The Ultimate Guide To Blogging

A lot of people start blogging or come back to blogging at the start of the year. The first few months of the year generally will have a lot of new blogs popping up. And that’s why I thought I would create a guide to blogging to help out anyone that may be new here or perhaps just struggling to find their place on this platform. Of course, I can’t share every single thing you need to know about blogging in just one post because there’s so much. But with this ultimate guide to blogging, I’ve tried to add as many things as I could that I feel are vital for bloggers to know whether they are new or more seasoned bloggers.

So, without further ado, here is my ultimate guide to blogging and things bloggers should know:

Love What You Do

I think the most important thing when it comes to blogging, at least if you plan to do it longterm, is that you need to love what you do. If you’re just posting for the sake of gaining followers, making an income etc, you won’t be able to post consistently. Because your blog takes time to grow and people want to read/interact with content that is created with love and passion.

Regardless of why you started blogging, try to share content that you want to share. That makes you happy to share. Otherwise, when you don’t see instant results you’re going to start losing your motivation to post regularly. You’re going to run out of content ideas too. So, if you do take up blogging make sure it’s because you enjoy it and want to share content.

Do Your Research

I wish I could scream this at everyone that asks me about blogging lol. Okay, not scream. More like tell calmly. But seriously, when it comes to blogging you need to do your research. If you pick up one time from my ultimate guide to blogging, let it be this one. Learn how to use the features that WordPress (or whatever platform you choose to blog on) provides so that you’re able to make the best of what you have. If you would like to get more views then make sure you do your research about SEO, the WordPress algorithm etc.

Research, research, research. Never start anything without your research. If I could go back in time to when I first started my blog, I would smack myself and yell research because that would save me hours of going back to old posts and trying to make them SEO friendly.

So please, do as much research as you can when it comes to blogging. It’s not as easy as people think, especially with all the changes WordPress insists on making.

It’s A Big World

It’s a big world out there, don’t expect to blow up overnight. Don’t expect to gain thousands of followers in a few days or weeks. It doesn’t work like that. Blogging is a lot of hard work, it’s a lot of effort.

Growing Your Blog

Most bloggers would like to grow their blog and see engagement on their posts. Of course, those doing it as a hobby may not care as much. And if that’s the case for you, feel free to skip this one.

But if you are hoping to grow your blog along the way there are some important things you need to know. WordPress is not like other social platforms. I think with engagement and growth, it’s a two way street. You have to engage with other bloggers if you want them to engage with you. But unlike social media, people here don’t appreciate spammy comments or superficial ones. People like to actually engage so make sure you’re leaving comments that talk about their content. Not just “follow me back, like my posts” type comments. This is not a good strategy to grow your blog.

You also want to make sure you’re active on your own blog, engaging with commenters. And take the time to get to know others, people here for the most part are really lovely. It’s a wonderful part of the blogging experience.

Monetising Your Blog

I know a lot of people get into blogging because they just want to share their content or they do it as a hobby. But at the same time a lot of people also do hope to monetise their blog at some point. There are a lot of ways to monetise your blog, I won’t get into all of them because I already have some posts about that. You can read all the ways I would recommend monetising your blog here.

What I will say though is that again, this isn’t going to happen overnight. And also, be careful out there. There are so many scammers all over the internet trying to take advantage of you. For example, everyone talks about affiliate marketing but most affiliate marketing programs pay hardly anything unless you get them a very large amount of traffic or sales.

Time Management

Time management is so important when it comes to blogging. Time management is really important. When people first start blogging they don’t realise how time consuming it is. And that leads to one of two things. Either they get overwhelmed and abandon their blog. Or they spend way too much time on WordPress and neglect other aspects of their life. Neither of these are healthy. If you’re a new blogger or even someone that has been blogging for a while but hasn’t figured out a balance yet, schedules are your best friend. Schedule posts in advance, schedule a specific amount of time that you will spend per day on here. Just schedule everything so that you have a much better balance.

Consistency And Long Term Blogging

Consistency and long term blogging don’t seem like a big deal until you’re crying on your bathroom floor because you’ve run our of ideas for blog posts but don’t want to abandon your blog but also are too busy to spend much time on their. And the walls feel like they’re closing in and you’re overwhelmed beyond what you thought possible. That’s just a totally random example of the top of my head though, definitely didn’t happen to me a few years back.

Anyway, back to the point. Consistency is the only thing that will keep your blog growing and getting a good amount of engagement. Now, I’m not saying you have to post daily with no exceptions. It’s okay to take breaks once in a while. But as much as you can, try to post regularly. Whether it’s once a day, once a week, once a month or whatever. Just make sure you post regularly, not at random times because people need to know when to check your blog for new posts. If you post randomly and take long breaks, people will just assume you stopped blogging (which to be fair happens a lot) and will stop checking your blog.

Also, if you do take a break don’t just jump ship with no explanation. Post something that lets your readers and anyone who comes across your blog know that you’re taking a break. If possible, mention when you’ll be posting again so they know when to come back.

Legal And Ethical Considerations

This is just an FYI for anyone that may be unfamiliar. You don’t have to be ethical or even a good person if you don’t want to. We all have free will. However, unlike social media platforms WordPress is very much a close-knit community. For the most part, you won’t find hateful trolls or hateful posts on here. Although I am seeing a lot more than a few years ago. But still a lot less than social media. So again, you don’t have to be nice but it would bode well for you if you were. And try to keep in mind, the internet is forever. So you know, just don’t be an eggplant emoji for no reason.

When it comes to legal stuff, there’s obviously a lot of no-no’s. I’ve seen people literally copy paste other bloggers post. That’s literally plagiarism and can get your post taken down or even your blog taken down if you don’t stop. Don’t use content without permission, if you use images etc make sure to credit the source. You can read more about the legal side of blogging here.

  9. I needed this! I mostly blog as a hobby, but I still need to work on time management and consistency. I’m one of those people who post at random, and I just made a post for the first time in four months. Bloggers like you inspire me, though. Thanks for sharing your insights!

By the way, I purchased a copy of your book last week! It’s so pretty, and I can’t wait to read it.

    1. Thanks so much.

      1. You’re welcome 😉

  14. Also, if you do take a break don’t just jump ship with no explanation. Post something that lets your readers and anyone who comes across your blog know that you’re taking a break. If possible, mention when you’ll be posting again so they know when to come back.

Oh for the love of pete, THIS!!! I cannot believe how some bloggers just disappear for months and then come back and act surprised that nobody is following them when they didn’t warn everyone. Being a blogger is being part of a community and just like in a community, communication is key.
I have invested time and effort into other bloggers and when they leave without a word, it feels like a slap in the face to me.

    1. Exactly, people won’t know what happened to your blog and will assume you abandoned it if you just randomly stop posting. People definitely put effort into engaging with others and it sucks when they just disappear with no explanation. And that sometimes stops us from engaging with them in the future.

  15. As always, practical and easy-to-follow steps! Thx, Pooja.

    1. Thank you so much!

  16. Time management and being consistent are the biggest things for me. I really feel like blogging can sometimes feel like a full time job (if you let it!) and on top of working another full time job (IRL!) it’s important to have that balance.

    1. Yes, I think that’s the problem so many of us have or have had because blogging is really time consuming once you get into it. Making sure you have a schedule to make sure you’re not spending too much time on here helps a lot with keeping that balance.

  17. I don’t know about monetising – my blog costs a fortune.

    1. Yeah, plans cost so much these days.

  18. All very true!

  19. I used to post every week, but it got too stressful, P.J. I decided to change it to every two weeks, and that allowed me to become very consistent, even posting at the same time every two weeks. It was the space I needed. Thanks for such an extensive look into the world of blogging, it’s great.

    1. I totally understand that, we need to figure out what works best for us without stressing us out. Thank you for sharing your experience.

      1. Yes, everybody’s different. We all just feel our way to the type of blog we want. Thanks, P.J.

        1. Absolutely and my pleasure.

  20. Oh c’mon! You mean that we can’t become instant overnight sensations? 😆 But, seriously though, this definitely lived up to the hype of the title. I would send anyone here to this article if they asked for this advice. It’s right on the money! 🎯

    1. Lol unfortunately not! 😅 Thank you so much! 😊

      1. You’re very welcome of course! It’s always a pleasure! 😊

  21. Good tips Pooja

    1. Thanks so much.

  22. These are great tips! I hit a rough patch with the blog last year because of some health issues. But I’m so happy to be back posting consistently. It really is work but if you love it, it’s worth it.

    1. Thank you! Sorry to hear that you went through that but happy that you’re back now and able to post consistently. Absolutely, that’s why we have to love creating content.

  23. Well delivered wonderful information for many to save a lot of time and learn the ropes, Pooja! 🙌🏽

    1. Thank you so much! 😊

      1. my pleasure, always💕

  24. Well done and a post filled with good advice, Pooja! You highlighted excellent tips for newbies and also, great reminders for the seasoned bloggers. 😊

    1. Thank you so much! 😊

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja!

  25. Left for a very long time cause I didn’t get a good enough orientation and lost hope but thank you so much. This was a motivation as well as a real guide. Thanks 🙏

    1. Glad you’re back, don’t lose hope again because it takes a while for us to grow and get engagement. Thanks so much 😊

  26. These are really great and valuable pieces of advice and guidance. Thanks for sharing. Peace!

    1. Thanks so much, happy to share it!

  27. Great advice. I usually blog and then connect with other ones since engagement is very important in terms of growth. Where there is engagement, there is growth

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, engagement is vital if we wan to grow our blog.

  28. Great tips! Especially that one about consistency and the one about legal matters + avoiding plagiarism. It pains me to take a break from blogging but tomorrow’s post will explain why I’ve semi-vanished till summer. 😔

    1. Thank you! I have noticed your absence but I guess breaks are occasionally inevitable.

  29. Goodness, you are wise in this! Anymore, I write most days. Because my sister, while I was recovering from surgery, put a laptop in my hand and said Write something. That’s what I know, and it ain’t much. When I want to consider more realistically what to with my work from where it is, I’ll know where to go. To whom.

    1. Thank you! I’m glad she did that, writing helps with heal. Hope you recover soon.

      1. Thank you. I didn’t express myself well. She did that in 2015; I had open-heart surgery then. I don’t know why I thought of a blog except that I had heard of blogs. I took a couple of WP workshops. After some starts and stops, the writing became more or less a daily thing. It’s kind of a discipline, as such rather a surprise. I look forward to reading in your blog and in your books more of your own story.

        1. Oh I see, I understand now. I’m glad she encouraged you and that you found your way to WP. Thanks so much, I very much appreciate your support.

  30. Lots of good tips here. Blogs are my favorite marketing platform for my books.

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, it’s great for marketing.

  31. Great tips. Thanks for sharing. After seven years my account is starting to take off with hitting 50 subscribers, lol.

    1. Thanks. Lol yay 😄

  32. Thanks Pooja, these are great tips!

    1. Thanks so much!

  33. I needed to read this today, thank you, Pooja! 💞💞💞 I bounce subjects/topics/styles so often, that yesterday I was wondering if I should focus more one aspect of my writing. But I read the same way, jumping genres more often than some change their underwear. 😉 Your advice to “share what you want to share” was EXACTLY what I needed to hear to affirm that it’s ok to stick with what I’m doing. 💞

    1. Yes, share what you want that you enjoy sharing! Too many people feel they should stick to one topic but that takes all the fun out of it. Thanks so much 💕

  34. I agree with what you said about loving what you do. I have two blogs and the more successful of the two is the one that doesn’t earn me any money. I think I am free to be myself for that reason and it resonates with readers.

    1. That totally makes sense. I think when we write what we enjoy readers connect more with your content. Thanks so much.

  35. Your points are so simple, yet many people take them for granted… me included lol

    1. Haha yeah sometimes the easiest things are hard to do.

  36. Fantastic post on blogging, Pooja! Always love your simple but useful tips and tricks. 🙂

    1. Thanks so much! 🙂

  37. Excellent post, Pooja, great advice. One of the things that has impressed me right from the start of my connection with your blog is how you are so great at responding to all of the many comments you receive!

    1. Thanks so much. I think I’ve always loved the social parts of blogging so the comments are always fun for me!

      1. That’s one of the parts I really enjoy, too! It’s so great to see how a post topic resonates differently among people.

        1. True, I think everyone takes something different from it which is cool.

  38. great post and great insights, you are top tier and detailed and appreciated, peace and respect

    1. Thanks so much, that’s very nice of you to say.

  39. Love when you write this type of post! So helpful

    1. Thank you, so glad it’s helpful!

  40. I want to suggest bloggers look at their site from an outsider’s perspective. If they don’t change the generic headers or even give their site a name, how can readers find value there? Also, check readability. I find green on black difficult to read, so I don’t.

    1. That is such a good point, thank you for adding to the conversation. It’s best to use neutral colours and have a site that’s easy to navigate. Things like that really matter.
