Finding Claire Fletcher By Lisa Regan Review

Finding Claire Fletcher By Lisa Regan is a psycho-thriller about a teenager called Claire Fletcher who was kidnaped by a very twisted pedophile. Her life changes from that day and she is forced to endure his physical, verbal and sexual assault for years. That is until she meets Detective Connor Parks. Detective Parks has demons of his own but makes it his mission to find Claire. Soon, he realises that the man who kidnapped her isn’t just a rapist but a very dangerous psychopath.

The book has two narratives. The first narrative is that of Claire’s who is now going by Lynn, something her kidnapper forced her to do. We read about what happened to her after she was kidnapped and how she eventually met Detective Connor Parks. We also learn about why she had given up on escaping from her captor. Her story is written in first person and we witness it through her eyes. The second narrative follows Detective Parks and is written in second person. We see what happens after he meets Claire and everything he does to find her.

Overall

I think the first word that comes to mind when think of this book is intense. As you may know, I love psycho-thrillers. I very rarely read something that is too disturbing for me, but this book was intense. There were parts where I had to take a breather because it got too much. There were parts where I could feel myself break out in a cold sweat. And that dear readers, is how you know a writer is brilliantly skilled.

The plot was really good and I liked that it switched between narratives. I feel like if it was just Claire’s POV the whole time it would have been too dark to read. With the narratives switching I felt like even though Claire’s narrative was so dark we got a break from it when reading about Conner. And we had hope that this awfulness for her would end when he finds her. We also learn more about Claire’s case and her captor that Claire is still unaware of.

I also want to add that I know I said some parts are quite dark especially the parts about the abuse. But it’s not too detailed which I appreciated. So, if that’s a worry for you as a reader keep that in mind.

Specifics

I loved the main characters but I think the side characters were incredible too. Claire’s family members really brought the story to life. And they served as a reminder of how much these sort of things affect the family too. It can really tear a family apart and leave the family with a lot of trauma too. And the character of Tiffany was incredible. I mean, I hated her but also felt sorry for her and it think that was the intention. She showed us a different side of abuse where you can be both a victim and an abuser. It’s a middle space that not many people know about or talk about.

Another thing I wanted to mention was that Lisa Regan did a fantastic job balancing the two narratives. It made the book really interesting and for me personally, there were no dull moments I wanted to skip over. The book moves pretty smoothly and the plot is continuously progressing. With a lot of psycho-thrillers the issue I have is that the middle gets a little boring but I didn’t feel that way with this one.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I think the plot was eerily realistic. The author did a fantastic job with the writing and the plot. I really felt like I was there with Claire, internally screaming every time she made a bad decision. And wanting to help her when her captor hurt her. So much so that I found myself getting frustrated with Claire’s decisions but needed to remind myself that she had been through so much trauma and probably wasn’t able to mature properly as an adult due to that trauma. And trauma like that can make us make bad decisions sometimes.

The end really evoked so many emotions for me. Especially when we find out the history of her captor and the fact that people were fully aware that he was a pedophile and did nothing about it. They knew what he was doing to so many young girls and yet they didn’t report him to the police. That’s what was most heartbreaking.

If you haven’t already, do read Finding Claire Fletcher By Lisa Regan. It’s a pretty dark book but it’s also really well written and if you enjoy psycho-thrillers, you will really get hooked to this one. I finished it in just two days because I couldn’t stop reading and wanted to know what happens next.

  7. Despite my long history of abuse I feel compelled to read Finding Claire Fletcher because I love thrillers. And while it’s a novel and one of abuse I still love a book that you can’t put down. I’ve often read a book in 24-48 hours, turning page after page full dying to see what happens next 🙂

    1. I’m so sorry you experienced abuse, that’s really awful. Yes, this book is incredible, I absolutely could not put it down. And I think she does a great job of showing how complicated it is for abuse victims and why just leaving isn’t always possible. Would definitely recommend if you enjoy thrillers.
