The Good Old Days

The Good Old Days

Momma tended bar

And Pops played guitar

He was gonna make it to Tennessee

And sing at the Grand Ole Opry

I grew up on Cash, Willie, Merle and Dolly

Like them, I longed to be free

I sit on the porch steps singin’

Reminiscin’

About the good old days when times were bad

There wasn’t much we had

But we were happy

Just us three

Now I play guitar for my kid

Just like Pops did

Never did make it to Tennessee

But we’re happy and free

About “The Good Old Days”:

This poem is a response to Kevin’s No Theme Thursday prompts for the week. You guys know I love his prompts since they are image based and I saw this image and knew I had to use it. I’m a really big fan of country music so when I saw this image the words just came to me. And do check out Kevin’s blog to see all the image prompts for the week!

This poem was inspired by multiple of my favourite country songs. Including “The Good Old Days When Times Were Bad” by Dolly Parton. I absolutely adore her and wrote an assignment on this song back when I was studying country music in university. I don’t know if it’s a particularly popular song but I absolutely love it.

What did you think of this prompt image and my poetry response? Are you a fan of country music? Let me know in the comments located below because I would absolutely love to hear from you. Or simply just stop by and say hi!

  14. Nice poem. Dolly Parton has a treasure trove of songwriting gems.

I thought since the guy was wearing a sarape that he might be from Mexico and playing a folk song.

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, absolutely. She’s incredible.

Oh true, he could have had that vibe too. For me, he just seemed very country.

  16. Wonderful poem, PoojaG. I grew up Ina musically gifted family. So this hit right on the sweet spot. Many evenings..and Kate nights were spent just playing guitar and singing. Days at the beach were always a mini concert. My brother’s always seem to have their guitar with them, even to this day. And some of them are grandad’s now. 😜

    1. Thanks so much. That’s so lovely. I’m learning guitar right now but still not so good at it. Haha the music never goes away no matter how old we get 😅

      1. True… I’m sure you’ll get the hang of the guitar. Like everything else, it’s all about consistency. Keep applying yourself. One day you’ll drop some bars for us on WP. 😜👏👏

        1. Haha I really hope so 😅

          1. 😂 you got this. 🙏🙏

    1. Dropped country music ages ago.

I like bhajans/ spiritual and EDM. Two completely different generes.

      EDM because I prefer music

      1. EDM isn’t for me but I know lots of people really enjoy it. For me, it’s more about the lyrics that why I love country.
