Art, Anxiety And An Ouch

I thought I would give you guys another little update on what’s going on with me at the moment and also an update on my art stuff. As you may know since I mentioned it a few of my posts I started doing some art again because it sort of helped with my anxiety. I did it on apps because I don’t have a lot of art supplies right now and also it’s just easier to do it on my phone. My anxiety has been a lot better over the last few months in general but I was looking for a relaxing hobby and I saw online that a lot of people recommended art. Studies on art therapy have shown that art can help people with anxiety feel more calmer and also express themselves better through art. And then I wrote a throwback post about my site way back when I started and saw some posts about the charcoal art I used to do and remembered how much fun that was and decided to take up art again.

It has actually helped me with my anxiety. To elaborate a bit more on that- my anxiety causes problems with my concentration. It makes it a bit more difficult for me to concentrate on something and I also get distracted pretty easily when my anxiety is high but with art I need to fully concentrate on the artwork and that has helped me with concentration and staying focused.

I also find art therapeutic because as someone with anxiety my brain is always switched on. Like it’s always chattering in the background and being annoying. There is no off switch and the constant noise can get frustrating sometimes. With art this noise kind of automatically shuts off or I guess I can easily fully ignore it because my brain is fully concentrating on the art and on what I’m doing at that moment. Those I think are the main ways that art and colouring has helped me with controlling my anxiety. It’s also a lot of fun just in general- it is kind of like being a child again which is always a fun treat when you are an adult struggling to adult. In case you were wondering what app I used for colouring it was Paint.Book.

I have always loved colouring but truth be told I’m more of a drawing person. I like drawing a lot and wanted to draw stuff from scratch. Now the only problem is I’m not great with drawing and I’ve never drawn on my phone before so I did not really know how to do that and it was a lot more difficult than actual drawing but I really enjoyed the challenge and I think I am very slowly but surely getting better at it now that I am getting the hang of how it works.

So, I also got a artbook app where you can basically draw and colour things from scratch and do whatever you want- you’re not limited to what the app provides you with. I’m not going to lie I’ve been binge watching The Simpsons for the last few months so I decided to draw Bartholomew Simpson AKA Bart Simpson. I know it doesn’t look a lot like Bart but this was my first try drawing anything with an app so cut me some slack! I am currently working on the rest of the family.

Moving on to the ouch part. So two days ago I burnt two of my fingers while cooking and yesterday I burnt the side of hand/palm. It’s my right hand and it’s the fingers I use to type so it has been kind of difficult for me to type properly at the moment. If you see any typos in this post or in response to any of your comments I’m not having a stroke it’s just hard for me to type with my left hand. It’s also going to take me a while to respond to your comments as I’m going to have to type slower than usual. My posts may also be a bit shorter than usual this week apart from the ones that I had written prior to the incidents. You may have noticed that I only put up two quotes yesterday even though I usually put up four or five but that was because I literally could not make more than those two.

In other news, have almost reached a 50 day streak on Duolingo which is super exciting. I was excited to tell you guys that because last time I had lost my 52 day streak and was feeling a little down about it. The weather is getting a bit cooler which is awesome- no offense to people who love summer but I am so looking forward to fall. Oh and as always my WP was acting up over the last few days- my reader stopped working and then some of my comments were either not posting at all or if they posted they went to spam so yeah… That’s about it for this update. Again sorry about any typos but I’m doing the best I can.

  1. I have suffered with anxiety, stress, and panic disorder pretty much all my life. 65 or more years. Being a 24/7 caregiver for my husband, the only thing that gets me through is working out. Thank the Lord for boxing and lifting.

    1. I am so glad you have your own way of dealing with the stress and anxiety because it can really become a lot if you don’t have an outlet.

  2. I’m glad you’re drawing too and your picture of Bart Simpson looks just like him. Art is a great activity to focus on and to find some freedom from anxiety. I like drawing in a sketch book I haven’t tried on an app before though so maybe I will like it too. Great work! Feel better, no more ouch’s ok? 😃

  3. I took a class in art therapy in college. It was so much fun and the anxiety I had simply fled. I find swinging on a swing helps my anxiety and depression too. Also hoping that you put aloe vera on your burns. Just keep applying it, either from an aloe plant or the gel that is sold in stores. It helps amazingly. Feel better soon! I’m praying for you 🤗!

    1. I have a swing back home and it does help but unfortunately I don’t have one where I’m staying right now. I put some aloe gel on it and it already feels better so thank you so much for the suggestion!

  4. I too use drawing and sketching as an anxiety reliever, Though I can’t do it nicely! I even enjoy cleaning rooms and doing all the cleanings just to get relief from that anxiety. Thankyou for sharing this post and yes, Get well soon! ❤️

  6. I was always bad at art when I was younger but admire people who are artistic when it comes to sketches and paintings. For me writing is a release when I feel anxious or depressed.

    1. I’m not great at art either and it did not help that I came from a family of people who were so good at art but I try my best. Writing helps me a lot too- I feel like if it wasn’t for blogging I would be a bit of mess right now.

  7. I used to draw a while back, maybe 8 years ago. I remember I have this huge sketch book where I would draw portraits of my friends with a charcoal pencil. It was fun until my younger brother who was maybe 3 or 4 years old at the time decided to color them like a coloring book without my knowledge and the faces turned to reds and blues! 😅😅 I have not picked up drawing materials since then. 😅 Not that I don’t want to, it’s just that I became attracted to other creative activities.   8. I am not great at art but I do love to colouring. It is very therapeutic. I have been learning German on and off for a while now. I used to live in Munich and I really want to learn the language better. I have an 8 day streak on duolingo so hopefully I can keep it going. Great post 😊

  10. Hey Pooja. So sorry about your hands, Hope it gets better soon. I love sketching random things on my journal and shading too, it’s always helped to distract me when I’m overthinking as usual. I’m not exactly great at it, but that has never mattered .
    Haven’t tried a paint book before so I’m downloading the App now. Should be fun😄

My daughter graduated as a theatre nurse but because she has always had an interest in art and trained with her grandfather who was a fine artist from childhood she now teaches art at a couple of schools. She was thinking of training to become an art therapist but with two kids to home school that is on hold for the time being. Both my children were raised in India where we worked for twenty years but they now live in the US.

    1. Yeah it can be difficult to go back to college when you have kids especially with everything going on at the moment and most schools/daycare’s etc being closed.

  12. Creativity is always good Pooj.
    My recent achievements include 210 days of consecutive 10K walks. (I’m quite fit) – I even managed to hobble around with a calf strain!
    Apart from that, I am presently working on three different books and have decorated seven rooms.
    It keeps me busy!

  13. I get stressed out too sometimes for no reason at all 😁, but then I go to my balcony with my plants listening to my favorite song and I am fine. I also end up cooking something new at times 😄. I don’t draw but I love coloring, it’s a great stress reliever too. Loved your artwork, cute meow and Bart Simpson 😍. Hope your hand is fine Pooja, take care 🙂.

  14. I’m not much into art or drawing Pooja, mainly because I can’t do it — I’m not artistic at all. But I do know the excellent benefits of art in mental illness. We used to have therapy and art programmes when I worked at the Mental Health Day Hospital. Patients were so focused on their artwork for an afternoon, they ‘forgot’ their voices, their anxiety levels decreased and helped ease their depression.

    1. Yes it helps you forget that voice that’s constantly in your head or the worries you are always thinking of. It’s a very nice break for people with anxiety or depression for sure.

  15. One of my cousins started selling Art and craft products and created a community of ladies on Facebook. I spoke to her once and asked how did she came to the idea of selling art supplies. She told me she was inspired by many Artworks she saw recently and started creating canvas, later turning her passion into business. That helped her coping anxiety of not being able to conceive!
    Please pray for her Pooja! But i’m happy at least she found a way to keep her busy in the form of art.

  16. Love your drawings, they’re so cute! Art is so great for anxiety, I think because it’s such a slow process you really find that you concentrate for such a long time! And it’s so satisfying and empowering to go through the process of creating something. I hope your hand gets better soon 🙂

  17. Cooking, cleaning, reading, writing, gardening, movies, puzzles, even laundry can pull me into a better space when I’m overwhelmed or frustrated. Giving my thoughts something to focus on besides my worries works for me. Creative work seems to provide the best distraction. C

    1. Yeah I feel the same way- when I’m doing something else I don;t worry too much or get stressed out. Distractions help a lot and creative work is definitely one of my favourite distractions.

  19. Art gives me so sort of joy by just looking at it. When I feel off , I just look for art to admire and draw conclusions on. I gave up on Duolingo when I realized how obsessed I was getting with the streaks.

  21. First of all, sorry about your hand 🙁 I hope it gets better soon. Art is one of the things that calms me down too, I love painting mostly as I’ve lost touch with drawing. I used to be so good at it and thought it was some innate stuff so I didn’t practice much in secondary school now I suck at it. I think your first drawing of Bart is awesome and I haven’t been able to paint manually as of recent because my paints are finished but I guess I could try out the app. Thanks for sharing😊.

    1. It’s much better today thank you! I used to love art when I was in High School too but I lost touch with it over the last few years too and I feel like I’m not that good anymore. Yeah the app is quite fun although it’s not the same as actual painting.

  22. Great posts, Lovely art works with beautiful colors. Sorry about your hand, rub balm gently on it and reduce using the affected area for any thing stressful. Though it is not easy because u will have to use your hand. With time it will go.

  23. I started doing art as well just for anxiety relief. I normally draw with colored pencils on paper though. I like the app sketches on my tablet for drawing, can’t imagine trying to draw on my phone though- that would be crazy difficult.

  24. Okay kudos to your title! Im so sorry you burned your yourself not once but twice!!! I hope it heals fast. I actually burned myself too in 2 spots from taking the same pan out the oven. Definitely not as bad as yours.
    Also, your Bart looks EXACTLY like Bart. I’ve never called him Bartholomew so that made me chuckle a bit. I enjoyed this update! 🥰 Oh and congratulations on Duo! I’ve been slacking…

    1. Haha thanks! I burned myself getting something out of the oven too- we seriously need to be more careful!
      Thank you so much! It was my first try so I though the proportions were a bit off but it’s way more difficult to draw on an app than a book. I just don’t want to lose this streak and that’s what’s been fueling me lol!

  25. Nice artwork Pooja. I used to draw a lot in school on paper actually but I stopped after sometime. I regularly doodle something here and there but not like before. It’s real fun and clears the mind.

  26. “…an adult struggling to adult” is a statement in sure many of us can relate to. Some days just seem more difficult than others. I’m glad you’ve found your enjoyment of art again, the pictures you’ve created really do show that. 😊 For me it’s writing or making music. Different days it is a different one. Sometimes music stresses me out, others times writing does. But thankfully usually I can turn to the other to focus my mind and bring it back to reality.

  27. Such a great post. I love your art. I especially like the cat pictures (but then I’m a mad cat lady). I agree that art and creativity are good ways to overcome anxiety. Like yourself, I also suffer from anxiety and when I’m really anxious and stressed I become nauseous. It happened the other week when I was busy sewing face masks for custom orders and my MIL was staying with us, so I was super busy. Last week I took time out and did some art and I also cooked lots of lovely veggie things, both of which helped me to relax. I also enjoy playing the piano and singing. Take good care of and be kind to yourself. I hope you recover from your injuries soon. xx
