life, who knows

    1. Thanks so much. I hear therapy is pretty expensive in the US and most people can’t really afford it. Not so much here, I see my therapist monthly most of the time and it costs about $25. I think therapy is always beneficial but it’s not for everyone. Writing is definitely the more affordable option lol.

      1. Sometimes health insurance covers therapy but I guess you have only one or two professionals to choose from

        1. Yeah, you have to go to specific people and they’re not always good at what they do.

          1. I noticed that too

      1. You’re welcome and stay safe.
Two beautiful summer like weather in my neck of the woods in 🇨🇦.

        1. Oh that’s so nice, summer is just around the corner now 😊

          1. Real summer weather but we know March can be a bit tricky ☺.

            1. Yeah, March and April usually has ups and downs.

              1. Oh yes, Make it a great day and stay safe.

  8. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

  9. Great post, Pooja. I’m on the hobby side, but still think it’s fascinating how many ways one can generate income without going out to a traditional job every day… call me old-fashioned, LOL.

    1. Haha yeah, I understand. When I tell people I work online they’re always a bit surprised and ask a lot of questions since freelancing is still relatively new.

  10. Thanks for this post, Pooja. Mine is very new at the moment and not making money out of it…but would have loved to earn some money out of this passion as we should also acknowledge the amount of time and investment…

    1. Thanks so much. Yeah, I think when your blog gets a little older it would be a good idea to pursue some of these methods to make an income. Especially as you have a travel related blog, there’s much more opportunity in that niche.

  11. It is like you read my mind. I was thinking about researching this earlier in the day. (Stay out of my dreams though 🙂)

    Thanks for sharing.

    1. And the mind reading ads have begun 😅

      Thanks so much.

  12. Nicely made so informative, thanks.

    1. Thanks so much, glad you found it informative.

  13. A lot of great information, thank you for sharing!

    1. Thank you, happy to share!

  14. This is so informative. Will be helpful for many

    1. Thanks so much and I hope so.

  15. Excellent advice. I am interested in growing my blog, but it will take some time to fully evaluate my niche and design.

    1. Thanks so much. That’s a good idea, your niche and blogs design are very important. Making sure your site is user friendly is really vital.

      1. So true. Now, where did I put the time to so that? 😂

        1. That’s always the problem, the time is never enough 😅

          1. Preeeeeach! 😂

  16. 💐🎉

  17. I’ve only ever made 35$ while I had word ads on my blog. I think it’s too much stress and takes the joy out of blogging

    1. Yes, I think for some blogging as a hobby is best because that way you can fully concentrate on your writing/content.

      1. Exactly! Why stress and make it into a bad situation

        1. Yeah, you’d rather just enjoy yourself.

          1. Exactly 👍🏼

  18. Thanks for the info, I dabbled in some affiliate marketing, but the company I was using was a bit strange so I may want to try another one sometime .

    1. My pleasure. Yeah, some companies are shady with affiliate marketing and don’t pay proper commissions either. And even in general it’s best to be careful when it comes to making money online. You should definitely give it another try though, just make sure you do a lot of research first so you know they are legit.

      1. Yup and thanks ! I signed up for a few other , but they are definitely harder to get your foot in the door . I think it was Rakaten and one other .

        1. Ah I see, very true it can be a bit more difficult being an affiliate.

  19. Thanks for the post, It helps a lot with questions I have. Especially just starting writing.

    1. Thanks so much and so glad it was helpful.

  20. Great information, Poojah. You should teach a course. Then I should take your course.

    1. Thanks so much, haha yeah a number of people have asked me to start a course but I really don’t have the time these days.

  21. informative to us who don’t know much of how this works.
    thanks for sharing, Pooja 🤍

    1. Thanks so much, so glad it was informative 😊

  22. This stuff can be so overwhelming. Plus I have so much spam on all of my sites today. Thanks for sharing these tips, Pooja. Hope you’re doing well, hon.

    1. Yeah, it’s a lot for sure. Urgh, spam is so annoying, sorry you have to deal with that. I’m well and hope you are too.

  23. Affiliate marketing is still a big mystery to me. Kudos to you and other bloggers who understand how all this stuff works!

    1. Yeah, it’s a bit complicated depending on how the marketing works. Like some people don’t pay properly even per client you send them which I find so shady. For our affiliate program we made sure that affiliates get paid for every single sale they make. Thanks!

      1. Are you referring to ClickatripAfrica and affiliate marketing for your business? Btw I think your business is really cool! 😄

        1. Thank you! Yes, we’re taking affiliates for Clickatrip and we pay per customer which is better than paying only after you’ve made a certain amount.

    1. Thanks so much.

      1. These all are good points
But WP is the biggest hindrance in this

        1. Yes, unfortunately so. WP has become so difficult to work with these days.

  24. Interesting and informative. Thank you for sharing

    1. Thank you so much, so glad you enjoyed the post.

  25. Excellent and informative post, Pooja. I’m sure blogging can be lucrative is one is ready and willing to be involved. Your post is most helpful in being aware of the pros and cons.

    1. Thank you so much. Yes, if one is willing to put in the work you can make a pretty decent amount. Glad it was helpful, I wanted to mention both the pros and cons so people know what they’re getting into. I don’t like when articles only mention the good stuff because that’s unrealistic.

      1. You’re most welcome, Pooja.

  26. I’m definitely a hobby blogger, Pooja, but you have provided a lot of useful information. Just one thing – people new to blogging might not understand your acronyms. 💕

    1. Thanks so much, so glad you found the post informative. I totally understand, a lot of people blog for fun as a hobby and that’s cool too.
Oh good point, I’ll keep that in mind for my next advice post 💕

  27. Interesting! Another great post full of great information. Thank you!

    1. Thanks so much!

  28. Another informative and useful read! Pooja <3 You are a marketing guru, and I would totally hire you !! Secretly, I hope you take over WP then the world … I blog for fun, but I receive lots of spam … ppl think I'm a matchmaker or something. (lol)

    1. Thanks so much! Haha maybe someday 😅 Oof, the spam is so annoying these days!

  29. My Blog costs me about £200 a year.

    1. Yeah, the price of the plans is ridiculous.

  30. That was a lot of interesting information I knew nothing about before reading this. I am not looking to make money off my blog (not at this point) but I am certainly interested in SEO, which I have paid zero attention to and know nothing about.

I started my Leonberger blog to get the word out about my Leonberger book and then it became a fun thing to do so I continued longer than I initally intended to. We have not yet bought a second Leonberger dog because one of our dogs is so hostile to other dogs and we haven’t been able to fix it yet.

However, I am soon going to start a second blog about something totally different and I would like it to get attention even though I am not looking to make money off it. Therefore, this was interesting information even though I am not looking to make money off my blog(s).

    1. Thanks so much. Yeah, SEO is great even if you’re not interested in making an income because it’s a great way to increase traffic to your site. I have some posts on SEO you can check out here: https://lifesfinewhine.ca/?s=SEO

Yeah, I have noticed your blog is more about Bronco’s life and the book. Glad you stayed though, blogging is pretty fun.

    1. Thank you ☺️

  31. Great post as always Pooja having multiple streams of income rather than just sticking to one source will turn out far more effective over a period of time it’s just finding the right clients to work with while trying to avoid internet scammers.

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, very much so. Multiple streams of income is best for people trying to make money online. True, finding the right clients is tough but there are a lot of legit platforms that help with it now.

  32. I wonder how much money I’ve lost blogging over the years if I just calculated the hosting cost, the times I payed for Pro level accounts, and the few times I “tested” Blaze. 😅

Not that it matters, I never intended to make money, but I’m paying more attention to how much money I’ve basically thrown away as I get older. They’re always tiny transactions, in the grand scheme, but they add up!

    1. Urgh yeah, Blaze is pretty much just impressions and not views.

The small transactions are the ones that add up. We think oh it’s just a small transaction but many of those end up becoming big transitions over time.

      1. Yeah, I cancelled a lot of subscriptions last year and ended up saving like $200 a month!

        1. Oh wow, that’s a lot!

  33. Well,thats informative , …..

    1. Thanks so much.

  34. Great post. Valuable information, and thanks for doing the research. All of your posts are so informative. I always learn something new about blogging even though I have been blogging for years now. Thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend.

    1. Thanks so much. I’m so glad my posts are helpful. Have a great weekend too.

      1. I have learned so much from you since I started writing. In the beginning I didn’t know half of what I know now. If I had not read your posts, I would still be trying to figure out everything about blogging. You are an inspiration to all of us.

        1. Thank you. I write those posts to help others so I love hearing that they helped.

          1. You are welcome.

  36. it is indeed difficult to make money blogging, so I don’t even try. for whatever it’s worth, whenever I publish a new post, I add it to my page at Medium.com & make a couple of dollars a month or so. also, I’d always love if you’d guest blog post at my site

    1. Yeah, it takes a lot of extra work to make money and sometimes it’s better to just concentrate on your writing. I’d love to guest post. You can email me at insomniacwithanaccent@gmail.com and we’ll discuss about it more.
