Wednesday Review
As I mentioned in some of my last few blog posts, I recently watched Wednesday. I was already a huge fan of The Addams Family and was quite excited/nervous about Wednesday. It’s one of those things that could be amazing or just ruin the whole legacy of The Addams Family. I also mentioned that I would be sharing my Wednesday review soon.
I was pleasantly surprised by how well made and written Wednesday is. And therefore I was excited to share this review of Wednesday with everyone. I decided to break it down to make it easier to follow and to just make the review more organised in general.
Plot
This was what I was most skeptical about. The plot of every The Addams Family movie has been great and I wasn’t sure if Wednesday would live up to that. However, I very much enjoyed the plot of this season. I don’t know how I’ll feel about the rest.
I loved that they stayed true to the gothic vibe because that’s what made me love The Addams Family when I watched it for the first time. And, I also liked that it was so fast paced. The plot did not have any low moments. Every episode was exciting and left you wanting more.
Characters
Again, I was not sure whether I would enjoy the characters. I loved Christina Ricci as Wednesday Addams back in the day. And she played the role so perfectly that I wasn’t sure if Jenna Ortega would live up her version of Wednesday. However, she absolutely nailed it. I loved her acting and thought she made a fantastic Wednesday.
I was so happy they brought back Christina Ricci as Marilyn/Laurel. She did such a great job with her role too. And I think most of the side characters such as Weems, Enid, Dr. Kinbott, Pugsley, Bianca did a wonderful job with their characters and acting.
Xavier and Tyler were also amazing characters. Tyler started out as an interesting and sweet character but did a complete turn towards the end. His acting was fantastic. And I feel that way about Xavier too. I think the two actors they picked for these characters were perfect.
I was surprised to see Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester. In general, I love his acting but I was not sure if he could pull off the role of Uncle Fester which is so iconic. However, I thought he really did pull it off. He was funny, weird and a little creepy. Just like Uncle Fester is supposed to be.
Now onto some character I didn’t really like. I didn’t love Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán as Morticia and Gomez Addams. I have always felt that Morticia and Gomez are very strong characters. When they walk into a room, people notice. When they say something, people stop to listen. They just have this presence. That’s how I felt about them in the 90’s Addams movie. However, neither Catherine Zeta-Jones nor Luis Guzmán brought the energy I had come to expect and love about the Addams’ parents. Neither really made the impact I was looking for. Especially Catherine Zeta-Jones. Moriticia is such a powerful character and I was not getting that from Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Writing
As a writer who has not really written anything of value, I decided I would critique the writing for this show. I absolutely loved it. There were so many funny zingers, actually great advice, emotional monologues and more. I think the writers did a great job keeping the characters interesting and amusing. Like I mentioned, not one episode felt slow or boring.
I really appreciate that the writers stayed true to the original characters too. They made Wednesday as awesome as I remember her.
Overall
Although I did not particularly enjoy Gomez and Morticia’s characters, the rest of the show was fantastic. I loved every episode and can really not complain about any other aspects of the show. I know there were lots of questions and some loose ends left at the end of the season. But I am hoping that just means season two will be as good as this season.
Conclusion
