What’s Up With Pooj?

Honestly, not much and I am so thankful for that. Recently, my life has just been too much and I sort of needed a break from everything (including myself lol). So on Sunday, I took some time to chat with a very good friend I had made in uni when I was studying in Canada. We had taken a course together and have been great friends since even though we never took another course together again. Simply because we studied different things, I swear lol. Anyway, she’s a bit of a writer too and an avid reader so we had much to talk about. It’s always nice catching up with someone after such a long time.

Also, today a teacher I had in high school stopped by the house (apparently we’re related?). I can’t believe she remembers me because it’s been almost two decades and I’m sure she had many students since then. She got her doctorate and works at a local uni now. She seems much more happy and laid back which is cool. Hopefully, we can stay in touch since she’s in the process of publishing her poetry collection and is also interested in history- my one true love (yes I love history more than writing, what can I do it’s my passion but makes no money lol).

    My week was…okay-ish. I’m still readjusting to life in Miami after an eight-year absence (and a 10-month exile in New Hampshire!), and I’ve come to terms with the reality that my novel won’t be finished in time for Christmas. (Too many days lost to packing, stress, and the long road trip.) I still write scenes when I can, do writing exercises daily (even my blog counts as a writing exercise, right?), and I try to relax and enjoy whatever pastimes I can in my new home in South Florida.

      Yeah, I think it takes a while adjusting to a new place. I thought my novel would be done by the end of the year too but it always takes longer than we expected. Blogging definitely counts as a writing exercise. Enjoy setting into your new home.

    I’m in full swing with Christmas preparations. There is a ton to do in a short time, but it is all fun, and I’m happy to see all the friends and family at so many get-togethers.

      Yes, I think it’s worth it in the end. I love Christmas time. It’s pretty big in Kenya too, all the malls are decorated and stuff.

    I love the quote, I go to work because kids make me smile, they also make me cry sometimes but it’s not the point. The point is to live without regrets, having said that I admit I have a few regrets, maybe one or two.
    Last week was lots of fun, travel, food and nature. I suddenly realized that I actually LIVE in the states. Only ten years later … Before I was hoping it’s a short term solution, just a temporary arrangement, a transition of sorts. Now I have to act like an American, eat, walk, talk, like I’m from here… Haha such a random thought

      Sometimes what we love makes us smile and cry too. That’s the hard part about caring. Yes, I think there’s no point regretting the past- it’s already done and we can’t change it.

    That’s amazing about your teacher. I remember when I accidentally ran into my 4th grade teacher at an airport. She recognized me right away despite the 2-3 decades that passed since 4th grade. It’s amazing how someone who seemed like such an authority now was just a friendly little woman.

    I like the sentiment of the quote. If you murdered someone it is highly likely that you would get caught so ultimately that would not make you smile. One exception might be if the murder prevented millions of people from perishing from an event like WW3 or something like that. The popular advice in self help books and on the talk show scene in the 90s was to follow your passion and the money will follow.

      That’s true, I guess eventually the smile would go away. Or going back in time and stopping WWI so that there’s no WWII either. I often think about that a lot. I don’t know about that advice, these days following my passion is leaving me broke lol.

    I’m glad you qualified the quotation by negating murder. I’m not sure Twain would have been so civil. I’m also glad you had good conversations this week (so far). As for your love of history, well, I share it. Do you have a favorite part of the human experience to cover? I prefer the ancient times–medieval going back, that is. Maybe someday you will write a history.

      Haha I don’t think he would have either, having read his other writing. History is fascinating to me in general but I tend to be more interested in modern history (1900 to present). Although I did take a course on medieval history are very much enjoyed it.

    I regret doing a lot of things that made me smile… but I don’t regret smiling about it. I was a problem teenager.
    I have recently been playing Holy Diver by Dio… a lot. think I’m in one of those moods. No fun plans this week. But I do have some writing submissions to complete, so that’s always fun for me.

    I’m kind of listening to a bit of everything this week. I really liked your song choice! Linda Perry’s voice is perfect for this rocker-ballad.

    The quote is great, also. It’s a reminder to savour the things that make us smile. Years ago, someone suggested keeping a “blue Monday file” – of inspiring or thoughtful letters, cards, etc. from people. More recently a therapist friend referred to it as a “sunshine folder” – I like the more positive title. I have a paper and a digital sunshine folder with lots of entries from over the decades.
