Blogging Mistakes And Why We Need To Avoid Them

Over the years, there have been so many changes on WordPress. The design, the features and pretty much everything else except the things that actually need changing. And that can make it harder to use this platform than ever before. I see a lot of bloggers, especially newer ones, that make blogging mistakes that could easily be avoided.

These are small, seemingly insignificant mistakes. However, they can have a big impact on your stats. It can be what stops someone from following you or interacting with your posts. And some of these mistakes are simply because it’s become so much more difficult to use WordPress recently.

So, I thought I would make an updated post about blogging mistakes you should try and avoid. Here are the blogging mistakes and why you should as well as how you can avoid them:

No About Me Or Contact Page

This is one of the most common blogging mistakes that bloggers make and it is one that costs a lot of people followers and backlinks. Although blogging may not be as popular as it once was, this platform is still filled with talented bloggers that are still active. Why should someone follow you, what makes you stand out, what makes your blog special? That’s what a lot of people want to know before they commit to following your blog.

Having an About Me page or any sort of introductory page will help potential followers figure out what your niche is, what topics/topic they can expect to find on your blog, what your interests are, what your writing style is and so much more. A lot of people will only follow blogs that they are certain they will like and an About page will help them figure out if your blog is for them.

There should also be a clear way for bloggers to contact you because the blogging community is a very social one and sometimes people want to chat and get to know you before they follow your blog. If they find you to be friendly, kind and genuine they’re much more likely to follow your blog. Having a clear contact page or your contact information written clearly on your About Me page helps a lot.

And just to be clear, you can’t just post an About Me post and call it a day. It needs to be on the homepage of your blog where people can easily locate it.

You Should NOT Be Making These Blogging Mistakes In 2025

Spamming

This should be a no regardless of what platform you choose to use. Spamming is not only incredibly annoying but it will also very likely stop bloggers from following your or even visiting your site.

There are multiple types of spamming. The first kind is leaving comments asking bloggers to follow your or view your posts without mentioning their blog post or anything else. This is such a tacky tactic. The next is liking a million of their posts in like a minute. No one wants that and you are just taking up space on their notifications tab and making them miss actual notifications. Again, tacky and annoying.

If you want to interact with other bloggers, make sure you leave genuine comments and instead of spam liking a bunch of their posts like one or two that you actually enjoyed. Keeping it real will get you everywhere on this platform and spamming is a great way to get yourself kicked off.

Not Using Your Features

This one annoys me so much because WordPress has so many great features and yet they make them harder and harder to use. It makes no sense to me to make features less user-friendly or to make so many features paid features when they should be free. But what can you do, WordPress is as it is.

Thankfully, some features are still completely free and can do wonders for your blog if used correctly. Firstly, tags and categories. You should only be using a combination of 15 tags and categories. I always recommend using even fewer than that. I would recommend 1-2 categories max and 10-12 tags max. If you use more than 15, WordPress automatically marks your post as spam and will keep it off the Reader, tag pages, the Search page and the Discover page. This will drastically drop your traffic and people will find it very hard to find your blog organically.

The next features are images and gifs. Not only are they great to keep the readers attention, they’re also great for SEO. WP offers so many free images and gifs, use them!

SEO

SEO is a must if you want to get traffic outside of this platform AKA Search Engine traffic. If that’s not one of your goals with blogging then feel free to ignore this one. I know a lot of people blog as a hobby and don’t care too much about increasing their Search Engine traffic.

However, if you would like to increase Search Engine traffic please do your SEO research in advance because it’s so much work going back and editing older posts to make them SEO friendly. Seriously, it takes forever and is a lot of work. You don’t want to end up having to spend hours every day for months just to fix problems that could have been fixed months or years ago.

One of the biggest blogging mistakes people make is ignore SEO till it’s too late.

Taking Breaks Without Announcing Them

I’ve noticed a lot of bloggers do this and I do understand that maybe people are going through something and can’t post for a while. But if you are able to announce that you’ll be taking a break and share when you’ll be posting again, that would really make a difference.

When you dip unannounced, it makes your regular readers think you have abandoned your blog permanently (which happens a lot here). This will lead to you losing followers and people no longer remembering to check on your blog when you do decide to come back and share posts again. It just disrupts the whole cycle.

Check For Errors

Please always be regularly checking for errors when it comes to your blog because WordPress has become a very glitchy platform. There are people that like my posts or even comment on them but I’m unable to view their blog because their link doesn’t lead me to their site or shows an error message. Please make sure your username leads to your blog.

Also, some sites use retired themes which makes them harder to use and navigate. Sometimes the comments function doesn’t work or the like button etc. Please make sure everything is updated and working well because you can lose out on a lot of traffic and followers simply because your site is not user-friendly.

Conclusion

Those are some blogging mistakes I see very commonly and think bloggers should work on if they would like to grow their presence both on this platform and on Search Engines. 1. Great post, good luck dear

    1. Thanks so much.

  2. So many great suggestions, Pooja. The one about making sure it their name links to their blog is such a good one! I love the way you support the community with such good and actionable tips!

    1. Thank you so much! Yeah, I see so many bloggers who don’t have their site correctly linked and it can be both frustrating as well as bad for their own traffic.

  3. Thank you this helps a lot. 💗

    1. Glad it’s helpful 😊

  4. Great post, Pooja! I have over 8000 posts, so editing them would not work. You are very correct in stating that WP has changed many things but not the things that need changing. It’s ridiculous. The block editor seems ridiculous and I’ve never had to use it thanks to a plugin. Also, I have refused to follow blogs that lack a proper About Me page, or an About page that has not been altered. SEO isn’t important to me as this is one of three hobbies I have.

    1. Thank you! I only have a little over 2000 and editing still takes up so much time. I can’t imagine editing over 8000.
The Block Editor is one of the worst things WordPress has done to this platform. It’s so difficult to use and now they don’t even give bloggers a choice unless they upgrade to a plan with plugins and use the Classic Editor plugin. So ridiculous.
That makes sense, I think when blogging as a hobby SEO is really not too important.

      1. WP never asked its users if they wanted a new editor. Bullies.

        1. And they do that every single time, it’s so frustrating.

  5. Hi Pooja, all good points, I could only think of one. thing important for bloggers and that is knowing your audience. It sounds easier than it actually is. It’s true about any kind of writing or product we are trying to sell, knowing who is going to read / consume it is crucial. I wish I knew my audience better. Good luck!

    1. Thanks so much. That’s so true. Knowing your audience really helps. One way to figure it out is to look at what tags you use most often and visit the pages for those tags. That’s usually your audience.

      1. Oh, cool I didn’t know that

        1. Yeah, just click the tag on your Reader and you’ll find blogs with the same topic.

  6. Great post, thanks for info

    1. Thanks so much.

  7. I’ve taken your advice on the categories and tags, at least 99% of the time lately. I feel lighter since doing so, because I’d always thought the opposite, that the more tags and categories the better. I still know very little about SEO, and need to make sure my email is listed somewhere.

    Great advice as always.

    1. That’s so true and a mistake most of us make, I used to think using more tags would get my post to more people too. And WP doesn’t do a good job explaining that there’s a 15 tag + category limit. It wasn’t until a few months in I realised I was using too many tags.

      Thanks so much.

      1. I’d never looked into it, so would never have known unless I was making a site for someone else. I did do that once, but it was quite basic

  8. Thanks Pooja! I must confess I’ve been gone for long periods without saying anything 🫣.

    1. Happy to share! We all make these blogging mistakes but I would always recommend letting people know if you take a break especially if it’s longer than a month.

      1. Ok, wil do! Thanks again!l

        1. My pleasure!

  9. This is very good advice. Thank you Pooja.

    1. Thank you so much.

    1. Oops… like don’t do this is a post 😂😂😂😂

This is the worst as I can’t access even friends right now. It’s so add!

“There are people that like my posts or even comment on them but I’m unable to view their blog because their link doesn’t lead me to their site or shows an error message. Please make sure your username leads to your blog.

And now everything looks like it has changed. So frustrating! 💓🤷‍♀️

      1. Not the literal example 😅🤭

It’s become so frustrating, I totally agree! 😩

        1. I actually want to know how I can access the sites/blogs I’m following.
Can’t find them anywhere into the WordPress Reader!

            1. 👍🏼

        2. I get it and yes, now I don’t know what’s going on AGAIN … lucky you 🍀Hahahahahahaha 💚

  10. I heard I could make some pretty good friends around here if I become the spammiest of spammers. That will take me places in life right there! Oh, and by the way, do you mind giving my blog a follow? Lol! 😂

In all seriousness though, The advice on this post is top notch! When it comes to my About page, I’ve got something there that seems ok, but after reading your advice, It made me think that I need to put some more love and attention to it. I really appreciate how much you love helping the community here grow their platforms. We should be continually grateful for your presence here. 😀😁

    1. Lollll you were this close to being blocked 👌🏽🤭

Thanks so much! Yeah, updating your About page every year or so is a good idea. It helps a lot with growing your blog and letting your readers know what your blog is currently about 😊

      1. And thus the story of me trying to become the spammiest of all spammers has now come to an abrupt end. As he we close, but not close enough Lol! 😂

Awesome! I need to jot that down and keep it in mind. And, absolutely! You’re freaking welcome! 😀😊

        1. 😅😅 Thank you! ☺️

    2. About page gives the idea — who the blogger is? What they are publishing, and their goals?

Without about page it would be hard to decode them.

Bloggers often change the topics & the themes of their blogging style.

      1. I totally agree! You’re so right! Which is why I need to personally put way more care into it than I’ve initially done so far. 😁

  11. You always the best blogging advice!

    1. Thank you, hope it’s helpful!

  12. Super post, Pooja, thank you! One question if you don’t mind – do you mean 10-12 tags max per post, or that you should only ever have 10-12 as a total of all the tags you ever use on your site?

I really like your advice about an About and a Contact page. I’ve been frustrated when wanting to reach out to bloggers I follow when they don’t have those, especially a contact page.

There are a few people who spam my site like you described. It’s so annoying to see someone liked 20 posts in an hour, like you say, filling up notifications, and me knowing there’s no way they could have read much more than a quarter of those posts and listened to the songs I’ve shared in that time. And the guy that kept telling me I should come visit his site, rarely if ever commenting on my posts? Bu-Bye!

You’re a real asset to the community, Pooja, with all the advice you share on top of the variety of your content. Thanks again and I hope you are having a good week!

    1. Thank you so much! Altogether, you should be using a maximum of 15 categories and tags combined per post not overall. It’s okay and actually recommended to use different tags in every post to get to new audiences. So even if most of the tags may remain the same if your posts have similar topics, try to use one or two new tags per post.

Yeah, a lot of bloggers don’t have clear About and Contact pages. The spamming is really frustrating because they mess up your notifications and obviously it’s clear they didn’t read your posts just liked them.

Thank you and hope you’re having a good week too!

      1. Thanks very much, I appreciate that! I generally use about 7-10, and try to add new ones once in a while.

The week is going well, thanks, just getting used to the ridiculous twice-a-year time change! 😅

        1. That’s good, sounds like you’re using tags correctly.

Oh right haha, that’s the one thing I don’t miss. DST is so annoying sometimes 😅

          1. Thanks very much for confirming that!

Yes… annoying and totally unnecessary! 😅

  13. Great tips. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thanks so much.

  14. Great advice, Pooja! I’m glad you mentioned the thing about tags, because WP doesn’t exactly come out and tell you about it. I mean, you can find it (I did), but it’s not an up-front thing. Initially, you naturally assume the more tags, the better. This was a mistake I made early on, before I became aware of the random limit.

The point about SEO is good, too. I used to write a blog for an employer, and no one told me about this, I had to figure it out myself. Once I did, I made SEO my mission.

Now, since I’m not marketing a product, I’m willing to sacrifice audience numbers for the integrity of my writing. The important thing is that people know there’s a difference and they have a choice.

    1. Thanks so much! Yes, WP makes it difficult for new bloggers to figure stuff out unless you manually search for it so I thought I would let people know that there’s a limit to tags and categories. I see people using like 20-30 per post sometimes and that can be damaging.

Yeah, when you’re trying to get more traffic to the site SEO is really important. If you’re blogging as a hobby that’s definitely not as important anymore. I think that’s the main thing, that people know about SEO and make a choice whether to use it or not.

  15. 🙏🌹

    Aum Shanti

  16. Great post, good advice. Many thanks 🙏

    1. Thanks so much 🙏

  17. […] You Should NOT Be Making These Blogging Mistakes In 2025 Have a look and see what you are doing wrong. Some great advice here. […]

  18. Man, I was fist pumping through that whole section on the About page. I can’t count the number of times I come across a new (to me) blogger and try to find a post/page that sums them up. Either they don’t have one or it’s hidden under some menu or it’s just a random post they did 5 years ago and now is impossible to find. The one thing I have found is that WP has made it impossible to easily find such a page on the jetpack app. You go to someone’s site on the app and all you can see is the posts. Nothing like visiting their website. So I try to visit a blogger on my pc to avoid that. But if that is all someone uses, well, they’ll never find all the stuff I setup on my home page, which is really sad.

As for WP actively destroying things. Have you seen that new users can no longer use the classic editor? That option just isn’t available to them, period. Old users can still finagle things to find it, but it is definitely being actively phased out and the goal is to completely replace it with the block editor. Which has already led to a lot of casual bloggers I know quitting, because they want a wysiwyg editor, just like a word processor. Myself, I’ve let my wp.com plan lapse and am back on the wp url. I refuse to pay wp.com anything any more for a casual blog.

    1. Yeah, I definitely get your frustrations because so many blogs have no About or Contact page and have multi-niche sites so you don’t know what they offer. Which I think stops so many people from following.

I don’t use the app so didn’t know about that but that’s a shame. We work so hard to set up our homepage.

Urgh yes they have actively been pushing the Block Editor even though the majority of people hated it for years now. Absolutely, so many people left because of it and that’s when the mass blog abandoning began imo. I so understand, it’s not worth paying for a plan when you’re blogging as a hobby. They offer barely anything good these days unless you’re on the Business Plan.

  19. So true, these are all great! 😊 The one I think I’m most guilty of is taking a break unannounced. Sometimes life just happens and writing falls by the wayside, but I’m trying to be better about it, I think. It meant so much to me as well when people reached out to me after I didn’t write for a bit, I did feel bad for worrying them, though. Also “There are people that like my posts or even comment on them but I’m unable to view their blog because their link doesn’t lead me to their site or shows an error message. Please make sure your username leads to your blog.”

👆 this happens to me all the time! I feel so bad when someone subscribes to me and I can’t find their blog. Like looking for a needle in a haystack. I could see people giving up on blogging super quick too, maybe they don’t know, but it’s very frustrating!

    1. Thank you so much! That definitely happens, sometimes it’s difficult to announce when we’re taking breaks but I think as long as the break isn’t too long it’s okay. However, if you’re gone for a month or longer I would definitely recommend announcing it. Yeah, WP is like a family and we do get worried when someone disappears because some people do that and never come back.
Same, I want to visit their site and follow back sometimes but their link just doesn’t work. I sometimes try to search their name on Reader but that doesn’t always work 😔

  20. Interesting and useful post!
    Thanks a lot for sharing

    1. Thank you so much!

      1. You’re more than welcome 🌹

  21. Excellent points, Pooja. I won’t follow a blog without an About Me page, and I tend not to follow blogs without categories or tags. Though I use the block editor, I feel it shies new bloggers away. The classic editor should easily be available for all to use.

    1. Thank you so much. Same here, the About page is a big deal for most of us because we don’t want to follow a blog we don’t know about. True, the Block Editor is more complicated especially for new users. I wish they had both options for everyone and they can pick which they prefer.

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja.

  22. You’ve pointed out the very common mistakes people make. Thanks

    1. Thanks so much, hope it helps.

      1. I’m sure it does.

  23. I know my blog has many of these issues, thankfully it is still a hobby 😃

    1. When it’s blogging is a hobby it’s a lot easier to just enjoy it and not worry too much about the mistakes 😁

  24. I took a peek at the sample of your book- you are so brave to speak it and get it out there- the poems are beautiful and melancholy and it reminded me of my own deep writing inspirations that hit me when only when I’m depressed. Love you and take care. We can heal. We can do this.

    1. Thank you, that’s very kind of you to say. Some of those poems were written when I was at my worst. It helped me really understand how I was feeling and express myself. Yes, we can definitely heal it just takes some work. Thanks again.

  25. Thankfully! I’m surviving here till now.😄

    1. That’s great!

  26. Your helpful tips are greatly appreciated. Thank you, Pooja. 🙏🏻

    1. Thank you so much 😊

  27. Agree with every one of these. Now how to reach those who need to read them!

    1. Thanks so much, let’s hope it finds them!

    1. Thanks so much. I find the limited space so ridiculous because there are so many that blog just to share images.

  29. You’re so good!

  30. I had no idea about more than 15 tags being marked as spam!! Thanks for letting know, such an important thing to be aware of. Great post, very insightful! ☺️✨️💗

    1. Yeah, WordPress is not doing a good job letting people know about the tags and categories limit so I thought I would mention it. Thank you! ☺️💕

  31. Thanx for the tips! Great blog as usual! One question if I may ask…? How can I change settings for E-mail? When I post a new blog, my followers receive a mail with my complete blogtext. When you post a blog, I only see a part of it in my mail. How does it work? I can’t find it…
    Blessings, karin

    1. You’re most welcome. That’s an easy fix, don’t worry. Go to Settings -> News Letter and you’ll see an option that says “For each new post email, include:” and there pick excerpt and save settings.

  32. Yes, Girlfriend, you are right, as always. So many good points here. It also shows how little someone cares about their blog when the generic header remains. Thank you for this important post.

    1. Thanks so much. I so agree, when someone puts time into editing their blog and making it user friendly it really shows.

  33. I read your title and my first thought was “Oh crud, what am I doing wrong?” Happy to say, not much! I do need to make sure my About section is up to date, made a note to do that this weekend. Thanks for the informative list, Pooja! 💞💞💞

    1. Oh good, glad you’re doing things well and not making these mistakes! 😊

  34. Great advice. I probably do everything wrong!

    1. Thank you, don’t worry there’s always time to improve!

  35. Yesss, these are good points! So true on regarding the ‘about me’ page, that’s honestly the first page I check for when discovering new bloggers. ☺️ It’s fun getting to know them and seeing their personality, interests and reasons for writing!! 💗 Definitely important to have one.

I need to work on the taking breaks unannounced for sure. 😅 Thank you for sharing all these blogging tips. ^_^

    1. Thank you so much! Yes, I think most people check for an About page before anything else. We want to know what their blog is like before deciding to follow! 😊

  36. Hey Pooj,

    I really appreciate your thoughts.

I didn’t know that WordPress flags a post as spam if it has too many categories/tags. With that, I assume this guidance (“You should only be using a combination of 15 tags and categories…”) is per post, not for a website as a whole.

Also, do you recommend having a separate “About Me” page? Or is having it on your main landing page ok?

    1. Hey, I’m happy to share the information. Yes, it’s a combination of categories and tags per post not overall.

I think having your About page as your landing page is okay. The main thing is that it’s there and easy for readers to find.

  37. Thanks A Bunch!! 🤣😎🙃

    1. Happy to share!

  38. […] more about what inspired my recent decision to craft a newer about me page, then go check out this post from P.J. Gudka over at Lifesfinewhine. If by some chance you haven’t heard of her yet, then […]

  39. I need to add an about page as I have restarted the entire site.

    1. Yes, About Me pages are really important for readers.
