About The Author

Alex Diaz-Granados (1963- ) began writing movie reviews as a staff writer and Entertainment Editor for his high school newspaper in the early 1980s and was the Diversions editor for Catalyst, Miami-Dade Community College, South Campus’ student newspaper for one semester. Using his experiences in those publications, Alex has been raving and ranting about the movies online since 2003 at various web sites, including Amazon, Ciao and Epinions.

In addition to writing reviews, Alex has written or co-written three films (“A Simple Ad,” “Clown 345,” and “Ronnie and the Pursuit of the Elusive Bliss”) for actor-director Juan Carlos Hernandez. You can find his reviews and essays on his blog, A Certain Point of View.

Reunion: A Story: A Novella Amazon Summary

It is June 1983. Jim Garraty is a senior at South Miami Senior High. He’s a staff writer for the school paper, a college-bound scholar who plans to become a historian and author of books on military history. He’s well-liked by his peers and teachers, and his future looks bright. But as commencement draws near for the Class of 1983, Jim must deal with unfinished business.

The girl he loves from afar is also graduating, and rumor has it that she is going away for the summer before starting college in the fall. Worse still, Marty doesn’t know how deeply Jim’s feelings for her are – unless he tells her. But when an opportunity arises on the last day of classes at South Miami High, Jim hesitates…and the window of opportunity closes.

Now, 15 years later, James Garraty is an up-and-coming history professor whose literary career is on the rise. Respected by his fellow faculty members, liked by his students, and recipient of popular and critical acclaim, Jim has it all. Except for one thing. True love.

My Review Of Reunion: A Story: A Novella

I decided to focus my review on specific areas of the book and then a short overall review. I feel like that’s easier for me to write and easier for the readers to properly follow. I’ll keep the review as spoiler-free as I can but be warned that there may be a couple of spoilers ahead.

Plot

The plot was what drew me to the story. Now, I have talked about this book before and have mentioned this, but I feel like I should once more for those that haven’t read that post. I’m not usually drawn to romance novels or anything particular romantic. I much rather prefer psycho-thrillers, murder mysteries etc. But the summary for this book really drew me in because it’s something most of us can relate to- lost love. We all have “the one that got away.” Well, most of us anyway. Also, as a historian I loved that Garraty’s character was a historian and was intrigued by that.

James Garraty has everything but true love and that’s something a lot of adults struggle with. As the plot continues, we see his storyline as well as the plot itself evolve. We see the way the characters were as teenagers and how they have grown since then.

The author also explores multiple philosophical aspects of life such as true love, happiness, friendships, loss and regret. Things most adults are familiar with. I don’t want to say what the ending is or giveaway too much, but we see Garraty slowly accepting loss and learning to live with it. We also learn the importance of confessing our feelings when we have the chance because life is so incredibly unpredictable.

Characters

I really enjoyed the characters. They were very three dimensional, if that makes sense. They were relatable, emotion evoking, thoughtful and like I mentioned, I loved that the characters grew and evolved. I don’t enjoy stubborn characters and find it boring when they remain stagnant. *cough Catcher In The Rye cough*

But these characters were far from stagnant. They were also very interesting to follow, especially the character of James Garraty. You see his internal struggle with different aspects of his life, especially with love and loss.

Overall

Overall, I very much enjoyed this book and would recommend it to everyone.

  16. (Blushes). Wow. What can I say? As the author of “Reunion: A Story,” I can’t thank you enough for your “leap of faith” in buying a book (no matter how brief it might be) with elements of a genre you don’t normally gravitate to. I’m not into romance stories, either, but I am into stories that have universal themes…themes that you address so well in your excellent and informative review.

    Thanks, Pooja!

    1. It was my pleasure, I genuinely enjoyed the book. I think I was under the impression that it would be a love story but realised it was a story about love which made it even better.

      1. The second book in the duology is (at least from my perspective) about the redemptive power of love, as well as second chances. And…it delves more into Jim’s backstory with Marty.

        1. I see, that sounds very interesting. I look forward to reading it when it’s published.

  17. A detailed review without giving away too much. Sounds like a well-developed story. Well done, Pooja and best wishes to the author.

    1. Thanks so much, it was really well written.

  18. Nice review.
