April Is The Cruellest Month

April is the cruellest month… That is the beginning of T. S. Eliot’s poem The Waste Land. The reason I picked this poem is because it reminds me that even though April signals new beginnings, for some of us nothing changes. It’s just the same thing all over again. And that’s how I feel sometimes. Not always, just sometimes. Especially in your twenties I think because you’re stuck in a weird place in life.

April Is The Cruellest Month

Most people love April, it’s the start of the warmer seasons, holidays and more. For me, I’m not a fan. April is the cruellest month for me most often because nothing ever seems to go right. Especially because it’s my birthday month. That’s right, I’m a Taurus.

As you may have guessed, I’m not a fan of my birthday. I’ve never had great ones minus a handful of them I had as adults. Mostly, because every year my brain (which hates me) seems to love to fixate on all the things I thought I would assume which I haven’t. But considering I’ll be publishing my book soon there are hopefully not too many regrets this birthday.

Were The Millers No Ragrets GIF

This year, I’ll be twenty-seven. That means I’m closer to thirty now than I am to twenty. Which is both terrifying and exciting.

What are your plans for April if you have any? Are you excited about anything this month? What are you looking forward to this month? Anyone else an April baby too? Let me know in the comments below because I would love to hear from you. Or simply just stop by and say hi!

  1. A happy and blessed birthday dear Pooja. I hope this year you celebrate with panaché! We have 3 birthdays in April: my oldest daughter, and two grandchildren. Lots of presents to be given and there’s Eid coming too. So the purse will be quite lighter 😂🥰😍

    1. Thank you so much. Oh wow, you have quite a busy month ahead but all good things 😊 Haha yes, this month will leave your purse much lighter lol 😂

      1. Lol! Very much so. But lots of joy too.

  2. This year, I’ll be twenty-seven. That means I’m closer to thirty now than I am to twenty. .

Ha! I know that feeling. It happens every decade 😀

    1. Lol, age is a crazy thing. 😅

  3. April is also my birthday month, but I’m an Aries. And I love April!

I’ll be going home to Georgia to visit for my birthday and I’m excited! I haven’t been home in 5 years. Time surely flew by, but I’m looking forward to my 3 nights and 4 days there in 17 days! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

    1. Oh nice, I guess it’ll be your birthday soon!

Oh wow, that’s so great. Have a wonderful time in Georgia and I’m sure it’ll be great to be home after so long 😊

      1. Thank you!

        1. You’re very welcome!

  4. I’m planning on continuing to be thankful for the blessings I experience each day in spite of the obvious irritations all of us have to deal with . 🙂

    1. That’s a great thing to do, even with the downs we have many blessings.

  5. You aren’t alone. I do not like April either. It signifies Spring, which I dread, for health reasons, but also the long march to wait for Autumn and Winter to arrive again. I much prefer cool and cold climates than warm.
Normally, I would have nothing to look forward to, but since I am starting a new job tomorrow, this year, there is that.

    1. Oh true, when I was in Canada spring just meant a runny nose for a month or tw lol.

Good luck with your job, so happy for you!

      1. Thanks, Pooja! 🙏🙏

        1. You’re very welcome ☺

  6. Hello to my fellow Taurus!

    1. Yay another Taurus!

  7. April is a good month, you can go out and grill food on an open fire, we’ll be planting a garden with my students, I’m looking forward to it

    1. I hope you’re able to enjoy it a lot and spend lots of time outside. Winter can be a bit depressing in comparison.

      1. Yes me too. Fortunately, it’s over now

  8. My birthday is in April too right along with a lot of family birthdays. Mine is the last of the month and not just in date but by the time it gets here every one is all birthday partied out 😂 so mine was always left off in the loving “you understand” kind of way. 😂 which I do because all the planning gets exhausting. Still, sometimes, it gets to me and I have to remind myself it is just a day 🙂

    1. Oh no, it’s awful when your birthday is last lol. Thankfully, mine is the first in my family 😅 Yeah, it’s just a day and I’m sure your family still cares a lot. It’s just they’re exhausted by then with all the other birthdays haha.

  9. Happy birthday to you! Interesting to see this quote here as I always think of April as the true coming of spring . . we shall see!

    1. Thanks and true, I think April is when Spring really starts!

  10. Beautiful post 🙂 A very happy birthday! it’s amazing how months are differently defined by us, how they are loaded with memories (good and bad), expectations, etc.

    1. Thanks so much 🙂 That’s so true. Each month is different to each person.

  11. I am looking forward to the total solar eclipse on April 8. It will be my first total solar eclipse and a total solar eclipse is very different from a partial or annular. Allegedly it is an incredible experience, so they say. Hopefully the weather will cooperate.

I hope you also will get a good April despite it being a cruel month.

    1. Oh yes, I’ve been looking forward to that too. My family loves astronomy related stuff. Not sure if we’ll see it here due to weather but fingers crossed.

      Thanks so much.

  12. I have the tattoo No Regerts !!! (lol) Happy April Fool’s (zero tats) … I love Taurus’s and I’m biased !!

    1. Lol, genuinely thinking of getting that tattoo though 😅 jk jk. Taurus are the best lol!

  13. April, for those of us in the southern hemisphere, is telling us that winter is on the way. So yes, it is a cruel month.
As I get older, birthdays shrink in importance. All I ever want now is to hear from my sons and grandson and not to have to cook. I can remember though, when I was twenty-five I became depressed for a whole year thinking that I had been on this earth for a whole quarter century and that I hadn’t achieved any of my goals. I got over it and now take each day as it comes. Some days I achieve what I set out to achieve and some days I don’t – there’s always tomorrow! 🤗

    1. Ah yes, it’s the start of winter for everyone in the Southern Hemisphere. The weather will get much colder in Kenya too. But I actually love that haha.
I like simple birthdays more these days too. I just want to spend time with those I love and have a relaxed day. Yes, there’s always tomorrow and even if we don’t achieve all our goals it’s not the end of the day! 🤗

  14. Taurian! 😎

Love that poem. To me, it really resonates with your opening paragraph. Winter is a time of rest, of cozy fires, of idle pursuits. Not much is expected of us, the days are short and the nights are long.

But now here comes Spring again… groan… memories and unfulfilled dreams… same crap, different year… sigh… guess I better get up and get going… another year of toil, lemme just pull the covers over my head 😑

I know you’ve been going through a rough patch, my friend. I hope you’re having better days. Exciting news about your book!

And you really aren’t old until at your 50th bd party, someone gives you a pillow that says “At my age, happy hour is a nap.” 😜😂 And you’re barely over the halfway point! 😉❤️

    1. Yay, so many Taurian’s on here!

Thanks so much and I thought so too. The poem goes well with my general feelings about April. And I guess yours too a little haha. T. S. Eliot is so relatable 😅

Oof I can’t even imagine my 50th birthday, I better be a bestseller by then or the person is getting beaten with that pillow 😉

  15. I have completed my 27th, a December born, not very enthusiastic about birthdays. As for April it was just a month for me until I received my first salary after 3 years of unemployment 😊

    1. Nice, we’re almost the same age. Once you’re an adult, it’s hard to remain excited about birthdays. Congratulations, may this be the first of many salaries.

  16. Happy early birthday!! I hope you have a lovely and birthday month.

    1. Thank you, I hope so too but let’s see!

  17. Lovely post PoojaG. I love the sincerity as always. April is usually bitter sweet month for me, but it the bad days go by quickly and then I don’t have to worry about them for another year.
I am looking forward to the solar eclipse though on April 8. And I have a lot of writing planned.
I am excited for the launch of your book as well. 🤗👏👏👏

    1. Thank you so much. Glad it’s not just me who feels down about April. I’m looking forward to the eclipse too. Hope I see it here though because the weather has ups and downs.
      Thanks ☺️

      1. I’m planning something to coincide with the eclipse. Hope I have the time. 💪💪

        1. Oh nice, hope it does well 😀

          1. Thank you. 💜

            1. You’re very welcome ☺

  18. Okay I was worried at first, but now I understand you. I hope you have a joyful birthday this year. I’m excited for NaPoWriMo this year and am looking forward to writing more :))

    1. Thanks so much. Oh nice, I’ve heard so much about NaPoWriMo. Is this your first time participating or have you done so before too?

      1. I do it every year but write very little. So I’m hoping to write more this year.

        1. I see, well good luck and hope you get a lot of writing done.

  19. Lovely post, and happy birthday to you this month. 👏👏

    1. Thank you so much ☺️

  20. Another ‘not a fan of April’ here!

    1. Glad it’s not just me lol!

  21. Happy birthday this month! The Waste Land is one of my favorite poems.

    1. Thank you, same here- absolutely love the poem!

  22. Great choice. T.S. always resonated well with me and I always find his works inspiring.

    1. Thank you so much and yes I think T. S. Eliots is often quite relatable.

  23. Sure April is cruel. It starts with a day for Fools. I cannot imagine what is terrifying about being near the age of 30! Try being nearer to 80 than 70!

    1. Oh yeah, I can’t even imagine being in my 70’s or 80’s. I think I’ll just forget about birthdays altogether then lol.

  24. The Jones triplets were cursed at birth: their first names were April, May, and June. April Jones was cruel. May was wishy-washy. June made tunes. Their brother was named after a Johnny Cash song “A Boy Named Sue.”
    https://youtu.be/WOHPuY88Ry4

A girl named Blossom kept looking for a man named December until she died in a snow storm cursing April Jones who told her to go North and follow the North Star or something. The Jones’s were cruel every month except for April Jones who was nice on April 1st.

    1. Love A Boy Named Sue but I always thought the lesson was to not name your son that…

  25. Happy early Birthday!!! I used to have a love-hate relationship with my birthday month as well but now I focus on what I have accomplished this year or this month or this week. Each little achievement puts you closer to the next! Cheers!

    1. Thanks! That’s great, I think I need to take a page out of your book and concentrate more on the stuff I achieved.

  26. Happy Birthday, a little early, Pooja! April is lovely month for me because it’s springtime. June is my birthday month and I always dread it, however, I should be grateful I am amongst the living. 💕

    1. Thank you so much! Your birthday is close by too, just a couple more months to go. Yeah, it’s a gift to be alive and have so much to be grateful for. 💕

      1. You’re most welcome, Pooja. I quit counting my birthdays! 🤣

        1. Lol, I may have to do the same soon 😅

          1. You have a long way to go before you need to worry. I feel my 40’s were my best years! Of course, it depends on what is going on in your life at any given time.😄

            1. Oh yes, I think it definitely depends. I think 50 will be a good time for me to stop counting 😅

              1. I stop counting when I retired (age withheld) LOL

  27. I used to be so hard on myself around my birthday, especially my 30th, so I know there’s no sense in trying to logically reason around that feeling. I only wish for you to be able to find some gentleness with yourself. Acknowledging accomplishments is part of that, but even without accomplishments your life is important and meaningful. <3 Happy early birthday!

    1. Thanks so much! Yeah, you’re right. No one accomplishes everything and even if we don’t accomplish some things it’s okay. But the feeling still stays. Maybe one day it’ll go away.

      1. <3 Maybe it slowly fades.

  28. April is my birthday month too. 🙌🏼
And I agree with you. Birthdays as an adult have been a hit or a miss.
    Unfortunately, more misses.

    1. Oh nice, another April baby! Yeah, as an adult birthdays aren’t the best. Most often they sort of suck.

  29. I also don’t celebrate my birthday.

    1. Yeah, as an adult it feels pointless to do so.

  30. I turn the big 30 in September lol.

    1. Oh wow. Well, they say your thirties are the best years so enjoy it!

      1. Thanks! I’ll keep you updated lol.

        1. Lol thanks, it’ll make me feel better about getting older.

  31. Happy early birthday 🎂💐!!! I’m a May baby, myself, so also a Taurus (though I don’t put any stock in that!) My mom is an April baby. She’ll be 86 this year, which means my dad would have been 96 last January! Amazing!

    1. Thank you! Oh wow, that’s amazing. Happy early birthday to your mum 🥳

  32. thirty is nothing gudka
    man up
    listen to the waste land
    as narrated
    by sir alec guiness
who btw died on this date in 2000
    yw

      1. the first two lines. bingo. that crap about hyacynths and the like. i like my free better. lmao

  33. I found that once I got to 30, birthdays became better, and steadily they have improved in the decades since then. For me, April brings the promise of newness since we transition from extreme winter toward extreme summer, with new growth coming soon in the world (and hopefully within, too).

    1. I’m so glad to hear that, hopefully I’ll feel the same way when I get to thirty. Yes, April often brings with it a lot of new growth and warmer weather. Hopefully summer won’t be so bad this year.

      1. I think our earlier years are tough because we’re trying to make our way in the world, and navigating a lot of challenges along the way. And nowadays, there seem to be more challenges for young people than there were for earlier generations. Community helps with those challenges and with our need to feel we belong, and you have a community here that cares for you. I hope that will help ease your anxiety about turning 27. That one is a long time ago for me but I still remember it well! Enjoy the moment… now is all we have to think about! 😊

        1. It really did help me feel better. Thank you 😊

          1. My pleasure.

  34. Happy Birthday month, Pooja….hoping this one is a grand and memorable one for you for all the right reasons.
relatable to that 30’s….😬 I recall it being the worst one to get pass lol..but passed it did😉
    🤍

    1. Thanks so much. Fingers crossed lol. Yes, we always fear aging but once our birthday is done we’re fine 😅

      1. my pleasure 🤍🤗

  35. Happy Birthday! You are the youngest you will ever be and the oldest you have ever been! Keep enjoying life!

    1. Thank you so much!

  36. Why getting closer to 30 is bad thing? 🤔

    I’m 30
    But I feel 24
    My body feels 24.

    Take care.

    1. That’s great, I hope that’s how I feel at thirty 😅

      1. You need some rules

And you also need to let you of things.

Many things still hurt me. People and experiences hurt me. But, we give people the remote control of our lives.
No-one can and should define you life, but you.

        1. Good advice, thank you.

  37. I like April well enough, as a signal that winter has ended (should it have been a bad one) and that we’re closer to the fall (my favorite season). I have no special plans for this new April, since Easter is already done and I earn too little to bother with tax deadlines (the tax bureaus say I shouldn’t bother). My younger brother’s birthday is this month, so I’ll remember him and his. And now I’ll remember you and yours.

    1. Fall is my favourite too, I would wait all year for it but it would be winter before we knew it. Hope your brother has a good birthday. And have a great April even if you don’t have any plans for it at the moment.

      1. Thank you. I was reminded that it’s National Poetry Month. At least in the USA–I’m not sure about elsewhere. I think World Poetry Day was last month.

        1. Oh yes, I’ve heard that. Another blogger I follow mentioned that.

  38. I was really down about turning 30. I read that Alexander The Great achieved all his victories before he was 30 and died at 32. That is why I reset at thirty and try for the next 30, lol.

April here means a lot of melting and mud, so I prefer spring after the middle of May when things have warmed up and dried out.

    Happy early birthday.

    1. Lol, that helps. Thanks so much.

  39. A lot can happen in three years and this is coming from personal experience. For April I want to get more driving practice in by driving to new places. Finding the courage for that. Also my best friend is getting married this month so I’m looking forward to that.

    1. Yeah, a lot can happen really fast. I wish you the best with that and hope you have a wonderful anniversary this month.

  40. Nice post, thanks for sharing

    1. Thanks so much.

  41. Well, in spite of how you feel, I hope you have a wonderful birthday, Pooja. Mine was last month, and it turned out better than I thought, and that’s because of the health issues I’m having. This year has been unexpectedly rocky, so I’m hoping that this month will begin the smoother trail. 🙂 Take good care! 🩷🌷

    1. Thank you so much. I hope you have a wonderful month and take care too! 😊

  42. Happy Birthday, Pooja! Don’t be afraid of turning 30. It’s perfectly normal.

    1. Thank you so much!

  43. I am also a Taurus, but my birthday is in May, so happy birthday to the both of us! Enjoy this time of life, you’ll be publishing your book, and this year is sure to be full of surprises! Hugs, C

    1. Oh nice! Thank you so much ☺️

  44. Embrace each birthday and ENJOY!!! I hope this year you have the best bday EVER!
I think April is a big dud of a month. I don’t have anything major going on but I spend a lot of time getting my yard and garden going.

    1. Thank you so much! Yeah April is always one of those months where not much happens lol 😂

      1. Right!!! LOL

Hope this month is one of the good ones for you.

    1. Thanks, I hope so.

  46. Aprils are the busiest for me, especially since it’s close to the end of the tax season. But after the rush ends, I love the rest of the month. Hey Happy Birthday although you don’t love it. Turning 27 huh…lots more years to do so much more, hope this is a good one.

    1. Thanks so much, really appreciate that. Hope you have a lovely month.

        1. My pleasure!

  47. I have an inherent romanticism with April, maybe because it’s spring, but I can understand how a birthday month can be stressful, Pooja. It’s somewhat same for me, I’ll be turning 29 in May 🥲. Looking forward to the release of your book, I am sure it will be an exciting moment! ❤️

    1. Yes, spring can be so beautiful so I understand. Thanks so much. Oh wow, your birthday is soon too. Thanks! ☺️

  48. I have to disagree with the poem here about April being the cruelest month. Of course it differs on who you ask but others believe April is a great month for celebrations. My Birthday is tomorrow, 8 April and I AM SO EXCITED to add another year🎂🎂🍰🍧🍮🍮💯🙏

Wishing you a happy month of April💖

    1. Oh wow, happy almost birthday to you as well 😊

  49. Amazing blog post Pooja and we share the same birth month😀💖💖💖

    Keep blogging awesome friend

    1. Thank you, that’s great 😀💕

  50. How can you say it’s cruel. It starts wityh a fool. 🤣🙃😎

    1. That’s the problem 😂

      1. Is it the fool that is cruel? I’ll ask at school and buy a tool.😎🤣🙃

  51. birthday for everyone is different. i like to disappear from everyone on and go to peace and calm locations.

    1. That’s a good way to spend your birthday.

  52. I’m an April baby too and other than it seems to rain a lot for my birthday, I haven’t noticed any hard times in this month. May has been a month when I seem to struggle more with things. Birthday Blessings to you Pooj.

    1. Oh nice, happy birthday month. It’s very rainy in April here too. It’s been raining everyday. I like it though. Thanks so much.

  53. Such a beautiful poem. Although, I’m one of the people that love April. 😅

    1. Thanks so much, lol that’s fine April is great for most people 😅

  54. Pooja, I am an April baby! My birthday is on the 19th. Woohoo it is cool you have a birthday in April too!

    1. Omg, our birthdays are just one day apart- mine is on the 20th!
