Wednesday Review

As I mentioned in some of my last few blog posts, I recently watched Wednesday. I was already a huge fan of The Addams Family and was quite excited/nervous about Wednesday. It’s one of those things that could be amazing or just ruin the whole legacy of The Addams Family. I also mentioned that I would be sharing my Wednesday review soon.

I was pleasantly surprised by how well made and written Wednesday is. And therefore I was excited to share this review of Wednesday with everyone. I decided to break it down to make it easier to follow and to just make the review more organised in general.

Plot

This was what I was most skeptical about. The plot of every The Addams Family movie has been great and I wasn’t sure if Wednesday would live up to that. However, I very much enjoyed the plot of this season. I don’t know how I’ll feel about the rest.

I loved that they stayed true to the gothic vibe because that’s what made me love The Addams Family when I watched it for the first time. And, I also liked that it was so fast paced. The plot did not have any low moments. Every episode was exciting and left you wanting more.

Characters

Again, I was not sure whether I would enjoy the characters. I loved Christina Ricci as Wednesday Addams back in the day. And she played the role so perfectly that I wasn’t sure if Jenna Ortega would live up her version of Wednesday. However, she absolutely nailed it. I loved her acting and thought she made a fantastic Wednesday.

I was so happy they brought back Christina Ricci as Marilyn/Laurel. She did such a great job with her role too. And I think most of the side characters such as Weems, Enid, Dr. Kinbott, Pugsley, Bianca did a wonderful job with their characters and acting.

Xavier and Tyler were also amazing characters. Tyler started out as an interesting and sweet character but did a complete turn towards the end. His acting was fantastic. And I feel that way about Xavier too. I think the two actors they picked for these characters were perfect.

I was surprised to see Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester. In general, I love his acting but I was not sure if he could pull off the role of Uncle Fester which is so iconic. However, I thought he really did pull it off. He was funny, weird and a little creepy. Just like Uncle Fester is supposed to be.

Now onto some character I didn’t really like. I didn’t love Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán as Morticia and Gomez Addams. I have always felt that Morticia and Gomez are very strong characters. When they walk into a room, people notice. When they say something, people stop to listen. They just have this presence. That’s how I felt about them in the 90’s Addams movie. However, neither Catherine Zeta-Jones nor Luis Guzmán brought the energy I had come to expect and love about the Addams’ parents. Neither really made the impact I was looking for. Especially Catherine Zeta-Jones. Moriticia is such a powerful character and I was not getting that from Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Writing

As a writer who has not really written anything of value, I decided I would critique the writing for this show. I absolutely loved it. There were so many funny zingers, actually great advice, emotional monologues and more. I think the writers did a great job keeping the characters interesting and amusing. Like I mentioned, not one episode felt slow or boring.

I really appreciate that the writers stayed true to the original characters too. They made Wednesday as awesome as I remember her.

Overall

Although I did not particularly enjoy Gomez and Morticia’s characters, the rest of the show was fantastic. I loved every episode and can really not complain about any other aspects of the show. I know there were lots of questions and some loose ends left at the end of the season. But I am hoping that just means season two will be as good as this season.

Conclusion

  1. You have done justice to your review and highlighted both the goods and bads of the show. After such a detailed review, your recommendation really matters, and I hope the viewers will be in a better position to appreciate Wednesday.

  2. Wednesday review on Wednesday 😝
    It’s in my watchlist
I will soon start The uncanny counter. It looks really good.
You consider watching what I had suggested you before. 🙂

    1. Lol of course I had to post it on a Wednesday 😂
Will be watching Alice In Borderland as soon as the show I’m currently watching is done 😊

                  1. These days I have netflix, otherwise I used to watch on certain websites. However, I got super annoyed with the ads, hence I got netflix. I know some good sites for anime, without ads, so there I am happy. Haha

                    1. Haha that’s fair. I try to use Netflix when possible but they don’t offer some shows in Kenya so I have to use other platforms.

  3. I stopped reading your review midway through the Character section and went to watch it … I’m back after watching episode one and part of episode two … I agree with your thoughts on the Addams parents. I liked what I watched of it, but I doubt I’ll continue to watch it because I don’t watch a whole lot of TV these days. Great review though! 👍

  4. Great review Pooja. I’ve still to watch it as I’m now the only one in the family who has not, BUT I know the whole story and the dance 😂which is now trending on tik tok (my daughter says so😁) and in my home😂

  5. Soooo, I skipped over the entire post once you said it contains spoilers, because I really want to watch the show! But, like every other review, I know it was great! Just not ready to read it, haha

      1. Okay, so I finally watched the show, and it was amazing! I never watched the original movies, so I wouldn’t really know about Gomez and Morticia, but I loved Wednesday! Her character was simply amazing, and i took away some memorable quotes from her, lol. Loved the mystery, loved the characters, and now I’ll be obsessing over it for the next few days 🙂

  6. I didn’t know if I would like it either. My daughter and fiancé both said they liked it. So, as a man is forced to do sometimes, I watched it with them. It wasn’t what I expected. I thought it would be another teenager show, but it wasn’t. I was pleasantly surprised.

    1. Yeah it’s much better than I expected too. I felt the same way, it would be a teenager show which is kind of cheesy. Like Riverdale. But it turned out to be really interesting.

  7. I enjoyed it as well. Like you, I was nervous and worried this might flop. The Addams Family is not to be played with and if it was disappointing Netflix would have gotten a lot of complaints. From the directing to the monologues, everything was wonderful. I can’t wait for season 2!

    1. Totally, The Addams Family is such a classic, I would be one of those people complaining to Netflix lol. Very excited for season 2 as well!

  8. Aaah I have to admit that I skipped reading this post because I have still not watched the series, but it’s on my list! Can’t wait to watch it!!

  9. I think I watched one movie about Adam’s Family long time ago. I can’t remember which one though. And I really like the character Wednesday. Actually at the time I felt that several of my intelligent female friends have similar attributes to Wednesday. I don’t know how to say but I feel that they do share that seething emotion underneath a thin veil of calmness…
