Note: “Wednesday Season 2 Part 2 Review” contains major spoilers. If you haven’t finished season 2 and want to avoid spoilers please don’t read ahead.
I finished Wednesday season 2 part 2 pretty much almost as soon as it came out but haven’t had the time to share a proper review yet so I thought I would do so today. I was hoping that this part would resolve some of the discrepancies in the first part of the season. And so I was disappointed that this was not the case for most of the plot issues. You can read my thoughts on the first part of the season here.
What I Enjoyed
I absolutely loved Lady Gaga’s cameo, she’s perfect for the vibe of the show and did an excellent job. In fact, most of the cameo’s as well as the new stars that were on season 2 were amazing. I really enjoyed Grandmama too. It seems her character is going to be very different than the original one we’re used to in The Addams Family but I don’t mind because the actress is fantastic.
I love seeing more of Tyler and Wednesday because they have the craziest dynamic and I’m obsessed. The fact that she saved him instead of killing him had me so happy. And I know you’re probably thinking he’s a murderer why are you shipping him with Wednesday? Well, this is Wednesday Addams we’re talking about. I don’t think murder is high on her list of red flags lol.
The ending was perfect and had me hoping the next season comes out a lot faster than this one did lol. I feel like we’ve unlocked a family member with Ophelia and like they did with Grandmama it seems the character will be a lot darker than it was in earlier adaptations. Can’t wait to see the face reveal in like another three years…
What I Didn’t Enjoy
There were a lot of things that I found problematic with the plot i.e they didn’t work with season 1 or they just didn’t make sense overall. Let’s get into it.
Plot
One of the biggest discrepancies in the plot for me was Tyler’s mum and Morticia being on good terms when they first ran into one another. Why is the world would Francoise not be mad at Morticia for causing the death of her brother considering she and Isaac seem (weirdly) obsessed with one another. That made no sense to me.
Weems knowing Francoise well enough to almost have been her bridesmaid ruined the plot of season 1 because if Weems was aware that Francoise was a hyde why was she so skeptic about Tyler been one. So much so that she lost her life over it. That makes no sense.
Why were they trying to stop Isaac from removing the Francoise’s hyde? I get in the end because of the Gomez/Pugsley thing. But why did they try to stop him initially when Morticia and Gomez hadn’t revealed what they did yet? Wouldn’t it be a good thing if she didn’t hyde anymore and wouldn’t that sort of technology save lives? That was weird to me.
Lastly, would it not have been a giant red flag for Morticia and Gomez to see Isaac and Francoise again? Like they were way to chill with that if you ask me. And I get that being cold and aloof is the Addams way but they’ve always been protective about their kids and would have warned them about something that was this big of a deal. Especially after Gomez saw Isaac and Morticia talked to Francoise.
General
I’m not a fan of the Moticia vs Wednesday trope which seems to have worsened in season 2. I feel like originally, the Addams were always very close with one another. It seems the writers of the show have taken Wednesday having strong boundaries and brutally honest opinions and turned it into her having disdain for her family and in particular towards her mother. I feel like Wednesday and Morticia always respected one another even if they had their differences especially because the Addams are supposed to be the opposite of what was the norm for families at the time and so they encouraged their kids to be themselves unapologetically.
The ending literally felt like it was recycled from season 1. You’re telling me this season took THREE YEARS to make and they couldn’t have come up with a more original ending? Her parents accidentally murdering someone, covering it up and eventually their kids get involved in something and they’re forced to reveal it. It’s exactly the same as season 1 with slight tweaks. If this is how season 3 ends too, I’m writing a letter to Netflix.
Finally, I still don’t like Luis Guzmán as Gomez. In general, I really like Luis Guzmán and thought he was awesome as a guest on Community. However, I just don’t think he’s passionate enough to be Gomez. And to be clear it has nothing to do with his looks. Many pointed out online that he was cast as Gomez because he looked similar to the original Gomez in the comic and I agree. However, Gomez has always been a dramatic and passionate person and I just don’t see that here. For whatever reason, he just seems to fall flat on the show.
My Predictions For Season 3…
I thought it would be fun to share some predictions for season 3 and see if any of them come true.
- Lurch will have a bigger role in season 3 and we’ll see more about his backstory.
- Tyler will save Wednesday’s life at some point as a thank you for sparing his this season.
- Wednesday will help Enid turn back somehow- this one’s obvious.
- There will be a plot twist where Ophelia isn’t actually trying to kill Wednesday she’s trying to save her.
- Grandmama will start out as a villain but it will eventually be revealed that she was trying to protect her family.
Overall
Despite having a lot of criticisms with the plot, I actually did very much enjoy this season of Wednesday. I think I’m more critical because they literally had three years to perfect it and still left so much in there that either didn’t work with season 1 or just didn’t make sense in general. But again, it was still interesting enough to keep me watching till the end and I will definitely, without a doubt, be watching season 3.
Also, if anyone has explanations for the issues I pointed out in the plot feel free to share them. I don’t have the best attention span and sometimes I miss stuff lol.
