How To Write Engaging Blog Posts To Keep Readers Coming Back

bored woman looking at a laptop | How To Write Engaging Blog Posts To Keep Readers Coming Back

I’ve written a lot of blogging advice posts that help you to get more readers and write posts that are both SEO friendly and reader friendly. And honestly, getting readers to your blog isn’t always the biggest struggle. The real struggle is figuring how to write engaging blog posts to keep readers coming back. As bloggers, especially if you’re looking to grow your audience, you need to figure out how to turn those first time readers into every time readers.

I’m sure many of us bloggers have had those experiences where someone will engage with our post, leaving either a like or a like and comment. And then we’ll never see them again. Which is sometimes inevitable because not everyone will enjoy all your posts. But there are ways we can make our posts engaging enough to get at least a large number of people coming back to each post.

If you look through my comments, you’ll see that a number of them are from the same bloggers on each post. Because I was able to find my people that I can connect with and that feel like they can connect with my content too. Sure, perhaps not every single post but still every post they enjoy they will come back to.

So, here are my main tips on how to write engaging blog posts to keep readers coming back:

Title

This might sound really obvious but I’ll say it again, your title matters more than anything. People look at the title before they even decide to click on the post or click on the email to open it. That’s why clickbait titles, although extremely annoying at times, work really well for getting views.

Now, I’m not saying use only clickbait titles. However, sometimes a catchy or perhaps clickbait title can be put to use. Don’t say anything that is completely false or irrelevant to the content of the post when it comes to clickbait titles. But maybe say something that will catch a readers attention.

For example, when I take a break I occasionally use titles like “Why I Decided To Stop Posting.” This brings in views and isn’t necessarily false because I will stop posting at least for a short time. But the way I phrased it will really get people interested in reading the post just to find out what’s going on.

Body

Obviously, the body of the post is extremely important too. Now, I don’t want to sit here and tell you there’s only one correct way to write a blog post because we all know that’s not true. At the end of the day, do what feels right for you and make posts according to your preference. These are some optional tips on how to make your posts more engaging.

Firstly, I always recommend using at least one image or gif per post. It keeps readers interested and gives them a bit of a break from reading. Not only that, it’s also great for your SEO. When posts are hundreds or even sometimes one or two thousand words, it can be easy for readers to lose their concentration when reading it with no breaks in between. Images/gifs will provide these breaks.

The second thing is write your post in such a way that your readers feel that they can engage. Ask them questions, get their opinions on the topic or even start the post out with a question that people can respond to after reading your thoughts on it. WordPress offers a lot of prompts, those are a great way to get people engaged. Answer the prompt and then urge your readers to do the same in the comments.

Be Cool

The very best way to get readers to engage with your content as well as keep them coming back is to engage with them. This encourages them to continue to do so. If someone leaves a comment on your post, make sure you respond to the comment politely and try to interact. And try to visit other blogs you enjoy and interact with them too. Especially if they’re active on your blog. WordPress can often be a two way street. People like to engage with the content those that engage with their content too.

Grammar And Editing

If you’re thinking about how to write engaging blog posts to keep readers coming back, one of the first things you need to do is check your grammar and posts in general. Make sure you at least take the time to make basic edits so that your blog post flows well and is reader friendly. Now, I’m not saying it has to be perfect. No one is perfect, I make mistakes and typos all the time. But it has to at least be good enough that a reader can understand what you’re trying to convey with your post and engage with it accordingly. Write in a language you’re comfortable with that you can confidently write well in.

Keep It Real

I think the most important thing at the end of the day is to keep it real and share content that you enjoy sharing. Don’t post things for the sake of views, likes, comments or follows. Do it because you want to. Blogging can be and should be something you thoroughly enjoy not something you’re forced to do. And when readers see you share content that you love, they’ll love it too. I don’t know how or why but content that you write from the heart just always does better than anything else.

Conclusion

I hope these tips helped you to better understand how to write engaging blog posts to keep readers coming back. And just a heads up, I often write blogging advice posts for those that are hoping to grow their site. If you’re just doing this as a hobby and don’t particularly care about traffic and following, that’s totally okay too. Just do what makes you happy!

  1. I know that there are people who follow me who view my posts but never like or comment. That non-interaction really bothers me, but, what I have learned, is to just accept that’s how it is going to be. Nothing I say or do is going to convince those people to interact, so I’ve just let them go. I try to pay attention to the people who are willing to interact…

    1. That totally makes sense, it’s a good idea to focus on those that are interested in interacting with you.

  2. Your post is real informative and helpful, thanks

  5. I think you pose some really good points. I think we all relate to each other and “finding your people” is so true, because then we all care about, and are curious of what’s going on in each other’s lives. It’s nice to connect with people in that manner. I think another thing that’s important for people is to be themselves. So many people have an agenda or are trying to make a point with a post they lose the plot and forget to be “human” so to speak. I love to read what has come from an actual person, thoughts, feelings, making people feel, everyday stuff others can resonate with. That’s so important 😊 💕

    1. Thank you so much. That’s so true, I think we’re all different and have our own unique voice that we should try to incorporate into our posts. It can be easy to lose that voice when we try to hard. That’s why it’s so important to write from the heart! 💓

  8. All very sensible and valid points. Thanks

    1. Thank you so much.

      1. You’re very welcome

  9. Thank you for the helpful advice Pooja. I knew a lot of it already. It is common sense, but easy to forget. It is good to get a reminder and to have it clarified and explained.

    1. Thanks so much, yes it’s always nice to remember these things even though some are known.

  10. Great tips. Thanks for sharing.
I always look at the AI assistant generated titles that suggest SEO optimization, but I always feel they are a bit off and misleading, so I go with my own even though they may be a bit cheesy. I look at the images as well, but sometimes I can’t help thinking I have seen the images elsewhere, so I prefer to make mine own or go with a Pexels free image.

    1. Thanks so much. I agree, I’m actually not a fan of those AI titles. Some of them aren’t even SEO friendly in my opinion. It’s best to go with what feels right to you. I generally go with the Pixels free image too.

  11. Very useful and great tips! Love this type of content, you can learn a lot from it. Although some of the tips look ‘obvious’ we don’t always pay attention to them.
    Well done!

    1. Thanks so much! Yes, I think even though some of the tips are more obvious we could always use a reminder.

  12. ” I don’t know how or why but content that you write from the heart just always does better than anything else.”
    Couldn’t agree more

I think it’s human nature to sense and relate to something real and not superficial.

    1. I think so too, when we write from the heart people connect with it more deeply.

  13. This is very helpful, Pooja! Some of which I knew, and it never hurts to share reminders.

    1. Thanks so much! Yes, some are more well known but I thought I would add them anyway as a reminder or for those that have maybe just started blogging.

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja!

  14. thanks…I need to get more focused, my blog is currently all over the place…sometimes music, sometimes me, and sometimes me running which was the original reason…..think it all changed when I went from paid to the free version of the blog….and I’ve got to admit writing is as much for me as it is for hopefully those that follow…..and yes I always follow back

    1. It definitely helps to have a more organised schedule. Even with a multi-niche blog it’s good to have a designated day per topic.

  15. Great tips Pooja!

    1. Thanks so much!

  16. And now I just got done bookmarking this one! Your blogging wisdom is so good! I love that you saved the best for last at the end by reminding us to write with our hearts. That’s a major part of why all of us here relate to you so much too, is because that’s exactly what you do! Keep kicking butt Pooj! 💪😁💕

    1. Thank you, so glad my advice posts have been helpful! And yes we always need to write from out heart- that’s what makes readers relate! 😊

      1. You’re so very welcome Pooj! 😊

  17. Thank you for mentioning grammar and editing. This is PART of writing, like cleaning the drain trap is part of doing the dishes (someone please tell my husband 😉 ).

    1. Yes, that’s the perfect way to describe it. Lol feel free to forward the comment to him 🤭

  18. LOL – I tend to do everything wrong. Religion. Politics – far too controversial.

    1. Lol that brings in a lot of attention though because people either strongly agree or disagree.

  19. Lots of good tips, Pooja. I think it is important to be oneself and write in one’s own unique style, even if that can be a little quirky – not least because it helps distinguish our posts from the AI driven one’s that seem to come ready made in perfect corporate-speak.

    1. Thanks so much. I agree, it helps to maintain our own unique voice especially when AI has become more prevalent.

  20. There is a variety of reasons people visit a blog. Some are just from sites that want to promote their product or page and have no intention of reading your work so they just hit the like button in the hope those who check out each person visiting will view their product or page. Some as you say are intrigued with the title of your post and check it out but it’s not their interest on reading. Only those who have a common interest will return to a blog page again and again. Authors may have a common interest, but their main focus is on producing their current novel and will check in intermittently as they have time.

    1. Yes, that’s very true. Everyone has their own reasons for visiting other blogs.

  21. Fantastic tips, Pooja! Thank you.

    1. Thank you so much!

      1. My pleasure!

  22. Fabulous advice, Pooja! 💞 I love the small group feel of the blogs I follow and that follow me, simply because of the engagement in the comments! I began following their blog for the content, but the interaction with them in the comment section keeps me coming back even when the topic doesn’t resonate as strongly.

One thing I don’t enjoy in a blog post is an abundance of GIFS and no way to stop their animation. I used to follow a blog that used them quite liberally in every post, so frequently that I couldn’t position the screen to read the words without one of them on it distracting me. Having that constantly flash as I’m trying to read bothered me so badly that I finally ended up unsubscribing from the blog itself.

    1. Thanks so much! That’s great and it’s pretty similar to me. I love the interacting part of blogging.

That’s so true, it can be distracting if a post has too many gifs. I think one or two is usually not an issue but when it’s a lot of them it can get annoying.

  23. Writing and Grammatical mistakes. I need to work on this.

I used to get low marks compares to my classmates at the college. Despite no significant change in factual knowledge and understanding.

I realise the reading experience will drop because of grammatical mistakes. Then we can always work on making our written work more readable.

Usually I go with the flow that’s why the grammar problem occurs. I don’t plan a post before writing and publishing.
I need to revise my previous posts as a healthy blogging practice.

    1. Yeah, mistakes happen often for all of us but it helps to edit thoroughly.

  24. This is excellent information, Pooja. You are a good teacher.

    1. Thank you so much.
