Want To Grow Your Blog? Then Log Out And Take A Nap...

Today, we will be talking about a lesser known and perhaps a somewhat unorthodox method to grow your blog. This is one that I have seen being discussed quite often especially more recently. And it is one that I do somewhat believe in because I have had certain experiences myself. It is a method that can help you grow your blog and the crazy part is the one thing you need to do is nothing.

Now, I know some of you don’t particularly care about growing your blog. You are here blogging as a hobby or perhaps to improve your writing skills or even to just socialise with some new people. And that’s totally okay. There’s nothing wrong with that.

This post however, is for those of you who do want to grow your blog and hope to increase both traffic and following. So, without any more yapping from me let’s get into the actual method itself and realistically how likely it is that this method does anything really.

What Is This Method?

The method is simple, basically it’s that you share your posts and then log out completely or just don’t be active on the platform. I know that sounds a little odd and perhaps a little crazy so let me explain.

It started from the theory that every platforms algorithm is designed to make users spend as much time on the platform as possible. Platforms no longer want users, they want active users. However, most users aren’t going to be active on the platform if their content isn’t getting any engagement. Therefore, if you post and then logout or stop using the platform for a while the algorithm will push your content more so that you receive engagement on your post and are more likely to be active on the platform.

I hope I explained that well. As a writer, it’s the biggest irony in my life that I am not very good at communicating or even writing down my own thoughts.

Anyway, that is pretty much the method. It focuses on manipulating the algorithm to help get more traffic and engagement to your site. You don’t have to be logged out or inactive all day, only for the first hour.

But Does It Actually Work?

Yes, I think it does. You may be surprised by my answer but I’ve tried and tested this method (accidentally though) and it actually seems to work.

Some days, I publish my post and don’t check in till I wake up. And some days I check in a few minutes after posting. To my surprise, I always get more comments and likes when I’m not online after posting. I don’t know if it’s simply a coincidence because it’s happened so many times and with so many different posts on different topics as well as the same topics.

Final Thoughts

So yes, I do think this method works. However, I don’t think it’s effective on its own. You still need to be putting out content that is of good quality and encourages engagement. The algorithm can only do so much, if your post isn’t interesting to read or is filled with spelling errors/typos or is just not something people are interested in then people aren’t going to engage no matter what.

The opposite of this method is also effective where you are extremely active for the first hour after you post something. So keep that in mind too.

But at the end of the day, I do think platforms manipulate their algorithm to try to get users to be as active as possible. I mean, why wouldn’t they. However, these days WordPress seems to be taking a different direction where they scare away active users by making the platform less and less user friendly. Sorry, I had to throw some shade at WP. It’s been wonky again recently and it’s annoying me lol.

What are your thoughts on this method? Do you believe it works? Let me know in the comments below because I would love to hear from you. Or simply stop by and say hi!

  1. Sort of doing this. Will monetise backintheunderdarkbooha.blog soon… or a similar domain name

    1. Good luck, hope it all goes smoothly.

  2. I want to communicate with readers and other bloggers. What I enjoy most is the feedback and then reading what they write. I learn from all of you.

    1. That’s wonderful, I think we learn so much from you as well.

  3. It seems like you would get way behind on replying to followers’ comments if you just walk away. I make and reply to, a lot of comments daily.

    1. Yeah, that could be a potential issue but you only have to be away from the platform for 30-60 mins so for those posting less often it’s not too bad.

      1. I never log out of WP. My site isn’t very pops either.

        1. Oh okay, well honestly it’s all about personal preference. If you enjoy your time on WP just keep doing your thing and having fun 😊

          1. Yes indeed! I’ve had one view on a post today, very odd.

            1. I don’t know what’s up with WP today, it’s very inactive even for me.

              1. You Too!! It’s almost dead! What the heck, Pooja?

                1. I have no idea what’s going on but there’s seriously so little engagement on here these days.

                  1. Right, it’s barely better today here, Pooja. WP needs to do much better!

                    1. It does, they need to listen to their users!

                    2. Yes they do, not doing so speaks poorly about the people who run this platform.

                    3. Speaking of poorly run platforms, there’s an app that’s exactly like IG but better called Pixelfed. You should check it out, I plan to eventually leave IG and join it too.

                    4. Thank you! Someone finally did it?!

                    5. Yup looks like it!

  4. First of all, it should go without saying that our results will vary. That being said, yes, I do agree that this could benefit our sites. Case in point, in the past few months I’ve received some notifications about a boost in engagement, and it usually happens when I don’t post for a few days. So, I’d say that everyone should try this strategy out, because it could surprisingly make your content more visible.

    1. Yes, I think that results definitely vary but this method could be beneficial for some.

  5. Great post, Pooja! Seems counterintuitive, but when you consider the algorithms and the platform’s goals, I can see how it makes sense.

Now that you’ve spilled the beans, expect a buncha “glitches” on your WP account. If that happens, I’d demand a free blaze campaign 😖😂

    1. Thank you! Yes, I think the main thing is that platforms will do whatever it takes to keep their users online and active.

Lol those campaigns don’t work this time I want some cold, hard cash 😅

  6. I like the idea of once a day…catching up, and writing that blog. trying to keep up with every blog as soon as it’s posted fills and entire day. I keep thinking, about just being on line at specific times, for shorter periods of time….and doing rather than writing

    1. Yes, I think having boundaries with how often you’re online helps.

  7. Wow that’s fascinating Pooja and I loved how you described why it works:) I can believe that too:)

    1. Thanks so much, it’s crazy but it works for many!

  8. That’s an interesting observation

    1. Thanks, people have been talking about this method a lot recently and I thought I would share my thoughts on it too.

  9. Very interesting, but it makes a lot of sense!

    1. Thanks! Yeah, it’s a little unorthodox but I think it works.

      1. I logged out right after I read it and commented. We’ll see! 😉

        1. Let me know if you see more enxegegment!

          1. I couldn’t see any difference, really, but then I don’t have anywhere near the traffic you get.

The one thing I noticed yesterday is my WP dashboard has gone 80s with the old style interface. It’s one that was always an option (no thanks) but now it’s all there is… doesn’t seem to be any way to change back to the 21st century. So un-intuitive… Grrrrr!

            1. Try it on a Tuesday or Wednesday- those tend to be more active on WP.

I noticed that, how odd. I don’t know why they change things that are fine and refuse to change things that need to be improved.

              1. Okay, I’ll try it then just for the fun of it.

Yeah, it’s totally annoying. Looks terrible, everything has moved, and it’s way more complicated to grab a shareable link from a previous post, for example! It’s the same interface I saw when I first signed onto a different site almost a decade ago. Talk about stepping back in time! 🙄

                1. Yeah, this is their original design which I don’t understand at all why they brought it back. People were fine with how things looked, they want actual changes.

                  1. I was on a chat where I showed the happiness engineer two glitches in the “update” and told them how bad it was overall, and that others had noticed and questioned the changes. They said they’d shared my feedback with “the team” and I could check back in a week to see what they might do. So frustrating! I almost wrote a post about it! 😅

                    1. That’s all they say, they never actually listen to us. So frustrating!

                    2. Early on when they made a silly change that affected the embedding of outside links, I pointed out how many extra clicks the “new” method required, and they actually changed it back!

I am trying not to be too optimistic based on the number of weird changes they’ve pushed out, but here’s hoping…

                    3. Hmm well fingers crossed they listen, I’ve had an experience where they took what I said into account too. So you never know 🤔

                    4. Yes, here’s hoping… 🤗

                    5. 🤗🤞🏽

  10. 🙏🌹

    Aum Shanti

  11. Hmm. . . Interesting, but if this were the magic bullet, I’d be Miss Popularity by now. Granted I’m a hobbyist, so who am I to say?

    1. Haha there’s still time for you to become Ms. Popularity.

  13. I always post my stuff for when I first get up because I want to be able to immediately comment with people. I’ve often wondered about trying to find an optimum time to schedule my stuff, but since I’m a hobby blogger first, I really don’t want to start down that road. I’m afraid I’d end up turning it into a second job instead of a stress reliever 😀
It definitely seems counter-intuitive, but then, a LOT of the “algorithms” I hear about seem that way.
Glad you found this works for you and I hope others can make use of that info…

    1. Yeah, honestly if you’re just blogging as a hobby do what you enjoy without being too worried about the stats etc.
Algorithms are certainly complicated and I have seen that the priority for most platforms is to get as many active users as possible which is what makes me believe in this method.
I usually am not online when I first publish the post because it’s really late my time so it’s kind of coincidental but seems to work because when I do happen to check comments right after publishing I always get less engagement. Could be a coincidence though.

  14. When I first started my blog was growing daily. Lots of new people following. In covid it reached a high. Then Blaze came in and my traffic dropped to under a third.

    1. Yes, I remember those good old days. We had so much engagement back then.

  15. This is interesting!
    I’ll gonna try this.

    Thank you, Pooja!

    1. Thanks and good luck!

  16. If I wasn’t so happy to blog every day, I’d try this method. 😂

    1. Your blog posts get a good amount of engagement anyway so I think you’re good either way 😅

      1. Thanks Pooja. I check my stats once in a while but I really am not much bothered about them.

        1. Yeah, I think if you’re blogging as a hobby you shouldn’t worry too much about the stats.

          1. Exactly 👍🏼

  17. This is an interesting and unique method to try to grow a blog. No harm in trying. 😀

    1. Thanks and yeah I think give it a try and see what works for you.

  18. but i m sooooooooooooooooooooooooo addicted
    and hands on too. eh?

    1. Well I’ve always thought so lol

      1. the book showed up. how nice

        1. Yay, hope you enjoy it.

          1. one peom at a time. thanks for making it.

            1. It was fun to write even though the poems are a bit depressing lol.

              1. life is happy and sad

                1. Yes, it’s never just one.

                  1. they re intertwined.

          2. not again! call shreya and preya more wordpress “improvements” yeah right!

  19. How interesting, Pooja, and this makes sense. Thank you for sharing.

    1. Happy to share it, this is a method that’s often discussed when it comes to social media but not as much with blogging so I wanted to share my thoughts on it.

      1. I am glad you did, Pooja. 😊

  20. Yes, I’ve noticed this approach with other social media sites. Like if I don’t post stories or anything for at least a few days I end up getting more notifications. Very strange, but it works I guess.

    1. Yes and sometimes you end up getting more followers too. It’s odd but also makes sense since they want to give you some positive reinforcement to get you back to being active.

  21. I think it works especially if you have good content, also tags so that your posts are searchable. And a good amount of followers already. I mean that’s like a few years of dedicated work starting to pay off… it depends on the season as well, blogging has high and low seasons apparently.

    1. Yes, I think the quality of the content is key. If you have high quality content it’s more likely to work. True, WordPress is more active in the first six months of the year. And the last month.

      1. I also think it depends on certain human factors that WP may or may not be aware of

        1. Yes, that could definitely factor in.

  22. Quite interesting to read about this approach. Thank you for sharing, Pooja 💫

    1. Thank you and happy to share it ✨

      1. It’s my pleasure 💫

  23. Yes, I agree, Pooja, it works…but again as you said, quality content is king.

    1. Absolutely, I think quality is really key regardless of which method you use to grow.

  24. As a side note, I hope you know we all really appreciate you trying to help others grow their platforms. I know personally, you’ve helped me a ton! ❤️

    1. Aw, thanks for saying that- I’m more than happy to help all the wonderful people on here! ❤️

  25. Intresting… 💡

    1. Thanks ☺️

  26. How interesting.

  27. I haven’t thought a lot about how the algorithm tries to “encourage” participation. Fascinating post and I think you explained it well! Thanks, Pooja!

    1. Thanks so much! Yeah, I think it’s a relatively new strategy but it also made sense to me since they would want more active users.

  28. Huh… I think I have to.agree on this. Many times I post and move on with my day as im.always running late, and the interactions on the post are much better when I check on them.after work.

    1. It’s the same for me which is what leads me to believe that this method is real.

A & J PEI Treasures/E Jean Simpson, BEd, BA, MA

    Interesting.

  30. I’ve noticed something similar on my own blog, where posts do better when I’m not constantly checking them.

    1. Yeah, I think it definitely happens for many of us.

  31. That’s clever 😄

    1. Thank you ☺️

  32. Intriguing, Pooja! I had migrated to scheduling my weekly posts 2-3 hours before I wake up since I had found that I got more interaction on them….I thought it was because of the time difference between me and my readers, I didn’t even think about the algorithm malarkey! Thanks for the insight!

    1. Same here, my post is published when it’s 4am for me so I don’t go in for a few hours usually and it helps so much with engagement. More than the time difference, it’s the algorithm.

  33. “Therefore, if you post and then logout or stop using the platform for a while the algorithm will push your content more so that you receive engagement on your post and are more likely to be active on the platform.” Ok this is bizarre. I never log out.. are you saying. Therein lies the problem? lord.

    1. As long as you’re not active for the first hours or so you’re fine even if logged in 😊

      1. interesting and I always try to engage right away..,.. hmmmm

        1. Sometimes that helps too so you never know.

  34. It’s a good method Pooja, thanks for that

    1. Thanks so much.

  35. This is very interesting. I’ll try it on my next post 😂

    1. Try it on Tuesday in particular, it may work 🤗

      1. Okayy thank you!

        1. You’re very welcome, hope it works for you!

  36. As WordPress decrease and complicate functionality, people leave the platform. I hear Substack is gaining traction.

    1. Yes, a lot of people have left for Substack and other similar platforms like Vocal. It’s bound to happen when users needs are not taken into account.
