The Studio: My Thoughts And Review

The Studio: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes
Source: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/the_studio/s01

I recently finished watching The Studio and I decided I would share my thoughts on it since absolutely no one asked. The shows stars Seth Rogen (also a co-creator of the show), Ike Barinholtz, Kathryn Hahn, Bryan Cranston, Chase Sui Wonders, Catherine O’Hara and more.

Premise

Matt Remick (Seth Rogen) suddenly finds himself the head of Continental Studios and chaos ensues as he balances trying to keep the talent happy and trying to keep the studio happy. Although this is his dream job, he realises it’s much more difficult then he imagined especially because he is a people pleaser.

I don’t want to give away too much of the premise but it’s really different than any other comedy/drama shows I’ve seen recently and perhaps ever. It’s such a fresh and creative premise for a show and I think they did a fantastic job bringing it to life. I watch A LOT of TV shows and movies and let me tell you, there’s not that much creativity happening these days. Everything feels like a reboot or whatever. And even shows that aren’t reboots, it’s like they have a fixed list of boxes the show has to check and they don’t want it to be different. They want to make sure it’ll be a hit so they do exactly what is done for other hit shows. Which sucks because there should be room for uniqueness and creativity. But that’s a whole different discussion let me not get sidetracked lol.

The Studio is both funny and has so much going on in each episode. The first episode left me a little confused. I wasn’t sure what to think or whether I liked it. The second episode, I knew I liked it but didn’t know if I loved it. By the end of the second episode, I knew I loved it.

Characters

The characters are AMAZING and every actor on the show does a brilliant job. Again, I don’t want to spoil anything for potential viewers but I loved the characters. They were so eccentric, funny, over-the-top (but not in an annoying way), quirky but also had redeeming qualities.

My favourite was Matt Remick played by Seth Rogen. He’s such a people pleaser but at the same time being the head of the studio means not a lot of people are going to like you or give you credit for the work you put in. Watching him try to balance everything is both hilarious and also somewhat relatable as a recovering people pleaser.

There were lots of guest stars like Dave Franco, Martin Scorsese and Zoe Kravitz as well as many more. Most of them played different versions of themselves which was fun to watch and kept each episode even more exciting.

Final Thoughts

The Studio is such a fast paced show that you blink for a second and everything’s changed. Which I think is the whole point. It mirrors the urgency and ever changing pace of the business. I loved the old school meets new school vibe of the show with the way it’s shot, the clothing etc.

I absolutely loved it and would highly recommend it. Especially if you’re looking for a new show with a unique premise. If you’re already a Seth Rogen fan, you’ll definitely enjoy the show. It does have explicit content and strong language so if that’s something you would like to avoid, this isn’t the show for you.

  5. We really liked it too! So funny. Also, it gives you a slightly better understanding of the role of studio executives vs. producers and directors.
Kathryn Hahn as the Head of Marketing was a riot. 😂

The dream job can definitely bite you in the rear, it so very true, I love it that they make it so obvious.

    1. Thank you! Yes, it’s such an amazing feeling to live free and be who we really are!

      1. Wonderful!
        Dear Pooja
        Indeed☺️🙌

  11. I watched Seth Rogan in The Green Hornet and rather enjoyed it. I can’t think of anything else I’ve seen him in though.
But explicit content and language means this show isn’t for me.

    1. I rewatched The Green Hornet recently and yeah it’s pretty entertaining. That’s totally fair, if you avoid explicit content I don’t think you would enjoy anything else that Seth Rogen is in.

  12. Thank you for your, Pooja. It sounds interesting, and I’ll try and check it out.

    1. Thanks so much, hope you like it.

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja.

  13. Your review is detailed and effective. Makes me want to try the show. Your comment about lack of creativity is sound. We are living in a world of sequels, and I’m tired of it. I suppose there is a belief that they are sure money. Sigh. Have a pleasant weekend, and thanks for all your good work.

    1. Thank you so much. I absolutely agree, they are more interested in profits that creativity which does make sense to an extent but as viewers it gets too much. The sequels, prequels, reboots etc just aren’t interesting when they’re so many of them which essentially the same premise. Have a great week.

  14. sounds like a great show…thanks for sharing, Pooja…🤍

    1. It was, I loved it. Thanks so much 😊💕

      1. my pleasure…🤍

  15. Definitely glad to hear that it’s got a uniqueness going for it. That over-the-top humor is what I always need in my life daily 24/7 lol! Definitely sounds like a show for me!

    1. For sure, it’s the perfect over-the-top humour mixed with fantastic acting!
