How To Stay Motivated When Blogging Feels Like A Chore

Today, I wanted to share some tips on how to stay motivated when blogging feels like a chore. As much as we love blogging, I have read multiple posts about bloggers where they talk about how blogging has started to feel like a chore for them. And that really sucks because it’s supposed to be something you enjoy and do because you enjoy it. It should not feel like a chore to us.

Sometimes it starts feeling like a chore because WordPress is no longer what it used to be. With all the changes, people have seen big reductions in their traffic and following. Before, you just had to post regularly and the WordPress algorithm would do the rest for you. However, they have changed the algorithm a lot in the last few years (I believe it has been changed to push more bloggers to use Blaze but that’s just my opinion not a fact) and bloggers are not seeing the same traffic and following even after putting in a lot of hard work to grow their blog. This can make us feel really defeated some times.

Another reason blogging could be feeling like a chore is because it’s actually a lot more hard work than people realise. Constantly coming up with ideas for new posts, responding to comments and being active on other blogs can take up a lot of time and energy. And that can leave you feeling burnt out.

If you’re feeling burnt out or even a little disgruntled with blogging, here is how to stay motivated when blogging feels like a chore:

Have Fun With It

I think the leading cause of burnout is when bloggers no longer have fun blogging. That really kills your motivation to continue blogging and makes blogging feel like a chore. So, the first piece of advice is make blogging fun for yourself.

Don’t focus too much on your stats if that’s what is stressing you out. Yes, stats do matter to an extent. Especially if you’re not blogging as a hobby but rather to start a new stream of income. But lower stats are not the end of the world. If you focus on your content more, your readers will enjoy your blog posts and your stats will increase anyway.

I talk a lot about things like SEO and algorithm in my blogging advice posts. And they are absolutely vital if you want to see your blog grow or if you’re trying to bring in more traffic from Search Engines. However, none of these things matter if you’re not posting high quality content regularly. And if blogging starts feeling like a chore, you’re going to end up posting less or posting lower quality content for the sake of blogging. Although SEO and stuff like that matters, remember to also keep the vibes positive when it comes to blogging.

Try Something New

Blogging can start feeling like a chore if you’re posting the content with the same topic or niche over and over again. This happens to me too and that’s why you will notice that I have multiple topics/niches that I post content on throughout the week.

My advice is to try new things when it comes to your content. Some of my best views and activity comes from random posts I publish on topics I thought I would try out. When I first started sharing What I Eat In A Day posts or A Day In My Life posts, I just did it because I wanted to try something new. I didn’t know whether anyone would enjoy those posts. And actually the same goes for my blogging advice posts. It was just my attempt and dipping my toes into some new niches. But in the end, those have become some of the most popular categories on my blog. And the best part is that it keeps me motivated to continue blogging and stops me from getting bored with it.

If you would like to stick with the same topic but still try something new, that’s still very much an option. You can try new formats to get your creative juices flowing. Create some images for the post, use/create infographics, add videos or images you’ve taken. There are really a lot of options with formats on WordPress. Try them out!

Set Up A Schedule

Sometimes, blogging may feel like a chore because you have too much other stuff going on with you. Creating a schedule can really help stay on top of things so you don’t end up overwhelmed. When you know you’re going to be busy, create some posts in advance during your free time to share on days you know you won’t have time to create a post from scratch. You can use a content calendar to keep track of your schedule if you’re feeling disorganised. This really helps take the pressure off and allows you to enjoy your life while simultaneously enjoying blogging.

Get Inspired

You may just be feeling burnout because you lack inspiration for your next post. And you know the best way to get inspired? Reading another blog! Reading inspires writing, it inspires our brain to be more creative and come up with new ideas. So, go read someone else’s posts instead of writing one of your own. *cough read Lifesfinewhine it’s super inspiring cough*

Revisit Your “Why”

Revisiting your “why” every few months is almost therapeutic when it comes to blogging. When blogging begins to feel like a chore, think about why you started blogging in the first place. And consider what pushed you to start blogging. This may help reignite the light.

Take A Break

If nothing else works, just take a break. No one is forcing you to blog (especially now that my lawyers say I can’t do that anymore) and sometimes your mind just needs a break. Site quietly and do some meditation, read a book, start a cafe, adopt a cat, move to Milan, start modelling, slowly use that to get into acting, win an Oscar, retire. Do what makes you feel good and eventually you’ll want to start blogging again and feel much more motivated.

Final Thoughts

Well, these were my tips for how to stay motivated when blogging feels like a chore. These work for me and maybe they will work for you too. I hope this was helpful and informative.

  1. You’re definitely right about the reduction in traffic on sites. I don’t have a massive following or ever had a massive number of likes and comments on my posts but I have found that it has dwindled over the past couple of months definitely. I used to see an increase in traffic when I posted the Daily Prompt but now that is being repeated every day and it’s not creating the same traffic as it was before. I don’t mind though, I’ll just keep posting my medication explanations and bipolar experiences. With this being online, it’s a good way to collect your own thoughts and just think in about 50 years time we can look back and see our first post and wonder what we doing to post that 😂👌

    1. Yeah, the traffic is definitely getting slower on WP. But yeah the fun is just posting what you like and being able to look back at those posts and be like “why did I post that??” lol 😂

    2. A very interesting thought about looking back on our blog posts after 50 years! 😀

Milan, eh? 🙂 What a clever and entertaining post! Great advice too, as per usual. My blog isn’t new at all, but is still morphing constantly. Hopefully someday it will settle down a little into a more consistent pattern.

    1. In other news, I may or may not be moving to Milan lol. Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed the post. Consistency is difficult and takes time but maybe after a while you’ll find a rhythm.

  3. You’ve been doing this a long time and are always supportive and instructive, Pooja. I appreciate you sharing what you’ve learned. Even if we follow some of your advice, we can’t help to improve. Thank you, my friend.

    1. Yes, almost a decade of blogging. Thank you so much, I’m glad the posts are helpful.

  4. This is brilliant advice. I’m trying so hard to take it. The fun of blogging was sucked away when WordPress crippled me and my blog. I don’t know if they’ll ever cripple me. If they don’t, I have no choice but to leave.

    1. Thank you so much. Yes, it’s awful when WordPress does that to bloggers. They don’t have a good system to differentiate between real bloggers and spam but that isn’t our fault. They need to do better. I hope you don’t leave and instead just transfer your blog.

  5. I would love to read about how to stay motivated when your favorite job feels like a chore. Teaching can be fun, but two months in, the motivation is gone, so question is what can be done?

    1. I found teaching to sometimes be draining so I moved into instructional design. You don’t need as much energy as being in a classroom.

    2. Teaching can be draining so I understand. But some of the advice on this post can help. Like revisit your why and think about why you started teaching. And maybe try to switch things with your teaching methods. Try to have fun with it although I know that’s not always easy.

      1. I will, it’s all good ideas any way you look at it

        1. Good luck, hope you feel better about teaching soon. It’s a tough profession but I think it’s worth it shaping the next generation.

          1. Thank you Pooja, it’s definitely worth it

            1. You’re welcome and that’s great.

  6. I agree with the points you made. WordPress keeps rearranging things – it’s annoying as walking into your house and finding the furniture rearranged while you’re gone and you don’t know where things are. I’ve run out of blog topics so now I’m using the blog prompts to write a series of short stories.

    1. Yes, it’s very frustrating especially because I find the majority of the changes to be unnecessary.

      1. I think so too, such as the change to the reader. It was fine the way it was.

        1. Yes, it’s actually made it harder to navigate and takes longer to find things which is annoying.

  7. Pooja, great post, very timely. I just came off a two-week hiatus bc I was getting a little burned out balancing blogging…which I really like… with day-to-day responsibilities and related time sucks. I felt like I didn’t have time to give writing the attention it deserved.

For me, the biggest challenge is encouraging my fellow bloggers. I follow a few hundred people and trying to read all their content and commenting is exhausting. Sometimes, I’ll miss an app notification. Weeks later, as I’m cleaning out my email, I’ll find a link to an intriguing-sounding post and find a gem that I completely overlooked. Dang! By then, all the excitement has died down and a comment seems lame.

Any suggestions? I want to read everybody’s work over which they’ve struggled and sweat…but there’s only only so many hours per day 🫤

    1. Yes, I noticed you hadn’t posted in a while but good to have you back. That is quite a dilemma, I know how you feel because sometimes no matter how many posts we read there are still some we miss. I think having a schedule may help with that. Instead of reading everyone’s posts daily, maybe visit every blog at least once a week? I know you’ll still end up missing some posts but at least you won’t end up feeling burned out.

  8. Great post with great tips. All relatable for sure. Had to laugh here”
    😂💗

    1. Thanks so much, lol glad you enjoyed my humour 😅

      1. lightens my day, always💓

  9. That is a lot of interesting thoughts and information and good advice. I have to admit I did not know about the reduction in traffic. I don’t see much reduction on my Leonberger blog but I have a new blog that is not getting much search engine traffic, but I started it in August. We’ll see what happens.

    1. Thank you so much. Usually with Search Engine traffic, it takes a year or more to see a good amount of traffic coming in so it’s not really something you need to worry about right now. Glad the Leonberger blog isn’t experiencing any traffic reductions. I think most of the reduction is for blogs created between 2015-2020. Not sure when you created yours but before 2020, traffic was much higher. You would get thousands of monthly views without doing much, even if you weren’t posting regularly.

  10. Loved this post and great advice, thanks :).

    1. Thank you so much, so glad you enjoyed it 😊

      1. It Sure is
        Thank You☺️

        1. You’re most welcome 😊

  13. I enjoy blogging as it keeps my mind engaged and I spend my time pleasantly connecting with friends all over the world.

    1. That’s wonderful, I think blogging is a great hobby to have.

      1. I fully agree with you my friend

      2. A great hobby indeed! And we look up to you veterans for your encouragement! Thanks for doing so! 🙏

  14. There are times when blogging feels like a chore indeed and we feel the burnout. I’ve been guilty of taking far too many breaks but each time I’ve returned feeling much better. These are some great tips, Pooja. I love the way you infused humour in between. These days, I find myself wondering how I’ll get the time to read all the posts in my reader. Reading posts have inspired me too. And yes, Lifesfinewhine is super inspiring indeed 😉 😊

    1. Absolutely, breaks help a lot when you feel the burnout of blogging regularly. I’m glad you feel more refreshed when you return. Thanks so much, Glad you enjoyed the post. Aw thanks, I always find your posts inspire me to write as well 😊

      1. Always a pleasure, Pooja! Aww, thanks, that’s so sweet of you. It means a lot to me ❤️🤗😊

        1. You’re so welcome, you know I’m always a fan of your blog 🤗❤️

          1. The feeling is mutual, my dear friend ❤️🤗

  15. I love the modelling, acting, Oscar, retire advice. Recently I was told that I am already retired, but just still working, so I will have to work backwards on that, lol.

I get lots of ideas for a blog posts lately, but when I go to write them the ideas seem somewhat negative, so I set them aside to rework later.

    1. Haha well, this is your sign to move to start an acting career then.

Hmm yeah sometimes our posts end up as drafts and take a while to see the light of day. I don’t think negative posts are that much of a problem though, I think it’s good to express ourselves whether it’s a negative topic or a positive one.

  16. I agree that taking a break should be dead last on the list. Too many people seem to go to that option first and then, usually, they never come back.

For me, since I review every book I read, that’s kind of a built in blog motivator. That is my “why” 😀 Everything else just flows from that.

    1. True, I think some people take breaks and then just give up altogether which is sad. Breaks should definitely be more of a last resort when there’s no other options.

That’s great, that’s why knowing your “why” is so important. You have a very impressive schedule for your posts and clearly that works for you well.

  17. This is a great post and really timely for me. Thanks for making me laugh a bit and motivating me to start blogging again (for the umpteenth time)!

    1. Glad the post was helpful and always nice to see you back here even for the umpteenth time lol!

  18. fun?
    gudka
    nope

    now you sound like higgins
    magnum
    oh my god
    shaddup jonathan

    the african queen of win
    yw

    1. Different things work for different people, I don’t have much of a schedule myself lol but I know schedules help a lot of people.

      1. i m sure it does too.

  19. Winning an Oscar and retiring sounds pretty good right about now 😆 thanks for sharing your thoughts and insights. Blogging does sometimes feel like a chore especially when you have to work. We definitely need that perspective that it should be fun and enjoyable, but sometimes the creative well runs dry too 😆 😭

    1. Lol that’s the goal. Once we get that Oscar we’ll finally have enough time for blogging 😅 True, sometimes you just don’t have the energy to blog and that’s when this comes in handy 😊

  20. Revisiting my “why” is something I do weekly. 😑 I’ve found setting up a schedule has helped in the past. I also can only blog when I have excess energy, early in the morning. If I wait until noon or beyond, there’s no way!

    1. I’m the opposite, I can only blog int he afternoon or evening/night 😅

    2. Then you should maximise your mornings. I’m sure you’ll be inspired to produce great content. 👌

  21. I’m at the point where I’m just content with where my blog is at. I’m incredible grateful to everyone who still supports my site and my dreams. Getting a couple likes and inspiring comments is just icing on the cake for me. Creativity isn’t meant to be restricted. Love you, Pooja. Thank you for the encouragement and acceptance. You’re so beautiful and an amazing friend. Hope all is well across the pond 🙂

    1. You’re so right, I think in the end it’s just about enjoying yourself and doing what makes you happy. Love you too hon and yes all is good here. Hope you’re doing well as well 🙂

  22. Great, fun and informative post, Pooja. And Lifesfinewhine IS inspiring!

I don’t stress about traffic; in fact I don’t know what I would do if I had a fraction of the engagement you do! For me, blogging is great way to encourage a daily discipline of writing. Reading other blogs is where I run into trouble as there are so many good ones, and only so much time since I do like to sleep a few hours a day, LOL. But reading a lot is how we become better writers.

Thanks for the tips as always!

    1. Haha thank you!

That’s great, honestly traffic really doesn’t matter that much when you’re blogging as a hobby. And yes, reading is the hardest. Sometimes I miss posts by bloggers I very much enjoy and feel bad about it but it happens.

      Happy to share them!

      1. My pleasure!

  23. You’re a great resource and information provider. Thank you, Pooja. 🙏🏻

    1. Thank you so much ☺️

      1. Thank you! 🌠

  24. You always have such great advice, Pooja. I don’t find posting a chore but I do get frustrated with WordPress glitches. It becomes annoying after a while. I took a break (sort of) for a week and it really helped. I set up most posts in advance and that helps, as well. Thank you for sharing, my friend. 💗

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, the glitches can be annoying. Short breaks help a lot, we end up feeling much more rejuvenated. My pleasure 💕

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja.

  25. I suppose there’s a line between when blogging is a chore and when blogging is too much a chore. I think your notion about blogging being fun (a pleasure) is especially important, as is your advice to try something new. I suppose trying something is a risk with reactions and numbers and all. But I think (well, know) there’s also a line between creating posts and not making them at all. Practical and wise review as always, Pooja!

    1. Thanks so much! Yes, absolutely. I think enjoying what you do is most important especially when it comes to blogging. And posting consistently is most important.

  26. Hi Pooja, I forgot to tell you that I purchased your book! Looking forward to reading it. ❤️😊

    1. Oh thank you so much, I really appreciate you doing that and I hope you enjoy the book 🥰❤️

  27. Interesting that you’ve experienced a drop in traffic because of the promotion of Blaze. Fortunately I don’t rely on mass traffic to my page to keep me motivated to write as its just a hobby for me. But for those who use the site for commercial purposes that could be a problem.

    1. Yes, I think as a hobby traffic doesn’t matter too much but for those blogging for commercial purposes it really negatively affects them.

  28. I’ve experienced some burnout in blogging over the past few years, but it’s always the people who bring me back to it! I miss my blogger friends and the community.
Thanks for sharing all the useful tips and mindset changes to bring back fun in blogging!

    1. True, this community keeps us coming back. Thanks, always happy to share!

    2. Yes, whenever you read a comment from someone who found your post useful or inspiring, that makes your day and encourages you to hang in there! I think that if you can make a difference to even only one person, that makes your blogging worthwhile. It shouldn’t be about the statistics.

  29. The last tip..😝
But great advice as always. Motivation and inspiration abounds everywhere for me. But time to do the things I love doesn’t seem to exist. But avoiding burnout is crucial as blogging can indeed become time consuming. I just take a break at random times. Like you said, no one is forcing me to do this (thank God the lawyers intervened 😆)

    1. Exactly, blog when you can and when it feels good. The lawyers have really changed lives lol 😂

      1. 😂😂🤗

  30. These are great tips Pooja! Finding a fe4w key topics will help, often times when you get into niche you feel stuck!

    1. Thanks so much and yeah definitely!

  31. I’m one of those bloggers affected by less traffic to my posts thanks to WordPress’ not-so-nice attempts to get us to sign on with Blaze. I’m not thrilled by this, but I can’t afford to sign on with any more WP services than I have already.

    1. I’m so sorry to hear that you’ve noticed it drop in your traffic as well. That really sucks I wish WordPress would stop pushing their Blaze agenda. Hopefully they’ll change the algorithm back to what it was because Blaze is not very effective in bringing in traffic.

      1. Before Blaze became a “thing,” I used to get at least 2,000 views a month on average. Now I’m lucky if I get a bit over a thousand.

        1. Yup, traffic is down significantly even if you do everything right.

  32. I never consider my blog or blogging to be a chore! I love it! I love writing and creating new blog entries! These were great tips Pooja!

    1. That’s great and thank you!

  33. Great read thank you!

    1. Thanks so much!

  34. I agree that reading other people’s posts can be very inspiring and this gives you a new perspective. As you said, we should also revisit our ‘why’ to remind ourselves of the reason why we started this journey in the first place. There is light at the end of the tunnel ✨️

    1. Yes, absolutely! Thanks so much for your wonderful comment 😊

  35. Thanks for the insights

    1. Happpy to share it.
