How Do You Feel About WordPress?

How WordPress Works | I'm done with WordPress | Things I Would Change About WordPress | The Random WordPress Changes Are Far From Random | Six Word Story| How To Create An Algorithm Friendly Post | Features I Wish WordPress Had | Today, I want to ask you guys to share your thoughts about WordPress. How do you feel about WordPress as a blogging platform?

Today, I want to ask you guys to share your thoughts about WordPress. How do you feel about WordPress as a blogging platform? Be as specific as you like and share as much as you like in the comments below. What do you love about WordPress that keeps you here? What are things you wish they would change on this platform? Also, if there was a new blogging platform available that had all the stuff you love and not all the stuff you dislike here, would you consider joining it?

I’m not losing my mind and asking you this for no reason. I was actually talking to a good friend of mine that I met via blogging. Although they have since stopped using this platform, we still keep in touch. Anyway, they were telling me that they miss blogging but have no plans to come back to WordPress because of all the changes that have made this platform more difficult and expensive to use.

And honestly, I understood because when I started blogging WordPress was so easy and efficient. Sure, it wasn’t as fancy as it is now but you know what, it ran so well. I never had to deal with constant glitches, paying for things that should be part of the free plan (like posting videos or customer care), and the stats were actually accurate.

Anyway, I’m very curious to learn about how you currently feel about WordPress and whether it’s just me that struggles with the changes sometimes.

I recently published my first book and would be honoured if you check it out here.

  1. It is expensive

      1. A few extra charges have appeared over the years

        1. That’s no good, sorry to hear about that
I have only used my free account for years, never tried to upgrade

          1. Upgrading is good but wait for deals or search for them. You can save a bit

            1. Oh, I wasn’t aware of those, thanks

              1. The other thing covered by WordPress is security or legal structure. Irish management (oldest language educators on the planet) and Israeli product. WordPress is secure

    1. You’re not wrong.

    2. Yeah and the free plan doesn’t offer much which is what I think is most frustrating.

      1. It’s not much use. My business system probably would work better if I employed someone who also has access to my blog

        1. That’s fair, if you’re ever interested I offer blog management services. No pressure or anything though.

          1. That’s good to know. I need to be able to upload my recorded music to my blog. I am building a horizontal network of creative collaborators

            1. Oh I see, that’s really cool. Hope you can get it all up on your blog.

              1. Will be good to get my music to a bigger audience. Will practice in the park again today. My blog will require editing again soon. Using google analytics for it these days. Will work on monetisation

                1. Good luck with it all, hope it goes well.

                  1. You too. The war has started now. Communication on WordPress has some advantages

  2. It’s a convenient place to share my stories and poems and has a wide audience. I’ve been blogging since Yahoo 360 one of the pioneers and one by one they’ve folded but WordPress seems to be resilient.

    1. I think WordPress having a strong community helps keep it alive. Many of us stay for that.

    2. Man, Yahoo 360! There’s a name I haven’t heard in a while.

  3. I don’t have anything to compare it to but I do find trying to figure some thigs out a bit complicated but I have worked through those. I don’t know what is expensive? I bought my domain and have had no expenses here other than the one yearly fee. What expenses am I missing and what other platforms are there? I never looked.

    1. I heard good things about Medium, but I’m not ready for a transition, I’m fairly content with WP

    2. Yeah, I think with a paid plan it’s pretty worth it. But the issue some bloggers have is that they’re not able to or willing to upgrade because blogging is a hobby for them and back in the day the free plan came with lots of stuff but at this point (esp with the lack of storage) it feels like there’s no choice but to upgrade.

    Do I like WordPress? Yes.

Why? Because here I can share my writing, something I truly feel called to do. I can share God’s Word, testimonies, my life, and my journey without being judged or criticized. Instead, I’m encouraged.

Here, I’m able to write what God places on my heart to brighten someone’s day or remind them there is Hope, even in the darkest valley. That matters to me.

The people on WordPress have been incredibly supportive, even more than some close to me, and for that I will always be grateful.

Unlike other platforms where it often feels like, “Look at me,” WordPress feels different. People are kind. They listen. And when correction is needed, it’s done with respect.

I am thankful for the friendships here and blessed to call many of you brother and sister. That means more than words can say.

    1. That’s so true for many of us. This community is absolutely wonderful and it’s what keeps many of us here.

  5. GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
most of the time I am okay….but the other day I tried to write about my challenges with blood tests and blood donations….and I’m guessing because I was using the words needles, maybe blood WordPress refused to let me post my post WTF!?

    1. Oh wow, I didn’t know they did that sort of thing. That sucks.

  6. I love posting my thoughts and reading other people’s thoughts, I love WordPress, it works for me.

But I understand others have different perspectives and challenges.

    1. Yeah, I think for the most part it’s a wonderful platform to be on.

  7. I have been with WordPress for over ten years with different blogs along the way. Las Vegas Photoblog has been on the internet since 2016. I have seen some things taken away from we users such as the ability to purchase more storage space.

The plans that WP has today are ridiculously overpriced and lack options that we should have. The owners of this platform need to think real hard about what they are offering their user base, and it’s a big one.

There is no reason for more plans to have the ability to use plugins as an example. The functionality of sites without them is diminished. I could say more but that’s enough.

    1. I think that’s the biggest issue with WP. Back in the day, you could do so much even with a free plan but now it’s the bare minimum and it sort of feels like they’re trying to force people into paid plans by not letting them using the majority of the features without one. And totally agree with the plugins point, I think the Premium Plan should come with plugin access considering the cost of it.

      1. Agreed! People deserve more.

  8. I also like Word Press because I had so much to learn and am still learning and they have always been very helpful and kind. I appreciate that.

    1. Yeah, there’s a lot to learn here and a wonderful community.

  9. WordPress is honestly kind of a rip-off for what you get, but weirdly enough, the price tag is what keeps me writing ✍️ Since I’m paying for the Premium Plan just to get the features I want, it forces me to stay consistent and actually stick with blogging. I’ve been at this for 10 years so I’m not going to quit now. Also, I’ve been on a roll lately and really want to keep this momentum going. 😆😅

WordPress was never actually “free.” They make it look that way, but the free version is uselessly barren, and the paid plans really just a “pay to play” subscription plan. Honestly, it feels like that’s where everything is headed these days.

    1. Yeah, I think the plans should offer a lot more considering the price and the fact that a lot of people are just blogging as a hobby and not making money off it. But I can see how that can be an incentive too lol 😂
When I first started blogging, the “free” plan was so worth it. I used it for years because the storage was much higher and we could access so many more features. Now, you literally can’t do anything except the bare minimum which feels so greedy. Like they’re trying to force people into using the paid plans.

  10. 🙏🌹👍

    Aum Shanti

  11. It is very expensive for what you get. If I could move everything to another platform I totally would.

    1. Yeah, the prices are quite high and the free plan offers so little these days.

  12. I haven’t tried any other platforms except WP. I think the best thing about WP is its community. The changes made over time aren’t that difficult and now I find them easy to navigate. On medium, there is not much interaction with other bloggers.

    1. I agree, the community is what keeps many of us here. It’s really wonderful.

      1. Absolutely 👍🏼

    1. Yeah, when the Block Editor was first introduced they really pushed it onto bloggers but thankfully I figured out a way to retain the Classic Editor. It has certain options the Block Editor doesn’t and is so much easier to use. And yes, I remember when the Business Plan had unlimited storage but since then it’s just gotten less and less. So disappointing. The community is what really keeps me here, I’ve made so many friends that I would hate to lose.

      1. Me too
        Thanks
        Dear Pooja
        ☺️🙌🎶🌻

        1. Most welcome 🤗

  14. I completely relate! WordPress has so many strengths flexibility, customization, and a massive community of users but some of the recent changes have definitely made it more complex and expensive than before. I miss the days when posting, embedding videos, and tracking stats felt effortless. If a new platform came along that kept all the good stuff and simplified the rest, I’d absolutely consider giving it a try. Thanks for sparking this conversation it’s nice to hear others’ perspectives!

    1. Yes, exactly! It has so many strengths but I feel like it’s headed in a direction that isn’t user friendly. I wish they would offer more free features, make less design changes and actually listen to their users.

  15. To be honest, I’m finding it difficult to navigate and frustrating.
I began blogging several years ago and the app then was fairly easy and straightforward. Unfortunately, my life became super busy and I found myself using it less and less, so I decided to delete it.
Just recently I’ve become a little disengaged from life. Work, sleep, eat, repeat. To get myself out of this slump it was suggested I take up something I used to enjoy doing. I sat and thought for a while and remembered there were a couple of things I really enjoyed which made me happy. Writing was one and history was the other. Brainwave… begin blogging again and take history courses. Of course I thought, WordPress immediately, downloaded it, began setting everything up, but I’ve had nothing but issues. It won’t let me download photos, it keeps asking me to allow permissions. I’ve done all of it, I can’t give any more permissions than it allows. It wouldn’t verify my email. I’m that fed up with it, I’m thinking of uninstalling it and trying a different blog site. I’m not very tech savvy at the best of times, I just about scrape through and that’s it. It is putting me off using it altogether

    1. I’m glad you’ve decided to blog again but yeah there’s so many more glitches and complications now than back in the day. WordPress has become much more difficult to use, navigate, and set up. Plus, the stats are no longer accurate which I feel is a huge flaw. Unfortunately, other blogging platforms seem to be even worse.
Also, yay for history courses- let me know if you find any good ones. I’ve been thinking of taking some myself.

      1. I’ve been doing a few that’s work related but my passion is history. I completed my diploma in archaeology a few months ago, but now I’m torn between which subjects I want to continue with for my degree. As consolation I’ve just started one on the Highlander Clans, as I have highlander ancestry. So far it’s been really interesting, especially because my husband also has highlander ancestry on the opposing side… oops!! 😁

        1. Ooh so fun. I took an archeology course when I was getting my degree but ended up majoring in History. That’s so interesting, must be cool to learn about that- hopefully being from opposing sides won’t mess things up lol 😂

  16. So frustrating and expensive. This is the end of my blogging. I’m having to shut my blog after 11 years because they are charging me £399 to renew. Not worth it.

    1. That’s such a shame, I know you’ve been here on WP for a long time. Have you considered downgrading to a more affordable plan?

  17. I have been with WordPress for about 15 years. There were a few years where I had upgraded to a paying site…but I am now back to the original free blog site.
Personally, I didn’t see any sense to pay to blog. My blog isn’t my job. I don’t make any $$ from my blog.
I have friends who have substack & medium, but both cost $$. I tried medium for 1 year, but when it was time to pay again..I quit. I used to have a blogger, but WordPress is easier.

    1. Yeah, I think this is probably the best platform out there at the moment but it is quite costly with the plans. It makes sense to stay on the free plan if you’re just blogging as a hobby.

  18. 1) The switch from the wysiwyg editor to the block editor was the worst change imo. I’m fully invested in the block editor now, but it used to be that if you knew how to use a word processor program, you could use wordpress with almost no hiccups. It was easy and intuitive and was conducive to just sitting and banging out your thoughts. The block editor isn’t any of those things. It might be great for business oriented people, but for the casual blogger, it is bad.

    2) The constant “breakage” of little things because code monkeys are working in the background. An example is the scheduling calendar. For about 2 months it wouldn’t show scheduled posts, because the code monkeys had been messing around with something else and broke the calendar. It was eventually fixed, but the mind set of “we’ll do whatever we want, and to hell with the consequences’ is very apparent and extremely off putting.

    3) The support forums. It used to be a vibrant, lively place where users helped each other out and the staff was there to fix the things we couldn’t. Now? It is a wasteland. Regular people have been silenced (banned on the forums) and the “staff” are a completely rotating bunch of names. I’m pretty sure half of the “staff’ are just ai and not real people at all.

    4) The monetization of the free blogs. The ads are atrocious if you don’t have adblockers installed on your browser. They also used to have ads inserted INSIDE the posts themselves. I don’t know if they still do that, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they do.

    5) Coupled with #4, the removal of features, one by one. Free users used to get 3gb of storage space, now they get 1gb. Stats used to be fully accessible, now free users just get basic info and you have to buy the “premium” plan to get anything actually usable.

    A) The only good thing I like about WP is that the notification system works really well. It keeps track of all my comments on all the blogs I comment on and lets me know when people like/comment, etc. I’d have gone back to blogspot long ago if it weren’t for the notifications. Blogger doesn’t have those, as such, and it really makes a difference.

    B) I would switch to another blogging platform in a heartbeat if it had a wysiwyg editor and a really good notification system.

    1. Totally agree with every single point except my notification system doesn’t show me my pingbacks sometimes 🙁
I think the problem is that they keep changing things and trying to cut down on costs (like replacing people with AI) but all that does is make things more difficult for users. And at this point, the free plan offers almost nothing which is so unfair. Most people don’t want a paid plan for a hobby and it’s weird to try to force them into upgrading.

  19. The cost has gotten outta control for WordPress. Aside from that, I truly have no issues with WordPress. It does what I need it to, and I’ve learned to be patient and deal with the glitches. They eventually pass.

I have no desire of going anywhere else for my personal website/blog. I’ve been there and done that, and I came right back to WordPress.

    1. Yeah, I think the cost is the biggest issue other than the constant changes (but that’s usually okay for a lot of people, I just personally don’t like constant changes lol). With the cost, I feel like not only are the charges high but they also don’t offer as much as they used to so it’s not even that worth it. 🙁

      1. I hate to say it, but you’ll have constant changes anywhere digitally. Every platform wants to keep up with the latest and greatest, and each tries its best to function at their best, so they’re going to do what they must to make sure that is the case.

        1. Oh for sure, I just have this thing where change messes me up idk why. It’s very much a me problem 😂

  20. I, too, am sometimes a little surprised by the changes WordPress makes. But using a free plan, I can’t complain.
I must add that I really enjoy the community of friends that has formed here on this platform.

    1. Yeah, the community here is amazing and what keeps many of still using the platform.

      1. Thank you for the kind reply 🌷🙏🌷

        1. You’re most welcome 💗

  21. Well, I’ve had my up and downs with WordPress. I went self-hosted for a couple of years, and was disappointed. So back to WordPress, and I experimented with the Business plan for a few years, but it’s much too expensive for a poetry blog. I’m on the Premium plan, and use a Full-Site Editing theme, which allows me more freedom with my blog’s appearance. Aside from the glitches, I like WordPress, especially the community.

    1. Yeah, I had the same experience with self-hosting. It’s too much work and not as much fun. The community here is the best, I think it’s mainly why I love it here.

  22. For me WP is fine it does what I ask it to do. I don’t use most of it, so changes and expenses don’t bother me.

    1. Yeah, that’s totally fair.

  23. Hi Pooja. Honestly I don’t feel like blogging as often on WordPress anymore. Like it used to be a constant need of mine, getting views, replies etc. One day I realized posting on wordpress or social media in general doesn’t exactly help or benefit my ability to write and the joy and passion it should be bringing me. I’ll always be thankful for the connections and moments on here, yet right now at least I’m not in the mood for blogging. And this is helping me focus on other important needs, working on my manuscripts etc.

    1. That makes sense, I think when we put too much pressure on ourselves to post or up our stats it takes the fun out of it. Glad to hear that, hope your writing is going well.

  24. Hi Pooja, good question. I have just resumed blogging after a long break. As for WordPress, I have mostly enjoyed this platform for its supportive community, but today it really tested my patience. I tried experimenting by switching my free theme from a classic one to a block theme, and honestly, I was at my wits’ end. Simple things suddenly felt complicated, and the editing experience became frustrating instead of creative. It felt like groping in the dark. In the end, I quietly returned to my old theme just to get my sanity back. WordPress is still home for me, but I do wish it stayed simpler for everyday bloggers.

    1. Nice to see you back to blogging. Yeah, the block editor is really difficult to use and it’s taken away a lot of great features older themes had. For sure, simpler is always better and the new design changes make things unnecessarily complicated.

  25. I have been on WordPress for years, and it is the only place I could have four themed blogs for free. I cannot afford to have a paid platform. I can share my work on social media, and it is easy for me to post on there.

    1. Yeah, that’s totally fair.

  26. You’re preaching to the choir and I get it totally. There are glitches for sure and things have changed which is totally annoying but it the community I stay for and love.❤️

    1. Yeah, the glitches are annoying but the community is the best!

  27. I have only just started my journey here, so I will let the seasoned bloggers answer your question. So far though, I have connected with so many amazing people and that is priceless!

    1. I’m glad you’re enjoying it so far- imo the community is the best part!

  28. I like the genuine nature of the unique people, and the way they use WordPress. The platform makes it possible .

    1. The community here is amazing, it’s what keeps the platform alive.

  29. So WordPress to me is somewhere between adequate and fine. I don’t like the added complications, I mean updates, that probably associate with added costs. Microsoft updates, too; and I find those updates, too, often needless as well as needlessly complicated. Both groups are not so good at communicating changes, though they might believe they are. But once I sort through the changes, I still find myself using WordPress (and Microsoft), falling into the pattern I know (expecting new frustrations, I suppose) and enjoying mostly what I still think functions as a lively and respectful, blogging community. Thanks for asking. I hope you’re having a fine, not too-hot week.

    1. Updates are unfortunately unavoidable these days but I think WP has some great things too like the community. Thanks, it’s become quite nice and rainy now so I can’t complain. Hope you’re doing well too, have you been able to solve the issues with your apartment yet?

      1. I’m pleased to hear the rain has come and the weather’s good. I’m still trying to find a new place to live. A complicated process especially with rents so high, even in small towns. Sigh. I was at the doctor’s today to learn how to deal with what I’ve been breathing. Thanks for asking!

        1. Oh no, I hope you find an affordable place soon. Yeah, living with mold etc can cause so many health issues.

  30. I’m still a fan. It’s a nice community to be part of, even if there are occasional tech glitches…

    1. Yeah, the community is really the best part.

  31. I like WP for the most part. There has been some recent change that’s creating a glitch with the mobile app. When I click “like” or “comment” from my phone it starts to do a weird glitch where it revolves endlessly between the email app and the WP app. It’s like seeing a machine in a casino go through the spinning cycle. except the WP app never lands. I have to read everyone’s posts and be able to comment only with my laptop. I prefer to use my phone for social media!

    1. Yeah, multiple people I know have had the same issue with the app. I just use it on Chrome so I haven’t dealt with it but I can see how it can be annoying. It’s much easier to be able to just use the app on your phone but WP it seems works best on the laptop.

  32. I really like having a place to visit almost everyday where people “get” me. In some form, we are all interested in writing. Trust me, I have relatives who don’t get the interest in it or the drive to create. I don’t have to explain myself here. And hey, you’re right. It’s not cheap, but I appreciate that they haven’t raised their plan pricing yet on me and it’s been almost 7 years. Thanks, Pooja!

    1. I can so relate, this is honestly the best creative outlet and the best community for writers/creative folks imo. Definitely not cheap but it’s worth it for many of us. Thanks!

      1. I haven’t tried other platforms, so WP is my only experience. Keep me posted if there is another one gaining traffic and fits our need for bonding with other writers! (It seemed like maybe you were hinting at that, but maybe not.) 😊

        1. I’ve been hearing some whispers about another platform that’s being created by users for users so will definitely let you know if anything works out with that 😊

  33. I like WordPress. They have a great reputation as a website provider, and the blogging features are good for what I need. I know a lot of people are moving to Substack, but I think you have more control with WordPress. I think the key is to keep everything simple. I haven’t had any issues so far.

    1. I don’t really like Substack because in my opinion it lacks the community we have here and is more difficult to use. True, keeping it simple helps.

      1. I opened an account on Substack because I have a couple of friends there, but it feels stressful every time I go on that platform, so I don’t really like it either. I agree with you about our community here.

  34. I have no complaints about WordPress because it is free for me. If I were paying anything for it (which I wouldn’t), I would likely be disappointed.

    1. Yeah, it’s worth it for a free blog especially for people blogging as a hobby.

  35. To be honest, it has been so long since I posted anything, I am probably not completely aware of all the changes. I do like the community here, so I keep coming back for that reason. Thank you for all of your great posts even though you are incredibly busy these days.

    1. Yeah, the community is the best part for many of us. Thanks so much, I really miss posting daily mostly because I miss communicating with everyone in the comments but I’m trying not to burn out and have some kind of a balance.

  36. Lots of thoughts about this! The commenting/community is the best part. I used to love the platform until they moved to Blocks. This made actually writing on the site much harder.

Keep writing and stay on WordPress though! 🙂

    1. Yeah, I think the Blocks make it harder for users but still it’s a great platform to social and share content. Thank you, I don’t plan on going anywhere anytime soon haha!

  37. There are two things that give me a hard time on WordPress.
1.The format of posts keeps changing. I usually edit my work so well but when I publish it, some paragraphs are misaligned and so are the sentences.
    2. WordPress is banned in my country so I can fully access it using VPN. This is more of a country problem and less of a WordPress problem.

    1. Both of those sound annoying. I didn’t know WP was banned there. I have the same formatting issue sometimes, it’s quite irritating.

  38. I’m hooked since many years ago! It is so fun to have this space to write, share and a beautiful and genuine community to exchange with!! love it and it’s worthy the investment.🥰🙏🏽💖

    1. So true, this community is amazing! 😊

  39. I think the one BIG drawback to WordPress (especially on the free plan) is the access to decent themes that make the blog welcoming. I’ve found that their new ‘editor’ mode for the themes are great if you find a good theme that allows you to change the color palette.

I can see how the bocke editor and theme editor can be a learning curve, but I happen to like these aspects once I get the theme I want. As for writing, there is really no other blogging platform out there that’s easily accessible (WordPress dominates in this area). The dashboard can use a bit of updating and unfortunately the free version limits access to metrics and analytics if you’re trying to grow.

    1. Yeah, I understand both. I think the main thing is that they need to go back to offering more on the free plan. The memory/storage is also too little.

  40. I stay for the community here alone. I also use Substack and post most of my pieces in both locations.

    1. Yeah, same here. The community is wonderful. 💗

  41. […] friend, Pooj, over at Life’s Fine Whine, brought up some issues with WordPress in a recent post. There are many challenges with WordPress, but there are some seriously powerful elements, too. As […]

  42. I like WP the community is cool. Really chill. I’m not expected to perform for an algorithm. Though wish it was easier to find more active blogs.

    1. Yeah, I like the community here too which is great. The best way to find more active blogs is the discover page. I’ve found lots which I like there.

  43. I haven’t left WordPress because of all the people who I have met here. Everyone here is friendly and supportive. Now, I have noticed that the platform can be confusing to use at times but I only have the free plan.

    1. Yeah, I think a lot of stick around because this community is really wonderful.

    1. Yeah, I think we all feel that way!

  45. I had a whole website on wordpress. It was a nightmarea as they changed software and updated etc etc. Now am on wix for my website and it works fantastic. Still use an old wordpress blog once a month but its not fun to use. Wix took me just one easter to design another site myself many years ago it was that easy to use. Takes a bit of getting used to but the customer service is amazing.

    1. Yeah, I can totally relate. My site for my other business is on Wix and it’s just so much easier and has much better customer care for sure.
