Late night show on Wiz Tv. Saturday. A mic is suspended above Abanga’s head, the beat of his hit song warming up to him as he prepared his voice. The cameraman is busy switching angles. Abanga takes a glance at the crew behind the presenter, sensing unasked questions in their looks about the source of his sudden wealth and rise to fame. They are not alone. It’s the same feeling he gets everywhere he’s been invited. It never mattered that he was broke for years, almost died from hunger and loneliness, and countless producers turned him down. Now that he’s made it, it seems he owes enviers an apology.
He fumbled to make an impressive opening, but soon he found his voice and exuded the inspiration which birthed the song, making TV crew and their viewers fall in love with his music all over again. As he sang, with his mind’s eye he could see all the parts of the lyrics his manager Titus edited and the slight changes Bulldog made to the beat. Small changes, huge effects.
Fame is insane. Out of nowhere he’s suddenly been cast into limelight. Many used to judge and shun him because of his appearance. Now everywhere he went, hugs, kisses, screams and photographs greeted him. He too had become somebody. He knew not how long this would last and where all this will take him. It’s a bit unsettling for him. And the women. They all left him when he was a nobody. Now, there were so many of them he could use some to decorate his luxurious living room with bundles of them to spare. It’s crazy!
In the midst of what looked like a fulfilled life, a piece of him hadn’t found happiness. He realized it was becoming more and more difficult to make true connections with genuine friends. Everyone was smiling at him. It is hard to tell the true personalities behind the masks. It was indeed lonely at the top.

Milena, you are absolutely right. We ought to celebrate each other’s successes and victories. If we are jealous of the good things that happen to others, when good fortune comes our way, how do we expect others to join in our happiness ?
Oh I love this Benjamin!!
What a lovely work.
It is showing the real face of society.
People always diss and ignore the nobodys, but when they do something big or become famous, they flock around them 🤷🏻♂️
I mean, the true nature of person can be judged by how they are with you in your lowest. Because everyone would want to stand with in your good time, but selected few will help you in your bad times. But those selected few are genuine people.
So true Devang. It’s so sad when people ignore you when you’re starting out in life. The same people turn around to congratulate you and say nice things about you when you become a hit, putting you in an uncomfortable position as to whether to pay them back or forgive and let go.
I was looking for the second part when it came to the end. I really liked it. I had a visual while reading it. Absolutely great writing, it drew me in. Can’t wait to read more. Thanks for sharing. Keep up the good work.
This is a wonderful piece, Benjamin, and the conclusion made me wonder if many celebrities could relate. Thanks for introducing Benjamin to us, Pooja. ❤️
