Only Murders In The Building Season 4 Review

Only Murders In The Building Review

Note: This Only Murders In The Building Season 4 review contains spoilers for the entire show including the season finale for season 4. If that’s something you would like to avoid, please don’t read ahead.

Today, I decided to review season 4 of Only Murders In The Building. I know it’s been a while since this season came out and I’ve been meaning to review it but as you know things got very busy for me recently. But finally, I was able to watch the finale and wanted to share my thoughts on it with you guys.

Plot

I’ve been a big fan of Only Murders since it first came out. And the biggest reasons were the plot and the superb acting. I always found the plot of each season to be very engaging, suspenseful and thought provoking. Although it’s more of a comedy, I think they still try to include relevant issues such as mental health, loneliness and more.

However, if I’m being honest this seasons plot felt off to me. I can’t say it wasn’t interesting at all because it was but it failed to capture my attention the way past seasons had. Firstly, it felt like there were too many plot holes in the beginning of the season which were left unexplained or just seemed to disappear. Like the whole we’re making a movie out of the podcast thing seemed so integral to the plot at first but by the end they didn’t even bring it up much or seem to care about the movie anymore.

Another issue I had was that the plot was much too slow at the beginning. It was like they were just trying to kill time with the first couple of episodes. It felt like it wasn’t moving ahead at all. Which was so disappointing  because past seasons had been so fast paced and kept you at the edge of the seat. The last two or three episodes moved at a good pace but some episodes were just painfully slow.

Since the podcast is what started everything, I would have loved to see the three main characters actually create the podcast episodes as they had before or investigate in every episode as they had before. With this season, it felt like so many of the clues were found by them simply by fluke rather than proper investigation.

Characters

The characters are always fun to me, I was happy to see some characters reappear like Jan and the detective. The three main characters were great, as always. But I wish I saw more of them. This season had so many side characters that I ended up missing the main characters. I also missed some of the recurring side characters that had been a bigger part of the show in earlier seasons. Like Lucy and Will. I know Will did make a very small appearance but I wish he had been on more episodes.

Guest Stars

What can I say, this season was packed with awesome guest stars. I was so happy to see Paul Rudd come back as a different character. And loved the three movie stars too. Eva Longoria, Eugene Levy and Zach Galifianakis all did a great job with their roles. I was excited to see Melissa McCarthy and Molly Shannon too, I’m a big fan of both.

Season 5?

I loved the ending of the season and the season finale. Of course, I was saddened that it ended in Lester’s death because I quite liked his character even though we didn’t see much of him. But since he’s been at the Arconia for so many years, I think next season has the potential to be the best season yet.

Final Thoughts

I had my hopes up very high for this season simply because that’s the standard set by past seasons. However, it didn’t live up to my expectations. Still, don’t get me wrong. I did very much enjoy the season. Just perhaps not as much as I have enjoyed past seasons. It was a little too chaotic for me and it felt like the writers were rushed to finish the season. Some more editing would have been really beneficial in getting rid of the slower, more dull scenes. However, I still have high hopes for the next season. Hopefully, it’ll be a little better planned out and bring back the spark the former seasons had.

That’s the end of my Only Murders In The Building review. What did you think of my Only Murders In The Building review? Are you a fan of Only Murders In The Building? Have you watched season 4? 16. Sounds interesting, Pooja.

    1. It’s great, I’ve really been enjoying it.

  17. Love the show and your review, Pooja <3 On point! If not for all the murdering, would love to live in the Arconian (Built in 1908 by architectural firm Hiss and Weekes, The Belnord is located at 86th and Broadway on Manhattan’s Upper West Side and comprises 13 floors.)

The set / cast / wardrobe alone is enough for me to watch and obsess over … Side note – Is it only in California that you can't leave the scene of a crime ??? Even if it's only Zach Galifianakis .. lol (His hospital bit with Molly Shannon was hysterical!) !!! My fav detective ever just gets better every season, and Selena is prettier every year ~ <3 I miss Tina Fey's snarky podcast and perp-traitorous assistant! 😉

Sorry for the long-winded comment, but yes … many storylines need explanation and further development, and I am hopeful they will seep into next seasons seamlessly. Even their pajamas are fashion forward #shortgoals ~ 🙂 Awesome of you to post! #OnlyMurdersinTheBuilding

    1. Thank you! I was just reading about how The Arconia is a real place and I would so love to live there too even with the murders (I’ll just be extra careful lol) 😂

I’m literally SO obsessed with the wardrobe especially Selena’s. Omg I was so happy Molly Shannon was on this season, she’s always hysterical. Yes, Tina Fey was so missed!

Yes, I’m so excited for the next season. I just know it’s going to be so good!

      1. Hahahaha ~ Agreed !!! 🙂

  18. I tried to skim your review to avoid the spoilers in case I get to watch the season. I don’t get the channel, but last summer ABC ran some episodes. I enjoyed what I saw. I don’t know, I saw the ads for the fourth season and wasn’t sure I should be impressed. The addition of the Hollywood plot seemed insubstantial. And there are the problems, of course, that you note. I hope a Season 5 isn’t jeopardized.

    1. I didn’t love season four for that reason, the Hollywood plot addition added too much chaos and so many questions unanswered. Still the show is great and I did enjoy it. Just not as much as the past seasons. I would still recommend the show though, if you’re able to watch it.

  19. I have not watched any of the show but think I will binge watch

    1. Hope you enjoy it, we absolutely love it.

I’ve heard it’s a great show. Steve Martin’s always been fun to watch.

    1. Yup, one of the best shows to come out recently.

  21. I’ve heard this is a good show, and now I have to see it, Pooja. Love ya, Girl.

    1. It’s fantastic, definitely check it out. Love you too.

  22. I agree with you that the season seemed a little too chaotic. There was a lot going on between the movie being shot, the Westies and everything in between. I too, was saddened by Lester’s death although, I can admit it was a great cliffhanger. When the wedding went off without a hitch, I knew something was lurking right around the corner.lol. I look forward to season 5.

    1. Yes, I felt like none of the plot lines got enough time since there were too many. I wish they had kept it simple like the other seasons. Still, it was a good season and yes that cliffhanger was fantastic.

  23. Sounds greta but I refuse to pay for television so I can’t ever see it. 🤣😎🙃

    1. There are free sites you can use too though 😅

  24. I had no idea there was a season 5!!!! I’m so excited to watch it.

    1. Me too! Season 4 was good but I’m hoping the next one will be even better!
